Now in world sales, I can't see the PS4 falling behind the X1... unless something completely unexpected happens.

The Xbox One might outsell the PS4 during certain months here and there when a big game releases. There is nothing to support the argument that Microsoft is even close to doing so consistently. The Xbox One hasn't even crossed 5 million something the PS4 did a long time ago.

The crazy thing is, the PS4 is doing this with a relatively weak exclusive line up so far. When the big games start dropping in 2015 this could get out of hand.

I've been thinking the same thing. 2014 hasn't been great for any platform, but it's been especially lacking in the exclusives department for Sony considering how high their expectations are in terms of delivering arguably the best exclusive games.

So, when 2015 kicks off with The Order, then Bloodborne, No Man's Sky, Uncharted 4, not to mention all the announced new IPs that we know Sony has...you're right; it could get out of hand.

Quantum Break looks great and we already know Halo and Gears are coming in 2015 (yeah, total shocker there), but Microsoft better have some tricks up their sleeve.

The Slim is meant to be a mid cycle refresher to an aging product which help re-invigorate customer perception of the product just like car face-lifts.

This should be done when you reach a sales plateau or steady decline in sales for any reason not just as a reaction to what the competition is doing.

The Slim will come when the parts become more efficient so they can make a smaller design, and to add a whole new look to renew interest if sales start to fall. Sony needs to be profitable so if they can make the hardware for cheaper with a new slim model they will.

They wont ever fall behind the Xbone in total sales.. Maybe the odd month in the US Xbone will outsell it but in total PS4 will dominate this generation now.. The PS3 outsold the 360 worldwide leading to it overtaking it in the end and the ps4 is a lot stronger console than the ps3 and the xbone has a lot less strength than the 360.

Don't forget the 360 had a year headstart and the PS3 was more expensive, but the PS3 still passed it. How you support your console, consumers, and developers is what's going to carry you the distance. This time around they both started the race at the same time, but the PS4 is stronger and cheaper, and Microsoft tripped on the first hurtle. I honestly believe they're going to dominate pretty much this whole generation.

Looks like the Slim will be here at the start of the new year. Sony has nothing that can compete with Halo. Hell Gears is more popular than the uncharted franchise. Even price with Halo MCC Bundle Holiday 2014 vs ? for ps4. XB1 won NPD one month during the 2013 holiday at $100 more.

Sony better hope people don't learn they can play Destiny on XB1 along with Sunset Overdrive, Halo MCC, and Forza Horizon 2. My darn nephew didn't even know Destiny was multiplat, once he learned that it was a no brainer.

I mean seriously: Forza 5 launched with X1 back in November and now Forza Horizon 2 drops in September? That's a mere TEN months between Forza titles. Please someone tell me why in the world we need two Forza games ten months apart. Gimme a break.

And then you have Microsoft's true cash cow that ran out of milk in 2007: Halo. So, we know of The Master Chief Collection and Halo 5, but apparently that isn't enough because a recent article said they're working on ANOTHER Halo. We're probably looking at three Halo games within the next year to two years. Give it up already.

Lastly, it's pretty ironic that Sunset Overdrive will arguably be the best X1 game of 2014 and it was made by a studio who is basically a Playstation developer. Oh well, Truefan, at least you'll finally get to experience what a good game is like.

Except, that is not how it works. They release slim model when they figure out how to move their process to a smaller size which reduces heat and needs less spaces or smaller fans for ventilation. This reduces cost. That is when you will see a Slim PS4, when they figure out how to make a cheaper cooler solution. Has nothing to do with competition.

Sony will not release a "slim" PS4 until they move to a new fabrication process for the APU.

Currently the APU inside both consoles (Xbox1 and PS4) is manufactured on the TSMC 28 nm process node. The move to TSMC's 20nm process is a while off yet. And I think it unlikely that AMD will make the move straight away.

Chips made using TSMC 28 nm process node offers excellent performance and efficiency, while yields are reportedly very good. It would make little sense financially to retool so soon. The inherent costs in doing so are substantial.

Further more it would be completely pointless for Sony to revise the design of the PS4 without having a cheaper more energy efficient APU to put inside. Again, the costs involved with retooling their own manufacturing plants would be substantial and pointless so soon in the Consoles life.

Sony will release the next hardware refresh as soon as it's ready to go. The sooner they get a unit out that is cheaper to manufacture, the better their margins will be. Maybe still not profitable on each box sold, but at least getting them closer to that goal, and the sooner they can do that the better.

Sony's only goal is a nice fat bottom line on their quarterly and annual financial statements. That's something they haven't been able to achieve in a while. They're not going to sit on a product that will help them improve their financials for a while because of some fanboy war over which console sells more units in any given month. There is no big red nuclear product launch button that they are biding their time to press.

As to the PS4 slim - I have seen tear downs of the PS4. There isn't a lot of room to make things smaller and unless they get rid of things like the Blu-Ray drive there isn't a lot they can do. I realize chip manufacturing is always becoming more efficient with smaller chips, but the chips are already as small as the factories can make them and it will take those factories years probably to be able to make the chips even smaller, which will be necessary for an even smaller PS4.
