Albert Penello Told “You Don’t Need to Know” on Call of Duty Ghosts Resolution on Xbox One; Explains

The saga of the resolution of Call of Duty: Ghosts on Xbox One and PS4 continues, after yesterday evening Sony Computer Entertainment Vice President of Publisher and Developer Relations Adam Boyes revealed that the game will run at a native 1080p resolution on PS4, while the pixel count on Xbox One is still a mystery following unconfirmed rumors that it’ll be 720p.

Today Microsoft’s Director of Product Planning revealed on NeoGaf that he did ask the executive that runs third party relations at Microsoft about it, but he was simply told that he doesn’t need to know. He also explained what it means, and mentioned that he'll be "bummed" if the rumors are true.

I'm getting a XB1 but really?
this is a 'need to know' basis? oookay.

cleft53829d ago (Edited 3829d ago )

Albert Penello has really been doing a bad job as the PR guy for MS.

Looking at the footage of the new CoD game for PS4 I can't really imagine it not being in Native 1080p on the Xbox One. So I really don't see why they just don't confirm it or say ask the developer the way Yoshida did. This just makes me think that CoD isn't 1080p Native on Xbox One. If this game can't run 1080p Native than Microsoft has a serious problem.

Drekken3829d ago

Albert Penello is doing just about as good as he can do with the product he has to represent. The only thing worse he could be representing right now is Obamacare.

Abriael3829d ago (Edited 3829d ago )

To be fair, doesn't doing (arguably) a "really bad" job of PR mean that he's probably just honest?

I can and do respect that.

Eonjay3829d ago

Give Penello a break though. How do you run PR for a console in 2013 that can't run the a title as weak as COD in 1080P. That is almost indefensible for a console's whose top preordered game is COD. A disaster beyond comprehension. So Penello is doing a great job actually.

Gazondaily3829d ago

"Albert Penello has really been doing a bad job as the PR guy for MS. "

No he's not. he's being as transparent as he can be and I welcome that instead of the constant spouting of generic statements.

What do you want him to do? He CAN'T even give out the info, he just told you why.

pedrof933829d ago

@Abriel

But at this point, he could simply contact someone at Activision.

joefrost003829d ago

Correct me if im wrong but didn't yoshida tweet that activision will let you know
And if a game being shown on a certain system don mean its better on that system think about madden the only nex gen footage we have seen is from the X1 version
Didnt eurogamer confirm call of duty back in june was 1080p 60fps on both console
Besides looking at that ps4 footage 1080p didn't reLly help it any
Also obamacare is lack of information
If people.would.take time and read.it and not go off what certain people tell you on TV I find it hard for anyone to criticize it

Saviour3829d ago

Albert already told them to ask Activision, but they still asking again n again. A CoD true fan don't care abt rez, these are more likely trolls who'r asking.

LightofDarkness3829d ago

But he's been told he's not allowed to know. Asking someone at Activision will yield the same results.

I MUCH prefer his honesty and transparency. Saying "he's not doing a good PR job" is effectively saying he's not lying to you enough. I wish more people in this industry were like this; he's giving it to you straight, with as much info as he has available to him. I'd never disparage someone for their honesty like that.

torchic3829d ago

given what he has to work with, Penello is doing a decent job. it's pathetic that in 2013 a brand new console isn't running games at native 1080p. a day at work for the poor guy must be equivalent to climbing Everest.

the problem with Penello was his initial foray into GAF where he decided to speak up in defense of Xbox One specs. now he has created a culture for himself where he's forced to defend the hardware in X1. he shouldn't have touched that issue, rather focus on X1 positives

badkolo3829d ago

joefrost , hard to criticize forced healthcare that cost more with higher deductibles then before??, no thanks,

ElementX3829d ago

I think he's doing a good job. He's asking questions and reporting what he finds. I mean he's doing the best he can with the information he has.

mistertwoturbo3829d ago

You know, in retrospect Penello is nowhere near as bad as the likes of Aaron Greenberg or Don Mattrick. I'm pretty sure if Penello worked for Sony he would have a much easier time.

