Xbox One UK sales spike but PS4 still in control

Microsoft’s Xbox One has been the best-selling games console for four weeks in a row, MCV understands.

The machine has benefited from a £30 price cut, while the launch of Titanfall last week caused a surge in console sales of 96 per cent.

Neonridr3686d ago

Good to see both consoles doing well.

BX813686d ago

I agree. Someone has to be in the lead, but it's good to see gaming is going to keep pushing through another gen.

3686d ago
NewMonday3686d ago

the margin is low and volume in the last 4 weeks is small, hardly makes a difference.

morganfell3686d ago

It must be short in every place except Amazon UK because once it went back into stock there it passed the X1.

Amazon UK bestsellers for the month of March to date:

Here is the current bestseller list by hour:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Bes...

SilentNegotiator3686d ago (Edited 3686d ago )

So basically, they needed a price cut and for their direct competition to have shortages to get a slight lead for a month in the UK? And they were STILL outsold worldwide?

I wouldn't say that indicates THAT healthy of competition.

mcstorm3686d ago

@SilentNegotiator nope that's not quite true. Well here im Manchester anyway most shops that sell consoles have both the xbox one and ps4 in stick. The price cut has helped but we are over charged in the uk anyway for most products.

Xbox one sales were always going to pickup the closer we got to Titanfall coming out and it should be the same for the PS4 now it has Infamous coming out.

You also need to remember the 360 has a massive install base here in the UK and games like GTA will of stopped a lot of people from jumping to the next gen consoles but now that wave has passed and the big name games are coming to the new gen consoles people will look to move to the next gen consoles.

I still think the xbox one will sell more here in the UK and USA come the end of the gen but I expect the PS4 to outsell the Xbox one everywhere else come the end of this gen.

Giul_Xainx3686d ago

I agree it is good seeing the Xbox coming back. But I still feel that mist in the air looming over the Microsoft Xbox Division.

(Echoing from the past an xbot said: UK SALES DON'T MATTER! matter! matter.... matter...)

Menech3686d ago

@morganfell

Actually the PS4 is in stock across the UK, consumers simply prefer the Xbox One like they preferred the Xbox 360 before it. In the UK everyones friend owns an Xbox thus people continue to buy Xbox consoles.

I suggest you stop with the silly "It's only because the PS4 is out of stock rubbish" it simply isn't true.

fr0sty3686d ago (Edited 3686d ago )

@neonridr

Barely managing to squeeze past the competition in only one country after the release of a flagship title and a price cut while still being outsold by a wide margin worldwide isn't exactly what I would call "doing well". It's good news, but must be kept in perspective. XBO still has a very long way to the top.

Angeljuice3686d ago (Edited 3686d ago )

@Menech

There has been a huge migration to PS4 in the UK so far. I seriously cannot see it being outsold by the XB1.

There's a clique of tv crew in London who just play FIFA against each other (between 50-100 people). All had 360's last gen, all have PS4's now. I seriously thought they'd go XB1, but once a few bought PS4's early on, the rest followed.

thorstein3686d ago

Titanfall. A system seller, certainly. You can see the bump in sales in anticipation and then the week it comes out a huge bump.

Good for them!

Parapraxis3685d ago

"Actually the PS4 is in stock across the UK"

Yeah...that's bull and you know it.

Menech3685d ago (Edited 3685d ago )

@Parapraxis

Mind linking me to someone retailers in the UK that don't have it in stock, I cannot find anyway.

http://www.game.co.uk/en/ha...

UK's biggest game retailer, do you see anything about stock shortages there?

N4g_null3685d ago

You know it is not impossible for adults to own both xbone and ps4. Kids maybe not which creates the true fanboy.

extermin8or3685d ago

@Menech yeah but if you live in the UK and buy consoles from game you a)are nuts or b) have so much money you don't care how much higher their prices are consistently than ANYWHERE else.or c) you are really desperate. I'm not surprised GAME have console stock. I know amazon uk keeps flucuating from in stock to out of stock every few days and only recently started havinf any stock at all.

morganfell3685d ago (Edited 3685d ago )

Menech,

If you don't like what I posted, why don't you call Amazon and tell them they are lying about their own sales.

