Is Sony Racing into Trouble with DriveClub on the PS4?

Push Square: "A console launch wouldn’t be complete without a racer to highlight the hardware’s technical strides. DriveClub, a new team-based vehicular experiment from MotorStorm developer Evolution Studios, represents the PlayStation 4’s first foray into the high-octane arena of next generation motorsport. But while the social endeavour sounds intriguing, is Sony steering into trouble with the release?"

what people dont realize is those very nice detailed cars can be coopeted by polyphony for next gt game

Kennytaur4026d ago

Oh, PD most likely has a good database already. I'm sure they have even higher quality assets from the work they did with premium cars in GT5 then what's in the game. And I'm sure they've kept busy since then.

But it could be a shared database since they're both first-party.

MaxXAttaxX4026d ago

Kazunori Yamauchi said that the premium GT5 car models were next-gen ready. And it makes sense. All the geometry is there.

Ritsujun4025d ago

My sexy hands are ready for Driveclub and GT6:P.

sikbeta4025d ago (Edited 4025d ago )

@jerethd

There is no evidence about that, in fact DC game director hinted that they don't talk to PD in any way, so...

@sikbeta

Seriously...do you really think Sony is that stupid enough to do something like that. naughty dog use to share information with Insomniac and Insomniac use to share information with other Sony companies and Insomniac is considered a 3rd party studio. Why would they do that. but you are telling me they won't share information with the 1st party studios. If that is the case, it is bad business practice. Oh and byt the way since Sony owns the 1st Party Studios they own the digital rights to everything that is created.

A don't know if it was a early alpha code, but that demo I saw didn't even had tessellation.
Pretty disappointing for next generation.
And another big flaw of that game it's online only, like warhawk.
What will happen with it when gamers move away to another game, which they will do sooner than later.

BanBrother4026d ago

Yes but the developers said that they are adding in tesselation lol. What was shown at the conference was just a taste. They basically said they are adding in a lot of features that were previously only seen on PC.

porkChop4026d ago

Online only? Who ever said that? I know it has a strong online structure, and lots of social features, but I don't remember anyone saying it was online only.

jerethdagryphon4026d ago (Edited 4026d ago )

um gpu tricsk like tellelation and stuff are great for enhancing terrain and stuff but its just subdivision based on color and location and a hightdisplacment map cars dont really need that they can be moddeled entirly with geometry and then all the gpu and ram can be used in lighting and textures

Muerte24944025d ago

of people will argue with you about warhawk "online only" being a bad thing. It didn't need a single player. It was the best ps3 downloadable game ever purchased by me.

KwietStorm_BLM4025d ago

A big flaw? I would say Warhawk says hi, but..

FamilyGuy4025d ago

Warhawk servers are still up and very active so I don't see the problem. These online only games are usually cheaper to buy and on ps4 it'll be like an mmo.

Boody-Bandit4025d ago

delboy I still play Forza 4 and GT5. I also have a couple people on my friends list that were still playing Warhawk until the new one was released. What again were you getting at?

When a hardcore fan of a specific genre likes a game they will stick with it until a sequel or better game in that genre is released. I am headed to my gaming room right now to play some GT5.

all those details about cars, how seats look like, car keys etc... it is far beyond GT i think.

Zefros4026d ago

Only time will tell. The game looks promising.

IRetrouk4026d ago

Its the first game on my list for the ps4, it reminds me of pgr, which in my opinion is the best arcade racer you can get. I think it will sell well, just like the original motorstorm did.

Kurt Russell4025d ago

Metropolitan street racer! :D

fei-hung4025d ago

oddly enough, originally when pgr was released on the Dreamcast, it was called Metropolis Street Racer

IRetrouk4025d ago

You are right lol loved that game too, thats why im looking forward to dc so much, cant wait.

abzdine4026d ago (Edited 4026d ago )

this article doesn't make too much sense.. Evolution Studios nailed it last gen with Motorstorm and they are allowed to try something else.
i'm highly excited for this game especially for its social features which look at sound very promising, and those badass graphics!

nosferatuzodd4025d ago (Edited 4025d ago )

abzdine
indeed well said Motorstorm was and still is my fav racing game up to this day dont get me wrong i live for Gran Turismo but motorstorm is just that game. Sony wouldn't tell gt to step back unless evolution studio can pull it off plus its one more exclusive to help fight forza here some bubbles for that one.

