Bethesda is rubbish. Skyrim on pc isn't much of an improvement over the console versions. All there games suffer from a lot of issues
Nimblest-Assassin  +   1254d ago
IMHO... I think PS3 gamers shoud boycott Bethesda for all the crap they had to put up with

The game at launch was a joke, and essentially PS3 owners did not get the same product that was advertised for 360 gamers. Essentially 360 gamers got Skyrim, and PS3 owners got a steaming pile of sh*t for the same price

People were mad about the endings of Me3 (which I understand) ... but in all honesty, a studio doesn't deserve your money.. if they can't do the most important thing right GETTING THE GAME TO WORK PROPERLY!

Had the PS3 version, sold it, and got the PC version on sale... and honestly... I should have pirated it... since I shouldn't give this studio more money.

They should have held of the PS3 version to improve quality, or not realease it and scam PS3 owners out of their money... because the PS3 version is inferior to the PC and 360 versions

This article right here made me hate bethesda:

Sadly, the media buzz and marketing dollars behind a Bethesda game will make sure naive PS3 owners run out to buy the next big Bethesda game because their buds are as naive as they are.

With tactics like that, why even try to make the game as good as it can be on PS3. Look at COD PS3 sales for an example of that.
Freakazoid2012  +   1254d ago
"because the PS3 version is inferior to the PC and 360 versions " Well isnt that the case with most multi platform games? This next part isnt directed at you but your post gave me a chance to point out how silly some people have sounded lately.

Quoting Sony fans from Wii U articles. If it was more powerful it would run the multi plats without any issue at all and should in fact run them better...

Now before all the fanboys get pissed and message me, I know what I said about it should be superior if the PS3 was indeed stronger than 360 part is complete BS but it was you guys making the same claims in Wii U articles and I just wanted to give it back to you, so you could see how stupid you sound.
ALLWRONG  +   1254d ago
Good Idea, boycott Bethesda and force them to go even more Xbox exclusive.
PS-Analog  +   1253d ago
I think inferior multiplats on the PS3 has nothing to do with power but the fact that the PS3's architecture is foreign to the PC's architecture. Porting from the PC's that they develope the game on is a smoother process on the 360 and Wii U because the architecture is more similar to PC. PS3 ports need more time and money that some developers don't want to put in hence why theres some ports that are identical and why some are bad.

Wii U should have little trouble with games being ported so what ports you see on the Wii U should be somewhere near the best that they can get out of the Wii U.

That said, Sony and Nintendo fans that are arguing about the graphics on the Wii U should remember that graphics isn't what makes Nintendo consoles good.

Skyrim broke my hard drive. It froze while auto saving, I had to do a hard reset because the console wouldn't turn off.
When I turned it back on I heard a couple of strange 'clicks', then the PS3 opening screen went into slow-mo and couldn't fully load up.

Had to get a new hard drive, lost everything.
It's that before Skyrim, the most broken game I'd ever played was Fallout 3
rpd123  +   1253d ago
I agree. I have it on 360 and it's great but not without it's issues. The problems on PS3 are completely unacceptable. And even though PC players are saying that you can get mods, that means that Bethesda knowingly released an unfinished product because they know PC gamers will improve it for them.

If you don't like their games don't buy em, its that simple. I platinum'd Skyrim on PS3 in 280 hours, with a shit eating grin on my face 80% of the time. If i had spent my $60 on Uncharted 3 instead, I would have to have replayed it 18.66 times to get the value that I got from Skyrim.
Since Skyrim played virtually bug free for me I am led to assume that most gamers are just a bunch of fat doughy whiny ass haters that aren't satisfied with anything.

I agree. If you don't like them, don't buy them. For me, I'll be first in line when the next Bethesda game comes out as Oblivion, Fallout 3 and Skyrim. In the 30+ years I've been gaming, I can say beyond a shadow of a doubt that these three games are among the best I've ever played. And I have no qualms about buying them on my PS3 either as my experience has been nearly flawless. There was issues with the PS3 at version of Skyrim at launch (even though they didn't effect myself personally) that affected a minority of players and two weeks from launch it was patched. Since then they've continued to find improvements to support their product.

And as for Dawnguard, I waited a year for the Shivering Isles for Oblivion, I'm not overly concerned I haven't played Dawnguard yet.

To me, it's just people bitching for the sake of bitching. Whenever anything becomes popular, it almost instantly becomes cool to hate it. We saw it happen with Mass Effect, with GTA, with COD, with Skyrim..on and on it goes. Thankfully, the internet whining hasn't influenced my opinion regrading these fantastic games in the slightest, and never will. I always trust the opinion of professional game reviewers over kids on the internet. If I had paid any attention to the internet chatter I would have missed some of the best games this gen has to offer.

