It's almost as if they have a heart or something.
Abash  +   1089d ago | Intelligent
More like trade-ins must be slow affecting profits to a notable degree and they need a big boost for that looming sales report they have to present to the executives in charge after the holidays.

You have a wonderful sharp and cynical mind, I deeply appreciate it, and thank you for being you <3

More like Best Buy was whooping their @$$e$ when it came to trade-in value. With Best Buy trade-in prices would generally be $20 - $30 for a new game (similar to Gamestop's old prices), but Best Buy is ALWAYS running a +50% trade in value on used games meaning those games jumped up to $30 - $45, and if you're a gamer a gamer's club unlocked member you would get an extra 10% trade-in credit on top of that ($33 - $49.50). And there's even times when they have 100% trade-in credit although the most I've seen for those was $25 original $55 with 100% and 10% which blows Gamestop out of the water.

Now if people are buying used games from Gamestop (just had Buy 2 get 1 free), but selling used games to Best Buy then Gamestop's supply is going to be low. Therefore, to get more people trading in they have to up their trade-in values since Best Buy is back down to 50% trade-in credit.

Either that or Used game sales are up meaning they have more demand to keep used games in stock. That would coincide with what their CEO said a couple months ago on how they figure out trade in prices.

Higher prices also help get people into the store to hopefully buy games and stuff.

I noticed a lot of those great trade in offers from best buy, and what came to mind was that there was no way those prices could be sustainable for the long term. I mean some of those prices for buying the used game are higher than wholesale for a new one. Gamestop's trade-in values didn't hit rock bottom overnight, it's based on complex algorithms that determine supply vs. demand. I wouldn't be surprised in the least if Best Buy ends up having crappy prices in the future once they have a bigger part of the market. Even their pre-order bonus's aren't really sustainable since in theory they are losing money on each unit sold.

In the mean time though, might as well take advantage of them. Competition is great.

Abash and ABizzel are probably both right.
ThanatosDMC  +   1089d ago
You sell it to them for $20-$25 then they resell it and call it pre-owned for more than twice the amount.
rockbottom3076  +   1088d ago
Best buy has a third party that gives them values and sets prices that's why they don't push used on people. Everytime a game is traded in at best buy it's shipped out then may be shipped back or sent somewhere else.

Damn...thought the end of the world Mayan thing was BS... but Gamestop giving $30 for Family Guy: Back to the Multiverse.. might just be something to it

You know, I never DID get the hate for Gamestop. Yes, their trade in values usually suck but at the end of the day, it is the consumers choice to go there or not. I mean, all you hear is people bitch left and right about Gamestop YET most of those people still go there.

So yea, their practices usually do suck, and that is why I only go there to look for hard to find games, but since I hate how they do things, I basically NEVER shop there. At the end of the day, seeing as how they are still making money hand over fist, obviously they are doing something right because they get a lot of repeat business.

Finally, and this goes out to only a fewm uf you hate them, dont shop with them. I mean I know people that bitch and moan EVERYDAY about gamestop YET they still shop there.

If nothing else, you have to blame the consumers somewhat because if they wouldnt continue to shop there thene GS would change. Still, hate them all you want but, as long as people like getting rammed in the azz, they will keep doing it....

I find the people complaining about GS to be pretty much EXACTLY the same as those who always complain about COD games. It's actually funny when you stop and think about it!
rainslacker  +   1089d ago
I think the hate has been brewing for years. I personally stopped shopping there for about 5 years because the clerk actually said I was stupid for owning a PS3 and not wanting an 360. One opened up near my house though and I went in there one day and they have some of the nicest people working there, and now I shop there enough the manager will go out of her way to get in a special game for me. She even sold me the only extra Wii U deluxe she got when all I could reserve was a basic.

Anyhow, for many people they are really the only choice for buying games at a retail specialty store. Places like target or Wal-Mart have a pretty crappy selection, Best Buy isn't bad but rarely do they have much that's over a year old. For all these big chains I found finding anyone knowledgeable to help you is not that easy. There are some mom n' pop places but they usually don't have the same selection that GameStop has.

The pushy sales tactics seem to be the biggest complaint about service, but it doesn't bother me because I just say no, and really at my job I have to do the same kind of thing even though I don't really want to or know that the customer doesn't want me to.

