Why Nintendo Won E3 2014, Even Though No One Wins E3

As our possibly slightly over-wrought splash this week should have made clear, I don't really think anyone 'wins' E3.

That's not to say the world's biggest video games show is anything less than ruthlessly competitive -- but it's not a zero-sum, well, game. The more good titles there are, the better. The the more hype E3 generates, the longer we can luxuriate in its warm glow like a big, creamy, pre-rendered bath. (I like baths.)

And when it comes to games I'm essentially just greedy. I want more, whatever it is. I want to gaze to the distance of Holiday Season 2015, or Q2 2017, or whatever decade a consumer Oculus Rift chooses to arrive, and while away my remaining days on this Earth dreaming of a brighter, higher-definition version of FIFA, and preferably something even more interesting I didn't expect too. I want more good games, please. Preferably now. That's it.

I gotta give props to Nintendo for that conference

darthv723602d ago

Now it begs the question....would they make a robot chicken series with nintendo characters? Even if it was a weekly thing like they used to do for the nintendo channel.

you know there were moments when you could just hear explicit words wanting to come from those little characters.

Apex133602d ago

They are still streaming live experiences at E3. Excellent job!

They really pulled out the stops for gamers even if not a lot of games to see.

Madock3602d ago

Bayonetta
Smash
Mario party 10
Hyrule warriors
Kirby
Yoshi
Toad's adventures
Xenogears
Project STEAM
Life story
& the Myamoto projects all as live demos, so there were a few of them

Vs Sony with a CGI trailer for Uncharted as 1st party

OtakuDJK1NG-Rory3602d ago

xenoblade chronicles x not xenogears

Madock3602d ago

Appreciated -)
forgot to mention Splatoon as well

KonsoruMasuta3602d ago

I thought it was said that the Uncharted scene was not CGI.

ABizzel13602d ago (Edited 3602d ago )

Once again you can prefer one platform without bashing the others, and the Uncharted trailers was in-engine and a part of the actual game all running on PS4.

Once again IMO no one won E3. I felt everyone could have done better. Zelda, Smash, and Bayonetta are my most anticipated on Wii U. Uncharted, Bloodborne, No Man's Sky, and The Last of Us from Sony. And both Halo's and Sunset Overdrive, from MS (as far as E3 2014 showings go for all).

Nintendo pretty much confirmed that Western 3rd party support is dead on Wii U. Their main support Ubisfot didn't announce any of their worthwhile games coming to Wii U, Watch Dogs still isn't out and many of the huge 3rd party games such as Far Cry 4, Batman Arkham Knight, Rainbow Six Siege, Assassin's Creed Unity, MGS5, GTAV, Battlefield Hardline, Destiny, Evolve, The Crew, and The Division are all skipping the Wii U, and I'm sure everything EA is working on worthwhile is skipping the console as well. That's not a win IMO.

Exclusively they're finally getting games out, but many of those are 2015, as well as exploratory versions of games they already have out Yoshi and Toad's adventures are New Super Mario Bros. and Super Mario 3D world exploratory edition, and we've seen games like Yoshi, Bayonetta, Xeno, and Smash for 2 / 3 E3's now.

Everyone had a B showing this year, it was just good to see Nintendo actually trying and not having their usual oddball performance.

AWBrawler3602d ago

How could you ignore the rookie of the year, Splatoon? put that on your list

Madock3601d ago (Edited 3601d ago )

I wasn't bashing, i was simply comparing 1st party titles from both companies, Nintendo had the above list while Sony and MS had 2 titles each, no actual gameplay (sunset overdrive mind u ), just a cut scene (let's face it, Uncharted is a cut scene then jump then shoot then another cut scene and so on.. not seeing the jump and the shooting was upsetting for me)

And yes Splatoon actually is un missable, added it in a further comment, devil's third too although it's still a 3rd party title

ABizzel13601d ago (Edited 3601d ago )

@Madock

Nintendo also is going into their 2nd year, so by all means they should have more games, and the games you listed aren't all first party, and are only from the E3 conferences. Regardless of first party or not, and exclusive is an exclusive. It still takes development time, and the producers money to make it, and Bayonetta, Hyrule Warriors, and more shouldn't be on your list if you're limiting it to first party only.

