What you were expecting is almost impossible to achieve, in fact its impossible...
When a "500GB" HDD is manufactured it will tell you that on the box ("500 GB") and its in fact a 500GB, what the box do not tell you is that its an "unformatted 500GB" HDD, if you want to use that 500GB HDD you'll need to format it, and it actually becomes a ~465GB HDD, that w/o the OS or anything else...

OT: I cannot believe the OS + included apps takes around 90 GB of it, that's massive !

What you might argue is that when they tell you 500GB they are (conveniently) using the scientific notation of 1 Giga = 10^9 and not the one used in Computer Science (1 Giga = 2^30) (Every HDD is marketed this way...)

So, scientific notation:
500 GB = 500 * 10^9 bytes
To get the real value you divide this value by 2^30:
500*10^9 / 2^30 = 465 GibiBytes (gibi is used to know that 1k = 1024 instead of 1000)

Or you can see it this way:
Marketed:
500 * 1000 * 1000 * 1000 bytes
Computers see:
465 * 1024 * 1024 * 1024 bytes

And now I fly away leaving you guys a wall...

It's just the difference between GB and GiB. I'll switch from giga to kilo to explain the difference.

1kB = 1 kilobyte = 1000 bytes
1KiB = 1 kibibyte = 1024 bytes

So giga is decimal while gibi is binary.

Now the important part: The hard drive is labelled in gigabyte but most systems display the volume in gibibyte.

So when it shows 465GB it actually means 465 GiB which equals 500 GB.

As far as I'm aware, Apple's various OS's and some other do use the recent (and lexicologically accurate) definition of 1000 and refer to 1024 as gibi rather than giga.

It's really false advertising on MS's behalf if they use mixed standards.

Its probably all the software that comes with the OS. Not sure how much pre-installed crap they put on it but it seems like a lot. Sony also has a bunch of pre-installed stuff I wish I could take off but doesn't effect me too much. MS is 2x as bad though with the space management. Microsofts own website has a chart in the answers section showing what a unformatted drive is after formatting. The answer for the 500GB is 465Ggib in capacity. I 465gb-362gb=103gb No Microsoft operating system is 103GB Even the large ones fit on a dvd, some of that has to be pre loaded content, and or reserved space. Is it instant ads? An insane amount of preferred Apps? Surprise free games? Surprise free movies? A huge reserve to insure 3rd parties have what they want for content downloaded automatically? All of the above?

500gb hdd has about 460gb useable space. Then you take into account MS adding their OS on top of it. Its a heavy OS, but thats why MS needed their HDD to be upgradeable like the ps3/4

Actually, on top of that, there is something MANY people do not know about quoted hard drive sizes. It's actually funny that Microsoft is mainly a software/OS company and yet they STILL report the manufacturers quoted hard drive space. HDD manufacturers report HDD space as being 1000 bytes equals 1 Megabyte instead of the actual 1024 bytes equals 1 Megabyte. Continuing this real-world logic into Gigabytes would show that there is 7% less space than what is reported in a "500GB" HDD. The real world number comes out to 465.54GBs. So, a completely unused, 500GB hard drive only has 465.54GBs of real-world space. Then, you have the OS and other software and drivers as well as preloaded apps and other sectioned off space (maybe things like virtual memory for example).

PS4 has 409GB left after install and system patches. Must be the 3 OS's even though they are run in virtual machines you still need the OS files. Windows 8 must take a few gig, even stripped down.

Yeah, but that's not including game updates, DLC, and hardware updates. And seeing how devs seem to only be getting lazier and lazier as their quality standards dwindle further to reach that beloved fall release, we're looking at some BF3 situations where there's like an additional 10 gigs of patches to get the game at a quality level. Not all cases, but an increasing number.
With all that, i'm seeing more like 16 games and a little wiggle room for good measure. An external hard drive will be a necessity a LOT sooner than we hoped.

Go to setting > system storage management on the PS4, it tells you how many space the PS4 has, (it should have around 408 GB of free space for you to use); how many games/apps can be installed? that I don't know, maybe it has a cap on games/applications installed at the same time (just like the PSV which is 100 apps), maybe it does not, who knows!

You are missing one key point...there can be multiple users per system. So there could be a family of 5 that own one. Dad has 4-5 games he plays installed. Older son has a few games installed and little Timmy has a few kid games installed. Maybe mom has a bunch of casual stuff downloaded from the online store. This would add up fast.

I think X1 runs a windows Kernal OS and an Xbox OS. I think it has Hypervisor that seemlessly switches between the two. I could be wrong though.

So many hatred responses, so little understanding. That 90GB is not just the OS, it is "RESERVED"! That means that after you fill up the space you just used for installing games and other media, the system keeps that open for a working system.

