Tomb Raider Definitive Edition Runs at 60fps on PS4 and 30fps on Xbox One

Rocket Chainsaw states that while both versions of the Tomb Raider definitive edition have unlocked frame rates with a minimum of 30fps, the PS4 version runs at 60 fps most of the time while the Xbox One version runs at 30 fps most of the time.

Of course both console can do 1080p 60fps. It depends on the game.

Truth be told this game doesnt need 60fps anyway (although it is nice) and most dont even want it until it drops in price.

But if you think this means nothing that the vast majority of multiplat games are coming out significantly better on PS4, especially after last gen when every little advantage (real and imaginary) x360 had was held up on a pedestal, then you cant handle the truth you talk about.

Its certainly very telling that Xbone is so far behind on so many games. And its only going to get worse, not better.

And please, I'll give you that Xbone has Titanfall, its not my type of game, but it does look great and I think it will be very popular, but dont play the cloud like a drawcard. The Cloud is just a big external Harddrive at the moment. The only ones doing anything with the cloud to actually improve gaming is Sony with PSNow. MS is just using cloud as PR speak without really showing anything tangible.

Emma, nobody's doubting the X1's capabilities of outputting games at 1080p native and running them at 60fps, the problem is, the X1 has a hard time of doing so.

Devs have to either cut graphical fidelity to do achieve 1080p 60fps, or cut resolution or performance to keep the flashy graphics. Most devs prefer to cut performance and resolution before ever touching graphics, the great thing is and they didn't have to cut much from the PS4 with TR.

This is what you get when a hardware company designs a gaming console around tips, suggestions and technical needs from the top game developers themselves.

The PS4 is laser focused on one thing, being able to run games extremely well for the consumer.

It's pretty damn obvious, and I bet will continue to show, that it's definitely the definitive gaming machine.

People can talk about exclusives and launch games all they want, when games are running a lot better on one machine than its direct competitor it's continually damning to that box's capabilities; especially for a new, more expensive, next gen system.

Infamous Second Son will be the exact same and don't forget this is running at 1080p as confirmed on 20th February 2013 at the PS4 console's reveal.
Sucker Punch have had lots of time to optimise and actually use the extra 4gbs of graphics Emmery added to the console since they started development.
Now, how many games on Xbox One since launch run at 1080p and a framerate of over 30fps? Dead Rising is a perfect example of a messy last gen game with unimpressive textures that runs at 720p and still suffers at slowdowns to 20fps. Does that not in itself explain to you the differences in PS4 and Xbox One? Do you need any more proof or does the "let's wait and see" phrase that people like you have been saying since the leaked console specs in Nov 2012 still hold up?

It's a sigh of relief that both consoles are being pushed to their limits and one not being held back by the other. Considering the Tress-FX which puts down most of the high end PCs, the extra added next-gen effects, lighting and physics, running at native 1920 x 1080 at 60 FPS it is a technical avhievements even for high-end machines ( you can bring your Alienware or Origin quad SLI Titan + 64 gigs of RAM which you can only see in your dreams or fairly tales, we are talking mainstream here, check Steam polls, most of users are stuck with GT 9800 which i used to have before my old HDD was fried). Good news that PS4 version is NOT being held back graphically. A good game is a good game regardless but it makes sense to push each platform to its limits.

It must be clear to all now that PS4 is more powerful - but both will do an amazing job with next gen games.

I could not tell you what fps or graphical technology my fave games on the PS3 were. I didn't care because they were great games. They were also pushed to their limits at the time.

I think we will get this fuss about games for a while because of all the 360 versions of multi-platform games that were slightly better looking last time around due to it being the lead platform for the developer.

What goes around has come back around. But from a PS4 owner I wish only great times ahead and awesome gaming experiences for ALL new owners of XB1 and PS4. We are gamers first!

This is why it's important for the PS4 to have solid sales, because if the XB1 was beating the PS4, devs would focus more on the XB1 version and the PS4 version would be gimped and would run well below what it can handle.

Cause while not as extreme as last gen, that was the case with the 360 and PS3. 360 got all the love and the PS3 got the neglected versions of games, even though it was more powerful. But when devs focused on the PS3 version first and foremost and 'ported' to the 360, both consoles got the best quality possible for them.

So if the PS4 keeps getting the sales love, both PS4 and XB1 get the highest quality versions possible. Because devs make the best version on the PS4, then dumb it down however much is required to run on the XB1.

PS4 winning sales and popularity = best for everyone. XB1 winning and taking popularity = only good for XB1.

Emma, there's too many Sony fanboys everywhere. The PS4 is outselling the X1 and X1's are in stock almost everywhere while the PS4 isn't and whenever there is a new shipment of PS4s, it's gone in less than a day.

Know what this tells me? The PS4 is just more popular than the X1, of course you're going to see more Sony fanboys than X1 fanboys. And many people were soured by the X1 over the previous year that it's hard for many to be neutral.