J-R3829d ago

If the Xbox One can only run COD: Ghost at 720p that may be the reason we are seeing a lot of the footage of the game being done from a PS4. The HD videos that IGN has been posting lately have all been from PS4.

badz1493829d ago

if the rumor is false, it's fairly easy to shoot down by official words from either MS or AV themselves just like how Adam Boyes confirmed 1080p for the PS4. the words are there and there shouldn't be anymore speculation.

however this Xbone 720p rumor is yet to be denied by officials but instead, what we got were "looks fantastic" which is highly subjective disregarding the native res and now "you don't need to know" thrown at Panello by the face! with Ryse toned down to 900p, KI running only 720p (it's F2P so there's that) and rumors of DR3 struggling to maintain 30fps, MS should have known better about the importance of shooting this rumor down for good!

it's not like CoD suddenly became the most wanted game of next gen, (I'm not gonna buy it EVER) but looking at the PS4 footage which are already confirmed to be 1080p/60fps, the game clearly lacks fidelity of next gen material and looks more like this gen material TBH but somehow the Xbone is rumored NOT to be able to run it at 1080p?? it's no longer the question of how crappy the game looks but rather how crappy is the spec of the Xbone itself.

no matter how you see it, it's not looking good for MS, not AV! after all the talks of "the power of the cloud" and stuff, this is the last thing they want to happen!

extermin8or3829d ago

@Drekken: obama wants millions of americans to have access to free healthcare and that's bad?! Not his fault the opposition prettty much shut parts of the country down by refusing to cooperate over a deal todo with finance's and a plan. (think that was the issue)

SilentNegotiator3829d ago (Edited 3829d ago )

Penello has taken pathetic to a whole new level. 720p/900p COD Ghosts on Xbox is now confirmed as far as I'm concerned.

@extermin8or

What's bad isn't that they're trying to make healthcare more accessible. It's bad that they're (1) forcing people that don't want it to pay up to a $1000 fine/annual, (2) forcing people to pay maternity/child care in their personal policy (they're trying to fix the healthcare disparity by subsidizing a highly profitable industry - massive logic failure there) whether they're single, gay, castrated, impotent, etc or not, (3) doesn't fit into our budget (hint: the shutdown happened because our budget was messed up, not because "the opposition" refused to agree on a budget - it was because they didn't want to agree on making the USD even more worthless by printing more money).
...I could puke at the amount of ignorance from both sides on the affordable healthcare act. But that's what happens when you force a gigantic bill through before more than 12 people get a chance to analyze it.

scott1823829d ago

It will be 1080P on the Xbox one. Seriously there is no reason for it not to be, X1 is plenty powerful. I don't see it ending up less than 1080P...

christocolus3829d ago

@cleft5

c'mon dude albert is a great guy and he has been as open as he can be..cut the guy some slack.if this one(cod:ghosts) doesnt hit 1080p and its sequel (which obviously will be alot better looking)does, wouldnt it confirm the fact that this title had already gone too far using the earlier dev kits and hence the devs couldnt re-code in time for launch?...its what devs have been saying..they got dev kits late and the drivers also are not near final..it shouldnt take anyone with some commom sense to know that 1080p isnt an issue for the xbx one..if youve been reading articles online you would have figured this out.devs who have the recent kits are actually seeing the difference..its just unfortunate that some games have gone too far already using the old kits..im not trying to debunk or confirm the rumor all im saying is we should wait to see how games coming out next year will fare...though imo 720p and 1080p still aint a big deal to me cos it doesnt change the basic gameplay experience of the game..just ask the casual gamer and he will tell you they all look same to him or join a match online and ask gamers currently playing cod what they feel about this and they will tell you same thing..when i bring this topic up when playing with my friends they actually call me a geek which i aint and its all because majority of gamers dont give a damn about all that crap.they dont even know there is something called 1080p..all they know is that it looks great on their flat panel hd tvs..

wsoutlaw873829d ago

@silent the government was shut down as a method of extreme people in the republican party to try to force congress to delay the health care bill a year because they dont like it. People are out of work because a group of people are mad that a law got passed. This isn't the place for this discussion, but it drives me crazy when people go around complaining about who ever is the president or things like the health care bill when they dont know the first thing about it and just go off some obviously biased "news" channels or super pac commercials. You need to understand why health care is so expensive and rising way faster than any thing else. You are already paying for anyone that doesn't have insurance because hospitals need to make a profit. Please just actually read something before talking, no matter what you think about it. The bill has a ton of flaws but the shut down isn't helping them and is childish.

