Warriors Orochi 3 Ultimate Review: A hack 'n slashing good time | GameZone

GameZone's Mike Splechta: "This is officially my third time reviewing this game, and each time I come back to the latest updated edition, I fall in love all over again. The Orochi series is more of a celebration of past Warriors games than a numbered title that falls in line with either the Dynasty or Samurai games. This hybrid, which mixes heroes from both of those franchises as well as throwing in some sweet surprises from Tecmo's other games, like Ryu Hayabusa from Ninja Gaiden, or Achilles from Warriors: Legends of Troy, is a fan's wet dream. Ultimate brings it home with an extensive, near nausea-inducing amount of content, with new characters, new chapters, new items and new modes."

It always baffles me how some gamers will just completely overlook certain aspects of game quality in certain genres.

FullmetalRoyale3514d ago (Edited 3514d ago )

In what way do you mean?

Sly-Lupin3514d ago

Like how some people give fighting games or strategy a free pass on single-player content, or in the case of Musou games (like this one) how people will just ignore the fact that there's hardly any mission variety and that the narrative is an unintelligible, barely-coherent mess.

DafunkyRebel3514d ago

Because nobody cares about that crap, they just want to go around and kill things, earn weapons and items, and boost their favorite characters to max

Canary3513d ago

No, people do care about that crap. That's why the older Musou games are pretty poorly regarded in average, and the newer stuff (Dynasty Warriors 7+, several of the spin-offs) are being recieved so much better.

Musou games have evolved from D or C-grade games to B-grade games, chiefly because TK has taken the time to contextualize the action.

You may enjoy turning your brain off and passing out in front of the screen while you play games, but you do not represent ANYONE but yourself.

FullmetalRoyale3514d ago

Ah. Thank you for specifying. I would have hated to misunderstand your intentions, to which I will say, different strokes.

DVAcme3514d ago

You're missing the point, dude. This series isn't about story or gameplay variety, it's about flashy combat pitting ubermensches against poor mooks, huge amounts of characters with VERY distinct personalities and loads of content. It is cathartic and entertaining. This series is actually what could be considered the modern incarnation of games like Double Dragon and Final Fight. Sure, those games didn't have much in the way of story or variety, but they delivered what they promised: lots of butt-kicking martial arts action. The Warriors games are the same way, but trump those other games in having loads of personality. The difference between Guy, Cody and Haggar is like the choice between mustard, ketchup and relish, but Guan Yu is drastically different from Yukimura Sanada who's drastically different from Lu Bu. They have lots of personality, vastly different move sets and strengths, which demands *gasp* STRATEGY to use them most effectively.

I understand if you don't LIKE the games, since I'll be the first to point out they're not for everyone, but dismissing them as shallow and monotonous is really doing them a disservice. I for one love this series, and I'll be getting this particular entry soon enough.

Sly-Lupin3513d ago

No, you're missing the point. And inventing points.

I'm a big fan of the musou games. And you know what, the better games DO have coherent narratives. They DO have mission variety. The former adds necessary context to the action and the latter provides variety to the experience. Ignoring those aspects of the game, or dismissing them is irrelevant, is damaging to the franchise as a whole.

Take this review, for example. If a musou game with an incoherent, hackneyed plot and essentially zero mission variety weighs in at a "9/10," what does that say about the musou games that DO have mission variety and well-articulated narratives? Those titles--the DW7s, DW8s, DWG1s, OPMs, SMs, etc., etc. are -BETTER- because they are -MORE- than just mindless action.

People like YOU are why the musou series takes so damned long to improve.

Xof3513d ago

Dunno why you're getting so many disagrees.

This bothers the hell out of me, too. And it's bad for gaming in general because it disincentives developers from putting much (if any) effort into those aspects of fighting/strategy/action games.

It's so goddamn half-assed. On both the part of the developers, and the gamers who are too timid to ask for better.