The PS4 is out of stock and other than a few Argos Stores, there is only the £629.99 bundle at Zavvi...and Amazon UK where it is outselling the X1. Try harder with real facts next time.

While you are at it, try posting real sales figures instead of a what a magazine estimates.

PSX043685d ago

More selling console = more gamers community

AndrewLB3685d ago

Everyone keeps making this false claim that nobody has PS4's in stock, but as Menech proved... they're widely available in the UK.

As for the US, the PS4 is IN STOCK at 9 of the 10 closest Best Buy's near me in SoCal.

http://www.bestbuy.com/site... (if that doesn't work, search zip code 90803)

Also, both Fry's Electronics near me (Fountain Valley and Anaheim) have PS4 in stock.

http://shop2.frys.com/wf;js...

Most Walmart stores near me also have it.

ALL my local GameStop stores have PS4 in stock, http://www.gamestop.com/bro...

80% of my local Target stores have them as well.

Newegg also has them, so does Sears,

That being the case, can anyone explain why PS4 sales haven't skyrocketed because as we all know according to all the fanboys on this site... they keep claiming that PS4 sales are low due to shortages.

The above stores I listed have had PS4's in stock since a week ago.

yeah, tight competition ensures both to give their all.

Gamer19823686d ago

PS4 still sold out though, combined with price drop of the xbox actually lower than ps4 here in certain places it was obvious.

DeathOfTheFanBoy3686d ago

I know (physically know, as in real life friends) many more people with XB1 compared to ps4.

I live in the UK.

I believe, all fanboydom set aside, we will see similar sales figures from both companies in closing this new generation.... pretty much similar to last gen, both consoles have great things to offer and people like me want to experience the best of both worlds.

incendy353686d ago

Same here in the USA, could be due to people buying PS4 for resale. Amazon resale of PS4 is very high.

DARK WITNESS3686d ago

if you have always been around xbox fans then chances are you will know more people with xbox's compared to ps4. Most people just don't like to shift once they are use to something.

Most of my friends that were xbox fans last gen are still xbox fans, but I do have a few that have actually switched to ps4. I also have some friends that got the xbox1 but after getting hands on with the ps4 they have openly said they think the ps4 is the better machine and they regret buying the xb1.

On the flip side, I don't know anyone who use to be a ps fan that has switched over to being an xb1 fan this new gen.

Last gen I owned both systems but the xb360 was my preferred console and 90% of my games I played on the 360.

This gen I have got both systems but now the ps4 is my preferred console to the point that I wish I had not rushed out and bought a launch xb1.

I know there will be great games on both systems so in the end it don't matter but thats been my observation.

Brazz3686d ago

@DARK WITNESS

I'm whit you man, i hvelike 3-4 friends from Xbox that make to the PS side, but hell, i don't ahve any friend that made to X-1 side from playstation.

I have to say, right now X-1 have the game that is more apeling for me (name it Titanfall...), but... hell! I realy can't see Sony in short of great games in next 12 months! they catched X360 and now they are in the lead, sony sure is better in games than microsoft.

ragincajun773686d ago

No offense man, but you do understand that this means nothing. Friends typically get the same console so they can all play together online.

S_C3686d ago

I also live in the UK and went to trade my ps3 and 360 in this week, and i asked the owner (independant store) how the sales have been on the xbox one and his word were they have sold 50 PS4's to 5 Xbox Ones, looks like sony and microsoft have different strongholds throughout the uk

Copen3686d ago

@incendy35 Just go look at your local Craigslist or ANY Craigslist cities globally and look at how many people are dumping their X1's or trying to trade their X1's for PS4's and that says more than what you're saying. Even on Craigslist more people and i mean by a wide margin are selling or trading their X1's more than they are their PS4's and even second hand PS4's are selling above retail so that paints a pretty good picture of where things are and where they're headed.

hkgamer3686d ago

opposite for me.