Disagree with that all you want. It won't stop me from continuing to play Skyrim to death, it won't stop me from buying Dawnguard on the PS3, it won't stop me from continuing to support Bethesda for providing truly excellent, unique open world RPG's.

Firstly, PC version of Skyrim is way better than consoles. I know because I've played the 360 and pc version. The load times are extremely fast on pc compared with consoles and the graphics and frame rate can be improved considerably. Open worlds games where the layer can do any quest at any time are not easy to make without a huge amount of bugs. I noticed very little bugs on the PC version and I've played over 300 hours. PS3 is a difficult console to develop for. Every dev have said this. Sure linear corridor games like Uncharted and Killzone are a lot easier but Skyrim is on a different scale. So play your linear games on PS3 and get your open world games on PC and stop whining.

Originally I didn't have any problems with Skyrim other than mild slow down yet I was content with that. It wasn't until the supposed fix that my game really started breaking. Now everytime I get in the water my game freezes, and generally locks up too often. This is just sad.

Bethesda should let PS3 owners get this DLC for free, just for putting up with all this crap. How can they possibly expect us to PAY for broken DLC....that game way later than on PS3.....and the basic game was broken forever as well? It better be Free as that would at least make it up a little.

If sony cant figure it out then its about time to start looking at the problems the ps3 has caused as many devs havd stated that it has issues with ram and reading from a disc at any decent speed. Sony would be screwed if they didnt put a hard drive on there console like the ps2.
TheSlasher  +   1254d ago
SHHH!, you're not allowed to say that.
Ducky  +   1254d ago
I believe the slow reading speed has mostly been overcome with the newer BluRay discs/drives.

Issue appears to be mostly ram related. The split ram usually ends up hurting the PS3 when it comes to open-world games. Then again, Bethesda's hands aren't clean either since the games could've been make less ram-hungry.
Reborn  +   1254d ago
I still believe that if you say you'll put a game on multiple platforms, your team should be comprised of individuals who can help get that job done as best as possible.

Yeah, if the console has some issues. Why weren't they doing decent research to work out how they could resolve the problems, without causing such a drastic delay? All they've done is shown how incompetent they are in dealing with tasks.
StayStatic  +   1254d ago
"Why weren't they doing decent research to work out how they could resolve the problems, without causing such a drastic delay?"

You answered your own question , more research = time & delays , failing to acknowledge that is nothing short of irrational & is not logical in any sense.

However Bethesda had no right releasing the game in the condition it was in and should have delayed the PS3 version if it had these problems, till it was ready for release.

Failing that scrap the whole thing and save the customer some money.

bystanderlead  +   1253d ago
Going multiplatform for any game series is hard, imo. You're talking about porting your code and optimizing it so that it works properly.

Game studios all have their specialties and focus in game creation, whether you like it or not. The engines that they make follow the same logic - in the vein that development becomes easier for them in a specific architecture for a specific game that they build.

Bethesda's problem lies in that. Their open world games track every single change within the environment, and this method of development hurts ps3 because of its vastly different architecture. A code revise hurts their engine as well, because they've gone multiplat - its easier and non-consuming when your engine is already set and unified (to accept assets) for all games. A change might not translate well to other development veins.

You should have minded when you bought the product, then. Or at least given it some thought. For all of this crap thrown around, at least give a moment to think about the problems that the devs have before playing around and discounting them.

IMO, the game was really going to be troublesome for PS3 - Bethesda's known to be a studio with games that allow a lot of modding, which translates to games that can be fooled around by the player. PS3 is a closed source system, and rarely (if any) do they allow mods or even condone it.

Mass Effect, Portal 2 and Batman AA are certainly not better on ps3. Two of them are Running on an engine designed for the 360.
Sashamaz  +   1254d ago
It's not easy to take someone's code and immediately know what needs fixing. Every game engine is different and achieve their results with different methods. The reason ps3 exclusives look good is because they were build on engines built from the ground up with ps3 tech in mind, trying to then do this on someone else's engine might take some time as you have to work out how everything works.
Consoldtobots  +   1253d ago
i think this just proves bugthesda devs have NO IDEA how to properly use the PS3's ram. If you can't figure out how to split up static vs dynamic world objects between ddr/xd ram should not be developing games.

