I am viewing ff 13 as a test by square as all 3 games are fundamentally different.

I think they will find what works for 15, he said optimistically.

Most other Jrpgs stick to what's good e.g Ni no Kuni doesn't start to far away from traditional Jrpgs while adds different things same with dragon quest.

Nothing needs to change more like these 12 year olds need to realise there are other games than COD and open their eyes a bit.

JRPGs aren't dying, this generation we got both Ys Origin and Ys Seven, Tales of Graces f, Xenoblade, Last Story, Persona 4, Disgaea 4, and Ni No Kuni that I can think of off the top of my head. Those are all AMAZING games that should be played. (I'm sure I'm overlooking some I should mention, but it's super early here and I can't think lol.)

What you've pointed out are all the JRPGs that retain their eccentricities and "JRPGness". Not the ones that overly Westernize themselves.

You forgot Nier on that list too. Brilliant, brilliant game. Dragon's Dogma was pretty awesome too. I've enjoyed that more than any ES game so far.

How many good non-action JRPGs were there?

That's my complaint.

There were a few strategy RPGs sprinkled in with the 500 action RPGs. But, that's it.

I jumped into this article ready to rip the author a new one when they inevitably said that JRPGs needed action-oriented battle systems. Then I read:

"There seems to be a misconception floating around JRPG developers at present that western gamers can’t think beyond ‘attack those things, constantly, in real time’ leading to the frugal dismemberment of traditional, tactical battle systems in favour lean, action-oriented combat with numbers instead of blood. The problem here (and Final Fantasy XIII is the major culprit here) is that you’ve got the worst of both worlds – monotonous sword swinging guff with tacked-on menus that further distance the player from any action they perform. What’s needed is a smart, tactical system with oodles of depth for strategists, but shorn of sludgy menus and reams of text. Surely a hotkey system where you can switch setups and equipment at the touch of a button is a no brainer?"

I'm shocked. Pleasantly. Very well said. That's what I REALLY want from new JRPGs. Sadly, I don't see it actually happening. Not many people seem to understand the above quote.
