10 Reasons I'd Pick the Wii U over the Playstation 4 and Xbox One Today

This could have been Nintendo’s year — should have been Nintendo’s year.

And in a sense, it was Nintendo’s year, though it took some doing to get here. No one was supposed to buy the company’s shiny aqua-blue or whatchamacallit-black 3DS when it arrived back in February 2011 with a clamshell thud. Handheld gaming was doomed, proclaimed analysts like smug armchair oracles. Who’d want a bulky plastic pocket-brick that played games and games alone when they could play on their slender all-in-one smartphone — a device on which games exist in a kind of superabundant app-store-verse and typically sell for a buck or less?

Why I won't buy a WII U not enough New IP'S that.

TomShoe3789d ago

One reason: To prevent the proliferation of scalpers.

I'd rather buy an Wii U and go without a PS4 until 2015 than support a scalper. At least the Wii U has some great 1st party titles.

Catoplepas3789d ago

Sony certainly do.

3 new IPs from their first party studios this year alone. Exceptional ones at that.

Neonridr3789d ago

@Catoplepas - you mean next year right?

VforVideogames3788d ago

Nintendo article?? now there's something wrong with N4G.

PSVita3788d ago

WiiUs been out for 1+ years

Mr_Writer853788d ago

Knack, Resogun... And??

LOL_WUT3787d ago

Killzone? Not to mention better 3rd party support BF, AC, NB2K ;)

lilbroRx3788d ago

FIrst off that is false, they've had Nintendo Land and Wonderful 101 already without covering the eShop titles.

Second, that issue is even worse on the PS4/Bone

Majin-vegeta3788d ago

Should have added IP's that im interested in.

Beastforlifenoob3788d ago

There have been 8 games containing mario games in 2013 ALONE... If you say the issue is far worse on PS4/Xbox one show ME 1 SINGLE game character/series on either of the two consoles that has been milked for 20 friking years and has recieved more than 13 games in one year ALONE.

strigoi8143788d ago

lolz tell that to Microsoft i think they can relate to that

JetsFool35003788d ago

Same here Nintendo rarely has any dark gore type of games that'll attract a mature crowd... If I were to get a wii-u it'd be strictly for super smash bros & thats just for the nostalgia

Fanboyssuck273788d ago

Dark and gore doesnt equal mature. It just means that you have no understanding about gaming or your only 10 years old.

SegaGamer3788d ago

So are you saying "mature" people never played games like Mario and Sonic in the past ?

JetsFool35003788d ago (Edited 3788d ago )

@fanboy yeah dark gore doesnt equal mature but if they had more games like that they'd be doin alot better then they are now & I guess im sayin Nintendos style is too cartoonish for me

BISHOP-BRASIL3788d ago

You know what's worse than kids that pretend being too old to play Mario and such? It's old fellas that think everyone old enough should be paying reverences to Nintendo like they do.

We had seen this all the time with Wii, even when people were pointing crappy games for their technical flaws (mostly introduced by the less than optimal control method), Ninty fans tryed and pinned this stupid age stereotype all around.

No one is obligated to love kiddy games out of nostalgia. Some of us had moved on to "dark and gore", others will always love cartoonish games, other may enjoy completelly different stuff... This has nothing to do with age or gaming upbringing and its not on you to try and judge everyone else's taste.

Thing is that Nintendo makes new IPs all the time; more than even Sony; however, those games are so unrecognizably Nintendo that people don't know they're a Nintendo game.

moparful993788d ago

In the past 7 years Sony has created
Uncharted
Infamous
Resistance
Little big planet
The Last of Us
Journey
Flower
beyond two souls
demon's souls
heavenly sword
escape plan
motorstorm
gravity rush
fat princess
folklore
heavy rain
loco roco
mag
patapon
modnation racers
pixel junk
playstation allstars
puppeteer
soul sacrifice
starhawk
Resogun
Knack
the order 1886
tearaway
superstardust
sports champions
unfinished swan
white knight chronicles
drive club
echo chrome
Ni no kuni
rime

This doesnt include already established franchises before the PS3 like

ratchet and clank
jak and daxter
warhawk
god of war
killzone
wipeout
syphon filter
sly cooper
gran turismo
socom
ape escape
twisted metal
ico/shadow of the colossus
parapa the rapper
singstar
buzz!
everquest
dark cloud

