EA and Capcom have both ruined Dead Space and Resident Evil by removing the horror aspect and making it more about action and co-op. Looks like The Last of Us is our only hope for horror now and it won't disappoint. I know it's not all horror but it does have some horror aspects in the game as far as I can tell from the numerous previews that I can't stop watching.

Project Zwei is a another title that may address the horror crisis for consoles.

Companies think we will only play a game if it is based around action.... I mean its not like Dead Space or Resident Evil were selling perfectly fine or anything. Yet what games in those franchises do I not own as of now? Yep, I have all the others.

Seriously Dead Space 3 had all kinds of horror elements in it, and it was fun, right up until it started purely focuses on enemies shooting back at you.....

Zombi U didn't try hard enough, but it was still a good game, and great concept. Plenty scary.

Q. What happened to Scary Games?
A. They weren't mainstream enough so developers tried to make them more mainstream by removing the horror, and adding action.

The problem is horror fans hate the new games, and action fans have better action games they can play. Developers tried to create games that appeal to everyone but ended up creating games that appeal to almost no one.

Wish Resident Evil gets a reboot and make it scary, Silent Hill to go back to it's japanese roots instead of having western developers do it, Dead Space back to Single Player Horror, Fatal Frame new PS4/720/WiiU Version, or a new Siren Game, gosh there are so many good old horror games why did they stop making them scary as hell.
Anthotis  +   487d ago
They turned survival horrors into action games.

They did the same to the Alien franchise with Alien Resurrection.

There were never scary games, I mean maybe when you are younger, but as I grew up there was never a game that scared me, same with movies...it's all just pretend.
BoNeSaW23  +   487d ago
Glad you could point out games and movies are only pretend.

Are you aware that Santa clause and the Easter bunny do not exist as well? Sorry if I spoiled that for you!
Jek_Porkins  +   487d ago
Are you suggesting that you've been afraid of a video game or movie? Because I'll play any game at midnight in a graveyard and not bat a lash.
Philoctetes  +   487d ago
I'm fairly sure the author understands that most adults do not literally become fearful while playing video games. He's just using the word "scary" to indicate games that fall within the horror genre.

If you need any other assistance interpreting the english language, please let me know.

Definition of SCARY

1: Causing fright
2: Feeling alarm or fright

I don't think I'm the one in need to interpreting the English language. He asked "What happened to scary games?" and I replied that in my opinion, there is no such thing, never has been.

Not sure how I can get disagrees over my own personal opinion, but N4G has a lot in common with Germany in the late 1930's.
Philoctetes  +   487d ago
Yes, N4G is exactly like Hitler-era Germany. That is an excellent argument with no discernable weaknesses, and you hereby win the internet. Well done.

Talk back when you play Amnesia.
BoNeSaW23  +   487d ago
Yes. Games have freaked me out and that is the exact reason I was playing that particular game to begin with.

Props to you for being a Manly Man and showing up all us pussies out there with your awesomeness.

and then The Last of us arrives

though, WTH Dead Space is freaking scary xD
Dunno bout you guys but I can't play that game more than 10min. It scares me to death :P
fsfsxii  +   487d ago
I considered the older RE games & Dead Space to be cakewalk after i played Amnesia
Horror genre is not dead, not going to, it has peaked this gen with games like Amnesia and Home

I'll EASILY tell you what happened to the Scary Games... they started catoring to Action Game fans... thus bringing the DEMISE of the Survival Horror genre!

"Scary Games" NO LONGER cator to their original demographic which made them massive/popular franchises to begin with!

Well you still have your brain dead zombie type games around. The Last of us looks like another end of the world zombie type game. I prefer a more physiological thriller like Alan Wake. An incredible game that scares you and makes you think. We need more of these type of games and less zombies or infection type games.
