"[I] had a long conversation with Toriyama-San here and Tetsuya Nomura about which character we should use in the third instalment of the series, and they thought we were going to have to have a female one because we hadn't had a female sole protagonist in the franchise before."

Wow! He doesn't even know the history of their own franchise! You didn't have a female solo protagonist...what was Yuna in FF X-2 than?

Also i find strange that he calls Toriyama using a honoriffic but does not use one for Nomura....so he doesn't 'respect' Nomura than.

Most people don't even acknowledge that X-2 even exists. He's probably in the same boat.

Lightning was the bloody lead character of the original FF13, she was still female then wasn't she? yet another ePiC fAiL! from SE

and female or not, Lightning is one of the laimest FF leads, I can't even begin to care, I just want the FF13x nightmare to be over.

I know now why FF13VS is delayed, because it will make fans happy and Wada doesn't want that.

It's really annoying when they keep saying Lightning is their 1st main female protagonist, all you have to do is look up the previous FF titles and you'll see theirs been like 3 or 4 at least, who does Square think they are fooling?

There's*

That's the thing, there has never been been a main, central, character in the series. Tera might have been the central focus of FF6, but she wasn't the main leading character. FFX certainly would have been a different game if it had been about Yana's story instead of Tidus.

Of course, Toriyama (is there a disrespectful version of -san?) thinks action RPGs are the future. STOP trying to pander to western shooter fans! You keep losing more and more of your core audience!

I'm so sick of this guy. It's really starting to look like I'll never buy another Final Fantasy game...

And just like that, we find out that FF13 was going to be a trilogy right from the very start and all of this pretense of it being "for the fans" was a huge load of bull.

"Kitase: We made a decision that we were going to have a sole protagonist in the third instalment of the Final Fantasy XIII franchise since the very beginning, six years ago, possibly 2005, 2006, something like that."

Way to go SE. You planned on a terrible trilogy from the very start? Frickin' classy.

"In order to pursue a more realistic depiction of combat, I think this is the way - the mainstream way, anyway - in an RPG in general."

Oh gee, he wants to go the mainstream way. Because that's ALWAYS the quality way to go and is NEVER a bad idea. *facepalm*

It's funny that Kitase says that story is more important in a Final Fantasy game than exploration and the world, and yet with the Final Fantasy 13 trilogy they have the worst stories in the franchise. They have a warped and poisoned view of where to take Final Fantasy in the future and can't see that the best of the series is behind them and not ahead of them if they continue with their recent attitude.

And this is why people should be worried about Versus given that it was conceived around the same time.

Nomura or no.

Er, I somehow doubt XIII-2 and Lightning Returns were planned well in advance. I mean XIII-2 retconned the ending of XIII, if it was planned they wouldn't have done that...

I know they're kind of in a rough spot in terms of their reputation at the moment, but there's no need to lie...

"if you think about the traditional RPG or JRPG, if you like, [driven] by command battle systems, you have to wait for your enemy to attack you, which is highly unrealistic."

It's a Final Fantasy game though... I mean they're not the most realistic games out there... I never really thought of Command battles as a reflection of hardware limitations anyway. They're an rpg tradition, and I always saw them as more symbolic or metaphoric of the party's struggles, i.e. they're not what really happened, but an illustration of what happened.

"I somehow doubt XIII-2 and Lightning Returns were planned well in advance."

Well, Kitase says they were. I mean, are you saying he lied? Wouldn't be surprising if he is lying, but why would he have to? The other 2 games are already out and this one is coming out. SE already has a pretty much bottom of the barrel reputation among FF fans these days, it's hard to imagine it could get any worse.

If XIII-2 was planned though, XIII wouldn't have had a self-contained story.

Although I think they said somewhere that they were banking on XIII yielding good returns before they considered a sequel, ssssoo I suppose it's possible they left out the canon ending just in case XIII did badly.

Still, I'm suspicious. I'd already accepted that XIII-2 was an apology to fans for XIII (I think they're both fine games but whatever) and I'm okay with that sort of.

If they start saying that it was all planned when it wasn't, they're kind of lying to us - making it seem like they knew exactly what they were doing all along, when XIII was clearly a blindfolded excursion into the unknown.

Lying about the games' cohesion makes them seem much more together as a game's company.

Hopefully they return with better FFs, because the latest one are not allowed to be called good or even okay.
