Watch Dogs delayed on Wii U, Ubisoft confirms

Hard to gauge how well a timely released, fully supported, technically well made game would do on the wii u at this point. Because there has literally never been one multiplat from 3rd parties fitting those qualifications.
If this made good use of the gamepad and filled all those voids? I would gladly buy it. I remember a poll on neogaf said the same thing... with more saying theyd buy a well made wii u version than ps4 version. If someone could link that poll thatd be cool.

Nintendo fans claim that the lack of third party game purchases is because third parties don't give as much support, Third parties claim that they give less support because they don't buy them.

It certainly doesn't help that at the turn of the century, Nintendo created a console with tiny discs in a time when data contained in games was exploding and had a controller with one less button than the other two systems in a time when games were becoming more complicated. Then they came out with a completely non-traditional system that didn't suit most third parties. And most recently, in a time when power has been a constantly pushed issue by developers, they went half-cocked with the performance.

Nintendo hasn't done great by third parties in the last 13 years and third parties just don't seem motivated to create impressive games on Nintendo systems.

They're both to blame, but it's on Nintendo's head to fix the relationship between them and third parties because it's THEIR system that's going to fail if they don't.

Meh i was going to get the WiiU version but this news has sold me on the ps4 version. The WiiU really is doing bad that even 3rd party devs are delaying games for the platform it wouldn't surprise me if it gets cancelled all together ;)

Yeah this is one of those games that they probably don't want to make on this platform because most people as you say would/will more than likely buy it on PS3/360 PS4/Xbone.

Don't get me wrong. This game will be fantastic on whatever platform you play it on. However I just don't thing the Wii Us user base is the type to pick up a game like this.

However I could easily be proven wrong. I hope it does do well on the Wii U. Something other than Nintendo games need to, otherwise we will continue to see less and less support for the system, effectively killing the system. I love Nintendo, and don't want to see them fail.

Well then at that same token, couldn't the PS4 be the best overall (using your own example) as you should technically be able to use a PS Vita, Tablet or an ACTUAL cellphone as interfaces with the second screen options/capability within the PS4 already?

PS vita only does remote play. You can mirror the game to it but not have a different image on it like wii u. People have to stop comparing vita and wii u. It's a different concept...
And using a tablet or smartphone yeah but have fun switching between your phone and gamepad all the time. With wiiu the 2nd screen is in the perfect spot because it was designed to do exactly that. Everything else is a workaround imho.

It's just sad that people are too narrow minded to see what the wii u can offer in terms of gameplay... Wii U version of Watchdogs will be the best one indeed especially in terms of gameplay and immersion (graphically it will be between ps3 and ps4 as stated by ubisoft).
But it could also very well be the last game ubisoft ever releases for wii u.

No, why would Ubisoft implement all these features so that like 10% of PS4 owners could take advantage of it. EVERYONE has a gamepad with the Wii U version, hardly anyone has a Vita who has the PS4. Remember, the Vita utilizes wireless technology just as the WiiU's controller capability does to offer the exact same idea implementation as the WiiU's version. I'm not a fanboy. I'm a PC gamer first, and a console gamer second. Though I own all of the consoles as well. Except for the newest PS4 and Xbox one.

I just jump in whenever I think people are spreading misinformation or stupidity. Nintendo has been getting a little bit less of it over the past week or so, so I've had to start defending the Xbox one from time to time too.

I just want gamers to stop arguing about stupid things like specs(which for me is ironic because of how Sony fanboys complain about the "weak" specs of the Wii U, even though compared to most gaming PCs, PS4 is a joke too.), and enjoy games and experiences. I do not think so. There is no release date for the Wii U version and there hasnt been a single piece of footage shown from the Wii U version. It is essentially a vaporware. If the game performs below expectations on other platforms or Wii U sales do not pick up then it is as good as cancelled.

Ubisoft got greedy and thought that releasing a game like Rayman Legends multi-platform would be worth competing with GTA V in market presence within the same month. Lo and behold, less-than-stellar performance in sales. And in some act of bizarre irony, the Wii U version sold the best.

Let's hope Ubisoft doesn't make that stupid mistake again.