Games with Gold vs. PlayStation+ Free Games – August 2016

It’s that time of the month again folks. The time where gamers collectively gather all over the internet to criticize what free games they get this month. So, who plundered the other’s fanboys for all their self-worth and gratification in life? Who was the victor in July? Let’s take a look.

Hmm, Warriors Orochi actually looks like something I'll enjoy. Hell, even WWE could be fun.

Hoffmann2816d ago (Edited 2816d ago )

Warriors Orochi is awesome, Spelunky is great as well but a bit old, I bet the most people that care about that kind of games bought it already.

WWE is just a bit above mediocre and the stinker this month I think, personally I was happy that I could rent it a while ago for a weekend instead of buying it.

Yakuza 5 for PS3 is one of the best games on the system and I read that Rebel Galaxy might be great fun too. Seems it is a good month no matter which platform you prefer.

TylerFischer2816d ago

Yeah Yakuza 5 is as close to a PS4 game as you can get on the PS3. As for Rebel Galaxy, it has all the right ingredients for a great game, but it just comes up a little short in each department. Still a very solid pick up for free though.

Yetter2816d ago

Rebel Galaxy is a ton of fun. I've got it for PC but I'd like to have a free copy on xbox

TylerFischer2816d ago

Rebel Galaxy is much better on PC than it is on console.

uth112816d ago

"The time where gamers collectively gather all over the internet to criticize what free games they get this month. So, who plundered the other’s fanboys for all their self-worth and gratification in life? Who was the victor in July? Let’s take a look."

I really believe this is the reason there is so much hate every month around the free games. Some fanboys cannot stand to lose any pointless internet console battle, ever.

TylerFischer2816d ago

Yeah people love to make competition out of anything they can. It's a classic human thing to do.

rainslacker2816d ago

I'm more human than you are. I challenge you to a contest of humaness....

Outside_ofthe_Box2816d ago

Pretty much.

Online play is why people pay for Gold and Plus anyway. People were paying for Gold before the free games. A lot more people started paying for Plus after Sony put online behind pay wall.

Most aren't going to stop their subscription just because the FREE games are 'bad.' I mean even if one is delivering significantly better games than the other, are people gonna put their money where their mouth is and stop paying their sub at the expense of online play in order to get better FREE games? Nope, just pointless arguing to make the other feel bad about the FREE games they are receiving.

TylerFischer2816d ago

The losers are people who pay for PS Plus and Xbox Live and don't even know they have free games to download each month -- like most of my friends :D.

P_Bomb2815d ago

@tyler
I think you and I have the same friends, lol!

Are the free Xbox Games With Gold titles for August 2016 any good?

Neil writes "We're here yet again with the latest free Xbox One and Xbox 360 titles ready to be thrust upon us. But in a period that sees few new games released, the Xbox Games With Gold scheme for August could well be the big hitting feature that Xbox One and Xbox 360 players looking for a new game rely on. That combination therefore leaves the door wide open for the scheme to deliver a cracking set of free titles."

I already have WWE but for my taste it's a great month. Not for everyone though.

lxeasy2816d ago

I like this months options, I don't any of these games.

TheUndertaker852816d ago

Positive side for you is once you get the digital version you can lose the disc plus no download wait

ULTp0ltergeist2816d ago

Last time I played a wrestling game was on Super Nintendo no lie, but with this being gold it looks really fun to try out.

cfc832816d ago

Looks like a very useful month to me. Often i don't bother, but i will this month.

2816d ago
LexHazard792816d ago (Edited 2816d ago )

Good for me as I've never played any of the games being offered this month.

Edit: that was a lie, I played BG&E on OGXbox.

christocolus2816d ago

Lol, I played BG&E on the original Xbox too. Such an amazing game.

Deathdeliverer2816d ago

I'm going to get some mileage out of everything but Spelunky. I've played that in so many variations. I realized when I started Spelunky World online for PS4 that I simply cannot plant another bomb without blacking out. I have not played a wrestling game since the last wwe game on PS2. I'm excited to see how far things have come. Solid month for me.