Dead_by_Dawn  +   1253d ago
Exactly, why doesn't it work. Fallout 3 dlcs worked fine. Problem is their crappy code, not the goddamn split memory pool as so many people love to say due to there xbox fanboyism. Bethesda cleary sucks at coding, as their games have suffered from it in the past. A few months ago before patch 1.5, bethesda said themselves it had nothing to do with the split memory pool. So please everybody remember true facts before your fanboyism comes out. Read this.
HSx9  +   1253d ago
Just because someone mentions the PS3's split memory issue does not mean they are an xbox fanboy, they can very well be a PC fanboy as well, or they could just be criticising the PS3's hardware. However it seems to me like you are the fanboy that is getting defensive about his console.

I found nowhere on the internet this claim you made:

"A few months ago before patch 1.5, bethesda said themselves it had nothing to do with the split memory pool."

Perhaps you can link us to that quote. Also keep in mind, Fallout uses an older engine than Skyrim and less detailed textures, so there will obviously be a difference in development.

So far Bathesda has said they are working with Sony, meaning if it is possible to release on PS3, it's going to come out. If Sony can't help them, then it's obviously not the developers fault entirely.

MysticStrummer  +   1254d ago
Hmmm... *checks the technical facts*... Nope, PS3 is superior hardware for this generation of consoles, but it's differences and 3rd place status make 3rd party devs not go the extra mile to make the games they could make with it. If it was in the Wii's spot sales wise, they would. I can't believe I have to say this again, but multiplats have never and will never be the measure of a console. Nice use of your one bubble though. It's clear you just wanted to troll.
Dreamer09  +   1254d ago
Did you actually check the technical facts?
I highly doubt you did to be honest, you seem to be talking shit.
The PS3 uses the split ram method, it was implemented to shorten game development along side TEHH CELL! But it did the opposite because it was foreign tech to western devs.
Split ram, especially as low as the ram is with the PS3 prevents smooth streaming in larger games I.E Skyrim, it's practically bottlenecking the PS3.
Games like Skyrim will always suffer on Consoles, you're playing a game that requires atleast 4GIG of ram on PC and you're playing with less than a GIG on your PStripple.
Once again.
Blame Sony, open your blood eyes and stop being deluded.

"@dreamer so what's your explanation for games like infamous, la noire, and battlefield running smoothly on the PS3?"

None of those games are anywhere near as complex as Skyrim. They don't have to store that much in ram when compared to Skyrim. Skyrim, in addition to having thousands of lines of dialogue, has to remember things like who you talked to, how you affected that person you talked to, what things that person will say to you when you talk to them (keep in mind that every npc with a name has something different to say, multiple different things to say) or pass by them. It has to deal with tons of different character AI, combat AI, partner AI, it has to remember that dungeon of enemies you cleared, and every single piece of loot you passed up in case you want to come back to it later, and the specific stats for that loot, it has to remember the loot you have and all of their stats you have in your inventory and your stash wherever it is (even multiple stashes) it has to remember every single quest you completed and how you completed it because some may have an affect on the story.

It has to remember what dungeons you cleared, and plan the side missions accordingly (remember that radiant AI, where if you have previously cleared a dungeon that was part of a side quest, they'd reposition it to a new dungeon location?), it has tons of different animations to remember, it has to remember all of your skill stats, what spells you have, what moves you have, going back to character AI, not only does it have to remember the specifics of your encounter (or lack thereof), but it also has to make sure that the AI keep up with their daily schedules when you're around them, and I'm pretty sure most of those games you mentioned, the AI don't have schedules or things to do other than walk down a street and make a few comments.

It has to deal with item inventory, such as how many alchemy ingredients you have, what kind of potions you have and each potion has like 3 or 4 different strength variants I believe, it has to deal with environmental AI like water, flora, fauna (animals like deer and fish), day and night cycles, texture loading a humongous world that's quite bigger than the games you mentioned, all while looking as good as it does. And all that in addition to having to run on a small amount of ram that's not as easy to work with as it normally is since it's split ram.

I'm going to stop thinking of things to list, because by now, you've probably got the point. Games like inFamous 2 don't have to deal with nearly as much stuff as Bethesda games like Skyrim do.

On many games, PS3 runs faster because it's architecture focuses greatly on speed, not on memory limit. That's why games with semi-persistent objects run fast - you don't need much memory to store information, because most of the time, you've already computed said information and thrown it to the screen. It's new architecture, and takes a while to code too - but theoretically, on a budget, it's damned better in performance. It's downside is that you have memory to compete with, meaning every information that you have must be rinsed quickly or you'll have a problem on your hand.

On the other hand PC/XBOX360 uses the traditional setup, although modified for a bit for XBOX. The only thing PC has in advantage is that you can modify and tweak hardware to a greater extent compared to XBOX. This jack-of-all trades design concept for the PC made it quicker to develop in, and frankly easier. Your only problem in the PC is your component optimization.