Alot of people I knew back then had a PS3.

Now skip forward to present day. Most people still play on their PS3 or not game at all (excluding mobile). But for the people that bought next gen, every singl one of them bought a PS4.

AndrewLB3685d ago

incendy35- That is absolutely not true. I just checked stock for PS4's at Southern California Best Buy, Walmart, Target, Gamestop, and Sears and ALL OF THEM are stocked with PS4's.

Its not that hard to outsell something thats rare to find in stock!

Alsybub3686d ago (Edited 3686d ago )

You do realise that if something is rare to find in stock it means all units are selling through, right?

That should mean it's outselling the competition as it has been up until now.

Unless Sony's supply has suddenly reduced drastically. Then again you'd see PS4 sales numbers dropping off a cliff if that were the case.

Reefskye3686d ago

I worked in a major UK retailer up until recently.. PS4 has been in short supply constantly from release, Xbox we have 40-50 units at any one time.

Was my last day today and was only 2 PS4s in stock in warehouse, all xboxs are on display behind cash desk

OCEANGROWNKUSH3686d ago (Edited 3686d ago )

@alsybub

XB1 units have been collecting dust on shelves since xmas... they are selling now because of titanfall, but thats going to taper off.

Fact is all the available ps4 units are selling, but xb1 has had more units TO sell, because they have been sitting on shelves... XB1 might be selling more but they arent selling out its stock, playstation is.

I always ask every time im in a store, i almost never get a yes that ps4 is in stock but theres plenty of xb1's nobodies buying.

Selective stats only tell part of the story...

AndrewLB3685d ago

Like I already said, all my local Best Buy's have them IN STORE, as does walmart, target, sears,Fry's and Gamestop.

ALL OF THEM ARE "IN-STock" except two I believe ee

I mean, I am not trying to be a pessimist but this isn't the first time someone has said this. About a month ago someone said the exact same thing, then official numbers were released and proved the that person wrong.

I'll wait for official numbers.

3-4-53686d ago

UK's always been a pretty big market for Xbox so I'd assume it would sell pretty well their on a consistent basis.

ramiuk13686d ago

in live manchester and nobody i know now has or has kept there xbone.
few early adaopters have sold on and gone ps4,most went ps4 in 1st place because of Trust in MS mainly.

The silly thing is when people buy the other console as the one they want isnt in stock, never understood it.

either way as long as both camps enjoy there buy its good news

hkgamer3686d ago

@ramiuk1

some people just want to buy a new console. They both basically the same.

Christopher3686d ago

And all it took was a huge price slash and free games.

Alsybub3686d ago

Which is what everyone was saying they should do. I'm sure everyone will still say it's an over priced piece of crap at any price.

xx4xx3686d ago

Kinda reminds ya of the PS3....don't it?

Christopher3685d ago

@xx4xx: Almost. The PS3 got more of its price slash from cutting down the hardware and repackaging it. This is a bit more desperate, but definitely akin to what Sony went through last generation.

The difference here is Sony didn't give away free games to do this and they didn't price the PS3 below their profit margin. They just took longer to make up for the R&D.

MidnytRain3685d ago

But cgoodno, Sony gives away free games all the time via PS+!

And glad Microsoft is doing well now all the problems stem way back when they were going to do the always online console scared people off till now glad to see both consoles doing so well.

Copen3686d ago

Not hard to do when you give away your biggest exclusive of the year and drop the price while your competition is supply constrained. MS may have sold some and i say some because IF it was a huge amount you can be damn sure the numbers would be touted which they're not. On top of that MS is taking a loss on every unit sold at a discount and a free game they're paying EA for and giving away. The sales haven't been significant enough to update the LTD numbers which is why they haven't so it suggests they're still not closing the gap despite Sony having supply problems which you can bet is concerning to MS. If they can't close the gap now with no supply issues price drops and free pack in games how can one realistically believe they ever will?

