Microsoft's Xbox One Is Selling So Poorly Retailers Are Getting Desperate

Things aren't looking good for Microsoft's Xbox One. After what was admittedly a very strong debut, sales of the console have slowed to a crawl. Last month, according to research firm NPD, rival Sony's PlayStation 4 outsold Microsoft's console in the U.S. by a ratio of 2 to 1.

Is the runaway success of the PlayStation 4 simply overshadowing Microsoft's latest console, or is the Xbox One not doing as well as Redmond expected? The latter is looking increasingly likely, as retailers such as Target, Wal-Mart, and GameStop have begun to offer heavy incentives on the Microsoft console.

They should have made 2 different consoles. One with TV and Kinect and the other without them. The other one should come geared towards gamers with a game and controller or something to fit the price tag and the gamers needs.
That's the thing I've been seeing with these companies and why I go Sony. MS meets the needs of their wallets, and although Sony does too, not NEARLY as much. They also put gamers first because they know we are the hand that feeds. MS sees us as a bunch of idiots I feel by hiding the auto renew, CHARGING for XBL in the first place (thin air anyone?), not removing ads even AFTER I pay them....things like this make me happy I made the right move buying a PS4.

Or should I bring up the 1080P 60FPS battle?

What they and their investors care about is how the system is selling NOW, especially in comparison to its competitors. Not only that, based on the way it is selling it seems as though the demand for the console is dropping way to quickly while the ps4 is still going very strong.

1. Where did you get that 4 million figure from?

2. If the ps4 had sold 10 million by now and the xbone only sold 4 million, do you think they would still consider the xbone a success based on your logic?

3. Out of that "supposed" 4 million, how many were sold through to customers and how many are sitting on store shelves?

4. A "huge" success is in comparison to what exactly? The wiiU which has been out for a year and the xbone has sold past in three months? Or ps4 sales which came out at the same time as the xbone and has already doubled the sales in europe and is consistently outselling it in the usa?

At no point did I say the xbone will not sell or is not selling, but if you cannot see the huge decrease in sales that is taking place or the fact that the amount it is starting to lag behind the ps4 is going to make microsoft worry, then you should probably continue sticking your head in the dirt, ignoring the facts and not read articles like this.

MS announced 3.9 million shipped as of December 31 (in their official financial report). Even if a few hundred thousand were sitting on store shelves, it's been seven weeks since that report. Using reliable reporting services, it's pretty easy to see that Xbox One is now near 4 million, unless you believe that virtually no Xbox One's have been sold in the past seven weeks.

Everything Axios2 said is 100% fact. It comes directly from a Sony controlled website (Dualshockers).

Sony is nearly 2 million ahead already, is sold out nearly every where, especially in America, and they are basically selling PS4s as fast as they can manufacture them. Meanwhile you can purchase an XBOX ONE on nearly any retail site right now.

See that's what this article is about. It's not about overall sales totals. It's about, what appears to be, X1 sales slowing down.

I don't think it's a stretch to say that 3 months into this new generation and it appears that Sony is just going to run away with this generation. Especially world wide. It appears they are going to in North America as well.

Sony is launching their PS4 in Japan in a few days and I would be surprised if they don't sell at least 1 million in the first week.

Oh and BTW Sony hasn't released their heavy hitters yet. Oh but they're coming. Along with a bunch of brand new IP's as well.

The XBOX ONE is selling less than the PS3 world wide. Now we all know vgchartz is usually off a bit on their numbers BUT they usually over track MS hardware and under track PS hardware. So these totals could be even more in favor of Sony.

Considering this latest tidbit of info. It appears that this article is spot on. X1 sales are below PS3 sales and the PS4 is out pacing it nearly 3 to 1 world wide.

From November 22nd to December 31st Microsoft sold an average of 500,000 consoles per week (3million/6weeks). 900,000 consoles was less than a 2 week supply in the retail channel. Sold from a company standpoint is to retailers which are authorized resellers to the end user. Consoles are sold from Microsoft and Sony to Gamestop, Walmart, etc.