60FPS on PS5: Unofficial PS5 'FPS Boost' mods are radically improving PS4 back compat

Digital Foundry : Whether it's via FPS Boost or bespoke software upgrades, backwards compatibility on the current-gen consoles delivered an unexpected delight - the ability to liberate older console games from their 30fps limits, running them at 60 frames per second or even higher. FPS Boost did the business for Xbox Series consoles on an impressive range of titles, but there was always the sense that PS5 could do more. It's a hunch that checks out as a range of frame-rate unlocks are available for PS5, covering many must-have games - the major caveat being that only exploitable consoles running on older firmwares are invited to the party.

you love to see new life being breathed into older titles but damn the process to get there. It should be automatic that these work for everyone... not just those who exploit their systems. Really wish Sony and MS would keep this program going officially.

Psychonaut8598d ago

Damn this sucks. I want this shit so bad, but I’m not jailbreaking my console. And frankly I shouldn’t have to. I’m not a tech person, but is it really that hard for developers to unlock the framerate? Or would that have to be a large patch?

dveio98d ago (Edited 98d ago )

"but is it really that hard for developers to unlock the framerate?"

I guess it's not.

But it has become a profitable business if you do so.

So no one would pay for only the framerate patched to being unlocked. So studios need to offer more than that.

But this would take more time, polishing and would cost more money. So they shy away, but won't unlock the framerate, either.

That's just my personal assumption. But from what I can comprehend technically, it shouldn't be difficult to unlock framerates via a patch for older games.

... if it hadn't became a business.

RaidenBlack98d ago (Edited 98d ago )

frame-rate unlock should be free ...
We've seen many devs offer free patches and updates to pretty old PC titles, even bonuses ... so why can't devs offer the frame unlock patch for free (in consultation with the platform-producers) for a title from just a generation earlier?

Einhander197298d ago

RaidenBlack

"frame-rate unlock should be free ..."

Obviously the result of that thinking is that developers aren't even going to do it.

If they had been allowed to charge $5-10 you would see incentivized developers doing it way more often.

People just always want everything for free, but it's not free to make the patch, people have to code it then other people have to test it, and there will always be other costs involved.

If people want dollar store gaming then expect to get what you pay for.

shinoff218397d ago (Edited 97d ago )

Raiden I might be wrong but last I thought it cost money to put patches out on consoles.

As far as me paying for it, I'm not all that interested tbh. Not enough to pay for it with older games, and newer games have been pretty decent about it for the most part.

dumahim98d ago

Sounds like the modder has to go in to make changes to unlock it on a game by game basis. "Simple" enough to do it unofficially, but to have it done officially, they need someone to go in a make that change, put out a patch and put it through certification, which I believe is not necessarily a cheap thing to do. It's questionable if going through this would then give them enough sales to make it worthwhile.

Inverno97d ago

Many games still have physics tied to framerate, i think it's cause they wouldn't want to go in and do anything extra. Then there's the 10 dollar upgrades they rather charge. The problem is that there's no compromise, cause if I could mod my PS4 and all I'd lose is online play then id jailbreak it immediately. Mods have done so much for PC games and they could do the same for consoles, but manufacturers hafto be willing to compromise.

shinoff218397d ago

It's not to hard to do and there's youtube videos that break it down really well. ANyway most of us here arent able to break are console anyway due to being up to date on firmware from playing

Chocoburger98d ago

Yep, this sucks having to require a jailbreak for something that should be standard in our industry by now. I learned my lesson when PS4 was jailbroken and I didn't keep a console on low firmware for years, but now I'm holding onto two low firmware PS5s specifically because there are features I'll be able to do that you can't do on official firmware, so this will pay off for me soon enough.

Jin_Sakai98d ago

It should be a sin to let these games sit and be stuck at 30fps.

EazyC97d ago

RDR 2 not getting a 60FPS patch for PS5 was a crime.

purple1011198d ago

i went to the article and theres only a couple racing games, cant find the button to move page on through all the adverts.

purple1011198d ago

ah its changed to a video now, strange, but il take it

Dfooster1197d ago

Dirt rally doesn't even make the list? Errm OK then.

Driveclub is over rated as well, with middle of the road handling and the 30fps killed it upon arrival for me.
