Why Destiny Will be the Biggest Disappointment of 2014

Like many others, I was fortunate enough to get into the Destiny beta test last week. I have been hyped on Destiny for a very long time and have followed all of the development but after the public beta. However, I was extremely disappointed. Destiny was not the “game of the future” like the hype would have suggested. In this case, hype got players hopes way too high. There are a few fundamental issues with Destiny that are too big to fix this late in the development process. Issues so big, they could definitely be a turn off. Here’s why I didn’t enjoy Destiny.

Personally for me it's the Last of Us remaster. It hasn't lived up to the hype and mass of GotY awards. It's not a BioShock that is for sure. Apparently it's just me though.

Watchdogs for sure, but Bungie definitely has not created a Halo caliber game with Destiny. But since it releases in September it'll be a great game to tie us over for a couple months till the mass of fall games descend upon us. That is for those of us who aren't tied up in some good ol' Diablo 3.

Just because people "hate" on a game doesn't mean they're doing it just to be cool, like UnHoly seems to be doing, which is nothing more than just being a hipster. At least people here have listed legitimate reasons as to *why* they're hating on said games.

It's a *fact* that Destiny is already immensely over-hyped, just like Titanfall and Watch_Dogs were. Both of those games didn't live up to the (admittedly impossible) levels of hype the idiotic drones heaped upon them, and neither will Destiny. Now whether or not one thinks Destiny will be good or not...that's a personal problem for the individual, one I won't comment on.

Yeah, i preordered destiny, got the beta, played it and cancelled my preorder...hehe, bit ironic, is it not? It was fun for about two days, that's it. DCUO is more fun for me.

I actually had a ton of fun in the Destiny beta, and within that week I easily put in over 40 hours of gameplay (even with such limited content available).

I can't wait for Sept 9th when all the worlds are unlocked as well as all the levels, weapons and other upgradable things. Not to mention I only tried the Warlock, so I still have two other classes to explore and level up as well.

As long there is a heavy player presence in Destiny (nobody wants a ghost town when going into social areas) the game is going to be massively successful and popular. Personally I love the grinding aspect of it, I love leveling up, getting new stuff unlocking new powers etc etc. It gives me a really good reason to play aside from the gameplay itself.

Back in the beta as I loaded up the game I always thought to myself "So what do I want to accomplish/upgrade/do today?" and I LOVE that aspect of it.

Oh and I actually really enjoy Watch Dogs, aside from the sub-par graphics it is quite fun.

I played a lot of Defiance with the sound turned off and music playing through the headset, if I have the money to buy Destiny it'll be the same. The leveling,trying different character builds and the loot are the point of these games for me, I don't care about the story or social elements.

This article is the reason they should not let idiots into the beta. His complaints about the game can be null and void with the release.

First he complains about the spider tank being a repetitive fight. He says that all you do is shoot it for 30 minutes. Well thats your problem. Youre supposed to take out the legs to expose the neck, you can also shoot off the machine gun. It's 8 minutes tops if you pay attention (look for critical damage)

He complains about the classes being the same yet corrects himself and says they have different abilities. What is he complaining about then? I played all three to level 8 and prefer the warlock. He relies on grenades and having a low cool down. I mean this article will be pointless once the game is out.

Im not saying I believe destiny is perfect. Here's an actual problem that could be upsetting. Raids have no matchmaking and there are no in game guilds. That leaves you with the option of going online somewhere to get a group of 5 other people to play online at the same time for a few hours.

My initial thought was Halo + Borderlands as well, but Halo's gunplay is actually better and Borderlands has a bigger variety of randomly generated weapons. Granted, I only played the Alpha.

I don't feel it felt like a next/current-gen game. AC Unity looks like a proper next/current-gen game, so does Batman Arkham Knight, COD Advanced Warfare, Driveclub, Dragon Age, Witcher 3 and The Order. Infamous Second Son didn't play like a current-gen game but it was gorgeous and enjoyable -- way better looking than WD. WD felt like a last-gen PC game (like a multiplatform last-gen game but played with PC bells and whistles, example Tomb Raider). I enjoyed it, but it wasn't a true current-gen game.

For one thing, TItanfall doesn't have single player and is completely dependent on strong pvp to sell (unlike Destiny). Titanfall also had a lot of bots and worthless things going on in the background, which some people mistook for larger numbers than were actually available and thus problems came into play. Especially since I would be willing to bet a large number of people would gladly trade the bots 4+ more human players.