Anzil3829d ago

@Abriael your saying hes being honest? lol you xbox fanboys will say anything to convince yourselves haha. He said "you don't need to know"!!!!! this is bad PR period at least sony fanboys have a reason to rally even if they are most of the time ridiculous but the excuse after excuse is getting old and frankly your pathetic...xbone might have good games coming to it but man was it a massive screw up from start to launch. MS Screwed up and your doing the absolute worst thing you could for the xbox brand and eventually even you will dislike microsoft if not xbox......get it together your worse for the industry than mobile and cod itself

Gamingisfornerds3829d ago (Edited 3829d ago )

@ anzil, cleft and all the other idiots that can't read: I'll modify the text for you so you'll understand as well:

Today Microsoft’s Director of Product Planning (ALBERT PENELLO) revealed on NeoGaf that he (ALBERT PENELLO) did ask the executive that runs third party relations at Microsoft (SOMEONE ELSE) about it, but he (ALBERT PENELLO) was simply told (BY SOMEONE ELSE) that he (ALBERT PENELLO) doesn’t need to know.

Got it?!

bakasora3829d ago

Jesus Christ joefrost00 I don't understand any of it.

Palaven3829d ago (Edited 3829d ago )

LOL @ the people who can't even read the article properly before raging about Microsoft in the comments.

Where is the part that confirms CoD isn't 1080p on Xbox One?... There isn't one.

Drekken3829d ago

@extermin8or - OMG. You are the reason we are in such trouble. People like you, the uninformed, are dangerous because they say stupid things like " Obama wants to give free healthcare to millions of Americans" with conviction.

I am not going to get into a political debate here, but Obamacare is not free heathcare. He is forcing everyone in America to buy insurance. Because of this policy insurance rates are skyrocketing, deductibles have gone up, and hundreds of thousands have lost their insurance policies. While all of this is going on the main way to sign up for Obama's "free healthcare" is broken. I would like to know though... how the hell could you consider his "free healthcare" free when peoples monthly rates are doubling and deductibles are as high as $11,000.00. What is the point of healthcare if you have to pay $11k when you need it? Get informed and talk to some responsible, job holding adults before you start talking about things you are clueless about. I will tolerate you and your kind telling lies about game consoles, but I will not listen to your crap about politics.

amiga-man3829d ago

He is correct, I don't need to know because I'm getting a PS4.

Bobby Kotex3829d ago

Seriously, that was a YES or NO question and he couldn't answer it, so I would assume it's not 1080p.

hakeem09963829d ago

Dude is doing a great job .He is right COD is not an XBOX ONE product ,it is an Activision game 720p or not who cares ,It's Activison's question to answer, and it's on them if the product is subpart although i don't see Activison making a 720p and a 1080p version of the same game knowing that it would cause conflict and a dip in sales .that's just bad business. they will both be the same version

Death3829d ago

If the upscaler outputs the game to the tv at 1080p, is there really a big differance? I do understand that upscaled is not the same as native, but if it's not enough differance to see unless you count the pixels or freeze the image and compare them side by side, what's the big deal? Way too much focus on pretty and not enough on creating new or better experiences. If pixel count is what you are after, buy a PC.

SilentNegotiator3829d ago (Edited 3829d ago )

@wsoutlaw87
"the government was shut down as a method of extreme people in the republican party to try to force congress to delay the health care bill a year because they dont like it"

So the expenses of the healthcare act has nothing to do with the fact that we hit a budget crisis? Believe it or not, without making the USD even more worthless, we couldn't afford everything in the Healthcare act at all, and that's part of the reason there was a problem. You can't fault politicians for voting in a way that tries to stop things that they disagree with and push things they agree with; that's what politicians do (until you disagree with them, I guess).

