I am a fanboy and proud of it! Look, we all like certain things... I loved PSone and PS2.... but original Xbox blew me away, went with 360 and later PS3.... with PS4 and X1, got both on launch day, as simply for the best in gaming, you need both.... its ok to praise things, but fanboyism has gone way too far in rooting out nothing but negative news. All sides are guilty... I was not registered member here back in early 360 days, and did see gloating, but must admit, today, fanboyism is on steroids...its also a full time job for some here, do not know were people get the time to spend all day here posting negative BS, yet they have time to 'play' the latest games and know everything inside out about the industry, more than those working in the industry.....

My train of thought is there's a little of fanboy tendency in all us. Just that they don't know it or can admit it.

Looking at myself objectively you can say I'm just a blatant fanboy but I usually do this to troll people and get a rise out of people. And also debate. But if you look past what I just say I usually own all the systems and play all the worthwhile and meaningful games.

I comment in articles for all platforms, and I say what I genuinely think. I've been bubbled down and labelled a troll in PS articles where I didn't agree that some game was the greatest ever. Like I said, I've been called an XB fanboy more than once.

However the rest of it just seems purposely inflammatory. There are obnoxious fans on both sides of the argument for sure. While I have no doubt you've run into some particularity abrasive Sony Fanboys, I dont think this makes the group as a whole any different than the others.

For the purpose of attempting to explain the phenomena you see I will provide an example.

Let's say there is an article attempting to gain hits by highlighting a resolution difference between consoles.

So let's compare the most simplistic insult that can be provided by both camps based on this article.

Sony Fanboy: Xbox sucks and can't play this game or any game as well as my console of choice.

Xbox Fanboy: Well your console doesn't have any games and the resolution doesn't make a huge difference

So which comment seems more rude? One basically says your console will always be bad, the other says your console sucks right now. Both statements are flawed but their is a difference in perception when there is condescension from the supposed winner's seat.

Or put more simply, people dislike people acting like sore winners more than they dislike people acting like sore losers.

I only own the ps4 and currently have no intention of getting the Xbox One yet I've been down bubbled and ridiculed a few times by Sony fanboys for being an Ms fanboy. People are fanboys of everything. Religion, political, music, sports teams, food, pretty much everything. The difference with gaming is people just throw around the word fanboy whenever they don't have an argument. Have to disagree with you. When someone displays a fanatical devotion and refuses to accept legitimate (relevant to topic) criticism of a company, that makes them a fanboy. I see the term as more accusatory than defensive (although many use it as the latter).

For example, i am a fan of the Xbox brand but i will wholly admit that MS' only recently handling their fanbase properly after the past few years of negligence. While I dislike the company, i don't see it as a reason to deny the platform if it has good games. If i still don't feel comfortable supporting the company if i decide to get an Xbox One later, i'll buy used. This is the kind of mindset a non-fanboy Xbox fan might have, among others.

I find it funny how we all love games, but many still fight like dogs even with the same passion. In other forms of entertainment and art like literature and film, there's usually a general consensus and contrarians will still likely have the maturity to admit that they can still respect what they dislike and see why others love it. I honestly think people just try to justify their 400-500 dollar purchase by pretending what they didn't buy offers nothing. In reality all consoles offer something and, especially if you have wide interests, are worth owning.

Well said. I would disagree with the justifying a purchase argument to a ceertain extent though. Other forms of entertainment have been around much longer and have a demographics ranging across all ages.

Older gamers are few and far between comparatively speaking as gaming used to be more of a niche market than it is today. I'm hoping as the younger generation of gamers get older the capacity for considered argument and debate rather than shit slinging will grow.

Never thought about it like that in regards to older gamers from the niche days and the kids of todays mainstream phenomenon that gaming has become.

Hopefully by the start of the next generation we'll have a few more grown up, rational folk that don't need to justify their purchase by dismissing the "competition" flat out :)

Consoles are comparable, so it makes sense there.

Consoles have always been direct rivals; it's rather natural, then, that their fans will rub any advantages- perceived or otherwise- in the other side's face. Whether it's graphics or exclusives or looks, you can compare them. They're all similar products with similar constraints, inputs, etc.

... and then along come PC gamers, touting superior whatever, as if what they claim is somehow relevant, but it never is.

It's like Xbox versus Playstation are racing, but PC comes in first even though they didn't register.

It doesn't take a Psychiatrist to deduce the constant fanatical ramblings of a Fanboy extend way beyond Video Games. Ironically, you will notice how Fanboy's often blame, or accuse each other of being a Fanboy. I know, if it wasn't so sad, it would be hilarious!

This behaviour has more to do with unaddressed self confidence and low self esteem issues. There's absolutely nothing wrong with being passionate about your favourite Console, Sports Team or whatever you choose to align yourself with.

But when it impeads on another persons enjoyment or choice? I think there's a fundamental problem with that ;/

If the console war is more intense now (as the article claims) I think it's because of how similar the two systems are. So fanboys have to argue louder to prove that the other system is vastly inferior.

