That would make valve suck. No more free content.

They confirmed that Steambox is running Linux since Gabe hates Win8. The thing is just unstable for gaming compared to Win7.
lfclee  +   1130d ago
Where have you been ? Linux are huge now , not like they were ten years ago they build the apple op's and have implemented there op's much , much more game friendly.
Megaton  +   1130d ago
Valve's gotta be pushing developers to make their games compatible with Linux big time behind the scenes. Selection is pretty bare bones for Linux games on Steam right now.
GraveLord  +   1130d ago
Why not? How quickly you guys forget that the success of Skryim and Minecraft on XBox would never have happened if people had a Steam Box. Who do you think is buying these games anyway? PC Gamers.(or former PC gamers who find consoles for convenient)
JackBNimble  +   1130d ago
Hey dude... minecraft ain't on steam, so why would it be on the steam box.

And believe me,PC gamers wouldn't dump their rigs and jump on the console band wagon for convenience... atleast not any one who considers themselves to be a true PC gamer.

And why would Skyrim and Minecraft not be successful on xbox if it was on steambox? Can't games be successful on more then one platform?

Games can be successful on more THAN one platform. However, every now and THEN one platform will have the upper hand or more superior version of the game. I recently rebuilt my gaming PC and now it can run anything on the market on ultra settings with no problems. I picked up Skyrim on Steam and Battlefield 3 through Origin and have to say that in comparison to the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions of both of these games....the PC version is far superior in every way imaginable. I have had the consoles for the convenience of not having to rebuild a PC every couple of years, but I am so glad I did. The PC I have now should last me a bit and I beleive I will just be getting the console games that are only exclusive to that console...anything that comes out 3rd party that also has a PC version will be played on my PC.

Oh goodness no the steam box seems more of an open platform without the atrocious gold membership subscription deal.

It's official guys and gals, Microsoft has dropped Windows in favor of Linux.

Seriously, do some actual research before making a story.
MoveTheGlow  +   1131d ago
The article's about Valve doing for the console industry what Xbox did for it last generation - shook up the foundations of what a console did. The title's a little misleading, I guess, but he talks mostly about the use of Linux in the article.
Cursinguser  +   1131d ago
While the title may be misleading, when you actually read, rather then comment in an ignorant rage, they tend to make sense.

I dont know what approach MS is taking with their new machine but it seems like streaming is the future of gaming and Sony made a very smart move to acquire the number one gaming streaming company Gaikai.
Roccetarius  +   1130d ago
Streaming is still too far behind to be a viable option.
abzdine  +   1130d ago
and having both possibilities is even better imo!
Godmars290  +   1131d ago
What was the Xbox besides something that introduced online multiplayer to livingrooms?

So besides Halo making it a thing, they don't even have that.

Still don't know what the author's talking about when the steam Box best selling point will likely be Half Life 2/3 and L4D3.

Really between it Ouya and several other similar devices what's really going is the next game system push. One that's going to be defined more by accessibility than quality. Will likely see more titles like WarZ - rushed and broken fly-by-night cash-ins.

Except Sega Dreamcast did that a generation earlier.
RuleofOne343  +   1131d ago
Just like MS did tablets ,but everyone thinks apple created the tablet.
Qrphe  +   1131d ago
A gen earlier? The Xbox and DC came out on the same gen.
DoctorNefarious123  +   1131d ago
@ Qrphe
Your right. To err is to human.
slimpickens  +   1131d ago
For me it really pushed online to levels far greater than dreamcast. Also it was the console that introduced a proper controller for shooters with a mic in every box. As far as games go it pushed console visuals to a level far greater then it's competition. Last generation for me they were onto something but this gen to me they suck!

This is not a bad article but a horrible title. I believe that he is trying to argue that Steambox is about to do the same thing that the original Xbox did and not that it will be the actual Xbox 720. It should titled:

Is Valve's 'SteamBox' Another 'Xbox'?
aviator189  +   1131d ago
As I already have a good pc hooked up to my big screen, I see no point in getting a "steam box."

But I will be getting the next playstation and xbox simply for their exclusives line-up.

obviously not if its running on Linux... and this steam box isn't going to dent the console industry it might push the PC industry gaming wise to another tier.I must say big picture mode made my PC feel cool.

also steam box is for peasants that cant make a gaming PC right?

Funny since there are currently only 41 Linux games on Steam.
MYSTERIO360  +   1130d ago
Valve is whats needed in the console game market and could possibly out sell the next Xbox for a number of reasons:

1. They own 50-70% share of the digital distribution market for video games, so they already have a huge fan base/consumer and have access to a wealth of digital games. Valve also have great support from third party publisher for consoles and PC exclusive titles.

2. Steam are primarily a software company so its easy for them to possibly integrate social gaming features into their platform and make it free.

3.The steam box will not only be built by software developers but by gamers. Gabe newell has extensive understanding of the gaming center and understands trends from a gamers perspective, as their heavily involved within the gaming area.

4. Possibility of Half life 3 being exclusive to their platform, similar to how the Halo franchise is exclusive to MS xbox.

5.The steam box will be an open system allowing user to install other OS into it which is something other companies have been apprehensive about in the past. This could be the future of gaming along with digital distribution and steam could be the first to benefit from it.

May I ask a simple question?

I usually don't play on my laptop or PC. I stick with all the consoles out there. Simply because it is easy and good enough for me.
But a csonsole for PC games sounds good.
I also got some games I bought cheap on steam. Like Torchlight or LEGO Lord of the Rings...

Will I be able to play those games on the steambox?
All my games so far support gamepads.
MYSTERIO360  +   1130d ago
Quite possibly yes, Valve are trying to leverage their Steam service to other devices and are using ''the big picture'' as a means of doing so. Steam will most likely connect pre-existing users of steam to their next console as they have with TV's.
