The Last of Us PS4's character models 'on par' with PS3 cutscene models

The higher resolution character models featured in the PlayStation 4 remaster of The Last of Us will be "on par" with those featured in the PS3 version's cutscenes, creative director Neil Druckmann has told EDGE.

They should call it the Definitive version already.

GarrusVakarian3634d ago (Edited 3634d ago )

That's great. The character models in the cutscenes were absolutely amazing, sometimes i would get distracted by them due to how great they were (Dat camp fire scene with David). Awesome to know the in-game character models will look as good as those.

I just traded in my copy of the PS3 version to put towards the PS4 version. Can't wait to go through the campaign again.

XtraTrstrL3634d ago

I got lucky, I got my PS3 copy just a few months ago from newegg, and it was so late in the mail that I got a refund from them for it being lost in mail. Then it arrived like the next day after they issued my refund. So, I basically got LOU for free on PS3. I was only halfway through when I heard about a PS4 version, and I haven't played it since, I wanna finish it on PS4.

Meltic3634d ago

yeah if the ps3 Power can do that. Then ps4 need too do better. Infamous looked good but the character models here and infamous looked almost the same... not gameplay but cutscenes

randomass1713632d ago

Sure enough, those cutscenes were practically CGI quality. Part of why I wanted a 24fps mode was because of how smooth they looked.

"Our cinematics are now running at 1080p and 60fps, and that involved rendering them all from scratch," he continued. "It's interesting that now [instead of a technical bottleneck], the bottleneck is 'Can we fit all this on the disc?'"

Now this is what I'm talking about! I can't wait!!!

randomass1713632d ago

Anyone whoever said that remakes and remasters don't take effort don't know what they're talking about.

rhcpfan3634d ago

I'm really looking forward to this.

"It's interesting that now [instead of a technical bottleneck], the bottleneck is 'Can we fit all this on the disc?'"

He's joking right?

Crazyglues3634d ago (Edited 3634d ago )

Actually no, he's not joking...

You see when you take an image of a character, and let's say it's 172k and you up the detail, that character becomes 500k to 1.4 easy, depending on how detailed you made it.

So now remember Last of Us was 26GB and a pretty big game, there are a lot of cut-scenes, so if you go back and increases the size of every cut scene by redoing the entire cut scene with much higher detail on all characters and in-game you can easily start to run into a space problem, so 172k to 500k could increase size from 26 to 41GB

And Games on PS4 are still only 50GB max.. So more then enough room right, well remember this is also coming with all the DLC content on one disc..

Now you may indeed be getting real close to that 50GB. DLC was about 2-3GB, now increase it to 4 to 6GB - and you start to see how it could get close to the 50GB.

-But I think they will be fine, I think they will be able to squeeze it all in.

I thought PS4 bluray disk capacity was 100Gb....where did I read that

Minute Man 7213634d ago

But the ps4 can read 100 GB disc

BadlyPackedKeebab3634d ago

Sorry but...

Firstly often cut scenes are actually just video so only the res and frame rate of that video will make a difference to file size.

If in this instance the scenes are generated "in engine" on the fly you are only talking about a bump in size of the original data for the model, texture etc. That data isn't repeated for every frame of every scene.

Give_me_head_strong3634d ago

I know you were just making examples there, but 500k polys per character? That seems pretty optimistic, lol.

Crazyglues3634d ago (Edited 3634d ago )

@ BadlyPackedKeebab -very good point, In the article he is talking about increasing the detail to match the cut-scenes..

I realized that the way I said that It sounds like i'm saying the cut-scene is taking up space - what I meant is if the game - in-game detail has been stepped up to cut-scene levels you can now see how you can run into a space problem. as a 172k character jumps to 500k or 1.4 and then the environment now needs more space adding size. Maybe not that much but more none the less.

Also I believe the PS4 uses uncompressed audio which uses less CPU power but eats up disc space.

@ Conzul

Standard ones hold 50GB all PS4 games are single layer 50 GB Blu-Ray if I'm correct. Maybe that was a dual layered 100GB but as far as I know, no games are released on a dual layer 100GB disc.

@ Give_me_head_strong

yes I was just making an example, I have no idea what the poly-count will be, just thought it would be really high if your going to hit the cut scenes fidelity in-game probably be more like 250, but who knows they were saying Uncharted four was trying to do a Million polys per character, which seems crazy insane, so who knows.. source - http://www.officialplaystat...