First off i have been hating on destiny for long time saying its going to flop hard . But i played the beta and i surprising liked destiny and i dislike first person shooters I like third person perspective personally . About the Pvp...Although I would love more players, 6v6 is ideal for Titanfall. Similar to how Halo is best play in 4v4 team slayer. Destiny will work best as a 6v6, its similar to team slayer.

Yes 4v4 is ideal for true competitive Halo gaming, however Team Slayer is far from the best competitive playlist. Real teams play objectives. Halo is great for many reasons online. The game offers the more lenient 8v8 BTB which is just a blast at times and most custom gametypes are best with a whole game full of people.

The ideal Halo playlist is nothing because the variety in the game offers plenty superb gametypes and player counts that each have there own reason for playing them. Many games could learn a thing or two from Halo especially when it offers much more than a game that is literally only MP.

I have friends that would call BTB, action sack, team objective, and Team SWAT the best playlists, and that is because the game is variety at its finest and allows you to pick what playlist makes Halo fun for you

creating your own map and own mini games and playing on it with 15 friends was tons of fun.

That's so true. I don't want to doom the game but there is a lot of blind loyalty behind the game that seems to be pointing the very same direction. I still play Titanfall though despite all the hatred it received from opposing people. Too bad cause its got great mechanics. Destiny feels like it should be endless and huge and now we sort of know where the edges are. Sort of takes the wildly hopeful expectations and curbs them.

I paid 60$ for this game I will with out a doubt get 30 hrs out of it and I think that's being extremely modest and that's worth it to me. Agreed. I played a bit of the beta. I found it to be pretty solid overall. I wasn't blown away by it, but I have literally played everything on the PS4 that is worth playing already.

Right now I am chomping at the bit for new next-gen experiences. This game is going to sell 8.5 million games easily, given that there is little competition out there.

I had more fun with the Destiny alpha than I had with Killzone Shadowfall, Infamous Second Son (platinum'd SS)and Assassin's Creed 4 combined, and that was just the alpha. And once the full game comes out, I'll probably add BF4 to that long list of disappointing games that weren't as fun as Destiny.

It's not the same thing. 6v6 competitive multiplayer is all there is to TF. With Destiny it's just another game mode. I want to play Destiny, but the competitive multi will definitely get the least of my time by far.

Titanfall = MP only with one vehicle type (Titan).
Destiny = MP with multiple vehicle types, Co-op, SP, seamless PVE (Public Events), Scavenger side missions, space combat etc, character customization, meaningful leveling up of armor, weapons and more.

Between overpromising (groundbreaking Borderlands?) and actual fake promises (meaningful exploration on an open world), yes, no doubt it won't deliver the promises.

The design choices are ridiculous too. Why the tacked on multiplayer instead of something reasonably new? Why not make PvP in the "open world" and opt for a Halo/COD standard overdone dozens of times already?

I'm not the author of this article but I am one of the co-founders of GH.

I'm actually surprised at how many people have given Destiny such a positive response. Although it was only the beta, they haven't introduced a single element that has not already been done many times before.

I think the game will be a success purely because a large number of console gamers have yet to be introduced to the MMO-esque style but for those a bit longer in the MMO tooth, been there, done that.

Doesn't have to have elements that other games do not have. From playing the alpha and the beta I'm glad that I'm getting mechanics that feel familiar, I'm getting to satisfy the craving of a new game, a fps and a mmorpg at the same time. The game feels solid and anyone worth their salt as an avid gamer would know to never judge a game on its story based on a beta. Bungie was so kind to give us that much to work with, they really went above and beyond with presenting something to their fans and those that were curious. eve online beta, bf3/4 beta, gold wars beta, were super buggy, small in scale and definitely weren't as polished. When you say been there, done that. I feel the same way, there is just a sense of cohesion when playing destiny that ties everything together. Even the boss battles were art first long and boring but once a system was established my friends and I got our run times down and it added a lot to the game.

the problem is people thinking they took an MMORPG and added a FPS perspective. they took an FPS and added MMO "elements". They never said it would compete with WoW or FFXIV on the amount of content presented. Everybody jumped the gun on that one, and now they're "dissappointed".

If you class it as a FPS, (which it ABSOLUTELY is!) it has head-and-shoulders more content than the best FPS's out there. CoD, BF and almost every other FPS today have 10 hour campaigns! No progression! No co-op throughout SP! No classes in SP! Possibly no SP at all!

Bungie makes FPSs... not MMORPGs. I expected a FPS with the pedigree of Halo, with RPG elements added for depth, and a killer MP.

I was not dissappointed! looking forward to 9/9!

