This Assassin’s Creed Heroine Is a Great Black Game Character. Here’s How It Happened

Kotaku: Curious about what went into making Aveline so great, I e-mailed Jill Murray, who worked with the Bulgaria-based Ubisoft Sofia dev studio as a writer on the portable Assassin's Creed. It's not just me who thinks Aveline's story was memorable. Murray, along with co-writer Richard Fareze, just won an award for Outstanding Achievement in Videogame Writing from the Writer's Guild of America. (It's got an award-winning soundtrack too.) In the interview below, she talks about the research that went into the game, why the attitudes keeping more games from having more diverse characters suck and how she wants to write herself out of a job.

She's actually not that good a character. Zero characterization happened in that game, and her "origin" was extremely rushed and you have no idea why she became an assassin. It's a great game overall, but that doesn't make her a good character. And to be honest, her being a woman who wasn't super duper sexualized was more refreshing than a her being black.

Also, it irks me that people think she's the only diverse character in the franchise, when pretty much every assassin has been diverse compared to games today. An Arab, Italian, and half Native American aren't typically your protagonists in a game.

Loved his English accent. But as an assassin, he was an out n out pirate.

Ezio! Plus leonardo davinci made all his fancy killing gear. Nuff said.

EDIT: And Ezio was the best dressed too. They nailed that italian flair with his outfit. Most stylish assisn too, then!

GigawattConduit3108d ago

Man, I would love a film of Ezio and da Vinci together, just on adventures. They're the perfect duo.

Ezio is the bestest assassinz. The other characters don't even compare. Conner was the worst.

PerfidiousSinn3108d ago

Ezio has a half-cape. He wins by default.

Ezio

Hands down and he has the coolest full name

Ezio Auditore da Firenze

GigawattConduit3108d ago

Pretty sure that's Italian for "I'M THE BEST AND I CONQUER ALL OF YOU"

Heyxyz3108d ago

Best: Ezio!

Worst: The one from Unity (he was so bad I forgot his name).

GigawattConduit3108d ago

Hey, he wasn't that bland! His name was Brad, jeez.

Castlevania3108d ago

Arno. He was kinda bland (or so people say).

Mystogan3108d ago

Nah the worst was Ratuhnkahetun AKA Connor.

Totally agree, I hate AC3 due to him. How could they create such an unlikable character :/ I preferred Haytham to him.
