Why 'Thief' will not have multiplayer and why it won't matter

With the introduction of the PS4 and Xbox One, we've seen an enormous jump in games largely based around multiplayer, but one game that has stuck to its guns and will look to deliver a perfect single player blend has to be Thief.

Recently, Thief director Nicolas Cantin discussed why exactly he and his team chose not to implement a multiplayer mode, and what things may serve as suitable alternatives for players.

Dishonored and Bioshock and Deus Ex (and the original Thief games, of course) did fine w/o multiplayer. Sad how whenever a game like this comes out, we always have to have THIS article, as if it's assumed every game should have multiplayer. The console-ization my my beloved PC franchises, I tell ya.

Very true sir. I will add to your bubbles, but it looks like you already have the high score.

IN this day and age Sony/Ms have put pressure on Devs to Staple, Duct tape, or glue a MP onto a SP game in hopes of getting more revenue from MP online play as COD took off to tremendous heights in sales.

So I find it very relieving to see a game being made with just a focus on SINGLE PLAYER.

Because not every Game needs Killstreaks, Perks, Glitches, and a spit glued on MP to be a good game.

Usually a good story, great Dev support, and valuable DLC will make a SP game sell very well.

For Gaming Gods Sake just look at the OVER 20 million units sold Skyrim did with it being just a SP game.

Thief now has my money as a focus on SP just made my day as I have 20 other games with MP when I want that online gameplay.

Games like Zelda, Stalker, Half Life, Fall-out and many others with great SP gameplay is what Gaming is all about because I may not be in the mood to play with others but instead enjoy a nice time in a virtual reality world far away from other humans for a while without having to hijack a Space Shuttle just to do it.

I dont agree with you very often, but you nailed it there.

A vast majority of the best games in videogame history are single player only. I havent been into multiplayer since splitscreen died and I dont think I'm missing much.

Mp seems to be a constant rehashing of tired old ideas and whenever someone does try something different it bombs because they strayed to far away from the Call of Duty formula which seems to be the desired norm of the masses.

No, give me a good story, intriguing characters, exciting set pieces and the ability to play the game at the pace I want to play it.

You cant happen upon a camp of enemies in MP and sit and watch their patterns, map their patrols and make a strategy on how to attack them. MP is 90% see someone, shoot.

Does everything have to have multiplayer? No. It just needs to deliver quality.

a great game is just as great with or without multiplayer huh :)

Im glad to see that games such as Infamous Second Son and Thief are focusing on the single player element rather that trying to find a way to create a multiplayer environment.

MatrixxGT3733d ago

Agreed. There's plenty of games that are great at MP (ex. Cod/BF) and they will always be there. The MP last for a very long time as well as thier servers. Some great SP games release with a cheezy MP tacked on that community doesn't last much past first price drop. After that I feel devs could have used that time and energy to turn that 8/10 game into a 9/10 game or whatever.

Does anyone view the lack of multiplayer, in a series that never previously had it, as a good thing for, if nothing else, the fact that development for said multiplayer didn't take away from development of the singleplayer itself?

Thief - Taken From Us Too Soon

The Thief game series has had many ups-and-downs, and 2014's reboot showed a great deal of promise nearly a decade ago.

Notellin264d ago

This would be such a great franchise to reboot. A darker game than Dishonored, but focused around stealth and large scale heists from an oppressive monarchy.

That's probably my dream game. I love immersive sims and stealth!

Noskypeno264d ago

People say they hate forced stealth sections in games. But a game focused on stealth with good mechanics and level design feels refreshing from the guns blazing games which I also enjoy. I really enjoyed playing Splinter cell, a game that not many try to mimic today. Not too many games let you shoot lights out, or throw cans or bottles to distract guards. Sure there are games with stealth options like the new Wolfenstein but it doesn't feel necessary to play it that way. Hitman might be the only game that has that feeling, except for that Korean game that may or may not ever come out.

You should try the Sniper Elite games, so good, especially with coop

Notellin263d ago

Same here. I'm glad there are some other people who enjoy these types of games!

@isarai I tried Sniper Elite 5 and ended up really enjoying that one. Went back and played 4 as well!.

The last one was a trainwreck and has been in the bargain bin since just after launch. If they bring it back, they need a massive change in direction.

Inverno264d ago

only direction they should take is putting it in reverse and going back to what the originals did. I couldn't finish this game, and I made a choice to never play it again. I watched a video about the og Thief and Deus Ex games and the current AAA standard will forever hold back these games. These 2 games alone had already solved so many problems with modern gaming that I don't think they'll get a chance at something great unless they're made by a dev that actually give a damn.

Jesus the last installment sells at about 2 euro and even that is over paying for it. Absolutely diabolical game

SimpleSlave264d ago

Ups and Down? More like Up, UP, Pot Hole, Free Fall into the Abyss...

Thief Deadly Shadows remaster would be awesome.
