Report: EA secures rights to Titanfall 2

Electronic Arts has secured sequel rights for Respawn Entertainment's multiplayer shooter Titanfall, a reputable source has informed GameSpot.

The option to land Titanfall 2 was based on the performance of the original, our source said. Official sales data is not available, but from what we're hearing, Titanfall has performed well and even helped boost Xbox One sales. We already know that's true in the UK.

We've reached out to Electronic Arts for comment, but have not heard back at press time.

Oh I always thought they had it for the future sequels never knew it was based on how it performance.

I wonder when the sequel will arrive.

Preparing for Titanfall 2 for PS4/Xbone

hankmoody3681d ago

Another perfect example of the double standards here at N4G. Trash the game because it's not on your system and then get all excited when the possibility of that same game or a sequel showing up on your system raises its head. Sort of reminds me of Gollum talking to himself.

SnakeCQC3681d ago

@ hankmoody The game had many major flaws but had alot of potential. Hopefully respawn will take the criticism on board and make an excellent sequel.

Infamous2983681d ago (Edited 3681d ago )

@hankmoody another perfect example of generalizations in n4g smh.

Eonjay3681d ago (Edited 3681d ago )

I threw up in my mouth a little bit when I read the title.

Edit: I was actually hoping that the game would sell better. it would have meant that Respawn would have earned enough money to go at it alone and truly be independent. This makes me sad :( I wonder how much of Respawn's work EA was able to siphon and pocket?

morganfell3681d ago

Well Infamous he says he doesn't trash other systems but he spends countless posts, and I checked, trashing Sony supporters that are no more vehement in their support of Sony products than he is of MS products.

There's the real Gollum of which he spoke. Pot, meet kettle.

The fact he says he bought a PS3 means nothing in light of his numerous comments.

gazgriff2k123681d ago

report' titanfall 2 coming to ps4 with vr and move support BOOM!

scott1823681d ago

Nice, it is pretty fun.

raWfodog3681d ago

@ hankmoody

I don't recall XiSasukeUchiha ever badmouthing the game (quick check through his comment history). Are you making general statements or replying directly to XiSasukeUchiha?

Neonridr3681d ago

@Eonjay - Respawn is a developer. They would have had to partner with someone for the publishing of the game regardless (in this case EA).

No studios outside of a first party self publish their titles.

SilentNegotiator3681d ago (Edited 3681d ago )

@hank

Where did he say that he was going to PLAY it? He just said that he is prepared to see it be on on PS4.

And besides, all you're doing is generalizing to shift your disappointment away from the likely lost exclusivity to calling out fanboys (even if you have to respond to one that isn't there..."reminds me of Gollum talking to himself" if you ask me).

TGF_Zero3681d ago

Your such a ps fanboy lol I saw you always commenting PS articles lol

Eonjay3681d ago

@Neonridr

Its called self publishing, and even if they didn't want to do that, I would rather them have a publisher of better quality.

corvusmd3681d ago (Edited 3681d ago )

...but it won't sell on PS4. All Sony gamers think it over-rated and just "cod with mechs". :/ That would be a horrible waste of money. Plus Sony would seriously have to upgrade their network to make this TF2 possible. Not unheard of, but right now they don't have the network structure.

That being said, I can't wait for TF2, because TF is a ton of fun. It'd also be interesting to see the next game include the VR aspect (esp since the AR design MS patented a year ago seemed awesome then). Nevertheless, it's good to see that TF has lived up to the hype and is getting the praise it deserves.

@Spring Maybe not everyone that doesn't like the game is a fanboy...but when they don't like it, yet visit articles about it, and do nothing but stay negative...yeah then they are just a bitter fanboy.

SpringHeeledJack3681d ago

@hankmoody

So according to you the game must be good and anybody who doesn't like it is afanboy.

Maybe the game just is that good and was very overhyped. Even angry joe who only games on xbox and PC gave it a 7 and said it's way over hyped. Is he now a fanboy?

morganfell3681d ago

@raWfodog,

He is just in a general state of distress like many X1 supporters, XGamer comes to mind, who were sure this game was not going anywhere.

