It was very hard to choose. I also had to take out Emma Emmerich, to my regret, so it would stay a top 5. But I can see why you would choose both Naomi and Gray Fox.
I agree with Sniper Wolf, Big Boss and The Boss but not with Vulcan Raven or Zero.
Zero I didn't feel nothing for, I know it was a big moment but nah. Same for Vulcan.
Personally I would have put Emma (MGS2) and Raiden (MGS4) getting "killed".
I would also consider The Sorrow, even though you don't find out about him until after you meet him, if you saw the links through out the game (the corpse, the image of him), you would feel sorry for him especially after Signit explains it to you.
Zero wasn't chosen because you're supposed to feel anything for him, but because the scene was so powerful and well made, and the symbolic significance of the death.
Same goes for Vulcan Raven, it's more about Snake and what he says about him, and how it is presented, than about Vulcan Raven dieing.
I wouldn't count Raiden's scene in MGS4 as a death scene because he doesn't actually die. But yeah, I agree with Emma, it was a shame there was no more room for her in the top 5.
I understand the importance he had on the series and the significance but I still felt nothing when I watched it. Actually if you going of more symbolic significance it would belong to Big Boss as he is the last to die causing the symbolism to die with him (he even makes note of it). And on top of this we actually had some character development of Big Boss through-out multiple games. Ego making Big Boss much higher on that list because we have actually seen his struggle.
Vulcan's eulogy was a reflection and summary of Snake but according to your description "Some are chosen for their importance to the story, the impact on the player, or the cinematic quality and memorability." none of that happened with me for Vulcan, thats what I mean when I say I felt nothing.
In the end of the day its your list but I feel that a few choices you made were chosen for the wrong reasons.
@ ZeroChaos: Good points. Vulcan Raven was chosen because of its 'cinematic quality and memorability'. I can understand why you would disagree with him and Zero though, but that's why it's a personal list, as you pointed out. :)
The Boss is actually the weakest character in the series, but I think she caters best to western audience. Emma 2nd and Grey Fox on top. If you can`t see that from an intellectual point of view, there`s no hope.
Love MGS3
