Gabe Newell has revealed that his favorite non-Valve game is Super Mario 64. Newell, who’s known as the co-founder and managing director of Valve, previously expressed his fondness for the Nintendo 64 classic as well as its director and producer – Shigeru Miyamoto. Super Mario 64 was originally released in 1996 and a remake called Super Mario 64 DS hit the Nintendo DS in 2004.

Mario 64 is probably my favorite game of all time.

It's still better than 90% of games released since 1996.

SpiralTear3696d ago

Does this mean that he loves certain Valve games more?

SHUT THE FU** UP AND GIVE US OUR HALF LIFE 3

Daniel_Potter3695d ago

Gabe once said
"A product that is late, is late for a little while, but a product that sucks, will suck forever"
So please, shut up yourself and take your ignorance with you

Moncole3695d ago (Edited 3695d ago )

He never said that and the actual quot is "A delayed game is eventually good, a bad game is bad forever" and Shiguru Myiamoto said it. Than people bring up Duke Nukem Forever but that game was bad because it always changed develpers and Gearbox probably worked on it for about a year and the game didnt have constant develepmemt time.

Watch the whole video, for the quote

And there are a few examples of great games that took long to develop
Like Alan Wake or LA Noire

If they ever did I hope they would add onto it, there's so much you could do with Princess Peach's castle alone

roadkillers70d ago

Or just make the Mario 128... the cancelled sequel that sounded amazing (or was it just an amazing tale).

fr0sty70d ago

Funny that after all these years, we still use 64 bit CPUs, so it wouldn't make sense to call it that.

fr0sty70d ago

Yeah, a straight remake doesn't sound good to me. Same formula, but different game.

Number1TailzFan71d ago

Each level is pretty small today in the original game, I don't like huge levels but I think they could be at least 2x bigger, or close to it and more of them, with more things to do.

They could do a mix of having open levels and more linear ones like in 3D World or Land, I doubt they will do that but it would make a change.

Neonridr70d ago

I mean Odyssey's levels weren't massive, but requiring you to do different things in each world is what made the levels feel bigger than they were.

ZeekQuattro71d ago

I'd prefer a Oydessey 2 or Galaxy 3. Besides the DS
game was a Mario 64 remake complete with more playable characters, stages, bosses and muti player content.

Cacabunga70d ago (Edited 70d ago )

I did not like Odyssey i found the idea of ot lame.. i find it boring to just look for moons instead of exploring and enjoying the levels. Let’s not talk about the extremely repetitive and ridiculously easy bosses. Level design is so meh most of the time. Galaxy 2 is a far better game so Galaxy 3 anytime!!!

TiredGamer70d ago

Agreed. I enjoyed Odyssey for a while, but it quickly became very formulaic where each level felt like a checklist of things to do with WAY too many moons to find. The Galaxy series were the best, as they took some of what made 64 great and juiced it up perfectly.

Lolly70d ago

Yes! Let's release an almost 30 year old game to kick off the next generation for Nintendo...
I'm over re-releases...FEED ME NEW MARIO!

Gabe must leave the billionaire's castle?!

Gamingsince1981144d ago

It costs a lot to air lift him out the roof.

mkis007144d ago

I dont think hes nearly big enough for that joke.

mastershredder144d ago

Big deal. He has to give a deposition i. person wowie. He requested to it remotely because you CAN request this and this is common as F especially with heads from larger companies being involved. Next.

Fist4achin144d ago

Antitrust. 3 Ts. HL3 confirmed.

Ah the first one in years as i said a few days ago. Thanks for breaking the streak.

I am shocked Gabe is still with us. Absolutely expected a widowmaker heart attack to take him out years ago. He never took care of himself. Hope for the rest of us?

Jin_Sakai152d ago (Edited 152d ago )

Why bring this to anyone’s attention? It’s his life and he could outlive any of us for the matter.

Reminds me of a story where an old lady had two doctors tell here that if she didn’t quit drinking Dr. Pepper it was going to kill here. And she lived to tell the story of how she’s 104 years old and that both doctors had died.

RhinoGamer88152d ago

He is very wealthy and has not used that wealth for charity (that I know of) and has used it for excess. Also, he seems obstinate and defiant to the pleading and wishes of his fanbase. So not someone to hold up in super high esteem.

Fist4achin152d ago

Was Dr Pepper one of their names?!

specialguest152d ago (Edited 152d ago )

@RhinoGamer88 - who the hell are you to say how he should use his wealth?? You don't know his personal life and what he's done. Not all good deeds are announced out loud to the world. Get off your high-horse. You don't have to be wealthy to give back, so what have you done to help the world?

Si-Fly152d ago

Do you make a point of letting everybody know you give to charity? I certainly don’t, it would be pretty gross. You have no idea about what Gabe does with his money, like you said.

shadowknight203152d ago

Your 1 of those people walking on the street with a surveillance camera showing you pass by while someone is getting robbed, just watching and moving along. You need help.

OtterX153d ago

Well it's staying true to its name, bc it's taking half my life to see a proper sequel.

Yui_Suzumiya151d ago

I'm gonna have to write that one down, lol

Godmars290152d ago

And yet even with multiple delays, nowadays there's no guarantee that a game will being functional.