Considering all that was shown and known, exclusives for all platforms were:

MS:

Halo 5
Halo MCC (WindWaker HD, was considered an exclusive )
Sunset Overdrive
Forza Horizon 2
Crackdown
Phantom Dust
Scalebound
Fable Legends
Inside
Killer Instinct Season 2 (technically DLC)
Shape up (could care less personally)
Dance Central
Disney Fantasia
Project Spark (PC / XBO)

and while not at E3 we still know Quantum Break and Gears are coming as well.

Sony:

Uncharted 4
Bloodborne
Drive Club
The Order
Ratchet and Clank
Everybody's Gone to Rapture
The Last of Us (WindWaker HD, was considered an exclusive )
No Man's Sky (PS4 / PC only thus far)
Planetside 2 (PS4 / PC only)
Deep Down
Entwined
Grim Fandango
Little Big Planet 3
Let it Die
Natural Doctrine

And we still don't know what most of Sony's first party studios are working on, as well as games such as The Witness, Rime, Shadown of the Beast, and more.

So again it's not as black and white as you make it. And on top of those line-ups Sony and MS also have full support from Activision, Ubisoft, EA, Warner, 2k, Bethesda, and more 3rd party developers who all pretty much proved their passing up on the Wii U.

So add to their line-ups:

Destiny
Call of Duty: Advanced Warfighter (might come to Wii U)
Assassin's Creed Unity (Wii U might get the last gen version)
Far Cry 4
The Division
The Crew
Rainbow Six: Siege
EA pretty much said their done, so their games when they release
Batman Arkham Knight
Mortal Kombat X (might come considering Injustice)
GTA V
Evolve
Dying Light
Bethesda (hasn't released anything worthwhile on Nintendo platforms is generations)
And MUCH, MUCH more

So yeah once again, cherry picking doesn't help anyone win a debate. It simply shows you're a fanboy. Nintendo had a good showing for exclusives, but they also proved their Western 3rd party support is pretty much dead on the console.

Contradictory headline is contradictory

LOL_WUT3602d ago

Just look at who's submitting this article... Not really surprised. Btw anyone else saw those two projects Miyamoto has been working on? Man do they look awful ;)

KonsoruMasuta3602d ago

The other two don't catch my eye but Starfox is looking good. Most of the people who played it said it was good.

thehobbyist3602d ago

Yeah, anyone could say that about a project that barely has a playable demo. I'm not sure if you've ever seen a game in early/pre-alpha stages but it NEVER looks good. Your point is moot.

Awww look at the little fanboy getting mad at all the positive Nintendo news lately ;)

LittleBigPlanet 3 Servers Are Officially Shut Down 'Indefinitely,' Sony Confirms

Sony has confirmed that LittleBigPlanet 3 servers on PlayStation 4 will remain offline “indefinitely” following troubles with the service from earlier this year.

3d ago
rlow13d ago

Sad day, hopefully they’ll allow a third party server solution. Goes to show game preservation is an uphill battle.

blackblades3d ago

Sad day oh wait everyone that whining about it didn't play it or haven't played it in years and never was going back to it. Funny how people start to care when this happens but when it was actually up those same people didn't even pay attention to it.

rlow12d ago (Edited 2d ago )

First, you don’t know who has or hasn’t played it. So that’s your assumption. Secondly, even if people haven’t played it in awhile, it’s still nostalgia. Those memories of sharing your creation and having fun playing other peoples creations. Third, no game out there is really like this or as iconic. Today if they made this they would nickel and dime the whole way through and it would launch broken.