This isnt all of them.. I'm pretty sure Sony has a distinct and clear advantage when it comes to sheer volume of new and existing ips...

andrewer3788d ago (Edited 3788d ago )

@moparful99 good point, but there's a chance Nintendo is going to start making new IPs for good, like that X game, or even Bayonetta' studio could be in the way of making more IPs to them...But one thing is for sure: It doesn't matter how old a Nintendo franchise is, it never gets old :P

zerocrossing3788d ago

@moparful99

I think you'll find the developers created those games, Sony merely published them.

Mr_Writer853788d ago

@zerocrossing

Sony own most of the studios that created those and they own most if not all of those IPs.

Those they don't own might not of been made had they not published them.

stragomccloud3788d ago (Edited 3788d ago )

@moparful99
Many of these are not even Sony IPs, let alone second party studio IPs. you have a number of titles in there that weren't even published by Sony, and are in fact, just 3rd party exclusives. If I included those, I could go on with many more Nintendo titles, but I won't. So here is a list of new NINTENDO IPs, some you know, many you may have never even heard of.:

Wonderful 101
Xenoblade Chronicles
Baten Kaitos
Pandora’s Tower
The Last Story
Wii Sports
Wii Fit
Wii Play
Mario vs DK
Soma Bringer
Legend of Starfy
Elite Beat Agents
Rhythm Heaven
Fluidity
Endless Ocean
Magical Vacation/ Magical Starsign
Excitebots/Excite Truck
Chibi Robo
Steel diver
Fossil Fighter
Art Academy
Glory of Heracles
ASH: Archaic Sealed Heat
Electroplankton
Drill Dozer
Art Style
Line Attack Heroes
Wii Music
Wii Party
Flingsmash
Disaster Day of Crisis
Captain Rainbow
Battalian Wars
Geist
Odama
Hamtaro
Meteos
Giftpia
bitGeneration
Art Style
Doshin the Giant
Cubivore
Zangeki no Reginleiv
Freshly-Picked Tingle’s Rosy Rupeeland
Zekkyo Senshi Sakeburein
Jet Impulse
Chosoju Mecha MG
Project Hacker
Pushmo
Freakyforms: your creation, alive!
Sakura samurai
Dillon’s rolling western
Kiki trick
Fortune street
Pokemon x Nobunaga
Denpa Ningen
Flametail
X-scape
Aura-aura Climber
Looksley’s Line-up
Crash-Course Domo
Pictochat/Swapnote
Master of Illusion
Flipnote
Hotel Dusk/ The Last Window
Another code/Trace memory
Warlocked
Takt of magic

And since you included established franchises that have existed for some time, let's let the good ol' ones out.
2D Mario
3D Mario
Donkey Kong
Legend of Zelda
Kirby
Starfox
Fire Emblem
F Zero
Mario Kart
Pokemon
Metroid
Game and Wario
Punch Out
Kid Icarus
Pilot Wings
Advance Wars
Pikmin
Golden Sun
Animal Crossing
Mother
Super Smash Bros(Nintendo actually has enough memorable/successful characters to make a successful line up, Playstation all stars pretty much proved how Sony has never really had any run away success with any of their characters. Not that all stars was a bad game, because it wasn't.)

Remember that Sony is a company that is run by businessmen, and Nintendo is a company run by game designers, programmers, and directors. Of course Nintendo will have more internally developed games. You'd have to be drunk on the kool-aid to argue with that. Though, N4G is the major kool-aid hub of the internet.

Point is, that people can go on and on with lists. But most of those titles I mentioned in the new IP list are pretty forgettable. Same goes for your list. New IPs doesn't necessarily mean good IPs.

That list is so full of filler.
I can do the same!

