Wait...what? Avatar actually positioned as a positive in an argument against The Hobbit? Yeah, I can't get behind that. I appreciated the technical aspect of Avatar, but it was a re-telling of Fern Gully in almost every respect...to put it lightly, it was predictable.
The Hobbit holds the unfortunate position of being the most heavily scrutinized adaptation of our time simply because of its history. So many of us grew up with it, read it regularly, and have a very specific understanding of what it should be. The mere fact that Peter has pulled from the appendices has some people up in arms, while others are truly embracing it.
It's unfortunate that most can't separate the two mediums from one another and simply enjoy the adaptation to film. I'm of the group that grew up reading this at a very young age (really one of my first real books), and I loved the film. Its pacing is certainly slower, but it sets the stage...much like Fellowship did for TTT and RotK.
