The Daily Five: Games with Unnecessary Sequels

"We’re not talking about games that had a bad sequel, but rather games whose sequels did nothing to forward the franchise or that continued a story that had already been concluded perfectly.

Today, we list off five great games that have unnecessary sequels that just didn’t need to be made." - Travis Tucker

GOW:A and GoW:J or which ever way round the internet prefers it today.

Oh and FF XIII

Throw in Arkham Origins and it was the year of unnecessary sequels.

I can't speak for Gear but GoW was painful to play through because it was a retelling of a story that's been done in previous games in the franchise. How does a franchise that only had one other main title on the PS3 feel like it's milked? Not sure but GoW did it.

Arkham was just crap. Instead of an Origin story it was the exact same game as Arkham City and completely pointless. Not only that, some of those boss fights were pure garbage while some were actually pretty good. The Deathstroke fight was crap and repetitive as hell. Killer croc was basically a tutorial. And the biggest sin was the most bad ass martial artist in the DCU being turned into one of Talia's female ninjas.

Perhaps no one should ever make another prequel...

Great suggestion with Arkham Origins. Gears Judgement was a sort of origin story of Cole and Baird whilst it was entirely new ground they covered with a different studio it was just disappointing throughout. Gears 3 ended a consistently great trilogy in a surprisingly emotional way and should probably have stayed that way.

I'd like it if Uncharted 4 or whatever it is called looks back to the original Drake's Fortune for some inspiration.

Giving variations on what happened in UC2 and UC3 is just going to give diminishing creative returns. You don't have to keep on trying to out-Citizen Kane Citizen Kane. Making the next Uncharted fun is enough- do things that have not been done at all or for a long time. When Drake enters a room give him multiple options to finish off enemies and progress. A collapsible building that he can shoot for instance.

Personally I miss the pleasure of traversing a river on jetskis. I know that the section is not everyone's favourite because it can be tricky but I'd like to see more jungle and more set pieces (traps if required) in the next Uncharted game. I'd like more atmospheric opulence as well- Dishonored has stayed in my head. It'd be good if it all went a bit James Bond Licence to Kill and you were forced to join sides with an enemy and do tasks for them.

Nd need to reinvent the game, more open maps and a deep upgrade system is a good start.

I want upgrades that change gameplay as you keep playing. Climbing, guns and melee all need a skill tree. Think far cry with the way they went all out with melee kills, and dont forget theres much more room for that in a 3rd person game.

Vehicles are a must also, and not just drive sequences where your shooting at people. Horse riding in Uncharted 3 was a step in the right direction.

Sounds like a lot but this is a next gen ND game and they really need to go to town with this game.

Since it seems to be set in Madagascar/Africa animals are a must. Lions, gorillas etc.

While Uncharted 3 was certainly not as amazing as 2, I wouldn't go so far as to call it "unnecessary". You are almost obliged to make a sequel to one of the best games ever made, especially considering Drake has an almost unlimited amount of adventures that he can go on without being constrained by a limited story arc that requires a defined beginning and end.

InTheLab3711d ago

The only thing I want from Uncharted is less "oh no, I jumped to a ledge and it crumbled but I barely was to hang on". By the time UC3 rolled around I could predict these moments which made it stale. The next TR should follow that advice as well.

blackstrr4113711d ago

...And the supersonic ears on all guards while you're trying stealth your way. And how come drake is soldier(he is really really good with all gun types), sully shouldn't be able to climb walls at his age. He's like 70 ish and the reporter too. They are all good with weapons. Like seriously good. Smgs, assualtrifles, shotguns RPG's and stuff

Visiblemarc3711d ago

Yeah tbh the whole thing baffles me.

UC3 is one of the best games of all time... and time and again it's the game critics love to hate.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, I'm getting tired of hipster game critics who can hate a game for any possible reason.

UC3 was a way above average action story, with surprising depth and heart built into one of the best playing and jaw dropping action games ever. What is there to complain about?

"It's too similar to UC2" -Yeah...that's because it's a direct sequel! What is wrong with people?

It starts to remind me of that simpsons episode where home became a food critic. "Sorry Marge I'm afraid this gets my lowest rating ever: Seven thumbs up."

a multitude of COD sequels definitely.

CharlesSwann3711d ago

How about the xbone? It's not a game but it sure was an unnecessary sequel.

Mikefizzled3711d ago

The Xbox One is actually a reboot of what was until recently referred to as Xbox One. And just like the original Xbox One the reboot will probably trail behind the competition. Even though the Xbox was more powerful than the PS2.

‘Stellar Blade, but good’ is here, and it came out seven months ago

Stellar Blade might be the hot game right now, but we already got a better version of it more than half a year ago.

Stellar blade is currently higher than lies of p on metacritic with 40 more reviews. No shade on Lies of P but just pointing that out.

But i don't even know why compare them? Because both are souls type games?

Then you can just reuse this article all the time and say Elden Ring is "whatever new souls game" but good for every new souls game.

Stellar blade hate articles must be rolling with clicks...

Tacoboto12m ago

Everyone in here now is clicking and commenting on this post.

Whoever the "community" is that approved it (Doubt it), contributors should report this article and any other from this low-quality click-bait website for being exactly what it is.

Remember that the reviewer loved the combat too. But because of the character and physics he wrote it off immediately.

CrimsonWing691h ago

I mean… it’s like saying we have a better NieR with Devil May Cry. Yea, there’s some similarities, but Lies is really hardcore in the sense of emulating a FromSoft game almost perfectly, where Stellar has some Souls-like elements, but I’d say it’s closer to Sekiro than say a Dark Souls game. This almost feels click-baitey

Psychonaut851h ago

What if, and hear me out, they’re both really good? Mind blowing, I know.

Christopher1h ago

Listen here you, that's not how this is supposed to work. You choose a side and you defend it. None of this little "what if there's more than one good game out there" nonsense.

Crows901h ago(Edited 1h ago)

Oh geez...this is why journos suck...they can't even see differences between games.

Stellar blade is nothing like lies of P. Didn't these guys give stellar a bad score? Geez they really hate it. Stop the hate! Lol
