New Interview with Microsoft's Xbox Division in France sees Hugues Ouvrard, Marketing Director for Xbox France claiming that Xbox One is more powerful than PS4, and that there's some confusion over pixels.

The PS4 isn't more powerful. There is a confusion about the number of pixels but the definition of some is set by editors, not by the console. Well played George. I've seen some spectacularly ridiculous comments on this site, and some of them come from more prolific zealots than yourself so it's easy to forget about you at times, but then you come along and vault yourself back into the limelight with a gem of a comment like that.

When I look at MS and some of their fans, I'm reminded of the immortal words of Obi Wan Kenobi : " Who's the more foolish, the fool, or the fool who follows him? ".

I'm going with the fans, because MS has to know they're full of marketing. I'm not talking about the fans who love their MS exclusives and don't mind the compromises that were made in the name of multimedia/multitasking. If reviews determine who has the best games, then PS4 wins by having higher scores overall for their launch titles, and yes, indies and multiplats count as games. As for power, PS4's advantage has been well documented for months. Forza being "only possible" on XB1 is a joke. I'm pretty sure if MS had some secret sauce cloud power they'd have clued in developers well before now and we wouldn't see the differences we do, especially in a game like CoD. I doubt DR3 would have framerate issues if they could dunk it in that secret sauce. I doubt Forza would have 2D spectators instead of the 3D ones that were originally shown if the fabled cloud computing was a factor. Hell, Forza's backgrounds in general wouldn't look so dated if cloud power was a thing.

Like Lukas said, accept and move on. Be happy with your purchase and what it does instead of trying to exaggerate it's capabilities.

I mean everyone can see how over the network clustering computing can help your system in certain computing tasks. Like Grid Computing, but trying to imply or to claim, that it can increase performance of the system on a Local level as if it was networked like a Beowulf Cluster, is really a pretty big Stretch.

Microsoft may be able to fool some people, but when network ISP's Bandwidth is not really fast across the board, your never going to get the speed and level that they are trying to imply, unless your system was direct connected in the server room with servers.

Performance will be constrained, never mind the problems with old electrical wiring in your house, combined with signal collision's.

Heres a funny thing about cloud computing and the internet.
I have 40 mb broadband which works out at 8ish megabytes at my end
Connecting to lasvegas I have about 10 mega bit or about 1.2 mega byte.

Now if a server I want data from is giving me it at 1 mb a second it would take 512 seconds to load a film of 512 meg. Thats ok on youtube cause it buffers it.

If ms decided to cloud compute the lighting before the race. That means that you have whats called prebked lighting or static. That data has to be held in ram the entire time ok so 512 ram os used for prebaked lighting bthat reduces the avalible ram for rendering.

If they decide to calculate it via cloud dynamicaly you get a much more complicated situation and a digital conversation many times more complex then what follows

Xbox . Cloud I have sun st 8oclock trees obscuring road and a green car.
Cloud replys illuminate oixals as follows 11312445456......
Xbox cloud rain with a tunnel coming up 3rd person view red ferrarri. ..
Cloud pixels 13742747723727......

And it goes on and on as the conversation continues more and more data is cached to disk and ram in case its needed . Now the onboa4d gpu can step in and answer some things but if its meamt to take orders from the cloud then its gonna guess.

If more data is handled by the cloud then multiple threads of conversation occcur .

Cloud processing is best used for not time criticle tasks or to stream fully. As latency and other issues build up as the data pipe gets full

My example while simple is how it would be handled . Prebaking is better but detracts fr9m full systems and can lead to a canned feeling like prebaking ai responses which wojuld be a terrible idea

Until Microsoft can prove to me that the Cloud can actually improve graphics, then I won't believe you. Especially after hearing Forza 5 uses the Cloud but the crowd are N64 style paper cuts of people. Every time Microsoft trumpets "the power of the cloud", I can't help but cringe and feel sorry for them. And when(not if) Sony gets in on the cloud computing game, they'll have the same advantage Microsoft has but with a much more powerful console to take advantage of it. When that happens, the spec difference will be even more pronounced. I wouldn't be surprised if, within a year, we're already seeing a massive migration of developers to PS4 just on the sheer horsepower advantage alone.

Edit: And why would I wanna play a system in which the standard new gen definition, 1080p, can not be accomplished without outside help and being connected to the internet 24/7? If, say, the games were 1080p native and they used cloud computing to up the framerate and AI algorithms, I'd think it'd have some merit, but as it stands I believe the whole cloud thing is just Microsoft's attempt to slide the always online thing in under people's noses.

I have a question.......well, maybe it's more of an observation.

For the 7th gen, it was the PS3 that had more games that used dedicated servers for gameplay. Games like MAG, RESISTANCE 1, RESISTANCE 2, KILLZONE 2, WARHAWK, STARHAWK, DUST 514, DC UNIVERSE, and others.

I remember that XBOX 360 fans said they didn't care, and some even claimed that dedicated servers weren't important at all.

Gakai is streaming a gaming library rewritten for x86 architecture.