Cacabunga2d ago

Reason why i really dislike online games.. they become unplayable over time.. LBP story mode is actually only a tutorial

_Decadent_Descent2d ago

How would you know who's played it or not? What about those who get into games years after their release? They can't now. Besides, and more importantly, this sets a bad precedent across the industry when it comes to game preservation and people's ability to enjoy what they've paid for.

blackblades2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

People still play it but not a lot probably a fee people and I know you 2 guys haven't played it in a long time. If the server was doing so good it wouldnt be shut down. As I said the same people that whine and cry saying bad things on Sony etc are the same ones that havent or stopped playing a certain game in years. Let me ask you guys straight up and y'all tell the truth have you guys played it recently and when you did for how long did you play it.

SonyStyled2d ago

@blackblades “ Let me ask you guys straight up and y'all tell the truth have you guys played it recently and when you did for how long did you play it.”

Whatever “straight up” and “y’all” is, I can tell you the “truth” to answer your question.

I’ve been playing LBP2 for the past 5 years, I have 10 levels to Ace in a row and a coupe more hours in create mode for platinum. I played LBP2 earlier today in crate mode.

It sucked when LBP 1 and 2 servers were closed on PS3, but all those creations were still playable on PS4 LBP3.

Every level creation since LBP1 can’t be played now

CDbiggen2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

Just disappointing. I have such nostalgia for this game and the user levels from LBP 1&2 and I already was gutted when they were shut down but at least they were on LBP3, and now this means I can't ever revisit those creative worlds again. All because some trolls or whatever decided to exploit these games, of all games, for some reason.

just_looken3d ago

What needs to be highlighted by this is that the series has had 4 main games then that go kart spin off yet sony let them all die.

There is 0 games like this on ps5 and to my knowledge 0 first party main kids games no tech demo crap

Sony purchased Media Molecule studio the ip then tossed it away letting it rot for over 7 years yet the community carried on until now were we have lost 16 years on all games of content along with no replacement.

Everyone goes on about ea killing studios but sony has killed way way more but its fine its sony they can do no wrong.

Before the sony blidboys track me down again go fire up your holy boxes all the dlc they tossed out all the trophies and all the user content needs a server side handshake that no longer works. Yes offline single player version 1.0 works but that is it.

Media Molecule was not cut i know but they only made LBP and dreams it was reported they just missed the chopping block
https://gamerant.com/little...

Do not forget the dreams game was tossed out 2020 but 3 years later support was pulled
https://www.digitaltrends.c...

All in all this is another failure at sony on a long long list in the past 10 years

Inverno3d ago

It's kind of hard to disagree when SONY has a history of abandoning many of their IPs. They killed Mod Nation and turnt it into LBP Karting because of brand recognition but left it to die too. They made their own Smash Bros only to rush the studio, and turn the game into an advert for recent release at the time and still let it die. They shut down PS Home for more or less the same reason, they left it to rott till it became too broken and exploited to bother fixing.

just_looken2d ago

This right here

Playstation home is what facebook is trying to make now but in vr that metaverse deal

Imagine if sony kept up ps home development

The death of playstation forums was also a huge loss

Demetrius2d ago

When they refused a days gone sequel and no acknowledgement of a infamous series remaster of those gems, I knew Sony slick abandons stuff, sure they still release good games but to an extent smh

u-bEttA-rUn3d ago

Their games were unable to attract the masses every game that came out the attachment grew smaller and smaller they advertise LBP for years the industry changed and then came fortnight... You want Sony to continue to support them which cost them money that they're not getting back from the studio.

DOMination-2d ago

Honestly, I think a well-designed LBP-style game would do better than ever in the current state of the industry.

People have short attention spans. Having something that is pick up, play a few levels and put down again is the experience the "masses" are after.

Keep it as a 2D platformer only with well-designed base levels, make it easy to build new levels and more importantly easy to access new content - personally I always found the way Forze Horizon 4&5 provide daily, weekly and monthly challenges via new content that they've built or handpicked from the community is a system that works great - and then stick it on mobile and PC with Steam Deck support.