I'm not dogging on people that like the game mate. To each their own. I don't care if I consider the game to be the worse release in a decade, if thousands (and potentially millions) enjoy the game and get their moneys worth, fantastic.

At the end of the day, it's about an individuals taste and preference. We do not pressure our writers in any way shape or form, they are free to write any articles they wish. Our one and only policy/restriction is that the article be written from an honest perspective without external influence. I can say with my hand on my heart that Matt is 100% genuine in this article.

In this particular scenario, the author felt Destiny fell short of his expectations and he wanted to share that with the world. What bothers me is that the article then gets attention from hundreds defending the game and attacking the authors opinion. Ideally I would have liked to see some people discussing why they also feel the game fell short of expectations. That would create conversation and debate, as opposed to the rather mundane I HATE YOU, NOOB SITE stuff we're seeing now :D

I personally do not expect to enjoy Destiny at release but that doesn't mean I will flame or insult those that do. I don't care if someone hates me and loves the game, as long as they're having fun - that's the point right? :D

We can't promise everyone will like what we say but we will always stick to the most honest approach to gaming "journalism" possible :D

But, you kind of just described how it's possibly doing something new. By taking the MMO-like stance and combining that with FPS mechanics, and bringing that to the console audience that really hasn't had that experience...especially with a huge budget, they are bringing something new to those people.
I have no issue with people who choose to like or dislike a game. That is a subjective thing in and of itself. But you can't deny that by taking a title like that (with a definitive statement of WILL BE) you didn't know it would ruffle some feathers.

A game doesn't have to introduce anything new to be good or even great. It just needs to do a good job at what it sets out to do.

If a game has good execution, then you only have yourself to blame for being disappointed. Just like if you buy into the hype, it's only your fault; don't blame the game or the devs.

People have an overwhelmingly positive response to Destiny because it does what it attempts to do very well, at least as far as the beta. And whatever shortcomings there are wind up tempered by the knowledge that IT'S A BETA.

I feel like the people with opinions like the writer you're defending are just looking for reasons to start something.

I think what you're missing is that it has the game play of halo, and the RPG-ness of WoW. its a PERFECT combination when played with friends and guildies. It will be massively fun. I think the only people who will be disappointed are:

1. Gaming hipsters who cant enjoy anything with hype.
2. People who play alone or with gaming hipsters.
3. People who were hoping the PvP was going to be ground breaking.

I believe most of the hate is from sour Xbox players ticked off at their god Bungie for going multiplat and also giving the Sony console more attention.

Goto any big PS gaming forum/site and you will find that the overwhelming majority of the players really enjoyed the beta and are getting the game. It's really only places like here that I see so much distaste for Destiny, mainly because the Xbox fanboy community is pretty thick here and they jump all over articles like this to downplay the game.

I for one LOVED the game, as futuristic RPG games are what I like most, such as Mass Effect, Deus Ex etc. And Destiny fits right in with those games, but with the added social bonus.

Ive played ghosts, killzone, bf4, black flag, thief, madden, ground zeros(though a demo), wolfenstein, warframe, war thunder and watch dogs and destiny beta. Ghosts online was same old bs.thief was terrible. Watch dogs in gta with gadgets didnt even finish. My top three so far were wolfenstein, black flag and destiny beta. Lotta hours in.

Journalism is flooded with contradictions. I get that Destiny is one of the most hyped games ever, and that comes with great expectations. But why can't those games get the pass because of the otherwise well used statement "Games are all about having fun"? Is it, or isn't it!?

I mean, this article is unfair. It's an FPS. You shoot and avoid enemy attacks. That's what it's all about! But suddenly that is not good enough, which also indicates that every single "good guys vs bad guys" game yet released is just as boring? What the f did you expect?! You want the genre to evolve, I get it. But in which way do you expect that they could change the core of a FPS? We get a big scale, multi alien race, warfare game with good graphics, lots of places to explore and stuff to find and upgrade. Perhaps this has been done before... i really enjoyed the Beta, only played as the Titan because i like being able to use those heavy weapons and tank a bunch.

Thought the PVP was brilliant and i can see myself really getting into it, really enjoyed the PVE too but felt like the exploration missions were uncreative - go to place - kill 10 things - collect 20 things - it didn't enrich the experience at all but it at least gave you something to do.

I suppose the way you have to look at it is, even if you don't enjoy the story, when you play the PVE you'll at least find some new loot and unlock abilities that you can use PVP.

I had a lot of fun with both the alpha and the beta, also it was a nice surprise to get access to the moon (that story mission was actually pretty fun). The classes do have some noticeable differences mostly in mobility (although seeing as how what we got was such a small sampling, didn't get to see any sub class stuff, hell I only managed to max out the first row and a couple in the second row of abilities for the 3 classes).