The PS3 version of Rayman sold the best and the XB 360 version sold nearly as many as the Wii U version -

Ubisoft sold far more copies of Rayman going multiplat than they wold have if they had kept it only on the Wii U

The ps3 version only caught up because everyone switched to Mario 3d world instead and because ubisoft betrayed a lot of wii u owners that wanted it sooner than it was offered, while ps3 owners had fewer choices and went with rayman because that was the best platformer they could get at the time without buying a wii u.

Actually I'm saying I won't buy Watchdogs period. I also have a PS4 so the lack of 3rd party games on the Wii U don't really bother me, what does bother me is the double standard third parties hold Nintendo to. Third parties claim success of 1million sold on a install base of a 160 million, but cry fowl of 500k sold on an install base of 3mil. Also with most gamers here on N4G already owning atleast one of the HD twins, I don't get the lack of third party games being an excuse not to get a Wii U.

I see it as Watch Dogs being a very similar, but modern take on Assassin's Creed.

The Wii U sales of both Assassin's Creed 3 (230k) and Assassin's Creed 4 (130k) made up less than 2% of the total sales for the game. The Vita version of AC3 Liberation sold more than both of those combined, and still would have sold more if those numbers were doubled (910k).

Wii U will never be a priority for the majority of 3rd parties, because their games simply aren't selling, and even Nintendo IP's outside of Mario are struggling.

This game shouldve been released in November last year, they took another half year more and noe they say Wii U version will still be delayed? They cry about bad sales, but how can sales improve, if a game on a small install base will be the last to get that game? They had enough time to polish the game and the Wii U still needs time? I hope Ubi surprises us at lesst and gives us a great version, I mean the gamepad is supposed to give us the best experience, maybe they polish that and because of that it takes longer. Don't forget the xb1 and ps4 install base is even lower than the wii u atm.

I have bought every ubisoft game that was released on wii u even though I have a good gaming pc. The gamepad just offers something that is way more interesting to me than resolution or textures. And I will buy Watchdogs for it.

Lets face it, releasing a game on 360,PS3,XBO,PS4 and PC is enough of a hassle in itself. It's a bit of a Catch-22 really. People would love to see more third party developer support on the Wii U but with the sales those titles have been getting, those same developers have little to no interest in touching the platform.

Yeah....I mean, that's the next obvious step. They've put it on the back burner...and turned the burner off. Once they release it on the other platforms, and it sells about 10 million units, they might bother with the WiiU again. But it would be smart to just cancel it, rather than waste anymore resources on a mature game that won't sell on a family-focused platform. ZombiU isn't even close to 1 million yet, and COD:BLOPSII only sold about 200k. You know they'll be working on DLC + the sequel, for the other platforms...so they might as well not bother with it.

Ubisoft initially denied at least the cancellation rumors...but this doesn't look good. You only need to read the last part of this article to be able to read between the lines on this one:

I agree with most of what you said, except the Zombi U part. If I remember correctly, that game reached 500,000 sales when the Wii U's install base was barely around 4 million users. That's 25% of all Wii U users, which is a damn good install base, and I really don't know what did Ubisoft expect.

I can't blame them to be honest. Watch Dogs has been in development for at least 5 years now. Tons of money and resources have been put into it. The Wii U version, no matter how good it is, will not sell. 3rd party games on Wii U don't sell well, especially mature games, regardless of quality.

It's better in Ubisoft's eyes to focus on the other versions of the game which will be successful, and then once they've launched those they can come back and put some proper focus on the Wii U version if they think it's worth pursuing at that time.

The problem here is not Ubisoft. It's Nintendo. Nintendo acts as if they don't need 3rd party games to sell their consoles but they do. Nintendo alienates 3rd parties with their customized, low end hardware because it requires a ton more work compared to the PS4 and the XBO which are mostly extremely easy to work with aside from XBO's ESRAM.

The PS3 and the 360 are largely the same, and so both consoles use the same version of the game with obvious optimizations. Same goes for XBO, PS4, and PC. They're all close enough in power that they can run off roughly the same version of the game. The Wii U is different. It's much too slow to run the next gen version of the game, and the PS3/360 version is a bit low end for the system. The Wii U is in the middle of both gens, and so it requires its own custom version of every game which requires a lot of extra work, a lot of money, and a lot of resources/man power. It's not worth it.

If you want better 3rd party support then tell that to Nintendo and hopefully when it comes time to develop their next console they'll make it easier for 3rd parties to work with and support.

