"Some argued that a longer console generation would be beneficial because once developers hit that graphical plateau, they would be able to concentrate on making better stories." (From the article)

Back in the 16-32 bit era of gaming, those consoles/companies would like to have a word with all the developers today. I mean seriously if people are THAT stupid to believe that, they'd believe anything. Games like Metal Gear Solid 4, Gran Turismo 5, The Walking Dead, and even Journey are prime examples of time, dedication, and effort.

Not to knock the author however I could write something better than this and make way more sense.

I think you'll find that's knocking the author ;-)

Honestly from a money perspective you have. Look at other markets. Phones get "updated" almost every week. In with the new tech, out with the old. Phone "developers" couldn't optimize a game for hardware if their lives depended on it.

Yet consoles are sitting there with almost a decade old tech, and still find ways to improve everything. If it was like phones, we'd have PlayStation 13 by now.

Better lighting... hmmm we'll just dumb down the textures. Better textures... hmmm we'll just dumb down the AI.
Better AI... we'll just make them blindingly charge you.