LordMaim3634d ago

Blu-ray discs have 25GB per layer, so the current discs are dual layer discs already. They have created experimental versions that have had upwards of 10 layers, but not without custom drives to be able to read them.

Crazyglues3634d ago (Edited 3634d ago )

@ Lord Maim

oh ok good to know, yeah just looked it up on the blu-ray site, the 25 is single layer

and 50GB is the dual layer. -so I guess there is no chance/ or highly unlikely that we will see a 100 GB disc since it's already a dual layer at 50GB.

kingPoS3634d ago

I wonder if Sony gave the PS4 the capability to read BDXL formatted discs? It would mean for a serious advantage if true. Even a double layer disc would be more than 50gb if they went that route.

cyclindk3634d ago

I preordered the online version... now hearing all these data sizes... I hope it downloads prior to release or something.

hkgamer3633d ago

cutscenes were videos. not sure what res though but i am presuming it was 1080p. So not going to have any differences there.

TheDarpaChief3633d ago

If thats the case just include the season pass on ps4 for free no?

plaZeHD3633d ago

Here's an easy fix. Why not make all the DLC content downloadable?

Crazyglues3633d ago (Edited 3633d ago )

@ plaZeHD

That's a great option.. Just one problem, and I know it's hard to believe but a lot of people don't have fast Internet, (10 to 15mps down or higher) (we who do have great connection 30 or higher forget it's not like that all over the place) so having all the content on the disc is a big plus...

So while those with slower connection (5 to 7mps down) can play online fine, downloading could take those people days, no one want's to download for days, that would be crazy. So that's why they try to squeeze it all on the disc.

I was always wishing the cut scene and in-game character models would look alike. Now my wish has come true.

ceedubya93634d ago

didn't play this on PS3. Glad I waited. Still hoping for a current gen Dark Souls 2

frostypants3633d ago

Buy the PC version or wait for Project Beast on PS4 (which looks a lot like a Demon's Souls followup).

LackTrue4K3633d ago

this could be off topic, but

now that you bring it up (Demon Souls)
what happen to that Capcon game, that looked like Demon Souls.

...."can't recall its name right now"

ShoryuSwordsman3633d ago

@onyoursistersback

you're thinking of deep down, and its still in development for ps4. open beta coming this summer. Keep in mind though, the game still hasn't been confirmed for a western release.

The Last Of Us Series Has Remarkable Potential For Spin-Offs

Najam from eXputer writes "It's time fore a new installment in the series, not another pointless remaster."

anast77d ago

They are working on something new. Not to be rude but it is impossibility stupid to think ND next major announcement is going to be a remaster or their next Last of Us entry is going to be another remaster.

AlterRecs74d ago

I think this is in response to them releasing a remaster for the sequel, a game that didn't need a remaster.

Basically a "why did you put out a remaster no one asked for when you have all there options available"

anast74d ago

They remaster is to put out something quick while they are deving new stuff. I don't get how people can be so static.

AlterRecs73d ago

There's no news about a third game being in production, you're just assuming that they're working on something that they aren't

anast73d ago

When they release the news to start the hype-train, you can give me my props then.

DrDoomer77d ago

I want an alternate timeline spin-off, where part 2 never happened.

CrimsonWing6977d ago

They’ve already done Remasters of 1 and 2… what else is there to Remaster?

AlterRecs74d ago

Considering they remastered the first game twice, who knows lol

CrimsonWing6974d ago

That was a Remake. I guess they could do that to 2, but man…. They should wait a couple generations so it can look like a major upgrade.

The Last Of Us Online Devs Celebrate Their Experience With The Canceled Game

The team is sad for losing out on such a great project but celebrates its growth because of spending time on it.

Chocoburger121d ago

All they had to do was make a basic online mode like their previous games. Instead they wanted more money and choose to go live service which makes games worse in my opinion.

What a waste of time and money, what a shame.

seanpitt2377d ago

I can't wait for season 2 so they can kill Joel off in the first 2 episodes!! Then it will be just Abby and Ellies revenge plot!

Something is telling me that this won't happen though because it wouldn't make sense, oh wait

Linzoid121d ago

Not sure why they didn’t just make Factions 2. There was no need to make it a live service.

TLoU Factions was a great addition such a shame they couldn’t be bothered to remaster that for PS5 considering the crazy high price tag of the remaster of a remaster…

anast121d ago

This is something to be celebrated. This studio is smart and they get it, even factions 2 wouldn't've have been worth the time. I am surprised they didn't just remaster the first one though, but actually how popular was Factions?
