My first thought when I saw this video was "Holy Crap!". But I think we've all been stung by concept videos in the past so gonna reserve judgement. Still, the idea has a lot of potential.

Yea if it makes it to us exactly the way it looks in the video the ill be very impressed. It looks really good. Where's the projection coming from to do that?
blue_flowers  +   568d ago
in the leaked xbox720 documents from last spring it was coming from a small sphere that looked like an old skool web cam for a pc, but that of course was only a mock up drawing i suppose since it was next to the mock up xbox720 that lloked like a dvd player lol.

"Yea if it makes it to us exactly the way it looks in the video the ill be very impressed. It looks really good."

Agreed, and you have to remember too that the player will be focused on the screen itself so all of the surrounding images will blend in to the players peripheral vision. Will be pretty mental for any onlookers watching someone play Geometry Wars or something along those lines!

Looks a lot like what Sony has been working on but Sony's version does look a lot better.
http://youtu.be/N_cKsOe7hLI

I personally think it's a little distracting and kind of annoying while trying to game to have all that crap going on. I think MS has made another bad decision by going with this tech and instead see the trends going towards tech like the Oculus Rift and Sony's on VR headset.

And it looks like that MS document on 720 that got leaked a few months back was pretty accurate.

ok so lets see if I can help you out here. Take away Santa's little helpers, all the props the furniture and just concentrate on the walls....what do you see? Ooooh! It's exactly the same tech MS is trying to achieve, only better. Do you not see the 3D effects? The higher quality elements being projected onto the walls the richer colors.

@Old McGroin

they stated in the article that this is a proof of concept device only and it made no mention of when it would being ready for the consumer market. So under those parameter yes it's fair to compare the two.

Yeah, Sony's version looks really cool as well, saw that video a while back, but it's not exactly practical considering the amount of work it looks like is going on during the whole thing! I'd imagine by now that Sony have something pretty similar to what MS are currently showing off in the works as well. Exciting times ahead :)

the colour r brighter for the dark room....

what they r doing is totally different ....where u r seeing a game in action on the xbox side....u r seeing some lightin effect that u can do with any laser lightin out there without any other hardware plugged in...

when ill see something practical from sony yeah....ill judge

@TheKayle

I don't think Sony would have a problem projecting certain elements of a game onto a wall or combining that with your TV, but why would they when Sony is capable of putting the entire game into your room on multiple walls so you would be totally immersed in the game itself and would control/play it by using a Move controller. How is that not better than IllumiRoom?

_______

Projecting just in front of you ala Xbox style is one thing but the entire room?

Don't know how that'd work??...
nukeitall  +   568d ago
I think with MS or Sony's implementation what is more important isn't just how well it looks, but if it is practical for home use. Both in price and convenience.

There are motion capture systems far better than Kinect, but nothing that comes close in the price range at the time of release.

I hope MS or Sony can release this at a reasonable price and convenience. Maybe it can be integrated into the Kinect 2. That would be pretty cool!
nukeitall  +   568d ago
Turns out this is done using Kinect!

Now MS just needs to package it neatly with a cheap projector! Pretty cool:

"It's actually a Microsoft Research project that uses a Kinect for a Windows camera combined with a projector. It apparently "uses the appearance and the geometry of the room (captured by Kinect) to adapt the projected visuals in real-time without any need to custom pre-process the graphics." Sure it's still in the prototype stage, but color us intrigued. We'll be sure to follow up with the Redmond giant to see if we can get a bit more up close and personal with this. Stay tuned."

"My first thought when I saw this video was "Holy Crap!". But I think we've all been stung by concept videos in the past so gonna reserve judgement. Still, the idea has a lot of potential. "

Same thinking as me. It's all fine and dandy seeing early concepts and potential ideas but I want concrete stuff from now on. I don't want teaser trailers for games with no confirmed release date, I don't want tech demos for new ideas and new controllers with no real game, I don't want mock-up scenarios on stage that is all scripted. Just give me the truth, I think I can handle it.
ArmrdChaos  +   568d ago
Love people trying to compare a prototype to blueman group and cardboard box performance art. All I have to do pick up 4 projection TV's and mount them on my ceiling for each wall...what are those, 800 - 1200 a pop? That example is really no different than this on 4 walls:

http://www.youtube.com/watc...

Which was done prior to 2009. I guess Sony copied off of them?

What surprised me the most was that they showed primarily shooting games in this, usually in prototype videos like when the kinect was unveiled they show casual and useless games.

Showing these core games really brings my hopes up. This thing with kinect can provide ridiculous potential!!
nukeitall  +   567d ago
@SilentNegotiator

There is no post processing, that is real time done with a Kinect and a project as captured by video:

"IllumiRoom is a proof-of-concept Microsoft Research project designed to push the boundary of living room immersive entertainment by blending our virtual and physical worlds with projected visualizations. The effects in the video are rendered in real time and are captured live -- not special effects added in post processing."

http://www.youtube.com/watc...