But this title hasn't driven X1 sales like they hoped.

They just delayed the Xbox version to April 8th. They stated it was to polish the game but the speculation is that they are trying to drive more sales of the X1 through the end of March. The 360 version of the game should have been in reproduction and shipping already and they are announcing a delay this late? Must be a heck of a day one patch. Two weeks really doesn't bring very much polish so it smells like sales tactics.

Also the article says it helped drive X1 sales in the UK. But in the UK, the PS4 was still sold out most of the month and the X1 was given a price break.

What happened? Not sure, but the PS4 just came back into stock a few days ago. At Amazon UK, here are the cumulative sales to date for March. See for yourself who managed to get the most consoles out the door, the console with the price break and heavily advertised exclusive or another manufacturer.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/...

Does this mean anything? I do not know. Maybe these sales are not indicative of the standard purchasing demographic.

imt5583681d ago

There is now way for polishing game just in 2 weeks BEFORE LAUNCH!!!! That's bullshit. About 3 weeks before launch game must go in production.

Brix903680d ago

@corvusmd

You realize that N4G accounts for probably 1% of the Sony community. I know plenty of Sony gamers that like this game so I guess your saying 1% is all. They got plenty of time to figure out infrastructure of the online by the time the sequel comes out.

Docknoss3680d ago

Seems like allot of people want to play TF that don't have the right console.

WickedLester3680d ago

Please please use the Frostbyte 3 engine for Titanfall 2 instead of the Source engine!!!

DaGR8JIBRALTAR3680d ago

half-ass yearly releases too...

Copen3680d ago (Edited 3680d ago )

@hankmoody You see double standards and i see Titanfall being shackled to a crippled Xbox One and x360. The FACT is the next Titanfall game will look and play better on the better console that being the PS4. But with your logic you're perfectly happy with the ugly game as long as it's on YOUR console of choice. Even from someone like me who has both consoles (bought second hand for 400 phuck the 500 price tag) i would assuredly buy the PS4 version over the X1 version to play the best version possible. If Titanfall can be it's best on one console what does it matter if it's on the PS4? You're mad about the mere possibility of it coming to the PS4 when what you should be mad at is the overpriced Xbox One hardware holding the IP on consoles back and MS buying exclusive 3rd party titles because they refuse to put meaningful resources toward proper 1st party games. I've got an Xbox One for my own reasons but anyone with any sense should want the best possible experience with any game they buy to play and even if that experience is on a competitor's console who gives a $h!t? People like you are a cancer to the gaming community fueling the console war bull$h!t for your own agenda when what you should be hoping for is for the success of the IP and keeping it as relevant as possible EVEN if it's not on your platform of choice. Stop the console warrior stuff it's negative and has no place of value to the gaming community at large.

GrandTheftZamboni3680d ago (Edited 3680d ago )

@corvusmd

"Sony would seriously have to upgrade their network to make this TF2 possible"

Warhawk sold over 1 mil and it ran smooth as a butter without any lag with 32 online players. It was hosted on a rack of dedicated servers (PS3 consoles). 7 years ago. I think they could manage 6 vs 6 matches.

minimur123680d ago

I nearly had a heart attack thinking that it said MS aquires rights to Titanfall, but then I read it again and smiled :)

morganfell3680d ago

"Seems like allot of people want to play TF that don't have the right console."

It isn't about wanting to play Titanfall. It isn't my kind of game. It isn't the game that a lot of people want. Far fewer than you imagined. Did you also dream that Titanfall would make the X1 the most purchased console? Sales numbers to day say no. Not even for the month in which the game launched.

Having Titanfall on PS4 is about a broader base for Sony = more ability for Sony to craft things which do interest others such as Morpheus.

It is about removing another advantage from the company that sought to do more harm to gamers rights in a single day than all other companies in the past combined.

k3rn3ll3680d ago

Pretty sure this is just the pub rights still not ip. Respawn is part of "EA Partners" program which lets them get final ip rights. They were actually one of the last to sign on for this program

lfc_4eva3680d ago

Titanfall 2 for PS4 too?

Not if MS has anything to do with it. Money talks.