I would agree if only 1)it's a promo offer for "Power Up Rewards" members only and 2) it ends in a couple of weeks, i knew it was too good to be true.
dbjj12088  +   1089d ago
Between this and 50% bonus credit the other weekend, I don't have any games left on my shelf.
TrendyGamers  +   1089d ago
Did you pick up anything good with all that credit?
dbjj12088  +   1086d ago
I like amassing a lot of credit so I can get new hardware or try lots of new games.
jwk94  +   1089d ago

TheBatman_Fanatic  +   1089d ago
Exactly, now it this wasn't a special offer, then there is something to be excited about.

I despise Gamestop/EB Games as well.

I only buy something there maybe once a year and only if I have to. Like for the PS AllStars preorder bonus, which the cr@ppy clerks also gave me a hard time over, not knowing a thing about the promo and not guaranteeing me a voucher on release day. Funny how when I came back to pick up the game and check on the voucher, the manager was behind the desk and gave it to me no questions asked while one of the clerks who had given me a hard time stood silently beside her, lol.

Horrible trade-in value, poor customer service, few midnight openings, day-late sales compared to other chains, I'd rather shop at bestbuy or walmart where the clerks know nothing, but at least leave me alone and don't try to push their two cents on me that i never asked for. And for the 100th time, stop asking me if i wanna pay $5 for scratch insurance on a scratch resistant blu-ray disc. It's almost 2013. Get with the program.

F*** you Gamestop.

I still sell all my used games on Ebay. You'll bring in at least double, and you can save your lube for later.
Double win.
shutUpAndTakeMyMoney  +   1089d ago
Devs will love this!! oh... Don't provoke used games being blocked next gen.
A7XEric  +   1089d ago
A lot of trading in at Gamestop is about knowing when to trade in. Yea the base values are somewhat low but they are constantly doing different promotions every couple of weeks.

Just save your crap you want to get rid of for when a good trade deal starts that way you won't be "ripped off"
Omnislash  +   1089d ago
No these are not unthinkable prices, these trade in values are what they should normally be offering. I dont buy anything at Gamestop anymore, I just buy off of Amazon, I can get the games way cheaper there and without tax. Pre-Orders come the day of release and without any tax either. Gamestop is the Walmart of video games and I dont shop at either of those places.
MasterD919  +   1089d ago
Short Answer: Best Buy's trade in program is wiping the floor with them so they have to compete.
Brownghost  +   1089d ago
love the 100% trade in bonus and they pay $40 for recent games compared to gamestop that pay $30.

People who live in Illinois or Indiana have no reason to go to GameStop anymore.
KrimsonKody  +   1089d ago
They had to in order from being shut down.
I'm sure their trade ins had reduced significantly during the past years. Not to mention competition with others who accept trade ins, like CeX.
GameStop is simply trying to stay afloat.
JeepGamer  +   1089d ago
They're just trying to get a bunch of trade ins for the holiday season.

3GenGames  +   1089d ago
And the trade in prices are still garbage. I can't believe real people actually do this. Why buy something to lose $30 on it 2 months later? Stupidity.
clevernickname  +   1089d ago
Agreed. I've only traded in games that I already had duplicates of and was able to purchase cheaply and trade in for more than the purchase price.

I keep all of my games. Trading in for credit is a suckers bet and essentially you are just paying a grossly inflated price to rent your games.
Scenarist  +   1088d ago
this comment has nothing to do with gamestop

but if you buy a game new.... beat it .. and have no intention on playing it again.... i think its great that you can get some money back on it.. .. .otherwise its going to just sit there .. and devalue itself overtime.. and be worth nothing...

now if its a game with multiplayer and good replay value...then no need to trade it in .. because you will still be enjoying it... .and the value will stretch longer as well
3GenGames  +   1088d ago
No, not really a gamestop comment because you have to be an idiot to trade it in to them. Ebay or craigslist after you beat it. It doesn't take more than 1 day to beat any single player game today, that's a joke. And games don't devalue if you buy them for a good price any way. You're talking to a guy current sitting next to 500 NES games.
Scenarist  +   1087d ago
i agree
coreymeans  +   1089d ago
I use to work at gamestop and I know that every year this deal goes on sometimes a few times a year. it has nothing to do with gamestop losing money. its all marketing. you still get 20% less if you want cash.

Wow are you kidding me. I got a spare copy of Black Ops 2, traded it in YESTERDAY for 33 dollars.... I'm emailing them lol

I remember they wanted to give me $4 dollars a while back for an extra copy of god of war 3. I then proceeded to sell it for around $30 on ebay :D

This is a holiday grab for hit titles, which will turnaround in no time. They simply don't have enough used stock, and they know they will sell these titles quickly -- thus the special offer.

They will not continue the offer for long, because they do not wish to overstock these titles past the holidays. They will be back to shafting you for used games in no time. Simple business.