Beastforlifenoob3788d ago

@strag... Look at some of the series you have counted

1.) mario vs dk
2.)2d mario
3.) 3d mario
They are all mario they may be different games but not a different series... It would be as if moparful listed infamous and infamous blood festival as two different series... Also who the flip would consider "flipnote" a game are you deluded. Also many, mnay of the games you listed look like very short and casual indie titles (which arent neccasarily bad) but considering practically all of moparful99's listed games all have strong storylines, huge plots and amazing character progression they easily destroy many of your "games" that have a cube as the man character.

stragomccloud3787d ago (Edited 3787d ago )

You could easily subtract those and the point is still valid. That said, 3d platforming and 2D platforming are NOT the same, and are indeed different serious. Super Mario, New super Mario, and Mario vs DK. Though those series while they might share the same characters, only someone who has never seriously played these games would try to lump them all together.

Besides, the point of the post is not to say one company makes more IPs than the other, or has more universally popular IPs than the other. It is only that having many new IPs means nothing. No one is going to play every one, and we'll probably just play a handful.

moparful993787d ago (Edited 3787d ago )

@stragomccloud

Actually Sony owns each and every single IP that I listed

http://en.wikipedia.org/wik...

Scroll down to owned franchises and properties and look at the list. Alot of those I didn't list due to not being well known.. Tell me which IP's I listed were not Sony owned ips?

Sony used to own Crash Bandicoot and Spyro but now activision owns those so I left them off but are two iconic franchsises tied to playstation..

Im sorry but any Mario game with the name "Mario" on it regardless of genre is one IP. Just like I didn't post any of Sony's spin offs like LBP karting..

Again I reiterate Nintendo rest on its core titles and releases sequels and spin offs every year.. Sony invests heavily into building new IPs and they have a huge advantage in that regard.. Just look at the Last of Us.. Being considered by many as a Game of the Generation contender. When's the last time Nintendo released a new and fresh IP that gained that kind of recognition?

TekoIie3787d ago

So I take it that means you aren't buying a PS4 and an XBox1 either?

I have to respect a man who can sit out a generation, waiting for enough IPs.

Majin-vegeta3788d ago

Nope already have my PS4 given Sony's track record.I know i wont be disappointed.Xbone can hit the high way its a rip off.

stragomccloud3788d ago

@majin Vegeta, I'll definitely get a PS4 eventually, probably an Xbone too, for that matter; however, since I have a gaming PC, neither of those two systems really offer very much besides games that I can already play on my hardware(albeit not nearly as good-looking as my PC).

Only the Wii U offers a unique experience, and don't try to pretend that the touch pad is revolutionary, because it's half assing copying Nintendo. Just like when Sony put six-axis into the PS3 controller at the last minute.

I have WiiU and a Ps4 and I'm enjoying Nintendo's console so much more right now.

That's not to say that won't change, but with MarioKart, Bayo2, Smash and "X" just around the corner... well..

I'm rooting for Xbox, cuz they seem to be the underdog right now.

mcstorm3788d ago

Im the same as you only I have the xbox one and WiiU and I have Sonic Lost world, Pikmin 3, Windwaker im trying to get through and I also have a unopened Mario 3D world. At the moment im jumping between Lost world and Forza 5 and once I have finished one ill start Mario and move onto another game when ive finished that. For me the WiiU is a very under rated consoles and as im bored of playing FPS games yoy its been a nice change to pickup some of theses great Nintendo ips.

webeblazing3788d ago

How did u get over 30 disagrees from that comment

stragomccloud3788d ago

Easy, hating on anything positive regarding Nintendo, Nintendo hardware, or Nintendo software, is all the rage with the kids these days! Gamer no longer means: "one who plays video games."

Now a gamer is, "One who hates on all things Nintendo."

Didn't you get the memo?

Benjaminkno3787d ago

Probably because I prefer WiiU right now, even though it may not stay that way for long.

I mean, oh well.. fanboys will be fanboys

for we are many3789d ago

The article has valid points, you need to read it if you are still on the fence, but if you already have a Wii U and especially now with the release of Pikmin3 , WW HD, Wonderful 101 and SM3DW, you know that it Rocks! I am totally enjoying mine now and it's keeping me off Steam except for playing the newly released Deadly Premonition DC.

Neonridr3789d ago

I just got a PS4 last week, so sure, maybe I have been giving the old parallelogram some extra love, but it's a new toy to me, so naturally I am going to want to play it.