"but it drives me crazy when people go around complaining about who ever is the president or things like the health care bill when they dont know the first thing about it and just go off some obviously biased "news" channels or super pac commercials. You need to understand why health care is so expensive and rising way faster than any thing else. You are already paying for anyone that doesn't have insurance because hospitals need to make a profit. Please just actually read something before talking"

I am informed. 99% of people have no idea about the idiotic maternity/childcare requirements for EVERYONE, for example.

Me paying a MUCH larger premium for maternity care and childcare has nothing to do with fixing the costs that we pay for when hospitals don't get paid; it only helps an already very profitable industry become more profitable.

Fining people for not being able to afford healthcare (even with subsidies) does not solve that problem either.

You probably think I'm against the healthcare act entirely because I'm aware of massive flaws in it. You already implied that I watch FOX. Maybe you should stop looking at everything in black and white like the politicians causing these issues.

Redgehammer3829d ago

So far I have found Mr Penello to be forthcoming and honest. I have appreciated his candor, and his attempts to fight against a backlash that I found to be biased and unfair on many levels. Did MS make some mistakes? Sure. Did they climb through anyones window and abduct their child? No. Still to this day, I have found most of the seriously biased stuff from all the usual suspects, in all the usual places. I am for buying what you like, and what you feel best represents your gaming habits and lifestile. The PS4 Sounds great for a Sony product. If it had Samsungs name on it, I would be way more apt to give it my money. To you Day one people, Kudos.. i hope you have fun, fun, fun!

tigertron3829d ago

It would be good if Activision actually came out and confirmed the resolution.

As for Obamacare or whatever, I don't claim to understand the details as I'm not an American, but wouldn't it be great if you all stood up to these insurance crooks and demanded free health care? it's a basic human right and we have free health care in the UK, it's paid for by the tax payer. It's not perfect - it has many flaws, but our health care system is the envy of the world.

JBaby3433829d ago

@ Drekken, Silentnegotiator, and others who know how to think and not follow blindly: I appreciate your efforts but don't try to educate, talk common sense, or discuss economics with Obama followers. They cannot seem to understand even the most basic of principles in these areas. They cannot fathom why you can't just print more money or take it from everyone else as you please. They see no problem with raising the debt ceiling, increasing taxes, increasing spending, and other destructive acts. I still haven't figured out if it's the school system or the individual at fault.

People need to stop thinking the parties are working for them. They aren't. Every side is serving themselves. They are all corrupt. What sad state America is in.

OT: There can really only be one reason that MS responded this way. Time will tell what the resolution is come release day.

ramiuk13829d ago

exactly, big problem because it isnt even good looking imo.
sound, animations, movement identical to all other cods,
infact if it was labeled as DLC for ps3,xbox360 i would believe it i think.
yet other games i can tell there is a graphical jump.
even on ps4 it looks current gen

scott1823829d ago (Edited 3829d ago )

@JBaby343
"They see no problem with raising the debt ceiling, increasing taxes, increasing spending, and other destructive acts"

And is anyone dumb enough of think that any of this was any different with a republican at the helm? At least President Obama (respectful way of referring to the US leader) is trying to figure out a way to get care to people who can't afford it, perfect or not. I will pay money to help the less fortunate out. Greedy, rich fat cats should be willing to do the same.

JokesOnYou3829d ago

This is stupid have you seen COD graphics, they arent anything special over current gen, so why wouldn't it be 1080p?

Gamingisfornerds3829d ago

Apologies to cleft5.

Unlike anzil and others, cleft5 did actually understand the article.

JBaby3433829d ago (Edited 3829d ago )

@Scott: You must have only read the first paragraph. We have many problems both sides have caused in various ways. Obama is singled out now because he is the president now. George Bush screwed things up in his own way. So did Clinton. I don't know anyone who is against helping people in need. What people don't like it being forced to give without any ability to control what happens to what they "give". We didn't need socialism to improve healthcare. It will only make it worse.

Don't fall into the "rich fatcats" garbage either. Class warfare is not the answer. You could tax everyone who makes over a million dollars a year at 100% and it wouldn't cover the deficit for one year. It's not the fatcats. It goes much deeper than those few.