Why would you think selling out constantly is normal? When Gamestop sells an Xbox, they restock with another. If they don't have any to sell they lose sales. With less demand, supply isn't an issue. It is also normal for sales to drop after the holidays. Sony still has high demand since they had low supply through December. People traditionally buy consoles for games. There isn't enough on either console to drive sales. Sony is still riding a PR high and people are still picking up consoles since they are in limited supply. People always want what they can't have. It's marketing.

Yes, we have forgotten, because that never happened. Unless you're the kind of person that thinks USA = The World, then the PS3 ALWAYS outsold the Xbox 360 globally since launch. I don't know where you're pulling 2:1 in favour of the 360 out of, but there damn sure isn't any light there.

Where and when, like Dragon Knight stated... you forgot the rest of the world, ignored the year plus headstart and disregarded the replacement units purchased before the replacement scheme took off.

Time will ultimately tell how well the x1 is selling but you'd be totally naive to think ms is totally pleased with what its selling in context to its main competitor. Their hallowed home turf isn't their own anymore so thats got to hurt if the trends continue. The higher price for weaker hardware is hurting them. Their reveal is still hurting them, their last gen minimalistic ethos is hurting them. Rrod is still hurting them. Some people don't just forget the past and many are still affected by the recessions. Many factors have led to the sales discrepancy.

No, they havent been the most innovative company in the market, but they have brought some good things, along with Nintendo. The Albertsons in my area (grocery store) is having their yearly sweepstakes thing where if you match certain stickers (that you get when purchasing groceries) then you can win stuff (much like McDonalds Monopoly).

@krispy - I doubt it, this is essentially free advertising for the XB1, and that doesn't come for free.

Now if it was some local Mom & Pop place who wanted to hold their own giveaway out of their own pockets, yeah I could see them choosing any console they wanted without any outside influence. But this is a nationwide chain of stores, MS greased their palms without a doubt. Probably offered them X amount of XB1's to giveaway for free (or heavily discounted). I checked the prize list online, and shows they have 250 XB1's to give away.

Plus what store would want to give away the console that isn't as popular or successful as another? These giveaways drive sales because people think they can win something good. But if nobody wants the prizes, then what good does it do? It makes the most sense to offer the most wanted prices possible, so the fact they chose the XB1 over the PS4 likely isn't coincidental. Although I do admit getting 250 PS4s might have been impossible for them.

But just imagine if they had 250 PS4's to give away, which have been near impossible to find for the last 3 months and are absolutely massive in demand right now... their sales would see a HUGE boom due to that. But offering an XB1 which is in stock everywhere? Sure it's still free, but the incentive just isn't as strong.

Unless this was just an issue of them not getting the PS4 supply they wanted, then without a doubt MS gave them some nice incentives to offer up the XB1.

360 sold two hundred and something thousand in its first January, and it was supply constrained. Xbox One is not and other than MS fangirls, who bought the first couple million, general consumers have spit at the price and laughable hardware (yes even the dummest person can figure out or hear on Twitter how they're being fleeced).

It's not selling poorly by itself altough the twice as fast as 360 only applies to the actuall launch, but compared to the competition that is sold out in many places it gets outsold in the US 2:1. Surely that's not really what MS would want. MS runs the risk with retailers having plenty of consoles in stock that they wont order that many and they will be pile up in MS storage. The big areas that MS won with 360 where the US and UK and in both they currently lose by quite a margin. MS can't be happy with since what matters is to be number one.

I'm not sure why they still haven't announced any release dates for other regions. Many EU countries are still missing and so is Japan. It's not like they can't produce enough consoles to satisfy demand.

Absolute bs you know it. Its a hot item and the xb1 will be when it drops price and kinect. Microsoft has already said they wanted to invest their ideas and money into a complete entertainment center instead of just a gaming machine, I think they found out the hard way that we are not ready for that. Yes overall it has sold more than the 360 did in the same time, but the problem is that XBOs January sales were well below what the 360's were in January 2006.

1st month January sales after launch.

Wii: 1.05m
PS4: 650k
360: 520k
PS3: 380k (didn't launch in EU until March)
XBO: 300k
WiiU: 240k

That's why it's a problem. The XBO is barely outselling what the Wii U did it's first January, and behind the PS3 even with it's $600 price tag and still hadn't launch it what would become it's largest market Europe. The XBO; however, is in it's best selling territories already, and it still can't keep up. When it launches in more countries that will add maybe an extra 1/3 to it's sales bringing it up from 300k to 400k per month after the initial launch in those regions.