Even if people have gotten over the X1's horrible lead up to launch, there's still a ton of bad news coming for it almost every week. It's not like people are just going to overlook the fact that one system is inferior to another. I know a number of people who are enjoying the X1's games a lot more than the PS4's, but they won't stop talking crap about the X1's multiplats sucking a lot more and how they're gonna buy them all on the PS4.

As a Sony fan I can honestly say that the difference between 60fps and 30fps on a game like Tomb Raider won't make a great deal of difference to the end-user experience.

It doesn't mean the PS4 version will be more fun to play, however it does yet again prove that the PS4 is more capable/powerful console.

If you have an XB1, enjoy it. It is by all accounts a very good console, however if you start saying that:

a) The cloud gives XB1 an advantage over PS4

b) The Xbox is more "balanced" making it more powerful than XB1

c) Microsoft's "superior software" makes up for the hardware advantage of PS4

d) There is a hidden secret weapon hidden in the Xbox that is yet to be unlocked

By now everyone that knows anything about hardware knows the PS4 is more powerful. The evidence is overwhelming. However that doesn't mean that it is a better console choice for everyone. If you love Microsoft's exclusive titles, having a more powerful console that can't play any of those exclusives isn't going to make you happier.
Some prefer the Xbox because of Kinect and the voice activation, and although I don't understand that myself, I can respect diversity and individual choice.

Both sides need to calm down. Microsoft fans need to think before they talk utter BS about their system being on par/superior power wise and Sony fans should be more dignified and understanding of others purchasing decisions.

I'm not so surprised. Microsoft has been warping people's perceptions of gaming and this industry for years. You can see it in the boasting of non-gaming features as things that supposedly make the Microsoft console superior this time.

The kind of audience they were going for with the Xbox One is a carefully constructed one. It's the living room, the family, the non-gamer before any other. However, I still don't think the family demographic is tagging along quite so well as when they introduced the Kinect last gen. There are better and less expensive alternatives in a number of different regards.

If this is true, then this is getting ugly for the X1. It's unacceptable that a new console can't handle games at 1080p/60fps as a norm.

Unless Microsoft releases juggernaut exclusives like GTA/Read Dead or something similar on their console, no way in hell I'm purchasing the X1. Halo is a big game, but I'll never buy a console simply for a FPS. Yes there are few X1 exclusives that i would like to play, but nothing that really justifies the purchase of a 500€ console.

At this moment the X1 has very little value for me. I'm curious to see what X1's sales are going to be a year from now, when the initial hype for a new console fades away

I'm a PC gamer and even I don't see it as that black and white. It's always about trade offs on consoles. If you demand all games be 1080p and 60fps all that means is that the games will have significantly inferior visuals than they would have otherwise.

Most games on the PS4 are 30fps anyway, so I don't know what you are comparing it to. There isn't any console that runs all games at 1080p and 60fps.

Even this game, Tomb Raider, isn't truly 60fps on the PS4. Much like KZSF or Need for Speed Rivals (before the patch), it has a variable, uncapped framerate that swings around and only hits 60fps part of the time. You can see the judder in the gameplay video in the other article.

Xbox fanboys can't handle established facts, and trying and downplay anything and everything by calling out out those people using facts, as fanboys, rather than dealing with them. Instead, denial is a place they prefer to dwell.

They also can't handle the fact that Sony is in a better place this generation. That kinda sucks! I wanted a CONSISTENT experience. Say all you want about frame rates, but the best kind of frame rate is a constant frame rate that doesn't go up or down.

I want 30 or 60, but nothing in between. It makes for juddery stuttery game play when you get duplicate frames added into the mix. It doesn't make the game fun anymore.

This news may just turn me away from picking up the PS4 version.

I guess people don't know what judder is, so I'll explain it.

If the frames per second does not divide evenly into the refresh of the monitor, it has to make up for those missing frames by duplicating some of them which will make the image appear jumpy or stuttery.

For example. If you have a 60Hz monitor (most people do), you'll see 1 frame per screen refresh at a time. That would be 60fps. In a 30fps game, you'll see each frame twice, which will still result in smooth motion.

However, when the framerate doesn't divide evenly into the refresh rate, you'll get a duplicate frames sometimes and unique frames other times which can look like your game has small pauses each time you see 2 duplicate frames in a row.

NBA2K14 is just a simple basketball playfield and of course, you can get 1080/60 fps.

But Xbone version has worse AA than PS4 version.

The 10% boost is to get it up to 1.31Tflops of gpu performance. So there is still gonna be a 50% deficit on the Xbox One. Anything is better than nothing but even if the boost was completely correlated to frames, that would only give you 3 more frames. The PS4 would still be demonstrably better performance wise. There is no way for the xbox to make up for the 500 Gflop performance advantage the PS4 has without massive overclocking. And even then the xbox still be at a disadvantage. Its got as much to do with physics as it does math.

People like to rep the PS4 as the more powerful system... it just so happens that they are correct. Games will lokk great on Xbox... bu5 every multiplat should look better on PS4 because of the priorities Sony set when designing their machine.

