might as well make it into a third person shooter while you're at it.
crxss  +   697d ago
it's not that terrible, besides people who like Bioshock are getting it REGARDLESS of the box art. and people who've never heard of or have seen Bioshock might pick it up cause it's so coooooooooo......
knowyourstuff  +   697d ago
Talk about playing it safe right? As if Call of Duty and Uncharted sold a lot because of the one brooding guy on the front holding a gun... lol what are we 5 years old?
joab777  +   697d ago
Its bad. They r putting the emphasis on u instead of the world and its characters. It shoulda been multiple covers with different enemies or the city itself. I dont like it. Now i am a little worried about the voicing. But i will guve levine the benefit of the doubt until i can see for myself. I was shocked that they did this in an fps.

Can't people find better things to complain about?
Such as, why isn't he clean shaven?!?

They have to because it's not 360 exclusive plus it showed some love for PS3 (Move support).
slapedurmomsace  +   697d ago
@ chris, I agree, I can't be the only one who could give a rats ass about what the box art looks like. Do people really show off their games as conversational pieces? Will this "ugly" box art effect the way the game plays? Am I really that outta touch?
Welshy  +   697d ago
I'll wait for the EU PAL release.

I always prefer the covers we get, it's usually more artistic or subtle. US always seems to get the main characters face taking up 2 thirds of the cover looking grumpy and at something in the distance.

http://tinypic.com/r/35ltel...
http://tinypic.com/r/1rw8s7...
http://tinypic.com/r/wkpzmh...

I know alot of people don'y think that cover art is a big deal, but it can make a big difference of the perception of a game, Skyrim does this well, it looks like an old battered book as though there is a legendary tale inside, which there is to play.

Or even LBP does a good job that you may not even think about. Sackboy holding the world in his hand... you play sackboy and you literally have the entire worlds community players of content to access at any time in your hand.

It's all very clever and psychological.

As long as the game isn't as generic as its cover, I couldn't care less about this.
yeahokchief  +   697d ago
oh shut up. i could easily argue that the bioshock games are just as much about the characters as the worlds they inhabit. the haters here are all dense. obviously this man will be central to the story and the cover here is your first hint.

protip: the key code to the first door in the game will be 451 or 0451

and since when is a comment by a redditor news? screw kotaku.

the target here is gamers. it's not for art connoisseurs. it's a good cover! i would buy that. i AM buying that!

let me ask a simple question in this very complicated gaming world, how often will you look at the box cover once you put the game in your system?

i mean seriously what else can we complain about? these box covers are suppose to be for those who are not aware of the game and may pick up the box in a gaming store to see if they are interested

they know us the core gamers who are interested in the game won't pass on it because we don't like the box cover.
bigfish  +   697d ago
you just spoiled the game for me In reading the article summary on this page ,, thanks really appreciate it
kriauciuniux  +   697d ago
It can only mean one thing.
IT's going to be generic and for dumbed down for casuals.Fans will be disappointed with this one, mark my words.I'm going to take down Patcher.
Bimkoblerutso  +   697d ago
It's not really an unattractive cover. It's just like everyone else has mentioned: it kind of misses the entire point of the game.

Why do American covers always have to have an angry dude with a gun on them?

metsgaming  +   697d ago
COD thats why, and thats why they had mp in the last bioshock.
Bimkoblerutso  +   697d ago
They were doing that way before CoD existed.
MaxXAttaxX  +   697d ago
Nintendo has been making Kirby angry in all of its covers because apparently Americans can't handle playing as anyone who isn't a badass or something like that.

@NathanExplosion

It's funny how a facial expression can actually make the character look more badass. I mean they just made Kirby look like a badass.
Jinkies  +   697d ago
The added american flag dosen't help does it, besides it can't be as bad as AC3 horrible over the top, one sided patiotic elements. This game is about two sides against one another on Columbia
PhantomT1412  +   697d ago
Marketing of AC3 was over the top patriotic. The game is not.
Jinkies  +   697d ago
@PhantomT1412

It's not as bad as the marketing but it's still bad enough and very one sided

Both sides did some horrible stuff in the war but the game dumbs down what the Americans did and over exaggerates the red coats to make them look f****d up and twisted.