Pretty cool!

@SilentNegotiator:

Does it matter if you can see the projector or not?

It's not like the projector is some kind of magic thing. All the magic is done with the Kinect and how the software decides to lay projection onto the furniture.

You are just looking for some BS reason to discredit what has already been stated. No post processing b*tch!

And this can be applied to hardcore games no problem unlike motion controls which we have yet to see a GREAT hardcore game that only uses motion controls. Hopefully next gen we'll finally see one.

I also see it(along with motion controls) as the foundation for technology of the future. This quote from another article sums up my feelings about it pretty well:

OK, for the first time, Microsoft, you've shown me a way to use kinect that I like. I do professional video projection mapping for a living, so to see it and video gaming seamlessly integrate like this is actually really cool. As others have said, however, I'll reserve judgment until I can see this thing in use. I also would like to see more innovative uses other than a limited "wider screen". My second concern would be cost vs. brightness. A good bright projector doesn't come cheap. Toss in a Kinect and an Xbox on top of that... and I can see where these rumors of having to sign up for 2 year service plans of Xbox live to afford the console come from. That doesn't even take the kinect glasses into consideration either.

I'd rather just have VR, but to it's defense it does enable more immersion without the headgear.
doogiebear  +   567d ago
U have any idea's as to how this can breathe fresh air into the gaming scene? I mean: how can this product introduce new ways of playing games (other than a mere gimmick of an extended width of the tv screen's parameters)
kneon  +   568d ago
Until we aLl start gaming in uncluttered, light colored rooms then this sort of thing is just going to add useless gimicky effects to the game.

They can't project anything useful off the screen because there is no guarantee that it will be visible. If there is a door or window or some dark furniture you won't see the image well enough to be useful.

Wigriff  +   568d ago
What you are saying, concerning the room dedicated specifically for gaming, doesn't seem viable either. First off, someone would have to own a house with a spare room that they could dedicate for gaming. Then you would have to probably limit seating to 1 chair or small sofa for the gamer. What else would you be able to have in there? Where would drinks, snacks, or even your cellphone sit?

I think the solution to the problem would end up being better spacial detection so that the device CAN properly adjust to your surroundings, instead of expecting the gamer to adapt their surroundings to the device. Regardless, this sort of innovation probably won't be fully realized anytime soon.

Maybe some real creative companies could figure out how to use this current innovation to do some spectacular and unexpected things, though. Or... maybe it will just end up being a novelty, like you suspect. *shrug*
kneon  +   568d ago
I didn't mean to imply this was a viable solution, it's not at all viable. Ideally you would need no furniture, windows or doors anywhere forward of where you are sitting and have white or very light colored walls.

As for adapting to the room that could be done in some cases but you could still never guarantee that what needs to be displayed can be displayed properly. So because of this it's only extra special effects that are worth doing with this tech.

This looks a really good idea and if MS can pull it off with there next gen console it would be impressive but I don't see it being done for next gen consoles.

I said when Kinect came out that this was just the start of what the device can do and ech version that comes out will offer more and more and I think over the next 10 years we will see some good changes in the device.

Looks a good idea by MS and will be interesting to see where it goes.

Really like a lot of stuff Microsoft are doing in terms of hardware and software. MS now need to get there products pushed onto the public to get there ideas selling.

pixelsword  +   568d ago
Yeah, I noticed them not wearing glasses; I also noticed they didn't show exactly where that image is coming from, or where the console was, either :D

We're assuming it's a projector when they didn't show a projector or an image coming from the back. Is the projector a part of the console, or kinect, or an independent part from both? How will the image carry over to the projector while the disc is in the console?

You have to assume the scanner is at least on your face (impressive if it is), and at the most behind you to scan in front of you, so does kinect now have to be in the back? How does the projector get the image from the xbox? will there be lag between the two like kinect's lag?

It's just that concept and final product may have many differences, so I'm not writing off the glasses or projected image as of yet.

I personally see nothing but a light show. Not exciting to me. If you have a small TV though it could be beneficial. Oh look at that guy on the wall to my right camping.

This plus Depth senor Kinect 2 with your hands controlling things could be an alright thing, but still my interest in Kinect is very minimal. I see no extra joy in this.
Crazay  +   568d ago
I think it's got a pretty cool look in theory but can't see the practicality to it. I guess the point is to create a slightly more immerseive environment similar to that of a holoroom but I still think this is a few years away. Anyone remember when it was rumored to be part of the Nintendo Wii? Everyone was all a buzz about a "hologram" like console.

For me, I can't see how this is going to work well for my environment. My home theater consists of a 92" HD projector with 2 32" LCDs mounted on either side of it. The room has to be pretty dark if I'm going to use those TVS as well as the projo because the ambient light from them tends to wash out sections of the image. having some form of projector box like that is going to screw with my picture. Not to mention that sucker is gonna have to have an awfully
high lumen rating especially to look as sharp as it did in that video without the room being totally dark.