Tsar4ever013680d ago

EA was RESPONSIBLE for TitanFall NOT coming to the ps3/PS4.

If you read Respawn earliest development road map for TF. The reason they did not use their COD-MW engine and used Valve Software's "SOURCE ENGINE" to build TF was because they wanted to make sure that TF would perform at the target spec on ALL platforms, specifically the PLAYSTATION 3, because how well the Source Engine performed with Portal 2 on PS3. But Microsoft changed that with it's money, It influenced EA, and EA made the decision to have TF on XB1 & PC only.

Now they have the rights to TF2. And they have the last word on whether or not TF2 would come to PS3/PS4. which already has me worried, MS money influence EA's decision the 1st time, MS money could influence EA's decision again.

parentoftheyear3680d ago

Im going to say this. Vr titan anyone???!!!! A man can only dream.

UltimateMaster3680d ago

If EA has the rights to it.
Does it mean Titanfall 2 isn't coming to PS4?

XisThatKid3680d ago

@hankmoody
This even can be true but almost everyone thats looking forward to the sequeal already stated it was a cool game and never outwardly downed the game from the jump.

PudgeySan3680d ago

Not even EA and Sir Peter Moore can deny the power of PlayStation. Peter Moore is such and Xbone Homer haha, Sony is just making the industry and all there allegiance look like a fool this Gen.. I'm lovin it.

Zombro3680d ago

That's like 3 years away i could be dead by then soooo I'm gettin an xbox one lol

ObiWanaTokie3680d ago

Why is what hank moody said "well said"
when that is clearly trolling or a personal attack?

god damn website is goofy

abzdine3680d ago

one more yearly franchise.
i don't care i'm not interested in EA's FPSs but tells of the quality of the future episodes.
Titanfall seems very fun, but doesn't revolutionize the genre.

ravinash3680d ago

Just think about what this game will be like if they made it exclusively for the new gen of consoles. (and PC of course).

Now EA has the Ip.

2 years we should see another TF.

xHeavYx3681d ago

2 years? It's EA we are talking about. We'll probably see TF2 in at least 1 year (and maybe some spinoffs)

GSKerns3681d ago

EA doesn't own the IP, it belongs to Respawn... EA is only the publisher as part of the EA Partners Program. Similar to how Bungie owns the IP for Destiny.

AngelicIceDiamond3681d ago

@Heavy

1 year?

Respawn's not even releasing another Titan any time soon for the game let alone a half baked spin off or a full blown sequel next year.

The team is still small but growing in number rapidly.

It won't take as long as TF 1 to make but give it 2 years tops.

maniacmayhem3681d ago

I can see EA bringing this to another studio or in house dev just to annualize the title.

They may do the same with this title as Activision does with CoD.

trenso13681d ago

2 years? If thats the case for only multiplayer game this makes it even less appealing knowing that it has such a short life span for a only multiplayer game.

nukeitall3680d ago

Now that EA has the IP, it can do another deal with MS again and make it exclusive again too.

That said, it likely takes longer than 2 years to do another sequel.

Even CoD with breakneck pace of release and massive funds, requires massive amount of outside help to get the annual release and two year development cycle.

k3rn3ll3680d ago

I highly doubt this is ip rights. Mainly because the whole reason respawn left IW is because they wanted to control their product
@gskerns is right

lfc_4eva3680d ago

I agree. 2 years.

They can push out BF one year, then Titanfall the next.

They can maximise the exposure for each.

ravinash3680d ago

I'm sure that respawn would have learned the lessons after Activation and not fall into the same trap again.
So they probably hold onto the ownership rights for TF until they are ready to move on.

2-3 years. iirc they were planning on releasing cycliacally - Battlefront, TF, Battlefield

So Battlefront is up next (YES!)

"So Battlefront is up next (YES!)" - Yep can't wait :)

Really hope Dice does it justice.

hello123680d ago

Battlefront is a game i am waiting for should be Epic with frostbite engine.

raWfodog3681d ago

I think it's pretty safe to assume that TF2 will drop next year (and sequels every year after that).

rashada073681d ago

If it was at the point where multiple teams worked on the franchise then yes but at the moment there is only one team so it'll be two years at least.

