Most of these games are for PC, in other words, none will sell well if it isn't on a console. The only games on PC that have sold well in the last 8 years are WoW, Starcraft, Elder Scrolls games, Diablo 3, and Sims games. Everything else gets torrented beyond belief, to the point where they can't sell more than a few hundred thousand copies - and they're well established franchises.
Horror stuff isn't exactly the play it safe stuff put out by publishers. Since people have no idea if they'll like the game, and they can't rent it, they torrent it. It's sad, as these games deserve to be a commercial success such that more can get made, perhaps on more platforms so more people can enjoy them.
While I admit that most pirating does happen on the pc it does happen for the consoles as well. Obviously the process to pirate on a console is harder than a pc but it still happens.
As for the fact that people torrent the games to see if they like it, if they are respectable and are merely getting the torrent to demo the game then they will do as pirating should do and if they like it buy the game and if they don't just uninstall it.
especially the part where he was running on the hallway and when he looked back the thing was running behind him as well
amnesia looks awesome as well the rest not so much
these are real survival horror games no guns, just a flashlight, you running and hiding away from the monsters. and ones again no guns, it gives the real feel of having to survive than shooting everything that moves around you
The Glorious PC Gaming Master Race! @ knowyourstuff: had the NERVE to say: "Most of these games are for PC, in other words, none will sell well if it isn't on a console".
Yes most of these games are on the PC cause that's the platform that has continued to have greats sales figures for Indie Devs wanting to make TRUE survival Horror games while most console Survival Horror games get transformed into a call of Duty clone!
insert Resident Evil and Dead Space here for great examples!
You need to realize that the PC has a very different business model than the console and although selling 2 or 3 million units is nice...a dev can make a great profit just from selling 700K units.
No plastic boxes, No shipping Games, No advertisement, No Sony/MS tax, sometimes NO publisher, sale the game forever on steam, etc..
Also most of these PC survival Horror titles are on their sequel or is the second or third survival game from the Dev so therefore they are making money on the PC.
Hopefully ALL of these titles make it to Next Gen consoles as everyone should be able to enjoy TRUE Survival Horror games such as Amnesia and Slenderman and not call of duty clones that use to be scary!!!
dear bloodrain, when I was 8 years old an envious person fed my husky ground beef mixed with crushed glass, while our family was out for vacation he died of severe constipation... human nature is a scary thing and dead space is not.
I get the feeling the developers are slacking, especially since they had a side project they delayed Among the Sleep for, and even that side project hasn't had much told about it.
Im sorry but if you haven't played Amnesia w/ headphones on & the only light coming from your computer monitor you do not know fear seriously scared the hell outta me cannot wait to play the sequel slenderman wasn't bad but no amnesia the atmosphere was so damn creepy.
I think Slenderman is overrated. Dead Space 3 is another Resident Evil 5. Metro: Last Light, while not an actual horror game, may have some good creepy areas.
I'm looking forward to see what Zwei actually is. Amnesia is most likely going to be good, but i don't know the other titles.
Yeah I was surprised at how scary ZombiU was in few parts. Plus it does actually make it scarier that you have to keep looking at the second screen. I'm just disappointed I can't play the game using headphones/surround sound because the console doesn't have an optical port :(
As for 2013, I can't wait for Amnesia, the first one was incredible and so was the Penumbra series.
I just use the optical at back of my tv and through my amp, its not as good as the sound through my ps3 but it still works. Have you tried the headphone socket on top of the controller? Anyway's im loving the atmosphere in Zombi u and am well happy with my purchase, an excellent example of survival horror. Thats my opinion anyway : )
Well I have an old TV. It's full HD but doesn't have an optical port, only HDMI. And the headphones I have (tritton pro+) use optical ports too. I can't understand why Nintendo wouldn't put an optical port on it. Still not as bad as not having an ethernet port though. Having to rely on WiFi for a 5GB update is not fun!
I havent really had any problems with updating over my wifi and Im using century link. But as for the sound thing I just use stock so I havent noticed that limitation yet, it sounds like it sucks though. And idk why Nintendo is always overlooked in practically every catagory. To mention survival horror as if its dead when a title just released, is a new ip, and is selling quite well with a well executed gameplay design seems like a slap in the face. I mean if you go into the title expecting Left 4 Dead type action or Call Of Duty, your setting yourself up for disappointment. If you keep an open mind and go in with other survival horros in mind, not action titles, ZombiU stands amongst some of the best and I for one am I looking forward to a sequel.