Hell they even changed the story with what past AC games told us just so it wouldn't p**** off Americans. I don't believe for a second that <SPOILER> Haytham was going to be evil, that little group he was in seemed more perfect for the founding fathers.

The game takes place in a 1920s steam-punk-esque America. The Flag isn't what ruins it.
Jinkies  +   697d ago
I didn't say it did, did I, I just said it dosen't help

Why add it over Songbird or something else more relevent

but its a burning American flag, doesnt that make your people happy?
rpd123  +   697d ago
"I don't believe for a second that <SPOILER> Haytham was going to be evil, that little group he was in seemed more perfect for the founding fathers."

Did you play the game? He wasn't evil. He wanted independence just as much as Connor. He just had a different way of going about it (one that was arguably smarter and more efficient). And they showed that the Founding Fathers were flawed so many times in the game. It was in no way one sided for Americans. Saying so makes you sound ignorant.

Apparently, "Don't judge a book by it's cover" doesn't apply to video games. Not only will we judge your game by it's cover, but we'll absolutely pick it to pieces and jump to wild conclusions regarding the quality of the overall product.

Ridiculous. I love the guy who posted above this cover compared to the first Uncharted, which I don't recall anyone saying "boo" about. How is this really any different. Or did anyone have an issue with the cover of Halo 4? Oh look, Master Chief with a rifle. Just like 3. And 2. But there's something wrong with this cover? Riiiight...

It is because every single thing matters. We complain so that they could learn form their mistakes.
TryMe  +   697d ago
every single thing matters only if you ALLOW every single thing to matter.

As to the cover..it's awful. it kinda feels purposly marketed towards a specific dudebro crowed.

They could have easily added Elizabeth, and maybe even a tiny glimpse of the song bird.
ThichQuangDuck  +   697d ago
Who cares about the cover, I want to play the game. I am not playing the cover, the cover does not affect anything in the game.
Lighter9  +   697d ago
Agreed. Who cares about a cover picture?
AngelicIceDiamond  +   697d ago
Well the cover art of games is suppose to give the consumer a glimpse of whats in the game, what it'll be about and the protagonist. Just like the original Stars Wars promo cover arts.

The casual consumer will look at it and be like "looks like a boring game." Even if the game turns out to be badass. Just the look of the cover is important to the consumers mainly the casuals.

Of course the hardcore know exactly what the game is, and what its about. They'll say "that's an ugly cover, oh well, time to play."

Edit: @Vallencer Yeah the pictures and details are on the back but its about that first impression. It could immediately catch your attention or be a complete turn off depends really.

Lol of course Gears, Halo, Kill Zone and Uncharted. Will fly off store shelves no matter the cover.

vallencer  +   697d ago
Thats what the pictures on the back are for.
ThichQuangDuck  +   697d ago
I guess I just don't really care about the casual consumer if they choose not to buy bioshock infinite because of the box cover it does not affect me enjoying the game. If they choose to buy bioshock infinite because of the box cover than yet again it does not affect my experience of the game. I am speaking for myself and my the cover being a non factor in purchases or gameplay. If I theorized everything about the casual gamer than I would get a migraine. I will let them think or not think for themselves
Ritsujun  +   697d ago
Yeah you're soooo right.
They might as well make all handheld and non-handheld consoles as flat as squares or rectangles, right?
#7.3 (Edited 697d ago ) | Agree(0) | Disagree(0) | Report | Reply
ThichQuangDuck  +   697d ago
I dont understand this comment because that is a whole nother subject. You use the handheld console to play so you want it to feel comfortable in your hands. The box only matters to collectors and even than if they are so obliged they can beat the game and photoshop the best box art ever in their opinion.
cleft5  +   697d ago
I liked the cover, but each to their own I guess.
Ethereal  +   697d ago
Its called a strategic business move, it sucks but we all asked for it when we continued to buy shooters more than any other genre. I think it could have been worse.
Jinkies  +   697d ago
I would of prefered the one in the article picture, Elizabeth should of been included.