"The Future of Titanfall" lls, poor Vince - how does this happen?

minimur123680d ago (Edited 3680d ago )

So do respawn still own the IP, and EA are 100% going to publish it, or am I mixed up?

EDIT:
I love how everyone is playing the 'guess how long until another titanfall is out' game

DeadlyFire3680d ago

@minimur12
Yes they do. This is just publishing rights for the title that EA has acquired. Nothing more. EA is not likely to double down on a single platform twice. I believe its just Microsoft pushing for people to say play on Xbox first.

You know Metro and Witcher also got a first game deal to put their game on Xbox first. Now both are multiplatform with releases after that with Last Light, and Witcher 3 landing on both platforms. I expect the same with Titanfall. Next game won't come until 2016. EA has Havannah(2014), Battlefront(2015), Titanfall in 2016 could happen along with a new Battlefield. As well as other games in their line up. I am pretty sure they have seen sales numbers and have high aims for the sequel with a bigger budget.

ThePope3681d ago

@eonjay

Sell better? Well since numbers haven't been released yet how do you know how well it sold? You don't, you're trolling and hoping to spread misinformation.

In fact, it obviously sold so well that EA was able to procure the sequel. Which contracts are usual written in such a way making said goal fairly lofty.

ZombieKiller3681d ago

I'll be interested when it says:

EA secures rights to Titanfall 2 on PlayStation

2cents3680d ago

I'm all for Titanfall being enjoyed by all, but if this is true then I'm not happy EA managed to get their filthy hands on the rights.

Respawn deserve to do as they wish with titanfall, considering the hell those guys went through with Activision, they have gone from the gate keepers of hell straight into the devils lair.

I wish Respawn luck with their future dealings with EA and I hope that we are treated to some awesome gaming goodness through their future endeavours.

T23680d ago

they will be forced to put out another one yearly and to rush it out annually complete with bugs... its EA proven track record not my opinion unfortunately

DeathOfTheFanBoy3680d ago

Now... The REAL question should be, how long before MS secures EA on a TF2 deal?

Cuzzo633680d ago

@ Hank moody
not everybody talked down on TF

AceBlazer133680d ago

Really disappointing how many people's opinions just flip like that. Game should stay where it started. Guess i should be happy for the ps4 guys that wanted it from the get go.

parentoftheyear3680d ago

@ifc there is no way microsoft could dish out that cash. You figure by titan fall 2 release sometime in 2015 I'm guessing there will be 10 million ps4,s. So I would say microsoft would have to write them a 200 million dollar check. Not gunna happen.

showtimefolks3680d ago

i bet respawn made sure this time around that there will be no exclusive crap to one console. REspawn entertainment were happy about EA going behind their backs to do a exclusive

diehardmetallicafan3680d ago

im still not interested in titanfall/2 even if it does come to a playstation platform. im sick of futuristic fps bullsh*t.

+ Show (12) more repliesLast reply 3680d ago
pompombrum3681d ago

Great news for PS4 gamers. If it was going to stay Microsoft exclusive, they'd probably have got Microsoft to publish future titles.

Nero13143681d ago (Edited 3681d ago )

???????? No confirmation of that

pompombrum3681d ago

Well no there is nothing official but staying with EA would give them the freedom to release on whatever platform they wanted. Seeing what EA's reputation is like at present, why wouldn't they switch to an arguably better publisher in Microsoft if they was going to stick to Xbox and PC?

Death3681d ago

EA is the one that made the deal with Microsoft to make Respawns game an Xbox exclusive. Since EA picked up the sequel, they can make another deal with Microsoft if they choose to. EA is a publisher just like Microsoft. Why would EA have Microsoft publish the sequel?

xx4xx3680d ago

I don't think people are rationally thinking before commenting.

DeadlyFire3680d ago (Edited 3680d ago )

Not likely to happen. EA wants Titanfall on level with Call of Duty/Battlefield. For that to happen they would have to fund its development on multiple platforms. Its unavoidable for EA to publish the game on multiple platforms with them in charge.

showtimefolks3680d ago

aiBreeze

and you know that how? if anything Respawn would have chosen sony if they had to because ps4 will have a much bigger install base(not saying they were gonna choose sony if not EA but if they had to choose one between ms and sony)

LoveOfTheGame3680d ago

Wow air, judging from the comments to your statement people on this site can't read worth a damn.