If the difference between systems is obvious. Then fans of each tend to ignore each other more. The differences speak for themselves.

I like gaming and going to gaming sites. But I agree with the video in the sense that most forums turn into needless rude comments. Just play the games and have fun is what gaming is about. I've been gaming since the 70's and these last 2 gens of consoles have really lost touch with what gaming is about.

I'm sure I've been pulled into some arguments I wish I hadn't. Back in the day friends would come over to play games and have fun. We didn't bash each other over sales and which company is better. But nowdays things are different and gaming sites are very hostile. I miss the good ol days.

Fanboyism in the gaming community didn't really come to fruition until the Xbox 360 generation. I came to the conclusion that this phenomenon happened because kids grew up and X360 was their first console. To many teenagers and young adults, X360 was their first console that they've ever bought for themselves. Just like the first things you buy for anything, you're going to have a huge attachment to it.

On the business end, Microsoft used dirty business tactics. That's what they did. No lie. Their PR campaigns usually smeared the competition during every turn and that obviously transferred onto their fans as well.

Given that their fans were young and impressionable, they took this and magnified it x100. Their immaturity though proved to be MS's downfall by the end of the gen. It allowed Sony to fix almost everything Xbox fans were yelling at them and eventually Sony became a juggernaut in the software space. It didn't stop there though. They took the criticism and fixed it on the hardware end as well (for the next/current gen).

Taking things back a bit, I grew up in the Atari/Nintendo generation. Fanboyism was unheard of. It continued to be unheard of until the 360 generation. Back then, you took consoles at face value. If they had the games you wanted to play, that's what you got. If it didn't have the games, you still admired it when you were at a friends house. I was a PS guy but I always loved playing 64 games at my friends house. Even in the PS2 generation, I still had a GCN and a Xbox b/c I had a job and I liked certain kind of games you can only find on each platform.

Final point: MS of the original Xbox and MS of the new Xbox 360 were like night and day. They were a lot less bullish and they didn't resort to cheap tactics to win. The new team may have scored the $$$ but they set awful things into motion that we are still paying for or affected by.

There was plenty of fanboyism where i grew up between sega and nintendo, many times i had to hear about better colour palette, processor, games, etc. Fanboys go back well before microsoft decided to make a console.

M$ fanboys have been a problem simple because they won't accept facts. The 360 was a jerry rigged DVD player with no Wi-Fi (the wii had wifi...), no standard HD out (no HDMI) and used ps1 style memory cards (remember those) for game saves. Yes, they continued the jerry rigging and slapped on wifi, HDMI, and an HDD but no other system in the history of gaming had such a fan boy base to support so many strap ons.

They tried to find ways to make it sound as if the Xbone was more powerful.

The problem with fanboyism today where its all about the console then the games. Back in the Sega and Nintendo days it was game vs game, now its just console vs console. I been gaming before the NES and I still buy the platforms where I believe have the better games for me, and I never judge anybody else. We are lucky enough that Sony/MS/Nintendo are out there making gaming consoles in the first place because they don't have too.

I think a LOT of what you are saying goes to the fact that the information age gives us access to more ammunition. Back in the NES vs. Sega days, we didn't have GOOGLE to instantly back up a sales claim. We would have had to wait for some blurb in a magazine to gather some facts. Plus, the internet allows for an anonymity that is unrivaled by what we had in that time. In the NES v. Sega days, you'd actually have to face that person again. On the internet, you can just ignore them.
In the end, I think that MANY fanboys do it just for trolling purposes anyway. There is probably a small minority that do believe what the spew. But, many of them enjoy being trolls and being the focus of conversation. That is a forum phenomenon that you see in just about any genre. Even on your favorite sports team forum, there's always that person that HAS to see everything as a negative. Yet, somehow, he is supposed to be a "fan". What they get out of that negative attention is beyond me. But, I believe that's what they are looking for...attention.

i own both and while i appreciate the ps4 for it's better specs, everything else sucks, the games, the features, the online, even the voice chat quality sucks, but it'll be my multiplat system simply because everyone else has it.

but i also appreciate the xbones features, its games like halo & gears and it's online service. if the xbone just had thrown away that piece of trash kinect & went with a beast gpu, maybe improve the the design, the vcr look ain't great, then they would've won the war,

it all goes down to the cheapest & what features matter, kinect did not matter & neither did the high price tag, it was a funeral waiting to happen.

soon as fanboys just shut up & accept both consoles have flaws then things can be improved. we are already seeing 1080p being easier to do on xbone & i hope sony improve its features & games library as we're sick of indies.

I loved the PS3 but there are a lot of Playstation owners who take excessive joy in regarding Xbox owners as nothing more than a bunch of ill-educated sheep. Xbox One is going to be the only console to play Remedy's next game Quantum Break so I take offence at the idea that I think Playstation buyers implicitly have that they are more 'artsy intellectual'.

To regards to the article, it's a disorder. If you have to comment on every article that is contrary to what you prefer. New game trailer videos that are exclusive to one console contrary to your preference on YouTube. Disputing with someone for saying, I cant wait for this game and such like.