Retroman3686d ago (Edited 3686d ago )

im sure it was easy that the editor found x1 out selling ps4 in UK article now that ps4 OUT of stock EVERYWHERE.
lets see how many articles they find after Sony re-stock ps4's that x1's out sold ps4 again. let oct-dec war begin.

@ Copen
MS cant close the gap as Sony in a (SHORTAGE stage for now) even with Titanfall as they like simple fact no one want a X1 . what will MS do when Titanfall 2 come out exclusive on ps4 end of 2015 MS compete with another Halo really?? MS is that all you got.

I had to rub my eyes to make sure I was reading that, right. I guess its down to titanfall and PS4 shortages, right?

Ezz20133686d ago

the answer in the article :

*The console is reported to have benefited from PlayStation 4's hardware shortages and Microsoft's official £30 price cut, which came into effect three weeks ago. The launch of Titanfall has helped as well, with Xbox One sales rising 96 per cent during the game's launch week"*

ProjectVulcan3686d ago (Edited 3686d ago )

There have been huge price slashes for some places as well.

Gamestop had the Titanfall bundle for £369.99 for quite long periods with a lot of stock. Ebuyer offers it at £375, Argos now has a deal where you get Titanfall and Thief for £399.99. Shop play have the basic machine for £349.99. This is 80 pounds slashed off the price only a month ago! Asda, Zavvi, Dabs, Maplin etc all with various deals that cut money off or bundle. You can barely move for all the deals.

LOTS and LOTS of deals and incentives around then to shift these consoles.

Price cut, offers and bundles with 'free' games are why Xbox One has moved better.

I wouldn't quite judge this as some sort of permanent shift in the fortunes of the consoles just yet. A large peak of Xbox One sales most likely just edging out PS4 sales which has had no special offers or significant new game releases.

Gamer19823686d ago

@vulcanproject EXACTLY the console is cheaper than the ps4 when you can actually get the ps4 as when ppl actually get hold of the ps4 its usually in bundle form meaning they have to buy games with it at full price.. So a PS4 with 2 games is like £450 and an Xbox is £420. When stock shortages end the PS4 bundles will become better and sales will drop for MS again..

ProjectVulcan3686d ago (Edited 3686d ago )

It depends how large the sales disparity actually is. If it isn't that big then Sony will just sit back and do nothing and let the Titanfall hype and bundling die down, then jump back on top.

After all, they have offered very few deals up until now because well, they didn't have to to shift consoles!

If retailers maintain this sort of massive price slashing and bundling for Xbox One to move stock then maybe Sony will consider some minor deals, but I imagine for the moment Sony have little incentive to.

They will know as well this is not some sort of massive shift in fortunes, just a console enjoying the probably temporary second wave buyers who dropped on an Xbox One now it is a much better deal.

It would be nice for Sony to just throw in a free game and then we'll see PS4 sales soar again, that's how the market is right now as the second wave buyers hang around in the shadows for deals.

SliceOfTruth8883686d ago

This might be the most ignorant fanboy response I have ever seen

Cacolaco3686d ago

When they slashed the price of the HP Touchpad in the US, they sold tons of them really fast.

I guess my point is that increased sales aren't always a good indicator that everything is going well. There are lots of other factors to consider.

Do I have to buy the console as part of a bundle? Are they throwing in other things to make the console more appealing?

We spend too much time looking at pure sales numbers. There are many other factors to consider. Also, it's silly. We all want both consoles to do well, whether we know it or not. Competition is a good thing.

@Bennibop Please do not be so stupid. If you wanted a PS4 then you could get one in the UK very easily. It's been this way since christmas, I have continued to post links on here showing where to get a PS4 in the UK for months but it falls on deaf ears because fanboys want to think that it's out of stock everywhere.

There is obviously more stock of Xbox Ones about but getting a PS4 over here isn't difficult and would not effect sales. I got mine in January from Argos and there was 10+ in stock in the store I went to.

TheTowelBoy3686d ago

In the USA and U.K xbone is tied or out selling Supply Low PS4 by the smallest of margins. The PS4 is still out selling xbone 2 to 1 worldwide by 60000 units according toVgchartz hardware sells. But congratulations on selling 2000 more units Than THE PS4 In the USA And U.K.