Multiplatting makes development hell, because nowadays devices differ greatly in architecture. A game from PS3->PC/XBOX360 takes a performance hit, since you can't compute so many in a short time. A game from PC/XBOX360->PS3 takes memory hits, which is why you have reduced textures, lesser detail, and at some point, less objects (though frankly, it can be said to PC->console ports.

So give them slack, because frankly, if you developed the code, you'd have problems solving problems in it.
DigitalAnalog  +   1254d ago
LOL, when From software can't even program properly for the PC, the developers' talent are in question. When Bethesda screws up on the PS3, the PS3 is in question. Funny how far idiots would go to defend poor development practices.

If Bethesda continuously released buggy almost non-working of a system they KNOW they can't properly develop for, I think they could save the effort by not developing for it. I'm pretty sure the sales on the PS3 at this point barely made profit with the extra development budget designed for it.

@vickers500 Your first paragraph of all the "amazing things" Skyrim does has nothing to do with ram and deals more with the CPU and media storage especially with things like dialouge. Matter of fact, the only thing you listed in that essay that would be considered taxing on ram would be day and night cycles. Skyrims engine is poorly optimised for the PS3. The PS3 is not at fault here.
spektical  +   1254d ago
i know im not alone, but I've already lost interest in Dawnguard.. i've seen so many videos now.. and skyrim is so damn buggy on the ps3... i remember the memory dumps, thats hilarious and unacceptable for any program.
Philoctetes  +   1253d ago
I was never planning on buying any Skyrim DLC anyway. The DLC for FO3 ran horribly on the PS3, and given Bethesda's track record I assmmed -- correctly as it turns out -- that the same thing would happen this time around too.

The good news is that it doesn't look like we missed much. Dawnguard got so-so reviews, and the house armor DLC is just sad.
ado908  +   1254d ago
I don't see why sony needs to be involved in this. You pay them to release their DLC's on your platform and they seek your help to release it? They are horrible developers too horrible. They need to work this stuff on their own because it's pretty pathetic how only this studio cannot grip into the PS3's coding. You can release a huge game like Skyrim but can't release a DLC? God I wish they just hire regular modders to do their job because they obviously can't.
Kennyrocks  +   1252d ago
They should just hire a few PS3 programmers like Valve did.
2pacalypsenow  +   1254d ago
why does Bethesda get so much rep they suck if they cant make the game good on every console then they aren't very good
IIC0mPLeXII  +   1254d ago
Its just unfortunate that I can no longer purchase Bethesda made games on my console of choice. Really wish they got their shit together, but ID is the same way, same reason I'm getting Doom on 360 instead, just sad.
Belking  +   1254d ago
I hope this means there will be no more cell in ps4. It has caused too many headaches for some devs this gen.
Raoh  +   1254d ago
You don't know what your talking about. Cell is actually quite brilliant and powerful.

The problem is lack of ram and RSX
Belking  +   1254d ago
"You don't know what your talking about. Cell is actually quite brilliant and powerful."

Still doesn't mean its not a pain in the ass. My bet is that sony drops the cell. Its just causing too many problems.
Snakefist30  +   1253d ago
or they may redesign the CELL to make it easy for the devs to make games.
Kenshin_BATT0USAI  +   1253d ago

Or they may drop it (logical approach) as it would cost significantly less and be easier to go the AMD route that has been rumoured.
Raoh  +   1254d ago
PS3/Sony gets a lot of heat. But here is what will happen next gen.

The xbox and playstation will be comparable. Development will be just as easy for both.

PC's will be even more stronger than ever.

Bethesda will still release buggy games across all platforms.
cyberninja  +   1254d ago
Bethesda needs better programmers; it's that easy.
InTheLab  +   1254d ago
I bet the modders that fixed Skyrim PC could fix Skyrim PS3 in 3 days or less....
kupomogli  +   1254d ago
Sony shouldn't have to waste resources to get Bethesda's sh**ty game working. Not only does the game sell millions but Bethesda gets Sony devs to fix their games.

Sony better come out with their new console ASAP, the ps3 is a joke
ThatsGaming  +   1253d ago
I don't understand the hate...

Betheseda will get there, but 360 was probably the lead platform, and now they are having issues with porting. this sometimes happens on many games from the lead platform.
greenpowerz  +   1253d ago
Skyrim is a huge living and breathing world that is dynamic and continually remembers and processes huge amounts of data on the fly in real time with a massive world and realistic leaning graphics.

This game takes huge amounts of RAM and a capable GPU. PS3's issues have nothing to do with which platform was the lead.