Maybe a one with him holding Elizabeth on it pointing his gun in the air while the two fractions of the war are on either side and Songbird is in the background

google Bioshock Infinite, hit images: the cover in the originally announced CE box set with simply "Bioshock Infinite" looked better.
R_A_LEE20  +   697d ago
The one thing that I've always liked about the covers of BioShock is that it tells me what to expect in this game:

BS1: The cover of the first BioShock show me what I'm going to go up against - a badass Big Daddy.

BS2: In the second games cover, it showed me that i was to become a Big Daddy myself and kick all sorts of ass. Which I did...

BSI: This cover doesn't tell me anything about what I'm expected to do, fight, become or anything else for that matter, in this game. It tells me that I'm a white american with a gun in hand (been there, done that a million times already) standing in front of a burning American flag. That doesn't tell me anything about this game, what I'm to expect, what I'm to fight, what gives me a reason to buy this game.

All in all, considering its a BioShock game, I would have had some form of major enemy of the game that you would face not a gun totting white American that gives no indication on what you are expected to do in this game.
Ben_Grimm  +   697d ago
Well yea, the one pictured is better than the original but that's after the fact. ANyone can come up with a better cover from an original already made.

But I do understand what Kotaku is getting at. But lets be real, this game is going to seriously kick a**, the last thing I would be worried about is the cover for it.
Acquiesc3  +   697d ago
Don't like the cover either. But obviously still super excited about the game.
schlanz  +   697d ago
Don't judge a book... I mean game.. by its cover..
Fishy Fingers  +   697d ago
Should of said generic more.
IWentBrokeForGaming  +   697d ago
If you want to entice people to just even pick up your games case to read the back... you have to lure them in with a "story telling" impactful game cover... if not, no one will even care and will just pass it by!
Brownghost  +   697d ago
Anyone remember people going crazy over arkham city both cover, honestly who decides to buy a game based on the cover.
ghostrider32  +   697d ago
Complaining about a cover really? This gen will be known for being full of people that complain about the smallest s***.
MidnytRain  +   697d ago
Box art is a form of advertisement.
Dmd  +   697d ago
Yes, the cover sucks hard - it's generic, emphasize a character you won't see most of the time (since it's an fps), and misses all the other suff that really make this unique (as enimies and locations). And yes, the american flag doesn't help it.
But you know what? Whatever. If I would care about covers, I wouldn't have games such as Batman AA, Dark Souls, Infamous 2 or ICO in my collection. It's a bummer that the "art" is horrible, but in the end, all that matters is what's inside the box.

"intelligent" bioshock fans -> know what it's about -> don't like cover -> won't turn them off of the game -> sales stay the same

"average" shooter fans -> don't know bioshock, like shooting things -> cover appeals to them -> may tip them into trying it if they hadn't seen it before -> sales go up -> more people play an intelligent game -> more intelligent games get made -> world is a better place!

Okay, it's a silly way to look at it, but better than complaining about a design choice that doesn't affect me in the slightest.
8bitHero  +   697d ago
hm i actually like it. its not the best but i like it because of the burning flag in the background. reminds me of Ulyssese's(main bad guy in the fallout NV DLCs) quote "burn away the flags, begin again."
SageHonor  +   697d ago
People are only complaining about the cover because Bioshock is a unique franchise but the cover does it no justice. It looks like a typical TPS or FPS. Generic
--Onilink--  +   697d ago
well it looks like the typical cover of any game these days, there is even an article in IGN about it, why this type of cover has become so predominant.

To be honest, i like it. Sure there are other things they could have added/changed, but i still think its nice
spartanlemur  +   697d ago
It's not that bad.
CaptainYesterday  +   697d ago
I think its badass it reminds me of an action movie poster and its just a cover who cares the game looks incredible :)