As for the boss fights that were available being uninteresting, well of course it would be boring if all you did was hide in a corner taking pot shots for 1/2 an hour. I'll give you the Devil-walker, but it goes down so fast who cares, it's more like a mid-boss (although depending on who's around, its allies can get to be a handful, also that bastard fell on me and killed me once, lol). Sepiks Prime (as well as Fallen Captains and Wizards), will teleport around if you actually fight within the arena. In addition to the mortar shots, Wizards even throw out a debilitating cloud that makes you slower while you're in it, making you a fish in a barrel for all its allies (which they all have back up that constantly floods in).

Hell, I can't wait to go back in, no hype just personal preference. Destiny is like comfort food (it feels good and is fun), isn't that 'fun' why we play "games" in the first place?

It won't be a disappointment as long as people take it for what it is and not expect something that is the scale of WoW. Destiny is a not a MMO since the massive part isn't there only so many people in a area so more of a junior multiplayer online. They already said plan on supporting the game for a decade, that doesn't mean just this game a sequal could happen or just expansions. I tried to read the article but when he started off calling it an MMO an comparing it to actual MMOs I was done. Lol article is a joke, Titanfall brought nothing new, except that mechs an foot soilders would be on the same battlefield. Watchdogs, I knew was going to be a flop. Ubisoft still hasn't figured out how to bring a engaging, open world to life.

I had a blast with Destiny an find it as something refreshing for the FPS scene. It brings all the great things from MMOs, an RPG's an combines that with Halo. I couldn't ask for more, an if you don't like it don't play it or purchase it.

My honest opinion? I loved the concept, the art, classes, everything about the game. I loved the E3 demo that we saw last year. It looked like everything that I'd ever hope for.

But there was something lacking in the Beta... What I had pictured was some kind of World of Warcraft world structure where you could travel everywhere to whichever location you'd want without loading screens. That, to me, was the biggest let-down and kinda destroyed my immersion. The second thing is that we didn't get to drive our own ship? I was hoping for some kind of exploration , traveling from planet to planet on your own. I know it sounds extremely ambitious, but they talked a lot about having your own personal ship in the game a long time before they revealed any kind of gameplay. I remember seeing concept art of space.

Anyway. The gunplay feels spot on, I like the leveling system, I like the hub and I really enjoyed the world that they have created. So I will buy this game. I'm just disappointet that it could be SO much more than it is..

2. It's not so much the time it took, rather the mechanics around the bosses. There's absolutely nothing to it, no environmental integration. So maybe it doesn't take exactly 30.00 minutes to beat, but the idea is that there's no pizzazz.

4. I don't want the entire plot to be spoiled, I want a general concept of what was going on. It was hectic (too much going on at once) and poorly presented. I also would like to care about the story and Destiny failed to grab me.

I found this article to be kind of, well dumb. Yes Destiny is technically an MMO(FPS), so why are you comparing it to MMORPG's? Destiny has rpg elements yet, it is created as mainly an online small co-op game as the likes of warframe. Completely different games while all being mmo's.

Secondly, complaining about the first and easiest strike in the game for being too easy to figure out and repetitive? Sure, yes! I agree. It's to give you an idea of how much hits a boss will take in a simple version so you know what to expect from other bosses coming up.

All classes feel the same? Gun mechanic's-wise? Yes! I also agree. Yet the special being the only thing that sets them apart? No. Each class has different styles of jumping which can be an advantage or disadvantage in different situations. Also the grenades and base stats (armour,agility,recovery, etc.) you get are also different.

People get carried away in hype that's why I tend to keep realistic views of what to expect from a game. And from my play in the alpha and beta, even through the announcements of how big the world is. I'm still excited about this game and its endgame content that is still relatively unknown.

Destiny being the biggest disappointment? If you have nonsensical excessively high expectations of a game in which you believe all the rumours and early development ideas/hopes for the game. Then you should calm down and realize the limitations of consoles we still have. Reality is the games from last gen won't be much bigger or not even 1080p/60fps.

I just wish once that someone who writing negative about Destiny gets their facts straight. First, this game is NOT an MMO. It has elements from it, but it's not. Second, the budget is not $500 million for this game, Activision already confirmed that they will commit to investing $500 million through 10 years, including sequels. Third, it was a beta, to test serves and mechanics, not for us to unlock all the abilities and get invested into a story. I am so sick of people saying "I know it's a beta" and then attacking the story, the difference in classes, and the scope/size of the game.