But I still have a huge backlog of games I have to finish on my Wii U it's ridiculous. Pikmin 3, Rayman, Wind Waker HD, W101, Lego Marvel Superheroes and SM3DW... I have no clue when I will find the time to squeeze it all in, but with just the Wii U alone, I know I have a ton of quality games there to play.

I only have BF4 at the moment for my PS4. I may end up getting KZ before the year is out, but I don't plan on buying anything else on the PS4 until Infamous drops. That will give me tons of time to catch up on my Wii U.

MsmackyM3788d ago

I'm pretty much in the same boat as you, I definitely have more games on the Wii U than I have time to play them. Right now the PS4 is mainly sitting dormant, the only game I've bought for it is AC IV, which I'm not playing since I still want to complete AC 3 on the Wii U. I know once MGS and Infamous release next year I'll be burning the candle at both ends.

objdadon3788d ago

Traded my wii u in towards my ps4. Mario and zelda was fun as a youngster but I outgrew those type of games. I play some mario kart on my 3dxl sometimes and probably will get smash bros for it. But the wii u was just collecting dust beside my ps3 and 360. It had to go.

grimmweisse3788d ago

So you outgrew platformers and adventure games. So everyone who still enjoys those kind of games are kids? Geez thanks!

I would understand if you said I outgrew or got bored of those series, but relagting whole genres!

KwietStorm_BLM3788d ago

He said he enjoyed them as a youngster, and he said exactly what you said, he outgrew them. He didn't say everyone who plays them is a youngster.

Metallox3788d ago

You should get another one this 2014, there are coming games like X, Bayonetta 2, Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze, Smash Bros, Mario Kart 8, Yarn Yoshi and even the possibility of games like the new Zelda, SMT x Fire Emblem and obviously, we should expect for new announcements.

bigrob9043788d ago

i will never buy another nintendo system ever, i'm still figuring out why so many people bought the wii. we have a wii, but that never gets used it just collects dust on the tv stand. how many times do they expect me to play a mario, or zelda game? i understand that these particular nintendo franchises have a huge following, but i would never buy a system just to play these particular games. as for the wii u it's just more of the same, releasing the same franchises, lagging behind in graphics and overall system quality. to me people on the internet can argue about nintendo system until they're blue in the face, but until nintendo becomes a better hardware developer and comes up with someone other that mario i'm done.

kwandar3788d ago

bigrob. Had a Wii, got used for first 2 years and then like everyone else we moved on to PS3.

Now this generation, we have a Wii U again. Why? Because it offers FAR more value, and there isn't that huge gap in video. Check out side by side comparisons with PS4 and yes there is a difference, but it isn't that much.

On top of that we get games like AC4 and Deus Ex that play BETTER, as a direct result of the gamepad.

The hardware differential you moan about just isn't there.

bigrob9043788d ago

@kwandar there is a huge gap in game visual quality, to say it isn't is to just not want to admit it. now some games like AC4 are not but thats just one game where visuals weren't the developers biggest concern as they where releasing on every console and just wanted to get anothe AC out. plus seeing as how the ps4 released a few weeks ago we haven't seen what the ps4, or xb1 for that matter is really capable of. plus Ps4 and xb1(to some extent) have second screen capabilities. sowith that said, nintendo's "next-gen" system has last gen graphics. they won't get all the third party support that sony or microsoft will. also how many times do they expect people to buy a brand new system to play mario, only hardcore fans are gonna buy it for that. i think it was a naughty dog developer that said they should just do software, and i agree. if they like making mario, zelda, donkey kong, and metroid so much then let them. i just wish they'll stop selling an inferior product and saying it's next gen when it clearly isn't.

Xbox's Preservation Step Sets A Much-Needed Example, Especially For Nintendo

Hanzla from eXputer inquires: "If Xbox can care about preserving its games and legacy, what exactly is wrong with Nintendo, trying to kill game preservation single-handedly?"

purple1015d ago

Ahh yes the good old game preservation of saving all your games to a removable hhd on the Xbox 360, taking it round your mates house, setting up multiple tvs to
Be met with “save data corrupted, please re download”

Or how about removing 360 games
From the store
, download them now or else, and, better hope to god that save data doesn’t corrupt, or it’s lost for ever

Nice one ☝️

Zeref5d ago

It's better than what Nintendo and Playstation is doing. It might not be perfect but at least they are TRYING. Unlike the others.

