Why Exclusives Need to Live: The Importance of Identity

Sean Halliday of Pixel Gate writes:

"Recently, a short article went around named ”Exclusives Need to Die’.” It created some discussion and promoted some interesting points. On the whole, I disagreed with the main point presented, mainly as it wasn’t put forward very well, but the post set off some cogs in my head, and soon I was thinking about why exclusives are needed, and why they tend to be staples of a generation of systems and games."

How is this even a topic? Would you like to play Uncharted on Xbox and Halo on Playstation. It sounds good if you think about it, but what's the point of owning 2 or 3 consoles that will play the same games? Hahaha

What you said is utterly devoid of any sense of reality. It's almost as bad as your comment on our Mario Kart post that had nothing to do with the content lol. Business.

1st and 2nd party exclusives I can understand as still being a selling point. 3rd party ones...not so much.

Game companies are like politicians. They want your vote (purchase) and will talk up anything that gets attention.

so when you have a 3rd party that is making an exclusive game for a platform, that is akin to a politician saying they have an exclusive backer to help promote their presence in the public eye.

Some times there are 3rd party exclusives that should have remained more neutral and been supportive of the industry as a whole. Mainly because they would tend to back the wrong horse and come up short in the end.

The consumers are the voters. We vote with our wallets but we also need to know when there is political spin put on things that is meant to paint things in not so flattering light. We owe it to ourselves to be smart and read between the lines when it comes to such situations.

"Why buy one console that does everything when you can buy 3."

@N4G
We do U guys alway keep track of our comments, isn't that considering stalking lol

@Naruto
Really you don't understand do you Naruto I forget Naruto doesn't understand complex situation but that's my friend unfortunately, Ok exclusives separate and give identity to certain like Halo is on Xbox and is known as the ShooterBox Mario is on Nintendo and makes it the KidFriendlyBox and Uncharted and JRPGs are on playstation, and they are known as the JRPGBox or JapaneseBox.

That's importance of this article Naruto.

Exclusives might seem silly, but the fact is that the rivalry between console manufacturers is the main driving force behind quality. It always has been, ever since the SNES vs MegaDrive/Genesis continually pushed forward with Mario/Sonic, FF/Phantasy Star etc. Exclusives are a key part of that as console manufacturers do their best to secure great games for their system.

A one-console or exclusive-less future could be a meritocracy, but just as likely, would mean that great games can get lost in a flood of complete crap. As we're seeing on Steam at the moment.

TL;DR: exclusives are a good thing, because console rivalry keeps companies *relatively* honest and quality high. Long may it continue.

Exclusives need to live. Its the point of competition

While I agree with the author has to say in regards to the importance of exclusives. I will say though that with Playstation Now and Xbox Live Cloud service will render consoles irrelevant. Moving away from the silly hardware war to which console manufacturer can deliver the better service.

Exclusives are the reason I gave Sony a chance with the PS3.