Delay the WiiU version of WatchDogs because we shelved making the game for a while so its not ready to ship, plus if the WiiU doesn't sell more... we can cut our loses now.

The problem is that developers and gamers don't *like* what Nintendo is doing with the system, it's not the type of system that they want. I'll rent the game for Ps3 when it comes out and call it a day. Unless they use the gamepad in a nice way and make the game at least on par with the other versions; I aint buying it. I'm not going to just bend over to these third parties just to be treated like shit.
Actually, maybe I'll put my money to good use and support some indie games instead, because it seems indies are more reliable and more deserving lately.

At this point, I'm like screw 3rd parties on Nintendo consoles. I'll buy games when I'm ready and not watered down versions either. Nintendo has earned my respect over the years, just do me right this gen. I buy 3rd party games and honestly they are the ones that screw me.

Every third party game that comes out needs a patch just to play right on every console, that sucks to be honest.

And for those that say the Wii U needs more power, I remind you of the N64 and GameCube. Lot of third parties didn't support those either and they were powerful consoles at the time. My opinion, Nintendo standards are to high for third parties so they make BS excuses because they are lazy.

As a Wii U owner it's frustrating to constantly feel penalised for owing a Nintendo system. I think I'm going to shelve my Wii U until something starts happening. As a Nintendo customer I feel like they have abandoned all support, no information, no updates, no solid dates. It's bewildering and it's no wonder why they have been dubbed as irrelevant or out of touch.

This month one game has come out that I know of, Donkey Kong. No other games have been advertised, if they have been released I didn't know about it. I'm going to purchase a ps4 later in the year, and with its limited library, at least I feel secure knowing Sony have games coming. With Nintendo, i have no idea if we'll even see Bayonetta 2, smash brothers in 2014, because no official statement has been made. We only just got confirmation Mario Kart is due in May, and I don't know if that's true or a report from a marketplace distributor. :/

Nintendo make it extremely difficult to support them, when they sit in absolute silence with no plan of the future. If they can't be bothered, why should we.

Why would you buy ps4 later in the year when they have no games. There will be more great first party games coming to Wii U. I will be buying PS4 when all the ps fanboys have bought it and PS4 sales begin to slow down. It will means that there will be a price cut for PS4. I will be no surprise that Nintendo will have a price cut before the end of the year to drive sales and they will do it before PS4 start reducing price Otherwise Nintendo will be in a worse state. Whatever Iwata is saying about no price cut until 2015 is to ensure that people who want to buy their consoles will buy it now and not wait until later. We all know that the price cut is coming around the holiday corner of 2014. In fact, I predict that Xbone will be the first to price cut follow by wii u and then Ps4. All these will happen before Mar 2015.

This WAS gonna be a game I would pre-order. But now that Ubisoft has delayed the game I will wait for a price drop if I even bother to get it. Just depends when it actually ends up launching. I'm real surprised that Ubisoft didn't learn from their last mistake with Rayman. People with Wii U will buy a Nintendo made game over a 3rd party game because with a Nintendo game they know they will get the best quality games. Delaying Watch Dogs will only hurt their sales. People with multiple consoles will just buy it on a different system, so no harm for Ubi there, but many people that only own Wii U will skip this title in order to buy one of the upcoming Nintendo titles. Hope Ubisoft knows what they are doing, but it doesn't seem like it.

What I don't understand is the costs of the port. Before the console came out, they clearly said a port cost barely 1.2 million. If it's the same architecture as the 360, of which they understand the programming language for, shouldn't development costs mean sales over 30k should break even?

Funny thing is they screwed Wii U owners by delaying Rayman to release on all platforms. At the time the Wii U had about a 3 million install base and STILL sold the most compared to 80 million install base PS3, 360. Ubisoft is full of crap and their decision makes no sense at this point. Nintendo should just buy struggling 3rd party companies at this point (Capcom, Square, Natsume etc etc), make tons of exclusive games and make the Wii U and future Nintendo consoles a must have system for EVERYONE. They should just ignore the 3rd party companies that take bribes and flip flop for no apparent reason.

Why not just make the controller do nothing than be a screen mirror. This way games come out. Making/forcing developers to make use of gamepad adds costs and it cannot be recouped on Wii U. If the game is just a straight port, we may see more titles hit Wii U