I'm sorry I agree with NightmareLuffy. I'm not saying price cut but PS4 should give something for free like a game or at least 6 months of free PSN+. Always match our competitors. I hope Sony focus on their multiplayer exclusives games that's why the USA and U.K buy xbox brand because of Microsoft focus on online multiplayer gaming. Nope more x box 360 users are beginning to move over to x box 1. I have over 30 friends on x box live on my 360 account.

Since launch of the x box 1 only four of my friendS had bought an x box 1. Last week or two i noticed 4 more bought an x box 1.

People are just moving from 360 to xb1 and obviously some neutrals have also decided they prefer a xb1 over a PS4

Majiebeast@ Get over yourself 360 users own an x box for a reason they like the system. People on 360 are moving over if you don't believe thats up to you. But i am just stating the obvious. Its got nothing to do with PS4 shortages honestly get over it.

bx81@ exactly lot of people haven't yet. But the spike in x box sales is likely due to the price drop and titanfall. Some x box 360 users have decided the time is right now to come over to x box 1. On a different note, I have noticed MS have really pushed their marketing recently in the big UK stores, Asda and Tesco both advertising the hell out of the Xbox One and not a mention of the PS4. MS must be pumping a great deal of money into this promoting.

Gamer19823686d ago

To some degree you are right on both counts, Amazon is already out of infamous packs and the other packs are on backorder. Though it can't be overlooked that MS has a solid install base in the UK combine that with a price cut and a game that captures the imagination.

It won't be till may IMO that we will be able to tell if this is the begining of a positive trend for MS or just a blip.

SniperControl3686d ago

The US and UK, were the only two regions that were rock solid for the 360, the others Sony dominated in.

Besides, these figures are down to stock shortages, Sony just cant make enough of the damn suckers to feed global demand, they have already forecast shortages well into the summer.

Be interesting to see the Second Son bundle sales next month.

THC CELL3686d ago

Ps4 shortage is the main reason, got plenty of xbox one bundles with titanfalls if u want one in my game shop, come on down btw we just sold out of infamous ss today next batch monday

Jdoki3686d ago

GAME was also doing a deal for a while where you could trade a PS3 or 360 plus any five disc games and get an XB1 for £299 with FIFA 14. You just had to show the email where GAME sent with the offer - it wasn't advertised in stores, so not sure how much impact it would have had.

That was a pretty cheap deal, I was almost tempted. but as I still play PS3 a lot, and no longer own a 360 I didn't want to take advantage of it.

ocelot073686d ago

I believe so. I know a few stores in my city got a big batch of PS4 consoles today (mostly infamous bundle). All last week most sites like GAME where out of stock and my friend gave up searching and bought a COD bundle he did not want.

A price cut or free game does help! It might get early adopters angry but it can drive further sales. There are still ppl holding back and wait for a good price cut. Sony should not rely on their success. If they want to win this clearly they should consider a price cut or a free game as well. There is nothing wrong to make it harder for the competition. If they can't release more exclusives sooner, they need to find a different way to convince those who haven't chosen a system yet.

gamer11383686d ago

Given that Sony are considering a very competitive price for Project Morpheus despite the 5 years of R&D costs, I'm not sure they have the capital to take a hit on a price cut. The irony is the PS4 already has a price cut in a way; it's original price! No one expected them to come in that low and its worked out really well for them so far. Over 6 million people have proved they are happy to pay the original price.

Of course if you look to Canada, they've seen a price INCREASE. Down to the Canadian dollar apparently.

stuna13686d ago

Sony has nearly 2 million reasons why a price cut isn't necessary!

kneon3686d ago

As long a Sony continue to sell every unit they can make then a price cut would just be stupid.

Nodoze3686d ago

You don't cut price on something that you cannot keep in stock. Comparatively you DO cut the price and offer buying incentives for things that are not selling and are filling up the isles.

tigertron3686d ago (Edited 3686d ago )

Two reasons:

1. There are more Xbox Ones in stock then there are PS4s. PS4s are still in short supply due to large demand.
2. Titanfall.
3. Slight price cut.

