Final Fantasy XV’s gameplay trailer has left us none the wiser

Final Fantasy XV has been in the works since 2006, but despite its long development gamers still have so little information about how the game will actually work.

We still don't know much about the story and that's better off this way imo. What's the point of playing the game if you know how it goes b4 it launches?

It looks way too fluid to be anything even resembling a turn based battle system. That said, if it's like a crisis core game then I might enjoy it on it's own merit but it really doesn't resemble traditional final fantasy games.

@FamilyGuy I knew that, actually. I just thought that with it being a numbered final fantasy game, maybe they changed direction in the design decisions. Which, apparently, they did not.

FF15 (vs13) has always been said to be an action-based rpg similar to the kingdom hearts games. Its battle system/type/genre was one of the first things ever known about the title.

You aren't seeing a resemblance of turn-based game play because there is nothing turn-based about it.

Square put out a classic FF rpg a few days ago. If s called bravely default. It's rather sweet.

I just hope they show something at the japanese launch. I mean, it´s their big hometurf, it´s the best time to show something. Frequent updates my ass. Square should stop these policies that prevent the developers from sharing, it just hurts their games because nowadays every developer is opening up, sharing monthly info, screenshots, blogs, concept art. Nomura has said he would like to share, but is not allowed to.

Except we've seen three versions of the game, with two of them being the PS3 one. It would hurt them, and us, more if they showed one version an delivered another.

It´s obvious I´m only talking about the PS4 version, and about the fact that Nomura said there would be frequent updates in 2013 after E3, during which we only received 2 seconds of new clip, and rehashed information that we already knew from the PS3 versions clips. It wouldn´t hurt to keep up their promise, but Square is intentionally impeding info from coming out, god knows why.

That may not be true. If he/she plays this and enjoys it, they may very likely go on to play older Final Fantasy games. You have to start somewhere, and heck I started with XIII and have gone on to play VII, IX and am currently playing IV and have enjoyed all of them, even in going directly from XIII to VII (which was an enormous graphical jump, as you can imagine). I still enjoyed XIII for what it was, I mean that was my first try of the JRPG genre and to play that sort of game, and despite what people say about it, I liked it for what it was and it got me into the FF series so it will always in a way have a certain importance to me (even if I detest what the XIII saga is and has done).

See this is what we really want. FF 14 may hold me... Yet honestly I wished XIII-3 came with a demo of XV like the old days. Hell I would rather spend 20-40$ on two hours of this any day.

They dont know what to do... such a mistake.... they can't just do a half finished game and don't know what to do anymore. You must plan good and not rush it.. seems like they are out of ideas now. Really want this game looks diffrent and cool.

Right now my general impressions of the trailer is that its going to be - flameshield on - another corridor title but far better done than FF13.

In that I mean you'll be going from point A to B in a stirring action QTE sans standard QTE markers, will have multiple targets, and then open areas to through but there will still be "point A to B" events to mark those areas.

In other words its going to be the actual, modernized, version of a standard FF title but have realtime combat instead turn based. Have the town elements and crowd AI which should have been in FF13 if the hardware and the understanding there of had been more developed.

The only question is, between the giant fights and the behemoth, how much of it is going to be scripted.

The trailers shown on PS3 2 years ago showed open world exploration... In fact, Bonita himself said there is a world map, exploration, towns, cities and even airship traversal.

And that was confirmed by him after all the uproar over FF13 was learnt to be very linear. The scope of the game has expanded since moving to Next Gen Platforms so I don't think it'll be a linear affair like FF13, though there were some portions that shown action inside buildings, offices and such.

Consider the reply to my 3.1 comment. Also that you're trying to use a PS3 trailer as indication for a what is now a PS4 game.

We don't know what changes have been made and can only hope that a better job will be done than FF13. Which from its very first original trailer promised to be a better game than it was.

It also doesn't help that by Talsin's comment, Square has made and broken easy, simple promises about informing us about FF15's development. That Nomura made those promises.

This was going to be the open-world epic even if it had released on last-gen consoles. Better hardware will mean they can do more with the game, and it has definitely benefitted a shift to next-gen. If anything, they can do more open-world, ambitious stuff with this kind of visual fidelity, because of the better hardware.

I don't know how better hardware can lead to downgrades in vision, scope and focus.

I think FFversus13 was a niche project, which SquareEnix noticed was turning into something really big and good in a slight different way from previous FF games.

This made them take a strategic business decision to rename it to 14, and make it multiplat, which also increased the development time by approx 2-3 years.

imo, Fabula Nova Crystallis was hardly a niche project. Pretty big undertaking, if you ask me.