It had an amazing launch, but now we're on to it's full 1st year of sales, and it's not looking good. TitanFall is being banked on, but with it coming to 360 and PC, I only see it doubling the sells for the month of March, which mean it'll only match the PS4 number if inFAMOUS doesn't sell consoles. But if you look at the February number so far, the PS4 is pretty much in he same space in the 140k range weekly (before launching in Japan) and the XBO number have dropped down to as low as 50k units per week.

MS needs an amazing E3, and they need a price cut between $400, and even then they're still going to be behind.

In Texas (Austin and Dallas/Ft Worth) there are shelves full of XB1s, while the PS4 shelves are always empty. At the Austin Best Buy I was in yesterday, there's a big XB1 display in front of the door, and an In Stock sign directly in front of the packed XB1 shelves, which is hilarious. If you look at those supply tracking sites, PS4s will be listed in stock for about 5 minutes at a time.

I want to love my Xbox One but I only own Dead Rising 3 and I can only play Killer Instinct so much. Currently all my play time is being divided between my PS4 and PC. Having the better versions of multi plats goes a long way between exclusives. That's how 360 did so well, cheaper and with marginally better multi plats along with some good exclusives. Now PS4 is cheaper, more powerful, has the better multi plats, and if you go by awards the best first party devs. MS is betting their souls on Titanfall right now, but a three platform game that will be second best on XB1 can only be so much of a system seller.

Wrong. First off, the PS3 wasn't weaker than the 360. The problem was nobody understood how to work with the cell processor in the beginning. But in time people learned. During which time multi platforms started to even out and some of them even started to come out better on the PS3.

And to be fair, the PS3 was priced right for what it was. $300 for a game system and $300 for a blu ray player. Keep in mind Blu Ray players at that time were STILL well over $1000.

So you can't really put XB1's situation in the same context as the PS3. Because unlike the PS3, there is no "exotic" chip that people suddenly have to understand. And unlike the Blu Ray which was both necessary AND built into the PS3 which made the price what it was, the XB1 is pushing something that is NOT necessary (Kinect) which is driving up the price

You're not getting the point. The 360 sold roughly 60% of all units in the US. That's it's home turf. The Xbox One is being outsold 2:1 in the US, and it's worse in other countries.

The amount of countries the Xbox One is available in obviously isn't the issue. At the end of Dec, Sony had 4.2 million units sold while Microsoft had 3.9 million shipped with reportedly roughly a quarter of that amount sitting on store shelves, unsold.

It's all well and good to say "Bu..bu...if it just launched in more countries!" That's a fantasy, not reality. I could just as easily point out that the PS4 figures would probably be much, much higher if the damn things were actually in stock anywhere. But why argue imaginary scenarios? What's the point?

At the end of the day, the Xbox One is being outsold, and in their home market it's being outsold badly after stuffing the channels to inflate their Christmas numbers.

And they did that BECAUSE they know all those "other countries" won't garner them good sales. Trust me, if they felt those other countries would merit stellar sales, the XB1 would be in those countries RIGHT NOW.

As for the PS2/Gamecube/Xbox, the latter two systems launched more than a year and a half after the PS2 had a chance to become established, and the PS2 was riding a surge in DVD popularity. It's not 2002 anymore. You can't honestly be comparing what happened back over a decade ago to today's marketplace.

And currently, sorry to break it to you, yes. The Xbox One is being outsold by close to 2:1 in the US. Just google the NPD numbers for January. They had a nice jump out of the gate and then fell on their face in the US. The fact that they're being so badly outsold now in the US isn't something you can just dismiss as unimportant.

Right now my wife bought me a ps4 for the holidays and I will be buying an xbox later this year. This article should be taken with a grain of salt. They could have matched Sony's price and been bigger competition, but MS can't give up this dream that motion control is gonna pay off for them like it did for Nintendo back in 2007. I really have to thank MS. Every week they give me something to laugh about. It's always a joy to hear about their absolute failure. Sega, one of the original giants, dropped out of the console race. It isn't impossible for this to happen to MS too. Fingers crossed!

I went to EB games with my Mate who was going to buy a XB1 today and they told him its sold out We pre-order it and have to wait a week.