You've just said the exact thing everyone above you has just said, just worded slightly different

tigertron3686d ago

It doesn't hurt to reiterate. ;)

"Two reasons". States 3.

tigertron3686d ago

Adds new reason, forgets to alter the word 'two' to 'three'.

...or maybe there is only one real, true reason why this happend.

Stay with me...cuz it's about to get real complicated....now try to follow along....here it comes:

Maybe some people actually wanted to buy the XBox One.

I know, i know...it might not make much sense...i mean why would you want an XBox One when there's the mighty PS4 and Killzone in all of it's 1080p 60fps glory....oh wait, forget i said that last part about Killzone.

Bwa-Hahahahaha!!!!

Bethesda Needs to Reduce the Gaps Between New Fallout and Elder Scrolls Releases

Waiting a decade for new instalments in franchises as massive as Fallout and Elder Scrolls feels like a waste.

Microsoft have Obsidian but I feel it's Bethesda who just don't want to play ball as they've always said they want to do it themselves.

Once MS bought Zenimax in 2020 they should have put the Outer Worlds 2 on the back burner, allow Bethesda to finish off its own Space RPG with Starfield (despite totally different tone why have two in your first party portfolio with two developers who's gameplay is a tad similar) and got Obsidian for one of their projects to make a spiritual successor to New Vegas.

When the Elder Scrolls VI is finished Bethesda can then onto the main numbered Fallout 5 themselves.

The Outer Worlds 2 started development in 2019 so putting it on the back burner wouldn't have been the end of the world, they'd have always come back to it once Fallout was done and it would have been nicely spaced out from Starfields release once they had most likely stopped supporting it and all the expansions were released.

If they did this back in 2020 when they bought Zenimax and the game had a good, steady 4 - 5 years development, you might have seen it release in 2025.

We are literally going to be waiting until 2030 at the very earliest for Fallout 5 and all they seem bothered about is pushing Fallout 76.

Its not just only Todd not playing ball.
Obsidian have made a name for themselves in delivering stellar RPGs, but most famous once have always been sequels/spin-offs to borrowed IPs like KOTOR 2, Neverwinter Nights 2, Fallout: New Vegas, Stick of Truth etc.
Obsidian wants to invest more in their own original IPs like Outer Worlds or Pillars of Eternity with Avowed.
Similar to what Bluepoint & inXile wants to do or Kojima is doing (i.e not involving anymore in Konami's IPs).
So yea, even if New Vegas has the most votes from 3D Fallout fans, Obsidian just wants to do their own thing, like any aspiring dev studio and MS is likely currently respecting that.
But a future Fallout game from Obsidian will surely happen. Founder Feargus Urquhart has already stated an year ago that they're eager to make a new Fallout game with Bethesda, New Vegas 2 or otherwise. Urquhart was the director of the very first 1995's Fallout game after all.
And don't forget Brian Fargo and his studio inXile, as Brian Fargo was the director of Fallout's 1988 predecessor: Wasteland

Obsidian should take over the FO IP. They're do far better with it than Bethesda who hasn't made a great game for almost 15 years

I disagree. Part of these games is the support for the mod community. If they move to releasing a "next game" every 2 or 3 years, the modding support plummets and the franchises turn into just another run of the mill RPG.

Make the games good enough to withstand the test of time, to keep people coming back to them and expanding on them with mod support.

Athenian Rhapsody Throws WarioWare into a JRPG

Athenian Rhapsody is a JRPG with a difference: alongside turn-based combat & exploration, you'll need to complete WarioWare-style microgames.

Still have my ps3 copies. Bought it at launch and another one when I found it cheap and in perfect condition about 10 years ago. I wouldn’t buy it on Switch but if they made a PS5 version I would. I still have one of my PS3 Fats hooked up so good to go either way.

darthv721h ago

Id play it again on the switch. I wished my 360 version was bc but this is still a good way to play.