Cloud Processing require even more attention and servers to be able to do all those calculations. You can't have Gakai cloud streaming and cloud computing. It's too much for one service.

y u ask i bring up internet speed?.. because there are two main challenges with cloud computing "latency and bandwidth" Latency is going to affect how immediate the computational requests of the cloud can be. When a game needs something processed, it sends a request to a server and waits for the reply. Even assuming instantaneous processing thanks to the power of the servers, the internet is incredibly slow in terms of real-time computing. A request from your console has to find its way through numerous routers and servers until it reaches its destination, and the results have the same labyrinthine journey back. To put this in perspective, when the logic circuits of a CPU want some data, they have to wait a few nanoseconds (billionths of a second) to retrieve it from its cache. If not in cache, the CPU has to wait as much as a few hundred nanoseconds to fetch the data from main RAM - and this is considered bad news for processor efficiency. If the CPU were to ask the cloud to calculate something, the answer won't be available for potentially 100ms or more, depending on internet latency - some 100,000 nanoseconds!

As a game has only 33 milliseconds to render a frame at 30FPS, such long delays mean the cloud cannot be relied upon for real-time, immediate results per frame. If you crash your Forza car into a wall, you don't want to see your vehicle continuing through to the other side of the scenery for the next three or four frames (even longer on those inevitable internet hiccups) until the physics running on the cloud return with the information that you've crashed.

What this means is that cloud computing cannot be used for real-time jobs.What it could be used for though are large datasets that are non-time-critical and can be downloaded in advance to the HDD. in short.. the same thing the ps4 can do..

You have read way to many threads by 14 year olds that think they know networking. Yes there is latency and their is bandwidth.

1. Latencies have been dropping like a rock and will continue to do so as fiber optics become the standard. I can ping any server I want from my connection and I never get a ping time above 12 ms. That means 6 ms to the server and 6 ms back. Now they do something at a server farm called distributed processing. This means that many servers process a part of the computation you have requested. So something that may take one server 100 ns to do only takes 10 ns over 10 servers. This server network also automatically scales to demand so if a computation is particularly demanding it can be split between a 100 or a 1000, I am just throwing out those numbers as examples as the requests from a single console won't even use up one server's processing. So my requested computation takes say 5000ns that is 5ms. With a ping time of 12ms + 5ms to compute my console has received processed data in 17ms. This is absolutely possible right now and is done daily in the engineering and business world.

2. They are not off loading the full rendering of the image to the cloud. They do not have to offload full image rendering to the cloud. They can offload jobs that are not latency sensitive but do need lots of cpu/gpu computation. Things such as static or very slowly changing backgrounds that do not need to be computed every frame, AI, Audio, etc. All of that stuff uses compute and if you are doing it on the cloud you have all of those compute cycles free to do the latency sensitive stuff locally.

3. Then you can assign computation to the cloud for things that you don't need right away. The console can request for something that it does not need for 5 or 10 seconds and storage the cloud computation for later use as needed.

Just how do think that Sony is going to implement Gaikai for backwards compatibility for PS3 games?

My last post on this. But 12 ms to any server either very lucky or any server only counts usa. You are right about how patency works and some other stuff but how long does it take to send 512 meg of data your pings are 32 kb of data im on 40mb fibre and 9ver the ocean to vegas I get maybe 2-3meg thats due to routing tables servers and other internet traffic. Anyways its not latency thats the issue as you said prebak8ng stuff is always an option but it takes longer to load as load then has to incorperate reciving data from server.

A unchharted 3 level was about 150 meg at any one time maybe more
Streaming that would take about 50 seconds at 3 mb speed yes gpu can offload and such but if gpu is calculating stuff while waiting for cloud to tidyit up whats the point in offloading to the cloud.

Simply put other then for multiplayer mmo stuff and full steeaming contained processing is better for now.

the problem is with this claim is the fact it ISNT an always online console.
if the cloud was this amazing tech(which it could mkae a difference).

More and more I want to actively avoid ever buying an Xbox One on principle the more they spew this nonsense. They are acting worse than Sony did in the Ken Kutaragi days at this point.

At least the PS3 technically was superior. Honestly just stop and rethink your marketing approach Microsoft. And not just for Xbox, but across the board. The Xbox one is futur tech while the ps4 is just 2011 outdated and cheap piece of hardware. The only thing that keep the ps4 on par for the moment it's because some studios develop their games with old engine. It will become more obvious with the 2nd and 3th wave of games, the ps4 wont be able to keep up. Geez devs are already force to lower the texture and put fog in the distance to insure the 1080p. It will probably be the last consol for sony i really doubt they will survive this gen.

Even if the cloud was the greatest supercomputer cluster the world has ever seen, Xbox One consoles would not be able to leverage any of it for better graphics.

You average internet connection = 10 Mbit/s
DDR3 = 68GB/s = 557056 Mbit/s

As you can see if the DDR3 in Xbox One is 'slow' and having to be helped by ESRAM, then there is really no hope for the 'power of the cloud'.

It's like trying to transport oil from Russia to England through drinking straws.

So what I'm getting is the XBOX One can't do all it's computing without the cloud system because a 50gb Blu Ray disc can't hold all that uncompressed data like HD sound and HD graphics. Maybe this a conspircy to feed into the BS that Microsoft cloud is better for you to download games and steam them.