P.S. I didn't disagree with you :)

Sono4213829d ago (Edited 3829d ago )

How are Xbox fanboys not understanding? Like seriously? Your confused on how we come to the conclusion of it being less then 1080p.. really? Well let me break it down for you

1. In previous call of dutys Microsoft's consoles have ALWAYS been the console cod was showcased on.. now this gen it's PS4. The thing is Activision and Microsoft's contract hasn't ended or anything, they're still partners.. as a matter of fact it was just renewed like.. a year ago? So there's one reason.

2. In the article they directly say that this information is being kept private.. just click the think you'll see it yourself, but why is it being kept private? They (AV) confirmed it's 1080p on the PS4.. so why not on the Xbox One? The console of the company they are partnered with? Shouldn't they be trying to advertise their partner more? Sure AV is teaming up with Sony when it comes to Destiny.. but as for Call of Duty Microsoft and Activision are still hand in hand.

You fanboys seriously need to wake up.. in what way do you see this pointing to it being 1080p? The spin is strong with this one.

Anarki3829d ago

You don't need to know about this resolution so please buy our inferior product, ok?

rainslacker3829d ago

I actually wonder why people don't just ask Activision directly. It is their game after all. If Activision isn't willing to disclose that information for whatever reason, then there is no reason to assume that MS would be allowed to disclose it.

Otherwise, I like Penello alright. He seems like he wants to do a genuinely good job. It's like the people at my work that I manage. If they try hard and seem like they want to do well, I am a lot easier on them than those that don't.

BattleAxe3828d ago

Albert Penello actually seems like he's a guy with integrity. He's been trying to find out what the real comparisons are for Xbox Fans, but he's being stonewalled by the company that he represents.

jackdaddy3828d ago

Yet still the xbone wise monkeys will defend it.
This console is not fit for next gen, it's not even on the same level as the PS4, not even close!
Does that make me a fanboy and a troll? i don't care lol, i'm not the one who is going to buy a overpriced, under achieving tv box. COD cant even run at 1080p native? if this is true, this M$ piece of crap is doomed before launch lmfao.
But it does have Ryse and a Camera....... :/

Hitman07693828d ago

@cleft5 exactly. Forget about the COD Graphics for a second and ask yourself this:

Is Microsoft being sabotaged from within? Why is Penello still making awkward, negative headlines? The guy seems incompetent.

I asked Aaron Greenberg but I do not expect a reply...

MajorMayhem703828d ago (Edited 3828d ago )

@Drekken
Or even worse, trying to convince America that the republicans has their best interests at hand.... Not even Jesus could pull that one off.

Keep being ill informed by watching Fox News. I don't think they believe half of what they say.

My main problem with the Republican Party is that for a country like the great U.S of A. that is soooo diverse, yet that party doesn't seem to represent the diversification. Not just race wise, but even women in the party. You have a bunch of men (majority Caucasian) that want to tell women what to do with their bodies.
Next point. They hate Obama soooo much and yet Obama beat them twice. Why did they lose? Cause the party is out of touch. Why do I know that? Cause the party believed they lost cause the candidates weren't conservative enough. Really?!? How about that party is toooo exclusive. That is why they lost and will be beaten again by Hillary come 2016.

Eonjay3829d ago

Penello is a great guy and he is really too honest sometimes. The problem is that if the Xbox can't render native 1080P, this is a disaster. Call of duty is a weak game graphically. There is just no way.

xXxSeTTriPxXx3829d ago

I think this is some kind of pubicity stunt on activion and M$ part, because they is no way in hell that the xbone can't run this in native 1080p.

I'm not getting a xbone but the game is hideous even in 1080p so xbone should have no problems running this at full resolution.

And if it can't omg if it can't.

warczar3828d ago

Penello is trying to Jedi mind trick us... 1080p is not the resolution you are looking for... you can go about your business... move along.

kparks3829d ago

I agree wtf is goin on @ m$ if it runs 720 who cares come out and say it or say currently its at 720 but our goal is 1080 they need to stop with there stupid PR BS!

devwan3829d ago

He's the main PR guy, he's got literally 1000s of people hanging on his every word... but sure, he doesn't need to know.

It's that balance thing again... balance between facts and secrecy. Keep a secret and people will hang on, keep their pre-orders and hope for the best. Admit the truth and... whoa, wouldn't want to upset that balance, you don't need to know... there there...

n4rc3829d ago

He doesn't.. And either does anyone else!

