while most think sales were down all of this year because people are tired of these current systems my point being we are still getting some awesome games this late into this gen and let's also not forget 2012 was a pretty MEH year for gaming.

i believe sales will pick up a lot with such a strong line of games in first 6 months of 2013 and than later half will see sony and ms release or atleast talk about their next systems.

also i do believe its a 2 horse race and wii-u isn't gonna compete with ps4,xbox720(if that's what MS calls it), while a lot of peop0le say wii-u is next gen when in comparsion its only catching up to this gen consoles, its a given that ps4 and next xbox will have better tech and that is bad for nintendo and gamecube all over again.

for wii-u to succeed it has to get 3rd party support, and for anyone who is gonna say wii outsold ps3,xbox360 well we all know how much core support it got from 3rd party support and for nintendo to sell wii-u based of a gimmick and sell 97 million systems will be impossible. for a $350 system wii-u should have better tech IMO. instead of investing heavily in a gamepad maybe they should have gotten more feedback from 3rd party developers

instead of saying fatigue maybe its the fact 2012 was a slow year gaming wise maybe that's why sales dropped.

Even though numbers have dropped this year, MS still sold double what competitors did. Xbox brand is fading but still is outdoing the competition. MS should be proud since this is only their second console. Next xbox will definitely be hard for the competition to deal with.

indeed, im having a hard time believing it but MS really whooped the competition

Well, with this being the weakest year and current gen systems running out of gas, it isn't a surprise that it's lower than last year. However, next year will be a completely different story!

Next year we will see a big improvement over this because of a few key consoles and software that will become available.

First off, the Wii U will have an established ton of games on the horizon, with key franchise titles leading the way. Next, either the 720 or PS4 will launch with new and/or established IP's. Then we have a new COD and let's not forget, a brand new BF title, possibly launching within a week from each other like last time. Not to mention a brand new Dark Souls title heading our way. There will also be many more unannounced titles coming next year, compared to this year. (MGS anybody?)

This was just a slow year and possibly the final black Friday for current gen consoles. There really wasn't too much coming at the end of this year, bit I can guarantee that next year will be one HOT winter!

The NPD only tracks the US/NA or does it track all regions? Becuase, I thought all consoles did a lot better then what is being detailed in this article.

What ever the case may be, sales look good, even if they are down year over year in the Us/NA.
