Metro Developers Explain why Redux isn't a free Upgrade

Metro 2033 and Metro: Last Light are being re-released on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC later this year, and while owners of the original titles on Steam are getting a 50% discount on the upgrade, some members of Valve's community are angry that they're not going to get the improved versions for absolutely nothing. The developers, 4A Games, have taken some time to explain just why that is, and it goes far beyond the "don't be greedy" that it could have been.

Most definitely, this is what all remakes were like back in the day before all these developers started getting overly greedy & lazy!!

It's nice to see a developer with a bit more to them than just shipping a simple copy & paste port job. Spending their time improving it rather than spending all their time & resources with pure bs & marketing crap.

I would have to say second behind halo master chief collection but this is a really good one too most of the other remasters have been updated graphics and fps and thats it

I think it is a close second to Halo: the Master chief Collection. But still a very good remastered collection.

I bought The Last Of Us and all the old Hitman games, does that mean I can demand the releases for free? the PC folks are not special

Work was actually done on this release. These aren't minor changes.

There is no reason for people to expect it for free.

The reason is cd projekt red, aka the patron saints of respecting gamers.

4A are doing ok by me. I will buy the 2033 redux as that looks to be fine value. The last light not so much, but as I only paid about £2 for the original I may pick up the redux for the sake of supporting the dev.

Speaking from a PC player perspective, I cant get behind this . They took a year to do it for Ps4 , Xbox 1 and again on PC , i'll let you do the math on how much "hard work" they really put into this one for the asking price, they could of easily given it free of charge to those who bought the game prior to X date to avoid abuse.

The complaints are over the last light, for which the PC version is pretty much the same as the existing release.

I can understand the feeling that the upgrade should get a bigger discount than 2033 as it offers so much less. But $12.49 is hardly an act of greed or evil, and as the dev says you can just opt not to buy it.

If you bought a game on a console for the full retail price and a year or so later the same game was to be released on the very same console with improved texture and bug fix , would you sincerely respect that? or would you feel it should be part of a free update? You basically paid full price to beta test the game so they could sell you the full experience later.

I can understand the need for money when bringing a game to a different platform , you need to pay the royalty fee each console ask for but on pc, on steam especially .. you dont have to pay Valve jack poop to patch your game

Seems like a good answer. It seems like the most impressive remaster to date and the fact that they even offered Steam users 50% off is surprising. We didn't get any discounts for Tomb Raider or TLOU.

I don't understand it Halo MCC my most anticipated collection is receiving praise and rightly so, the next best remaster that has been announced in quality is this and people are complaining about money off what the hell is wrong with you people.

From what we have seen so far it looks like they have put a lot of work into it, it goes well beyond just a high res texture pack and some buffed up effects and shadows.

Totally true of all versions of 2033, and totally true of the console versions of last light.

The complaints from steam users are about the PC last light redux, which has seen far less changed from the original but which still costs a bit.

Note I am not one of the complainers myself. Just explaining what is actually being said by the people that are.

This remastering of 2033 looks incredible. I'm sure LL will turn heads also.
I just don't get it...anyone with a lick of sense knows upgrades like this come at a cost. I'm sure if nothing had been said about LL, steam users would have been silent right?

4A Games actually improved their games and its sad not all developers do that they just "milk" us with HD versions of their games...

i will buy this and from what i've seen in the trailer its easily the best "remastered"

I think its arguable that last light should not cost as much as it does for such a limited change, metro 2033 on the other hand probably took quite a few hours to get done.

I can't complain over the upgrade being a "pay" than "free" product to my being an already excisting Metro customer.

I bought both 2033 and Last Light over Steam, shortly before the announcement of Redux. I'm still yet to play the originals due to "life" LOL. When the announcement came days later after I bought the originals, I wished I'd waited, but there's no way knowing these things. I'll still play through the originals and buy the remaster later on.
