PS4 is Selling so Much Faster than PS3, PS2 and PS1 that it’s Not Even a Competition

With 5.3 million sold through to customers, it’s a given by now that the PS4 is selling very fast, faster than its predecessors, but how much faster? Quite a lot.

As soon as I saw the milestone it had reached, I knew this wasn't gonna be just some mild success for Sony...

Over 5 million units? Sold THROUGH? The PS4 hasn't even been available in both NA and EU for THREE MONTHS. Less than three months and it hasn't even launched in its home country?

Those figures are unfathomable. It managed to reach the sales figures of Nintendo's newest console from 2012 in under 90 days.

Think about that.

On another note, every generation has had at least one console reach the 100 Mil Club since the 5th generation (PSOne, PS2, Wii). I think it's safe to say that one of these consoles will do the same this generation. The question is... how fast? The PS2 broke records when it became the fastest to reach that figure after close to 6 years on the market. With the PS4 selling faster than Sony's - and the industry's - most successful console in history, it's making for a really entertaining story.

I haven't even bought my PS4 yet! Waiting for inFamous: SS but, to be honest... I might not be able to wait another whole month.

Great news for sony and the PS4. Lets all think positive. We have heard how the wii-u was selling faster than the wii in its initially launch and how the xb1 was selling faster than 360 when it launched.

but this is sony so there is potential for it to sustain that launch momentum. Quick out of the gate is one thing but it has to have lasting power to stay in the lead and so far its looking that way.

on a side note, I would encourage everyone who eventually gets their PS4 to consider picking up a secondary system like a wii-u or xb1. its good to play the field especially when there are games on both that you wont be able to play on PS4 and vice versa. Next gen FTW.

*Back on topic - Amazing to see the numbers of the launch consoles. It goes to show I wasn't the only dumbass waiting in line for the PS1 and 2. PS3 and it was too expensive so I didn't have any problems going to the store and buying one. and PS4 I saw the writing on the wall when they debuted it, I went right to Amazon and pre-ordered it. I have both consoles (PS4 & X1) and GHOST for both. I have played on both consoles in the same day several times over and usually there are more people playing GHOST on the PS4 than X1. Only once did I see a higher number of X1 players and it was only by a couple thousand.

I still haven't seen one in any store I've been in.. I was at Gamestop over the weekend and within 15mins of the store opening, there had already been more than 20 people coming in asking for the PS4 (they didn't and haven't had any at this store for quite sometime, I asked) To their credit, the sales associate asked them if they wanted a Xbox One.. should've seen the reactions on the faces of these people, would have curdled milk.

I'm playing Xenoblades on my Wii. Now, I do support all three companies and have the PS4, XBONE, & Wii U under my TV. I've never really got all the sales numbers things, but noticed that what the Wii did last gen is always down played. Maybe it didn't have online support and no good FPSs, but it definitely had great games.

The difference is that Wii sold as a FAD for 3 years.After the Fad over,the sales went down and Nintendo abandoned the machine with only 5 years in the market.

Not really. Before that time folks had to choose between graphics and an innovative way to play. Then PS3 and XBOX 360 added motion control and people no longer had to choose. Wii sales decreased and the PS3 and XBOX 360 sales increased.

My sister bought me a PS4 in early January,I think the host family got access to ToysRus warehouse or something they managed to find 3 PS4s left all three of them planned to sold as bundle pack I think she cut the staff some slack (bribed them) and get one for me! (She bought it as a Standard PS4)
At least that's what I think of,I really don't know how they be able to get one during that console drought but my sister said that her host family looked pissed after they bought a console.
Looked as if they went through a lot of trouble to get a PS4.

The system is doing great and it's not even out in all it's strongest regions just yet. It's going to be the highest selling 8th ten console come the Japan release, and once Sony's own AAA titles start really dropping within the next year, it's only going to snowball from there. Not to mention if multi plats remain better on the system, then it will be people's choice for multi plats as well. Just make sure this train keeps roaring, Sony. It's nowhere near out of the woods just yet, but it's doing great so far.

I dont think that the console itself will break PS2s records but it will sell well.

The initial sales push is just because more people are aware of the start of the 8th generation because everyone is overhyping it. Some people are still buying 7th gen consoles either because they are "catching up" or casuals.

Im not in a hurry though. Still waiting for the sales rush to slow down so Sony can bring PS4s to the market that arent as rushed. (every playstation console gen has suffered from launch day model problems, they might not break in a month or a year but once they do, it will be a nasty timing)

I haven't bought my ps4 yet,still catching up on ps3 games and the great prices that I have been getting the games for. I will buy my ps4 when a few more games that I want come out. For now, the ps3 is just fine for my gaming needs.

As I've said before; the PlayStation has always been and always will be a superior console. why? Because it is designed for real gamers while having a rich history and culture among the fans base. Same controller since PS1 Duel shock which means you don't have to get use to a new controller (a la Nintendo and Xbox).

Nothing to do with dire stock on both ps2 and ps3 launches (something they've corrected this time but still in demand) and the fact the ps1 cost £400 on launch the ps2/3 weren't cheap in the U.K either specially not with inflation from over the years, yet ps4 has come in at a great price and I'm very glad mine turned up on launch day, not getting as much use as it should (too much of a backlog) but once thief, metal gear and a couple of others come Game on!!!.... In 1080p of course ;)

I had the xbox one and have been with xbox from the beginning. I had to swap the box for a ps4, which Tbh I am enjoying and knowing I have a very powerful machine which seems to be future prove, makes me feel a bit more secure. The xbx has let me down, after waiting years for next generation Microsoft put crappy hardware in there box. It's all about the games not the media side of things. I want to play games and maybe some Netflix but that is abt it. Microsoft you let me down and I even had 8 years as a xbox live member on my gamer tag.

No joke, I work at best buy. We got a shipment of 7 or 8 ps4s around like 7 o'clock. Around 730,they were gone lol! Sony has really done some magic this current generation and it shows.

They've sold 3.6 million Xbox ones because they launched in their home territory first, Japan doesn't even get ps4 until Saturday and yet ps4 still outsold Xbox 2:1 (in the US) nothing to do with the 30 or 40 extra countries, the big ones have been covered by both companies Europe USA uk and japan but oh wait xbox won't bother with japan and yet ps4 hasn't even started there yet.

Even I will by a ps4 but it depends if these games the witcher 3(i.e. if i have to buy an expensive graphic card for it well the developer as said nothing about the system requirements yet )and FFXV come on PC then I will not buy a ps4.
