PS4 hardware sales jump 106% on InFamous: Second Son launch

The release of InFamous: Second Son has given PS4 hardware sales a big jump in the UK.

MCV has been told by a trusted retail source that sales of PS4 consoles jumped 106 per cent last week as exclusive title InFamous: Second Son debuted on Sony’s machine, jumping straight to No.1 in the process.

That’s a bigger jump than Xbox One enjoyed following the release of Titanfall – that saw sales of Microsoft’s machine jump 96 per cent.

Xb1 averages 5k per week in UK
This is just an estimated calculation.

Ps4 (20k x .106 )= 2.12 x 20= 42.4 units sold
Xb1 (5k x .96)= 4.8 x 5k = 24 units sold

Yeah so just saying 10% will not tell the real story. It may sound small but when you get all the numbers and do the calculation. It's does not seem so small does it. If my calculation is correct, ps4 sold almost 50% more units then xb1 during this time in the UK.

Personally for me the twist end to the first will forever cement it as my most memorable, infamous 2 definitely had better gameplay naturally.

As for Second Son? The character arcs were handled pretty well, there was nothing majorly shocking story wise, but the gameplay and the attention to detail in the world/overall aesthetics... breath taking. I'm still blown away anytime I use orbital drop or any of the other ultimate power moves which I wont mention to avoid spoiling it on anyone waiting to pick up their copy :)

Where the hell are they finding stock for it to jump that much? Looking at nowinstock.net, the PS4 is still pretty scarce in the UK with only a handful of bundles available. I don't doubt that there's been a spike, but imagine what that spike would be if the PS4 was readily available.

In my experience most of the big retailers tend to be sold out most of the time, but if you pop in to any self-owned lil electrical store sometimes you can be lucky to find one or two, or in one of my friends cases, while searching for a ps4, found a store (some family owned place) that had 10 left in stock, it also had about 30 xbones in stock and 8 on the floor in kiosks... for some... reason. Never thought to ask haha, prob trying to get rid of em :P

I have no doubt there's stock out there somewhere, and I know they're trickling into stores periodically. I managed to find one in Canada over a month ago and they're generally sold out everywhere, so if you get lucky you can certainly find them.

It's just that idea that it jumped up so dramatically. It's not like PS4's are sitting on store shelves and Infamous inspired people to run out and buy a console. Stock is hard to come by, so I can only assume that in order for there to be any jump, Sony must have made more units available for the Infamous launch. Otherwise I would think that sales would have been stable as they're selling out as soon as they're in stock.

Sucker Punch was founded by a couple former Microsoft employees. Sony has been paying them for exclusive content for years (money hatting). It wasn't until 2011 that Sony cut a check and bought Sucker Punch, adding them to their stable of first party developers.

As a gamer I don't really care how Sony aquired their first party studios. Off the top of my head, Polyphony is the only Sony first party that was built by Sony. Sony purchased the majority of them including Media Molecule more recently.

I never claimed to be smart. The topic is money hatting. Buying a studio and then shutting it down when the IP's don't sell doesn't sound like "building" a studio to me. Sony buys studios when they are hot and when the IP's fizzle, they get shut down and another studio is aquired.

I do understand budget. I do not understand how Sony can support PS3, PS4, PSP, Vita, PSNow, and Morpheus while the company edges closer and closer to bankruptcy every day. After the Santa Monica layoffs, Sony announced they would shut down more than half of their 31 Sony Stores in the U.S. laying off 1000 workers. http://www.forbes.com/sites... Last year they sold their World HQ's and now rent the same space. PC's are sold off, TV's is being spun off by 2015. Sony has been liquidating assets to prevent bankruptcy and preserve their stock status which is already labeled as "junk".

So yeah, I understand budget. I also feel Sony should focus what budget they have on the product that is doing very well. Their focus should be on the PS4 and it's core market. PSNow, Morpheus and sadly Vita (great piece of kit) should not be taking away from what little Sony has.

The game division is very profitable for Sony. Mobile phones are too. Sony keeps supporting Playstation because it makes them money. They may not be able to keep doing so if they kept all those sony stores open though. In a few years you will see a lean, mean sony where people like you can't comment on their financial well being every day. Better start working on new bullet points.

Sony's debt status was downgraded to junk. Investment firms use debt status to determine if a company is worth investing in. The goal behind investments is to see a return. If the companys debt ratings show little chance of a return they will not invest. Sony is having a hard time getting investors due to their losses over the last 6 years. If you can't attract investors to invest in your next big idea you need to restructure like Sony has been doing the last few years. They are selling off assets to reduce losses, not strengthen the company.