Its all getting ridiculous at this point.. Since when does all this matter? Why now are we arguing over any obscure technical aspect instead of just talking about the product we get in the end?

Its all for this bullshit fanboy war.. the public doesnt need to know every detail abiut development, especially when the info is only going to be used to talk trash to another group of their customers..

More should follow suit.. Stop feeding into this crap.. Microsoft doesnt disclose 3rd party info.. End of fkn story.. If it really was an issue, dont you tjink theyd be announcing nba2k was 1080/60?

But they didnt.. Because they dont disclose info on 3rd party games even if its good.. They let companies speak for their own product

devwan3829d ago (Edited 3829d ago )

@n4rc A BS fanboi war? You seem genuinely hurt and upset, it's just games consoles.

What people have issues with is there has been all this playing down the performance difference yet, if we're to believe the strong rumours, the same game from basically the same engine on similar type hardware is pushing less than half the pixels. That's big news.

http://bit.ly/H6ZDhO

warczar3828d ago

@ narc

hate to burst your bubble but this isn't some obscure technical aspect, if it were you wouldn't see the resolution listed on every t.v. you buy. In fact 1080 has been a selling point for t.v.'s for about 10 years now so I think it's about time that our video game consoles take advantage of it.

True_Samurai3829d ago (Edited 3829d ago )

Ikr! Son I'm investing into your console. Dont make me make myself become accustomed to the ps4

But I'm still on the edge of how the other game are 1080p 60fps. So cod is probably the same as ps4 version but not really a big deal or difference

True_Samurai3829d ago

Aw poor pope :-'( you used your only bubble. Thank goodness I don't care about Lil 13yr olds like you

FlunkinMonkey3829d ago (Edited 3829d ago )

"You don't need to know"?!!!

Who the f*** does he think he is? I NEED TO KNOW.. you know, just incase i spunk my months wages on the machine you are trying to sell me.

What a joke, and what an arrogant, clueless company.

Skanks, the lot of them.

IcicleTrepan3829d ago

He doesn't need to know because it's not for him to tell people, it's for Activision to tell people.

devwan3829d ago

@Icicle and you can bet your life if it was 1080/60 HE'D KNOW.

badkolo3829d ago

wow , you didnt even read the article did ya. troll much

shadyiswin3829d ago

if youre only getting an xbox one for call of duty,i much prefer you get the ps4.

FlunkinMonkey3829d ago (Edited 3829d ago )

badkolo calling ME a troll, well that is something special.. Take a look in that broken mirror buddy.

Yes i did read the article, and i think it's complete BS.. Wouldn't surprise me if he made up this quote to save face.. why have Sony had no problem answering? Why is everything that MS should answer straight forward shrouded in mystery? Why never a straight answer?

They continue to clutch onto their MicroStraws and either lie or try cheap tactics to reel clueless folk in.

Mirrors and Smoke (MS)

@shadyiswin

I'm not getting this regurgitated, sorry excuse of a game thanks, but this is a great indication of the future of multi plats, no?

ramiuk13829d ago

its as simple as this.

if it was native 1080p they would say it is.
there is only 1 reason a company would say no comment or u dont need to know and that is if it was under that.
the difference between cod and bf is huge, scale, graphics, audio totally different.

so i accept the sub 1080p res as they havent had long to get it on console and new tech etc.
but a game like cod has to be 1080p as its nowhere near as demanding as any of the BF series(no matter what console,pc)

BABY-JEDI3829d ago

What is so difficult with informing people about the resolution of a game on a console? Gamers deserve to know so that they can make an informed purchase!
MS really should get their act together. Did anyone experience the likes of this on the Xbox 360?. I don't recall anything like this.

sephiroth4203829d ago

so long as it looks and plays better than the last COD, does it really matter what the resolution is?

ado9083829d ago

Lol that's the problem, it doesn't look any better than the last COD

Cryptcuzz3829d ago

The problem is, if it is not native 1080P and the PS4 version is, it is telling how the X1 is compared to the PS4 in terms of future multi-platform games.