The developers are not bad developers but epic developers, they simply make games unmatched in ambition and scope and in a technical sense. The only thing being the lead platform has to do with this is, if the PS3 was the lead the platform the game would not be skyrim due to the game being severely gimped and or dumbed down.

Their is no conspiracy, the developers are not bad, no one is picking on PS3. It's just that as games got more advanced PS3's true capability is showing Sony's linear exclusives and shortcut designs can no longer hide the wild claims made by Sony and fans over PS3's supposed might.
extermin8or  +   1253d ago are you on; the fact is the ps3 is ultimately overall more powerful than an xbox-just because something is not dev friendly doesn't mean the same codes can't be rewritten and adapted to run; every single other developer manages to get their games to work? Sometimes there are issues or delays however they do manage to make their games run-occasionally there are games with issues on both platforms but not to this scale-their engine is shite for starters-clearly based too much upon the last one which had similar issues-they were lazy.
Lvl_up_gamer  +   1253d ago
You are wrong extermin8tor.

Your argument implies that the hardware in the PS3 are identical in specs. They are not.

Large environment games like red dead redemption, GTA 4, operation flashpoint: dragon raising aside from bethedsda's Skyrim and fallout titles the PS3 has always had a much more difficult time performance, textures and resolution.

The PS3 excels in linear games. It just doesn't have the RAM and GPU for large scope games. The cell is powerful for a console 7 years old but the rest of the components are just not up to par causing the PS3 to bottleneck.
Legion  +   1253d ago
As has been said MANY times. PS3 is not DEV friendly. Even those dealing exclusively with PS3 only... have found tremendous issues with the system.

Not code friendly at all.
sway_z  +   1253d ago
So what's your point? ....??

Ferrari's Modena's are not as tight corner friendly compared to Ford Focus' that doesn't stop them being popular, made or moaned over....

*Not the best analogy/comparison ....but after 6-7 yrs with development kits, you'd expect developers would have learned PS3 by now.

All these so called Developers made their bread n butter on the 'hard to program PS2' and that system made a lot of studios very profitable...MS waives the cash and the developers cock out their asses!!

Shameful that it takes a bunch of 1st party studio's to prove otherwise huh? ...Memory issue my ass, there are work around's...but some developers are too profit greedy to make that investment or basically can only program PC architecture....

Sure, I'll concede most 360 multiplats are better, since the 360 is was a middle entry, but now a low powered entry level PC that developers knew how to program before it was even a thought...and have squeezed all they can out of...yet the hard to code, poor memory arc and touchy PS3 cell chip still manages to put 360 games to shame...!!!

I won't even bother to go into the whole exclusives/1st party thing...most PS3 users know there so much more to come from PS3 ...whilst 360 users get what ever MS feels will sell....Kinect, connect...disconnect ...Yawn!!!

Fan boy.
Legion  +   1253d ago
PS2 was easy compared to the PS3. If you don't make a machine developer friendly then don't expect developers to show you their love.

As for not paying for exclusives? Sure they do... it is called internal development.

And ask what they paid EA/DICE for a minimal advance exclusive on DLC for their system.

Don't pay for exclusives? Right... keep thinking your system is some how better then all the other systems in some mythical exclusive free realm.
sandman224  +   1253d ago
I was smart and didn't buy the ps3 copy or any other version. They will not get my money unless the make the game equal on all consoles!

Then you are missing out............its a great game.

Bethesda sucks bad.
fourthpersonview  +   1253d ago
I call BS.

If this were true, PS3 would already have Dawnguard.
extermin8or  +   1253d ago
no it's bethesda's shitty engine that's the problem nothing they can realistically do but restart from scratch-if Bethesda had started from scratch themselves instead of using old engines code as the base for it then this might not have been an issue.
dangerousbrian0  +   1253d ago
Ok i have an answer to all this they should program all of their rpgs if they are going to make multiplatform versions always fit in the parameters of the lowest memory pool so there is no problems. In otherwords make them play a certain way to help limitations have only specific controlling schemes and option layouts.I also want to add that the ps 3 is hard to program for comments are bullshit sony did the same with ps 2 and ps one when ever sony make consoles devs always say its hard to program for because sonys consoles are powerful beasts and they can not get their heads around them as they have to program for them differently.Unlike the pc and microsoft consoles it just feels as if they drag and paste as their consoles seem to be so easy to program for.

The only way to end this kind of thing is to stop buying their games, Complaining on gaming forums AFTER giving them your money won't change anything!!

Bethesda you make crap games. Go take a lesson from Naughty Dog.
