Steam Box is the new contender.

Maybe. I think the price of admission will be a major factor in it being a new contender once it launches. Right now, Nvidia's Project Shield (which is being considered as a "Steam Box" by many now) is going to start at $999 and on up to $1499 (another $150 for additional space).

That's a high price point, that's most definitely too high for the mainstream audience. It will take some time, but I do think these devices (or others like them) are definitely going to play a major factor in the gaming industry over the next decade.

I think the Steam Box is definitely something of the future. A multimedia device that not only can play Steam's vast catalogue of titles, but also be used to utilize basic computing functions (e.g. word processing, databases, etc.) on any screen in a home, without the need to swap devices - only input devices.

I think price is definitely going to be a factor at first, but as time progresses, the hardware will become ever cheaper and I think in another 5-10 years, this could very well be a mainstream device.