DarXyde5d ago

Trying? Take off the blinders for a moment, mate.

1. A failure to preserve games is just that: a failure to preserve games. Don't try to sugarcoat it: NO ONE is doing it properly. Better than awful is nothing to write home about.

2. At the time of this comment, isn't it the case that you need an internet connection to play Xbox games even if you buy physical discs that are hardly in circulation anymore? I don't have a Series X and I can't verify, but I think that is correct. I'm fairly certain you can at least play PS5 games at version 1.0 (not much of a win really when many games require day one patches). I think Microsoft's all digital, licensing approach is by far more aggressive than anyone else's. They really try to push you to game pass where you lose your entire library by umm.... Skipping a month of payments.

I don't think anyone is doing it right whatsoever. Don't get me started on Nintendo, who goes after anyone looking to preserve their games better than they ever would with extreme litigation.

Don't be a simp for any of these companies. Get it together.

PhillyDonJawn5d ago (Edited 5d ago )

@DarX never speak on Xbox again. You lost all credibility with your internet connection comment. Smh you have 0 clue and misinformed yet speaking on something you don't no squat about.

Einhander19725d ago

What has Sony done exactly? You guys keep deflecting to Sony but I am not actually seeing any results, and ai am certain nothing that you can come up with even comes close to what Microsoft has done and what they have tried and failed to do, like tie all your disks to your account on xbone.

Microsoft removed their whole indie section when they moved to the xbone because they were going to only allow games on the service that came from a publisher, id@xbox started after xbone launched and it only exists because Sony embraced indie and Microsoft was forced to cancel their plans and reverse course.

And every single game that was part of games for windows live including disk games (I have gta 4 on disk that won't work) so hundreds of games that use that DRM no longer work unless the company themselves patched it out which of course very few did.

MrBaskerville5d ago

Not trying. Tried. they killed of the backcomp program years ago. They set something up again, but sounds like it's more of an attempt to save the current library on whatever they are planning next. With luck they save everything and more, but let's see. I could see them killing off parts of the OG xbox and 360 libraries. Can't imagine that they would allow us to play Forza 5-7 in the future.

With that said, I do like what they've done and really wish they could have done more.

shinoff21834d ago

Zeref

So killing off physical media is trying what exactly. Ms don't really give a fk if you think they do your kidding yourself.

Profchaos4d ago

isarai5d ago

Is that why Hellblade 2 is digital only?

Zeref5d ago

Just because it's digital only doesn't mean you can't preserve it. Just put it on an external and you have the exact same functionality of what a disc does.

MrNinosan5d ago

Guess you're trolling, but if you actually think that's how it works, I'd recommend buying some braincells.

mkis0074d ago (Edited 4d ago )

Volitile vs nonvolitile data. A disc will not corrupt either. A drive can be corrupted.

Einhander19725d ago

This is just a scammy PR move to distract from the fact they are going digital only and trying to push streaming and subscriptions only.

No gaming company has pushed harder to remove ownership than Microsoft.

Without discs there is no preservation, preservation can't be done by the rights holders it can only be done by the consumers, anything else is a lie.

Einhander19725d ago

5d ago
5d ago
Zeref5d ago

Do you know you can put your games on an external and preserve them that way? There are no benefits to discs. ZERO. Idk why some of you are still obsessed with them.

DarXyde5d ago

Because games like Persona 5 exist. It's STILL V1.00. On Playstation, that's a win because 1.00 is installed on the disc—no need to download anything.

If a game does not require any updates, it's all on the disc.

Extremely low bar in the modern era, of course. It's not much of a win by any stretch.

But for now, physical media does have a purpose, at least on Playstation.

Einhander19725d ago

That is factually not how game licensing works, try plugging your hard drive into someone else xbox, It's not going to work, and it won't work if the licensing servers ever go down.

Einhander19725d ago

Anyone remember games for windows live.

I have around a dozen games, some on Steam itself that will not work because Microsoft shut off the licensing servers.

BehindTheRows5d ago (Edited 5d ago )

I do. I STILL have games (Gears of War being the big one) I cannot access because Games for Windows LIVE is total garbage and no one has held Microsoft accountable.