Focusing on their core markets would be a great idea. The PS4 is off to a great start and Sony needs to focus on feeding the system with more great games and content. Vita, Now and Morpheus will take away from the limited resources Sony could be using for the PS4.

Gaming lost money for the first 2 quarters of this year until the PS4 release which generated a small profit at the end of the third quarter. You are still wrong. Debt rating is NOT related to investment. It is only related to liabilities or borrowing. A "AAA" status means that the company's liquidity is solid, the business will continue in the foreseeable future and you are highly likely to get your interest and principal amount back. well there is a major difference here. Sony bought studios which make games for PS platform with good track record. Microsoft pay to buy 3rd party contents to make their platform difference from their competitors. Even to the extend of buying out games that are "supposed" to be multiplat game which end up separating the gamer groups. That is the difference. Second son is indeed a master piece. I love the Little touches sucker punch add to SS. Like the spray paint parts through out the game. The shaking of the spray can coming from the PS4 speakers on the controller really worked well. It actually made me feel like I really was holding a spray can in my hand. I also like how the PS4 touch pad worked so well in the game too.

After hearing how great the PS4 was over the last few months, I finally bought one with the inFamous Second Son release. The game is a lot of fun, a really fantastic game with top notch graphics and sound. Nice controller too.

But compared to my XBox One the PS4 seems the less interesting of the two consoles. It misses a lot of features that the XBox has. I find the voice commands excellent and prefer the home screen and layout.

Now that I own both, I can't understand all the hate towards the XBox One. Maybe my opinion will change in time, but right now I see the XBox as the better overall console. It just does more and I just enjoy the features over the frame rate, which, being honest, I can't tell with my old man eyes

2 Weeks ago with Price cut and Free titanfall in some country Xbox One was the better value. But after TitanFall release, it didnt turn out to be the game changer that "most" people were expecting. The game will sell great, I will wait for more numbers to see if it can continue to push enough hardware for Xbox One. It did an amazing Xbox One push in the first week though.
Now the reason why I think today that the PS4 is a better value is because I can expect multiplat to be better on PS4 . Also because of Sony reputation, I can trust that the exclusives will come.
Xbox One has it's value too but it relies too much on promises (cloud, kinect, dx12 which is coming holiday 2015). The potentiel for the Xbox One is there, it's just that MS haven't been able to properly show it.
You know what kind of game will get me to buy the Xbox One. Imagine a Yu Gi Oh game with full voice control:

Exactly...but for the most part I see a lot of 8.5 to 9's so that's fine with me. It's an amazing game so far and is just pure fun. It's one of those games where you just have control over the powers and how you use them, so you can really get creative with the combos and the way you want to approach a fight. Games stunning and an absolute blast, kudos to SP. I didn't care for the 1st Infamous and never played the 2nd but SS is by far the game that's going to get SP the attention they deserve. The story isn't the greatest so far (I just recently got my Neon powers), but it delivers none the less and keeps you invested. But where this game thrives is in it's gameplay, you wanna talk about a game that's just balls out fun to play...talk about Infamous Second Son. I was having a good time just terrorizing the DUP with my smoke powers, than I got a hold of the Neon powers via Fetch lol, and WOWZERZ! Such puurty lights, and its feels riveting flying up walls and disintegrating victims with your head shots.

"Told by a trusted source" what a load of BS!

When I see actual sales data as its reported here regularly, then we can comment, otherwise that source could be your mum, it could be your local store, and the sales could represent your local community, not worldwide or a country.

Not discounting Infamous SS, sure its gonna do great, just like to trust real visible data before jumping to any conclusions.

Am I the only one left confused? These sales are a great achievement for Sony and I commend them.

I just don't understand why it is that every time the XBone does any good sales numbers everyone says it's because the PS4 is sold out. If that were the case how could the sales go up by 106%?

Just thought I'd point that out. Like I said, I don't doubt these kinds of figures.

It's not a system seller for me, I really didn't care for the first InFamous and never played the second. And to be fair, I struggle getting through the campaign of most games these days.

A system seller for me will be when they show off Uncharted 4 at E3.

What happened to the (apparent) fact that PS4's are sold out? Sold out, everywhere, impossible to get, people on here were waiting weeks, driving all over the place to find one...

Now all of a sudden there is a 106% spike in hardware sales, for hardware that couldn't have possibly sold any faster.