For instance if you want to play a game without fully installing it, but just have it playable, it probably places it's files in this reserved space. If you stream a movie, part of the buffer probably goes into this reserve space. If they hadn't done this, the system would become buggy after you filled it up completely.

Now before you go "OMG I WANT TO SEE WHATI INSTALL!" or "THAT IS IMPOSSIBLE!", the very first xbox already used this system. It reserved a few GB's for game caching on it's hard drive, the first new game would overwrite the last played one, with 6 games maximally being "cached" on the HDD for faster loading. At the same time the system also reserved space for MP3's (Custom soundtracks) and saves. Each having their own partition.

So very likely that 90MB you are "Missing" is not filled up with an OS. It is reserved for the OS, non fully installed game installs where you cache from disk and other things like that.

They installed practically the entire retail and downloadable library, it seems.

It's important to note that MS and Sony report drive space via different mechanisms, as well. MS uses the 1024x1024x1024 method to calculate 1 GB, whereas Sony uses the 1000x1000x1000 method to mean 1 GB.

This means that the 362-365 GB that they report the XB1 has available actually matches the ~391 GB reported by other sources as the supposed available space.

I should add that, the GB calculation is the reason so many DF comparisons report the 360 install sizes to be "smaller" than PS3, throughout this last gen. In truth/actual bytes, they are almost always much closer to identical than the reported GB sizes are.

There was a big journalism outcry over Microsoft's Surface Pro not having as much available space as the Macbook Air for a while, as well... turns out they were basically identical, after you realized Apple was using the same "make the GB more" method the HDD companies use to bloat their numbers, and MS wasn't.

You cant swap out the XBOne HDD without voiding your warranty. XBOne owners will have to wait for the external HDD patch (which is supposedly coming sometime in 2014)

Still makes no sense at that size. It is using Windows 8 but not the full thing. Would be more of a streamlined version just to run apps. Then the gaming OS like a 360. And an extra one to connect the two for switching. Shouldn't be taking up anything near 40-50gb. The only reason I can think is they allotted space for future updates that cant be used, and some for the DVR.

That or tons of spyware :D

I will never have 20 games installed on my machine at one time. The only games I keep installed are arcade games (which is no where near 20) and frequently played retail tiles (which is like maybe 3 at a time) Going by this vid, I will never fill my HDD. I never even filled the 250gb HDD on the 360 slim. My PC has a 500gb HDD, I've been using since 2006, and it still isn't full, because I clean out my files. You don't want to fill up your HDD, don't hoard every single game at once on your machine - it's called being reasonable.

20 games installed at once seems reasonable to me - I see this more of a problem of players not the hardware. Even if you argued that it's too small, when would it not be too small? 2TB's? Then what happens when that fills up? Is it still too small?

To a certain extent, the formatting and reserved boot sectors take a good percentage of any hard drive space. The difference with the consoles is they are also reserving scratch space, just looks like XBO is reserving a whole lot more.

With the 360, MS kept making a big deal about how "DVD is big enough, games won't use that much space". That is, until PS3 games started going past single layer Blu-ray and some titles started requiring multiple DVD disks. Since MS chose to do more conventional PC-like installs for the XBO, the games that are all starting to go north of 25GB rapidly fill up hard drive space. Sony already had this past experience, so it was a no-brainer to allow the gamer to swap out for a bigger hard drive.

The MS XBO storage situation is just more evidence of how short sighted the MS Xbox division has been when it comes to hardware. The XBO was essentially obsolete before it launched, using an obsolete data storage configuration, along with obsolete GPU, outdated RAM, and an overall hardware design that looks like it is a some kind of electronics box from the last century.

I supported M$ and have been patient with many issues but this is possibly the last straw for me. If M$ does not start giving substantive responses to address issues like this and Party Chat beyond Major Nelson's "it will get better" garbage I will return my XB1 soon.

M$ seems to treat their customers like chumps with a false facade of trying. I want details of progress and plans to address deal breaking issues. Is that too much to ask?

As someone who used a 20g hardrive on the 360 for 3 yrs this is just another reason not to buy an x-1... Sure they said they will enable external storage in a "future update" but they created their safety net with "future"... That update can happen in feb, june, or dec. of next year. Or the year after that...
i eventually had to upgrade my 20g hardrive with a discounted 120g because the games were getting bigger on the marketplace as well as companies implementing mandatory installs in order to play...now with these massive games being on bluray and most, if not all requiring an install, those 500gb is equivalent to having a 20gb hardrive 6 yrs ago...

And people that say having 20 games installed is more than enough don't seem to factor in the other stuff that you would need to install aside from the disk games...dlc, full digital games, movies, etc...they wanted to push this all digital world but didn't give consumers enough to accommodate...

Yes, it has been proven you can replace the hardrive but a lot of people will be afraid to void their warranty (as if that will last forever)...i guess people will need to be a little conservative with the stuff they choose to download for the time being.