The award for most defensive comment goes to showtime, I think he likes Sony a little too much haha.

DJustinUNCHAIND3681d ago

I bet exclusivity will be in place for Titanfall 2 for X1.

Something greater than DLC, and something less than full exclusivity.

FITgamer3681d ago

I doubt anything more than timed DLC. Seeing as the next game probably will probably be in 2 years, the PS4's lead over Xbox One will probably be much bigger.

Dark113681d ago

I won't be so sure .. how much is MS willing to pay? the answer will decide if it's exclusive or not.

T23680d ago

@dark - well they can pay whatever they want but if by next spring ps4 has 15 million consoles in the wild, then if the game is popular

5 million attach rate X 30 bucks average for game = 150 million.

If MS spends 150 million to secure one game, that would be hilarious, terrible business model. and sony could take that same investment and make warhawk2 plus resistance 3 for the same money.... meanwhile EA will also put out another possibly better bf , and COD will likely overhaul due to poorer sales of ghosts. and this is while destiny would be pumping out DLC for a huge seller as well.
Do you really think titanfall 2 would sell enough consoles to make this worth it?

To me the more money MS throws at games like this, the more I see the FAble, forza, halo, gears, cycle repeat over and over and over. as a 360 owner, I'm done with most of those.

Kayant3681d ago (Edited 3681d ago )

"Something greater than DLC, and something less than full exclusivity" - So timed exclusive release (Unlikely), exclusive platform DLC or modes.

I doubt it personally it will either be timed DLC (COD deal) or if MS wants full exclusivity they either going to have to buy respawn or the IP from them or pay a very very large amount for the sequel because PS4 will have the bigger install base adding that to PS3's install base also that is a lot of money EA wouldn't want to miss out on again.

MS could afford it but is that a smart move for the Xbox division or their budget? Will investors like that?

Copen3680d ago

The question is would that be a smart decision for EA and their stockholders to make another deal with MS for exclusivity? Short answer is NO it wouldn't make any sense to commit to one console platform again especially when by that time i'm sure cross gen games will be nothing but a memory. So ask yourself this. Would it be a smart idea to release ONLY on X1 and pc? Or releasing on X!,PS4,pc especially when both the X1 and PS4 will have expanded customer bases with the PS4 likely outpacing the X1 as i has to this point? No it makes ZERO sense from a business perspective to lose out on profits especially when the platform you'd cut out is the leader.

jimbobbeers3680d ago

I.e released a month or two before.

Dudebro903681d ago

Sounds like Respawn has a huge hit. Congrats.

Dark113681d ago (Edited 3681d ago )

I think MS will have to pay even more now if they want titanfall 2 to be exclusive.

Respawn Entertainment is Discontinuing Sales of Original Titanfall

Sales for the original Titanfall are being discontinued.

Ethereal865d ago

Physical media. Unfortunately the way games are going these days game servers will eventually be shut down and you can stare at the menu and wish you could play the game again.

littletad865d ago

This is why reading is so important. Nothing to do with digital or physical media. The game, which is online only, is being delisted because of DDOS and other hacker attacks. The case got so bad that only six players in the world log on. For PC. Rather than fix it, they continued to sell the game, broken as it is, and only now just decided to call it quits. But please, go on thinking what you will.

Ethereal863d ago

I'm aware of the DDOS attacks and that this case is not typical. This game would eventually have it's servers shutdown regardless of the current situation so that is a moot point. My comment was in a general sense and that there are instances in which games can be preserved physically when official support ends.

Let's recap your first sentence. I said, "the way GAMES are going these days" indicating a broader stroke than just this game. I agree, reading IS important. I was simply stating the obvious downsides of the digital marketplaces and online only trends in games these days. I could even make the argument that the online only offering which has allowed hacker manipulation has impacted the preservation of this great game. My comment is valid in the general sense and thank you for your permission to continue to think what I will.