As for the title, XB1 is selling so poorly...... wait what? its had the 2nd best launch in gaming history and has only been out for a couple months with no big games. Wait until MS use all there bullets before making such non sense.

I loved the original Xbox. One buddy had a Gamecube, the other two had a PS2, my brother got a PS2, but I got the Xbox and they laughed and taunted me and told me Microsoft was the devil but, I didn't care I got one anyway. I eventually had all three. So, when I'd finally heard about the Xbox 360, I was psyched. It would have Resident Evil 5 and the graphics were amazing. I returned home Michigan and got a 360 and I was happy. The transition was easy because the Xbox was great. Until I discovered the PS3 that I had been badmouthing in favor the 360 because I knew nothing of the PS3, that is, until I actually played it.

The PS3 over the last gen has been amazing. I pretty much had my 360 to play Gears of War and that was it. After Gears of War 3, it went into its box and then into storage and I felt more at home on PlayStation. Sony's first-party and exclusives knocked the crap out of what Microsoft had, I was just so caught up in the craze of the 360 in 2006 that, I had blinders on until my buddy begged me to try the PS3 and it was an instant sell. That transition of how well Sony took care of me made it easier to invest in my PS4 and I don't regret it at all. I've been able to try the Xbone and contrary to my 360 to PS3 experience, I'm not at all sold on the Xbone and haven't been since its announcement. Its as though everything Microsoft could do wrong, they did.

What makes everyone so angry is that Microsoft blatantly lied to everyone and everyone found out. They were caught. Then Microsoft hired some really unkempt people off the street to tell everyone at Best Buy that the whole marketing crew had been fired and guys like him could straighten everything out and answer everyones question. Guess what? Everything he told me I crossed referenced and he was hired by Microsoft to lie to me as well in a desperate attempt to make money. What's happening now? Well, Microsoft has gone to EA and now EA is following Microsoft more. That's why the previous CEO left. He saw all of this coming.

The Xbone is selling extremely poor. Its easy to find one anywhere--and that's not because Microsoft is so good at keeping the shelves stocked, its because they can't sell them. But, to hear the PS4 is outselling the Xbox 2:1 doesn't seem so bad actually. If it was 10:1, I'd really be worried but, if the actual numbers are really 2:1, then what's the big fuss about? The Xbone is still selling. I get the feeling that number isn't accurate if Microsoft is in this much danger. Its likely its 4:1 or 5:1.

Hi, first post of this entire fanboy war that's been going on (been avoiding the fight!) Having been an Xbox fan I got a One. Love it for the games and love it for the integration with my TV/Netflix etc. About a month ago I got a PS4 as that's what my mates got. Compared COD on both my systems and it def looks smoother and better on the PS4 - BUT it doesn't PLAY any better, once things get moving you cannot perceive the difference IMO.

Been playing Titanfall beta and it's superb fun, so yeah, it's def a killer app and looks set to be the best next gen game offering for a while yet anyways. Whatever rez it runs at don't matter to me as both COD's played identically - and Titanfall is obscene fun even if it's lower rez (which in the heat of the battle I ain't stopping to check texture resolutions anyway) the Xbox offers different things which I enjoy, the PS4 looks sweeter but that doesn't change the way a game plays to me.

So, to sum up before you all fall asleep - the xbox IS a great games machine and even though the res is lower it makes 0 impact on actual gameplay for me at least. Shame it's getting a bad stigma, cuz having lived with it since launch and beside a PS4 for a month, I can 100% honestly say it totally holds its own.

So I'm sure someone has stated this before but I work at walmart and We have a big sign on the front doors that states "We have Xbox Ones in stock!" And in the back we have about 20 and 4 are actually out on the sales floor. I just find it funny that we have so many but we can't keep a PS4 in stock

Here is the truth of why Xbox One is loosing steam it boils down to one factor. It does not bother me much but many people that favored the Xbox One but were on the have jumped over to the PS4 simply because of one word little phrase "Full HD 1080P Games" for some people like me it does not matter to play a 900P, 792P or even 720P game but to a lot of others it does. Microsoft blew it with that and in some people minds being a bit under powered is not a big deal but when all the releases are constantly not on par with the competition does nothing for your image.
