He's saved the world quite a few times by killing those who would do harm to innocents. Overall he's an unintentional hero with ELena being his center of reason.

I like how the boss of Uncharted 2 actually pointed out how Drake is pretty much a mass murderer and no worse than he is. It's good that Naughty Dog are self aware enough to point these things out in the games.

Yes but thats like saying that when the USA invaded germany to stop the nazi's that we were just as bad as them because we had to kill people to do it. Killing in defense of innocents is not the same as killing for personal gain. There is a distict difference. then on top of that most of the killing done by nathan drake was in self preservation, its not like the bad guys are just going to let him stroll on in.

Hero ~ Why? Because that's the type of story it is. TloU will be more realistic in that sense

i like him because he

This has been explored.

Why don't we ask this question about Mario, or the gang from Gears, or Master Chief?

Or is Drake unique because he's also a thief?

People try to kill him. He kills them first. That doesn't make him a bad guy any more than anyone else in the same situation.

this^^ its just natural instinct to survive

Is Mario a bad guy that kills turtles and eats shrooms?

Nah mushrooms are is favorite treat and he's controlling the turtle (or Koopa) population!

Why does he have to be deifned as a hero or a villain?

It doesn't have to be black or white. Shit shouldn't be that simple all the time or it gets boring fast.

Nathan Drake is heroic in his shining moments; but he is motivated by self interest, be it fortune or survival, his friend's or his own.

Other than that he is aware that he lives in a world where its kill or be killed.

Hero? Villain?

Who cares!

Reluctant hero.

Mario- Hero or Murderer?
Master Chief- Hero or Murderer?
What does it take to be a Hero? Even a Hero could be a murderer, if he doesnt have any other chance to stop the evil and protect the beloved ones. There is a word and its called "instinct".People should watch the Walking Dead to understand the difference between "killing" and "Instinct to survive"

haven't you notice that most of the people that Drake murders are the same guys over and over again? I think this should give you the idea that he isn't killing hundreds of men, that this is just gameplay and you should take it as a metaphor of what's really going on and not as something so literal.

I do understand your point about Drake being a realistic character and then seeing him killing hundred of people during gameplay seuences. But you need to remember that gameplay consist of repetition and Snake is supposed to be a killer, that's why people doesn't care about how many people does he kill through the games. He says it many times on MGS4, that he is just an OLD killer... But since Drake seems so realistic and he doesn't has DA military background then... But Mario has killed a bunch of "things" too! But yeah, he isn't so realistic to begin with so his game doesn't suffer from these issues... Too many buts, I know but I'm not very good with English to be able to use a much wider vocabulary.

Yeah I remember in uncharted 1 how you killed the same black shirtless dude with a shotgun who would always charge you. Drake does kill people, but not as many as the gameplay implies. Otherwise who the heck would try to stop him from doing anything? When a man kills thousands of armed killers almost singlehandedly, you think people would want to get out of his way.

He's the hero we deserve, not the one we *blows brains out*
aDDicteD  +   748d ago
yup he is a hero, if you feel bad about killing the enemies then melee every enemies you encounter, then the body count diminishes for about half of it. just stay away for the sneak kill cause drake most of the time snaps the enemies neck.

I would have to disagree that Solid Snake is "characterless."

Has "anti-hero" fallen out of our vocabulary? Han Solo, Indiana Jones etc
zgoldenlionz  +   748d ago
I've never seen him kill women or children mainly it's bandits and maniacs bent on ruling the world so I'd have to side with hero for sure.

Would be more interested in know whether the ISA from Killzone are considered heroes, or perhaps the CoGs of Gears. Very similar situations there where it's not clear who the dicks are are.
