Great read. Everyone should read this article before commenting. Absolutely it will. And who does the core belong too? Yep, you guessed it. SONY! Nintendo abandoned the core with the Wii and are failing hard trying to get them back. MS abandoned the hardcore from 2010 on and will have a hard time getting them back as well. The core will easily flock to the PS4 because they know Sony will always deliver games. The PS3 still has two new IPs coming this year alone for crying out loud.

N4G can you please keep your pet under control? As always I hghly doubt anything you said. But you can continue to live in your Alice In Wonderland world though.

Until proven otherwise other than that there's no signs of anything he just said.

Auto correction MS abandoned the hardcore from 2011 not 10. MS released Splinter Cell Conviction, Alan Wake, Crack Down 2, Halo Reach and Fable 3 in 2010.

Hardcore players have not abandoned the Xbox, far from it.

A lot depends on what MS unveils when they announce their new console.

If they come out with a presentation showing off Kinect 2.0 and a couple dance games, then yeah you are probably right, but I have a hard time believing they are going to do that.

Sorry unholy I agree..meant wrong place

Hicken4079d ago

I can't understand WHY they haven't, IF they haven't. Microsoft sure has given all indications that they've abandoned THEM.

I agree, I consider myself a core gamer ( not hardcore that is for pron ) and I have already decided to go the PS4 / PC route next gen and not to get a Xbox at all.

My biggest reason is the variety of genres that Sony supports that the others just never will. Also when was the last new core IP released by MS? I hear crickets chirping for some reason...

Sony on the other hand in the same year their new console is releasing will have at least 2 new core IPs releasing, Beyond & The Last of Us. As a gamer I don't care how far into the gen we are I want both new IPs & old reliable franchises to play & chose from.

Nintendo lost me during the PS1 days, MS lost me this gen after owning the 1st 2 xbox's.

Really crickets?

Curious? When was the last major new core IP released by Sony prior to this year?

I stopped reading your comment after the third sentence. It just turned into the typical N4G community comment. All systems have their hardcore fans for different reasons. You can keep saying that MS abandoned it's core fans but that's just you're opinion. I own a PS3 and a 360 and use my 360 more. I don't feel like MS abandoned me. People on this site like to put words in other people's mouths.

With the original Xbox Microsoft tried all kinds of new series. Most of them were platforming games in an attenpt to find a new mascot. They were always trying to attract some of the younger gamers - or older gamers fond of those kinds of games (platforming games were the staple of many consoles). Then they attracted younger gamers with the Kinect.

I think that it's great that they did this. Sony offer relatively little that is not available elsewhere for younger gamers.

No-one doubts that Sony caters for hardcore and indie tastes peerlessly well, especially in the closing years of each generation. But they're a bit 'meh' for younger gamers. They will offer nothing really classic in to the 'family fun' segment. They should really try to get something like an exclusivity deal with Sega. That could really hurt Microsoft. Even if you haven't played a Sega game for a while, you'd notice.

next generation will be decided by great games and great franchises and with that said wiiu will be ahead to stay once nintendo start releasing its franchises for it...they need to put them all out there..

I found it interesting that someone decided to finally take on the "core gamer" which finally deserves a definition other than always hearing about the "casual" or "hardcore" gamer. I did think it was interesting that you said Assassin's Creed and Zombie U were "core" games when they technically are hardcore since they both involve blood and guts and the like. You were pretty dead on with acknowledging Call of Duty as a hardcore game and I think you also mentioned diehard Mario and Zelda fans as also being "hardcore" too. I myself consider myself myself a "hardcore" Mario, Zelda, Metroid, etc. player and casual as far as Angry Birds, Fruit Ninja, etc. But then there are the subdivisions of those main definitions like platformer, shooter, etc. So, I ask, if I am a major hardcore Mario platforming fan does that make me a hardcore casual gamer? I still am coming away a little confused as to what your true definition of "core gamer" is. Do you mean its a gamer who is grounded in liking both casual and hardcore games (both M rated and major fans of)? Looking back at the PS4 reveal I am trying to remember where the casual non M rated game was but if I remember right wasn't the dude leading the majority of the meeting working on a casual platformer? Just because old farts like myself who love good old school stuff like 8-bit or 16-bit doesn't mean we should be counted out because we are alive and well and won't be silenced.

Wait a minute, within the past year or so, I just bout Halo 4, Forza Horizon, Witcher 2, Mass Effect 3, Black Ops 2, dishonored, Assasin's Creed 3, Resident evil 6, nba 2k13, binary Domain, borderlands 2, dragons Dogma, devil May Cry, far cry 3, dead or alive 5, darksiders 2, sleeping dogs, max payne 3, kingdom of Amalur, sf vs Tekken, alan wake american nightmare, Dead Space 3, metal gear Revengenge, and will be getting Bioshock Infinite and GOW Judgement coming up.

So are you telling me that there were no hardcore games to be played in a Microsoft system? People tend to forget that 3rd party support makes up 99 percent of the core games and even if Sony has a couple of extra exclusive game per year, Alot of people, including myself are not interested. Twisted Metal, Starhawk, LBP Kart, and Sony smash brothers I have no interested in them and why should I when 3 of my favorite core games from last years were Halo 4, Forza Horizon, and the Witcher 2.

Things are not going to change next generation , both parties will have plenty of exclusives and all the third party core game support, but I preferred Microsoft exclusives more than Sony's offering. that is all.