Yes, of course a 10% improvement would help. You don't have to be a tech-guru to know that a 10% improvement will improve things. At my best guess, it would improve things by approximately 10%. You haven't specified exactly what you have have heard is receiving a 10% improvement, so whether or not it will improve things in the way you want it to is completely unknown, however, whatever does receive the 10% improvement will likely be slightly better at doing its job.

News like this makes it hard to justify picking up an Xbox this year. I picked up a PS4 first with hopes to pick up an Xbox this year when titanfall droped but my impressions from what I have played and articles like this make it less and less likely that will happen.

Only game Ive played on both consoles is COD Ghosts and the difference was quite obvious. The amount of jaggies on the xbox version (in my opinion) is unacceptable for a $750 console (New Zealand).

Also keep in mind Xbox in New Zealand has:
- No voice commands
- TV input does not work properly

I like how all the Sony fans downplayed 60fps, citing its only good for racing and FPS. But the second a PS4 game runs at 60fps over the XBO at 30fps, it gets used as fuel to crap on XBO.

Here's another interesting fact. If you had built a PC in 2006 and put a $400 GPU in it today, you'd be able to play this game at 90fps. That means guaranteed 1080p/60 mimimum on all the all the multiplats on PS1-4 and Xbox original through One.

Even though at first the title makes it out that this is a bad thing for xbox I personally see this as a good thing for the xbox. If a game such as this can get to 1080p/30fps then the likes of Call of Duty: Ghost can easily do 1080p/60fps, and the reason it isn't, isn't because the xbox can't do it (like some people tried to claim, at least as some form of victory) but because of launch window/time constraints/tools/drivers etc.

The games will get much better as the developers get more time on the system and the tools improve, this proves it, and I'm sure by the end the developers that came out and said the two consoles are pretty close in power will be the ones closer to the truth.

Good point. I don't know how the hardware resources are split across the game systems in either game (obviously), I was more going on texture resolution and dynamic effects like the vegetation/hair, I haven't thought about NPC numbers.

To me Tomb Raider looks a lot better visually in screenshots but I suppose games are a lot more than static images.

Yes, I believe the XB1 is suffering from launch issues and it is a little more difficult to develop for. But, this is really starting to look bad for Microsoft. I was fully supporting the XB1. I bought 6 games for it and only AC4 for my PS4. Now, though,I can't buy a multi platform game in good conscious for the XB1.
It's ridiculous that the XB1 is getting beat this badly at the start of the generation. The fact that it is $100 more is not the issue for me. I love the kinect. The issue is that I'm just disappointed that their focus on multimedia features distracted them from the real purpose of a game console.
Most of my friends are on the XB1 and practically none on the PS4. Looks like I'm going to be the new kid at school(PS4).

First the min is 30fps and I watched the hour and a half gameplay PS4 footage on Twitch last night with the producer and you can't really tell any framerate flucuations. At least I couldn't. It is a nice looking and smooth running game.

Due to recent driver updates and tress FX being horribly optimized at release (namely Nvidia cards), PC equivalent cards to the PS4 provide identical frame rates to the PS4 version on the highest settings (60 FPS). XBO has a weaker card than PS4 and its PC equivalent. Therefore, lower frame rate.

To be quite frank, I know a number of excellent games back in the day that were 60fps on Xbox and Gamecube but 30fps on PS2, but I still owned a PS2 and loved every game on it. It also succeeded as the best system despite of being the worst one technically.

I have never been an Xbox, or even Nintendo gamer for that matter... ever.

I've always had a Playstation, from PS1, PS2, PS3 and I've never been disappointed with Sony's content and dedication to meet the fans demands and satisfaction.

As a person who doesn't current have a lot of money to buy 2 systems, I was finally aiming to get an xboxone, just for a little change.

This definitely concretes my decision to stick with Playstation.

It seems like the hardware gap is bigger then the specs that have been revealed by both machines.

If the specs released were accurate, (PS4 still being more powerful), then the XBONE would still be able to achieve the same performance as PS4, just some graphic fidelity would be missing

BUT now with another game (first BF4 720px900p) Tomb Raider (30fps vs 60fps). If one console can handle 60fps and the other can't, this shows that the gap in hardware is much bigger then the specs released.

Honestly though, I still think 60fps is overrated. Having played FPS,racing, all sorts of games at 30fps and 60fps, it really does not have an impact what so ever, but just a 'tool' 'argument' used to fuel fanboy wars.

Oh yes it does have an impact....Timesplitters & Burnout were 2 of the greatest games in there genre (for me, they STILL are the very best in there genre)...Both made so great by the fact they ran at 60fps...and that was on PS2.... Also, Battlefield would be made an even better game if it ran at 60fps, just like COD...There is no doubt a game can be awesome at 30fps, but the fact is, 60fps in the exact same game, you notice the difference..... Theres no fanboy argument to it, it's simply facts....A 60fps game just feels smoother & just feels & looks far nicer...It even affects the way games handle & feel.....A 30fps game just doesn't move as fast & smooth, as evidenced with the way BF3 or 4 handle & move, as opposed to COD:MW2, or such... The speed of character movement & such are just superior, with the faster frame rate, same with racing games, the 60fps allows a better sense of speed.
