Epic never did anything great on PS3 so I wouldn't consider it a lose if Microsoft did get Epic. As far as I'm concerned they can keep epic and their over used engine, maybe the industry will make their own engine and stop being lazy paying rights to use the unreal engine. I say this is good.

It costs a lot of time and money to develop an engine. I believe the cost to license Unreal is, as I recall, $500,000 per game(not sure if it increases based on number of platforms). The cost to produce an engine is easily in the tens of millions. When a company wants to make a game, more often than not they don't want to spend a couple years with a negative revenue stream just to produce an engine that will be out of date within a few years.

It's why third party middle-ware exists, because it's a lot cheaper to go with a 3rd party engine. The industry you speak of already has many engine options available to it. Konami has the Fox Engine, Square-Enix has Crystal Tools and Luminous. Theres also Unity, Crytek, and a few others that people can license for those that don't have a publisher funded engine.

Wouldn't really make a difference, beside the great possibility of them being destroyed like Rare, and completely fucking up the unreal engine(UDK) with fees out the ass

This bad because Epic Games owns the rights to Unreal Engine 3. If Microsoft owns Epic Games then they are also entitled to the engine which is the most versatile and widely used engine used by developers. I wouldn't be surprised if Microsoft will try to capitalize off this engine and make it less inaccessible.

This article is written by an imbecile. It should be tagged as a rumour, and then it should have been downvoted to hell.

People don't leave before acquisitions. They leave afterwards to get their earn out bonuses.

Epic's strength is in multi-platform tools development. If Microsoft were to take that away, it would destroy an awful lot of value. Even if Epic had "autonomy", internal politics would still find a way to stifle growth.

This article is uninformed. The author probably even knows this, and is just gunning for hits. This should be blacklisted like HipHopGamer.

Epic isn't worth buying in my opinion. The studio doesn't produce a lot of games and pretty soon their engine won't be needed since many publishers/studios are creating own.

Not forget too the disaster of Unreal Tournament 3... i mean, Epic destroy the franchise after this game.
Lvl_up_gamer  +   584d ago
Not if you are a PS3 only owner.

They have released a large handfull of games on the 360.

Unreal Tournament
Gears of War
Gears of War 2
Gears of War 3
Shadow Complex

All great games highly reviewed by the industry.

Soon they will be releasing Fortnight for both 360 and PS3 and Gears of War Judgement.

Don't forget their Mobile game Infinity Blade and soon Infinity Blade 2 as well as Dungeons.

That's quite a large handful of games in only the 7 years the since this gen started.

gears of war 8 coming soon to a 720 near you. they shoulda bought mistwalker!
Lvl_up_gamer  +   584d ago
Remind me how many God of War games there are or Ratchet and Clank or Gran Turismo games?

I agree MS should have bought Mistwalker.
MizTv  +   584d ago
So all the people quite and now they want to buy them?
I think it's just so they don't loose gears to ps3 like every other game they have
Braid  +   584d ago
If they buy Epic I guess that'll be... *puts on sunglasses* an EPIC move.
firefly69  +   584d ago

go ahead and buy them. Theyre aleady turning into garbage with many of their lead guys ditching them. This is the next Rare. Kill em, we dont care. They didnt make anything worth having for the ps3 or wii. Go make another Gears peekaboo game
Cajun Chicken  +   584d ago
lol, no. Epic won't stop being the top seller of middleware for games of all publishers. Just don't see it happening.
jakmckratos  +   584d ago
Im a die hard PS3 lover but I can see this being a really good move for MS and Epic. Bulletstorm sold pretty poorly and yet gears sells 5 million + copies on one system with every release. I dont need Epic games but if I were MS or a fan Id be all for this news
ame22  +   584d ago
If they do, expect them to go down the same route as Rare.
johnsonbat  +   584d ago
No, I am.
Soldierone  +   584d ago
If they do, that will suck for developers. The licenses for Unreal Engine will probably end up sky rocketing (unless you make exclusive titles type of deal)....

As for their games, who cares, only game worth playing that wasn't exclusive was Unreal Tournament. Microsoft will just milk the hell out of Gears of War, ask Bungie how that feels.
AO1JMM  +   584d ago
Not happening......or is it? hmmmmmm
Gamerita  +   584d ago
for Epic to be successful it needs good professional company with bright ideas to manage it.
edonus  +   584d ago
This would be interesting. Especially if they got to license out the Unrealengine4. It really would depend on how they would use the company, they could use it to just make Gears games or they could ramp up the studio and do Bulletstorms and Unreal tournaments exclusively.
Like I said MS is smart they know what they are doing.

And whats all this hate about with Rare. In the real world Rare is doing fine. They are one of the best devs when using kinect technology and have had more million sellers than not since they have been with MS. And if you look at real quality Banjo Kazooie is an extremely innovative and polished game, so was Viva Pinata. The only place Rae fails in is impressing the over opinionated critics and core gamer troop that trusts metacritic and IGN reviews more than devs and reality.
chukamachine  +   584d ago
How are bungie, or 343 top tier studios.

What other massive games have they made.

Halo is like COD now. They carry on a story and repeat the same gameplay more or less.

I'm not saying halo is a bad game, but 360 faithful really do talk a lot of crap. And overhyped the half decent graphics while doing it.

Maybe the devs just go mad when they work for MS.

That fable dude never stops fking moaning. And his games suck complete a$$.

I don't see this turning out well for them. Sure there will be loads of cash for the buyout, but then what?

They should stay indy!!
CYBERHATER  +   584d ago

PAYNEinc85  +   584d ago