I don't understand why people find this "Slenderman" character scary. Forget about the myth, let's just focus on the game. In the video game, what does he do to you, other than standing still at random places? Does he attack you, no. Does he say anything? No again. He looks weird but that's about it. Leave the dude alone, maybe you're hurting his feelings when you run away from him. Or alternatively, you know... maybe devs should start programming him in a way that he can friggin' ATTACK you whenever he sees you? Wouldn't that be a little more menacing?
I know that he's faceless and he's supposed to drive you mad when you look at him and stuff but honestly, I don't buy that. If he's to be regarded as a threat, he better act like one or else I'd just ignore the weird looking bald guy standing there and minding his own business, walk away and call it a day.
most of this seem so poorly done :/ the only one that seem ok is " routine " and until down, amnesia, slender seem ok but very cheesy the rest not even horror or scary at all.. the bby oe lol who was stupid enough to fallow that idea? hahaha
I think TLOU will change how survival horror should be done.. and if kojima is helping in the next silent hill it an only do good plus i hope next gen bring a new Siren lead by the original Silent hill creator or a new IP from him...
Dead Space didn't save the genre. It's one of the most conservative games that I've ever played. Every element has been tried and tested before. It's Aliens, it's Doom 3, it's Silent Hill, it's Bioshock. But when I was in Silent Hill or Rapture I was in a rich environment that I'd never been in before. Not just space. If you wait for Aliens: Colonial Marines, you'll at least be honouring the start of the 'truly terrifying organism/s in space' genre with H R Giger's designs. When you're running around in game like Dead Space that is clearly in such heavy debt to those earlier games/films I can't help feeling that it's not necessarily worth my time going in to yet another space terrain - unless it's done with real B-movie panache, humour or stark originality.
Dead Space 3? No. Just no. The first one had, eh, some moments. Then the second one kinda ruined it. And now with the co-op in mind with the third, you cannot possibly expect it to be scary. That is of course, if you don't find undead monstrosities jumping out of cleverly concealed containers every five minutes to be actually scary. If not, hooray for you.
Typical casual gamer who cries for no reason.I have played Dead Space and it was scary and entertaining as well.I have played almost anything in the survival horror genre and I can safely say Dead Space is one of the best.
Did I ever say it was a bad game? Did I even hint at some gameplay flaw or inconsistency? My observation was tied to the somewhat lackluster use of "trait" survival horror elements (such as scarce ammo, overwhelming odds, etc) which didn't characterize Dead Space as a game. It is a great shooter with a horror theme and some set-pieces but it can never be classified as true survival horror. And since you point me as a "casual" type of gamer, I suggest playing some Silent Hill 2 / Resident Evil 1-3 (Amnesia included) and then we can talk about true hard core, survival horror.
Dead Space was advertised as an action horror game not a survival horror one.I have finished more than once all the games that you mentioned below.Of course it would be considered blasphemy to compare it to Silent Hill 1 or 2.
The game i'm really interested in right now is Zwei because i don't own a PC and it seems like their are lot more immersive survival horror games on PC so hopefully Zwei will be a true immersive survival horror title for current consoles and PC. Consoles need a great survival horror.
Actually, Alone in the Dark was the specifically the reason when writing the article I made sure to never say that Resident Evil created the genre. I tried to say just that it popularized the genre and the term survival horror came from its loading screen. Meaning, the industry adopted the new genre because of Resident Evil. But you are right that it really started with Alone in the Dark and maybe Realms of Haunting.
I can't stop thinking about the floppy disks in that trailer. These people have built massive spaceships it seems and appear very advanced. Yet they still use floppy disks as storage mediums. Lol! I can't get over that.
Might check it out if not playing day z standalone.
I want outlast. A game made by ex ubi and naughty dog devs.

The single player games are the scary ones.

Developers have even specifically said it's "action horror" which translates to action coop game. No thank you.
Yeah.
"HOLD ON ISSACC THERE'S A SPARK IN YOUR HAIR."
"Ohhhhh noooooo. GET IT GET IT!"
But I like the series
So next time ill chech with you if it's ok I like a certin game
And for the record, my point with that comment was that Dead Space is not survival horror, and it's tiring to see people presenting it as such.
Just because a game is mildly scary, or full of cheap jump scares, doesn't make it survival horror.
You see, there's more to the Survival Horror genre than it being scary, just like there's more to the RPG genre than playing as a specific character.
Of course, I can't expect people on N4G to understand more than how to enter their login.

-Survival Horror
Pick one.

I just hope that at least half of them can truly deliver.

Deadspace is not survival horror and it is why people think survival horror is dead.