Make it F2P with a one-off fee for the level editor (to stop people spamming crap onto the store) and have MTX for more characters, outfits etc. and there you have a live service game that Sony should be all over.

Do the same with a new Karting game and a 2D fighting/Smash Bros style engine and you have three bangers right there.

(I appreciate the N4G community will hate the idea of LBP being a live service game with MTX and I get that but I think if there's one game this model could work well for, it's this.. just imo)

anast2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

Astro's is similar.

Not enough people cared to play it, so they cut it.

Sony has never been a kid friendly console. This should be obvious. People go to Nintendo for this stuff.

DarkZane2d ago

All signs actually point to a new Astrobot game coming to PS5, so you'd be wrong.

anast2d ago

It's the game that came with the PS5

StoneTitan2d ago

Its on media molecule though. They did not want to continue LBP. Sony accepted that.
Sumo continued it. With a solala lbp3 and a great sackboy though.
Its not sonys fault. They dont want to force a studio to create a new LBP game.
But I would love a revival.

romulus232d ago

For some people Sony can do no right either. You can play Sackboy A Big Adventure on PS5. So there is "a game like this" on PS5.

anast2d ago

They don't want to hear all that stuff.

Tacoboto3d ago

I feel bad for Media Molecule. For the ideas they have it seems they need a publisher that supports games like this and Dreams especially for as many players as possible.

DOMination-2d ago

Sony in the Andrew House era did support them massively though. They let them do their thing with LBP and spent millions marketing it. I remember one E3 they even used LBP to cover the boring parts of the presentation where they talk about sales figures etc.

And then they allowed MM to announce their game on the PS4 console announcement/showcase event and waited the entire generation for them to release it.

Master Chief Became More Than A Machine In 343's Halo

In Halo 4, 5, and Infinite, Master Chief became a more nuanced, human character.

In spite of the Halo series’ struggles, 343 deserves praise for adding nuance and characterisation to the ever-beating heart of Halo - The Master Chief. Playing through Infinite, it's abundantly clear that the events of the current and previous trilogies have irrevocably changed the iconic hero. He’s no longer the ‘blank slate’ that was previously presented by Bungie. He’s a fatigued, damaged and fallible protagonist, and one who is meandering through currents of grief, while reveling in his newfound agency. Giving the Chief a compelling and meaningful voice was no small feat, and 343 should be proud of that victory.

This article completely misses part of the appeal of the original iteration of character in the original game trilogy. It was the Chief and Cortana vs an entire alien collective. The blank slate Bungie displayed in their games was genius, he was an mysterious hero a wide audience could identify with because he wasn't as clearly defined as most characters.

The books added a lot of lore and backstory but most Halo players just want a fun game with exposition that doesn't get in the way of gameplay, it's why the Cortana level in Halo 3 was derided.

Not every character has to be a damaged soyboy, a soldier has to suck it up and do his duty.

BandarHub404d ago

A lot of people give the 343 version of Master Chief a lot of slack.
But Fundamentally he is still the same character, he just has a couple more dialogues. He has not changed in terms of attitude.
"Not every character has to be a damaged soyboy, a soldier has to suck it up and do his duty."
And that's what he has done at the end of the day, he did his duty. Watch his partner die, and was ready to destroy the weapon in Halo infinite....he is still the same soilder that everyone remembers

Halo Infintes one was a nice balance between both.

slate91404d ago

Chief and the halo franchise became a joke under 343

Sciurus_vulgaris404d ago

The 343i Master Chief has is based on the books. However, in Halo 4-Infinite, the Master Chief overtime become. gradually becomes more willing to show some emotion.

Obscure_Observer404d ago

"However, in Halo 4-Infinite, the Master Chief overtime become. gradually becomes more willing to show some emotion."

Which is awesome! I love how Master Chief become more John and less soldier.
