Does Kinect 2 Fix the Original's Problems? | IGN

IGN - "We've put in some quality time with all sorts of Kinect 2 games. Here's what we think."

Eonjay3816d ago (Edited 3816d ago )

Kinect's problem wasn't its ability to detect motion or ability to read your pulse. It problem was that it wasn't fun to use in games. Its not the gaming innovation of the future and it isn't even necessary to play games.

Does Kinect 2 fix that?

abzdine3816d ago

problem with kinect is that it want to do everything at once.
I would rather focus on one or 2 things and do them right.
I like the Move because it does the 1:1 tracking well, focusing only on arms movements.
Sports Champions was insanely precise, Killzone 3 does the same.
Of course games are important but if the tech is broken...

shaun mcwayne3816d ago

Im not defending kinect, but I did have fun with the kung fu high impact game,
Should have been an Arcade title.

I also liked the kinect features in mass effect 3, but i dont think its worth it just for those things.

Gazondaily3816d ago

Kinect 2.0's other supplementary features are what really have me excited.

Things like:

* more comprehensive gesture control- minority Report style

* Voice control- the Kinect has some amazing noise cancellation/voice isolation tech. Just coming how, crashing on the couch and saying Xbox On will be so cool.

* Profile recognition- playing killer instinct with your mates and you hand over the controller to them and it loads their profile. It almost sounds too good to be true. That is brilliant use of the tech

* Facial mapping: importing a 3D model of your face into a game will be brilliant.

* Heart-rate monitor: Survival horror games could employ this brilliantly.

There is a lot of potential for this tech. Lets hope the tech works as well as MS say it does.

arkard3816d ago

@Septic

There is a reason hospital equipment still requires it being hooked up to your skin somewhere. I guarantee the heart rate monitor will be a gimick

nukeitall3816d ago

@arkard:

the heart rate monitor doesn't need to be accurate as long as it is proportional i.e. that it measures relative amounts.

@shaun mcwayne:

I had a blast playing Kinect Sports and Dance Central. I hope we get more games like that as well.

Boxing games like Punch Out would be awesome.

I also like the idea of Xbox Fitness and Skyping with a friend.

UltimateMaster3816d ago

It works better, but they don't want it either.

Yes it defiantly improves upon the issues present in Kinect however as they mention, we still haven't see the 'killer app' for 2.0 and it's still hard to justify paying the extra money for.

DEAD-DEVIL-DISCO3816d ago

was there ever a killer app for the first kinect? i honestly dont know cause i bought it for my 6 year old and he gave up on it rather quickly. im not burning on it or anything cause people that like to dance seem to dig it. but i dont dance !!!

pompombrum3816d ago

Dance Central? Facepalms incoming!

DEAD-DEVIL-DISCO3816d ago

lol i guess hangin out with some chicks shakin their ass why you and your buddies have a beer would be fun. kinect ftw lol

nukeitall3816d ago (Edited 3816d ago )

There was, but it was flying under the radar.

Kinect Sports reportedly sold over 8 million copies. The last figure known for Dance Central was hovering around 3-4 million for the first two games I believe.

That is more than some hardcore games do.

MrCastle3816d ago

The killer app is the free fitness app for a year. Mark my words boys, this will sell. Much like the wii fit craze.

DestinyHeroDoomlord3816d ago

It's problems weren't technical, not having good games was...

Ketzicorn3816d ago

Yeah a lot of the first Kinects problems were technical. Trying to get it to pick up body movement, positioning it appropriately, etc. I'm 6'2" and I always had a hard time getting it to track my movements consistently in games.

Ashlen3816d ago (Edited 3816d ago )

They didn't actually show video of anyone playing it. When I have seen people actually play it it still looks like it has about a second or so of lag.

Shaolen3816d ago

For the size of that thing, they should have added a co-processor with it's own memory to give it an edge over the PS4, you know, to give people a reason to have it. Like the great, great, great grand kid of the 32x. Oh well, chance missed.

tigertom533816d ago

Kinect 2.0 measures in at 9.8″ x 2.6″ x 2.63″ (Length x Width x Height).

The Kinect head (the rectangular part) is 11″ x 2.5″ x 1.5″ (w x d x h) and add the base which is The base is 3″ x 3″ x 1.5″ (w x d x h).

so Kinect is not that big compared to its brother the microphone makes it look that way but they did that to improve the audio pick up and any noise from the cpu fan in the back. yes it does have a co processor for the visuals and xbox one has it own dedicated audio processor for kinect and games..

Rolling the Dice: Do Modern RPGs Miss the Point of Team-Based Play?

It seems it was long time ago. A bunch of friends spending hours on end playing RPG games, sitting around the table with the box of cold pizza. Excited about the story, listening to the Game Master, they were completely engaged in the worlds only visible to them and their imaginations.

The GM is the programmer, and in MMOs and co-ops, you can play with others. If you want to ONLY use your imagination for the visuals, read a book.

1) Hope they put it on disc this time.
2) Hope this is a positive for Neptune coming over as well.

Demons Souls5064d ago

If so, that's being developed & published by Idea Factory. Compile Heart has nothing to do with it (Thank God for that).

Godmars2905064d ago (Edited 5064d ago )

Thought Compile Heart was one of the companies lending characters.

Was also speaking in general as in regards to a US of Neptune. If these guys are offing a second game, NIS or Atlus, both of whom offer quirkier titles, will put that one out.

@kagon01:
My issue isn't - wholly - with the DL-only option, but the price. The first game should be $30. Maybe $40, and by that I mean $39.99. The only reason its $45 is the 360 disc version which has extras. Nevermind that by all rights its a PS2 game. Something that proabbly could have been done if the devs had the GOW2 engine or tools.

ClownBelt5064d ago

I approve of this god damn message.

Could have gotten my 60 bucks if they just put it on a disc.

Another exclusive damnn the ps3 keeps on rollin wit games awesome ;)

Jack-Pyro5064d ago

Is this a half decent SRPG, porn aside, cause if it is, i might just decide to go and buy it for the 360.

Anon73495064d ago

There's no porn just some sexual innuendos but that's it.

Also it is a great game by itself, maybe not graphically but everything else is top tier.

RedDevils5064d ago

so it had some kind of "top tier" porn story jk

ThanatosDMC5064d ago

Yup, it's a decent game. I just hate that a move has to go first before any attack options.