Zeref5d ago (Edited 5d ago )

You don't have an Xbox apparently. Because you can 100 percent plug in your external and play games from it on any Xbox console lol. You just have to be logged in to prove ownership.

Chevalier5d ago

"You don't have an Xbox apparently. Because you can 100 percent plug in your external and play games from it on any Xbox console lol. You just have to be logged in to prove ownership."

Damn how many times do people got to explain your idiocy to you? You can take a copy of Persona 5 like someone used as an example and play that game on ANY console WITHOUT logging in which means I can lend the game to a friend without internet and they can play my game. Can you lend your hard drive to anyone without logging in for them to play? NOPE. That is a huge difference and if you think otherwise then sorry you're an idiot.

Tacoboto5d ago

"No gaming company has pushed harder to remove ownership than Microsoft."

Ubisoft is literally erasing games people bought from their libraries... My PS1-3 discs are useless on modern hardware. Nintendo's re-published and resold almost their entire Wii U library, and the eShop is completely dead with no BC mechanism in the Switch software. Microsoft publishes everything they make today day one on Steam and Xbox/Windows. Sony only brings to PC the titles they think you might want some years later and Nintendo won't even design a functional long-lasting joystick.

You're absolutely trolling and not serious if you think Microsoft today is the worst offender.

shinoff21834d ago

Yay steam

Not everyone fks with computers though. The disc is still the best way as a console player. Period.

Tacoboto4d ago

How do Sony and Nintendo feel about these discs from 2001-2013?

Don't be stupid, you know Xbox is the best at this today.

Nobody wants this. Sales or the lack of it in the case of XBOX is very telling. I wonder how the adorably all digital series X will fare. Adorably dismal perhaps?

crazyCoconuts5d ago

Only time will tell, but for from someone like me suspecting that Xbox is trying to gracefully exit the console market, that "forward compatibility" team is trying to get Xbox games playing on Windows PCs. I mean, it's nice that they're not planning on exiting with a "enjoy your games while the hardware still works" message, so that's nice. They still have a brand to protect via Microsoft so probably feel obligated to have a better exit strategy.

Xeofate5d ago (Edited 5d ago )

That is not their plan, their plan is to transfer users accounts to the cloud.

Phil Spencer himself said as much a few months back, plans could have changed but I think people are reading way too much into one statement where Phil said he would allow Epic on xbox because he wants to be able to sell xbox games directly on other platforms. Aka, instead of selling Sea of Thives through PSN he wants to have an xbox store to sell his games on PlayStation without giving PlayStation any money.

Again, it's extremely unlikely that Phil plans to put PC on xbox and licensing would prevent them from just giving out other publishers games purchased on xbox copies of thier games on PC, Microsoft does not own their games.

crazyCoconuts4d ago

The thing that doesn't align with the cloud strategy is the giving up on exclusives. You'd still need strong exclusives for cloud streaming - it's still a "platform" , just with a lower upfront hardware investment. I feel like they've learned what PS learned with PSNow long ago. We're not ready to stream games and it's only gonna lose them money to try at this point

FinalFantasyFanatic4d ago

I would love that, I'd buy up some of the Xbox games if they could run on PC, like the Rare Replay, Lost Odyssey and Dead or Alive Ultimate, probably a pipe dream though.

Looking Ahead: The Lingering Questions About the Next Mario Kart

VGChartz's Mark Nielsen: "10 years. It’s been almost 10 years since the last mainline release in the Mario Kart series. Mario Kart 8 came out for the Wii U in 2014 and became the best-selling game for the system by a sizeable margin, and later pulled the same magic trick on the Nintendo Switch under the stage name Deluxe. All in all, it's sold nearly 70 million copies over the last decade and is still selling like hot cakes to this day, so it’s no wonder Nintendo has been in no rush to replace it. However, with rumors of a new system being just around the corner, and reports a few years back that a new Mario Kart is indeed under way, it seems the era of 8 might very well be drawing to a close. It’s an exciting prospect to be sure, but after two Nintendo systems with Mario Kart 8 at their heart, a lot of questions remain about how Nintendo will choose to follow it up."