Think about it, COD is a huge franchise (I don't play it much since I suck at it) and if word comes around to the millions and millions of people who will buy and play it with their friends that the PS4 is the better version, it could lead to a lot of people switching to the PS4.

Of course not just this one game will do that, but it could be the start of that trend and be imprinted into most gamers mind whether true or not. Same thing happened to the PS3 this gen, but with PS3, it did have the horsepower to show for itself that it had the best looking games via its first party games.

The other problem is, Penello has to know what the native resolution would be for COD on X1. Ask Activision for the answer? Why? When Boyes from Sony could confirm what the native resolution for COD on the PS4 would be. So both high executives from both parties, but only the one from Sony is in the know?

Think about it, MS should come clean and just say it. Being silent about it is only going to make it worse. You say resolution doesn't matter, but with a multi-platform game it should matter, since the consumer should have the right to know all the facts and be able to decide which version is best for him/her.

Yes it do! I can play 720p res on my ps3 or xb360. I don't need to pay $500. for the same res as my current connsole.

Elsupacabra3829d ago (Edited 3829d ago )

Bob...Man, that's like saying, "I'm going to eat some shit today, but you know, I don't really like the taste of it"

walkincarpet3829d ago

I'm also going X1 at launch because their exclusives, controller, multiplayer gaming and kinect out weigh PS4s graphical edge, but if X1 can't handle 1080p on a crappy game like COD Ghosts then I have to ask how did MS screw up their console so badly when everything else is better than the competition?

HugoDrax3829d ago

Funny you say that, because Forza 5 is 1080P 60FPS is it not? Also Microsoft will be showcasing Battlefield 4 live on XB1/XBOX Live on November 1st. If they are willing to do this live, I'm sure COD Ghost will be the same on XB1&PS4.

I have my X1 pre-ordered and paid for, but this news is an issue if 720p is true for the game and not good for M$ hardware.

He could simply call someone at Activision. Or say that Ps4 simply is more powerful and ask to stop the comparisons.

Or simply stop replying to people, instead of replying to simply say "We don't now".

mhunterjr3829d ago (Edited 3829d ago )

If you read the article, you'd understand that isn't his relationship with 3rd party devs. There is a MS employee who knows, but panella isn't privy to the info, nor would it be disclosable if he was.

MS saying the PS4 is more powerful would 1) certainly NOT stop comparisons, and would 2) be a ridiculously stupid business decision. It's pretty silly of you to even suggest it.

The backlash is just as laughable as the fact Activision is having trouble with the Xbox version. If the media asks a question and MS doesn't answer, they are ridiculed. If MS is asked a question and does answer, they are called liars. They are damned either way, apparently.

And before anyone responds with "well, who's fault is that", note that I'm not implying MS is blameless (they brought it on themselves, surely) I'm just noting how ridiculous and unnavigable things have gotten for them. What happened to objectivity?

Hicken3829d ago

That somebody else knows and he's not the designated person is irrelevant.

The point is that it's not that hard for him to find out, and that this has become a big enough deal that he NEEDS to know; since he doesn't know, apparently, that means he NEEDS to find out.

n4rc3829d ago

A big enough deal to who?

Sony fans on GAF and n4g? Lol.. Not the end of the world

mhunterjr3829d ago (Edited 3829d ago )

@Hicken, you seem to not understand the basics. It's Activisions call. The game is not pressed yet. Obviously they won't reveal the final resolution, until they are sure of the final resolution. If anyone knew for a fact , inside of activision, that it would be locked 720p, they certainly would have said so, but it remains a work in progress.

PS how do you know how hard it would be to find out? Secondly, as he stated, if he did find out, it wouldn't be his call on whether or not to reveal the information.

Hicken3829d ago

So an exec at Sony knows- ostensibly because somebody at Activision told him- but they're keeping that info from the people at Microsoft? Does that make sense?

You say it's still a work in progress, so Activision isn't yet sure... there's a problem there, don't you think? The game'll be out in less than a month, and you don't know what the resolution is gonna be on one of the consoles? Framerate I could understand, but resolution just seems like one of those things that gets locked down as early on as possible.

It's a big deal because it's one of the year's biggest launches. It's an even bigger deal because we're talking about one of the launch titles for the next generation of game consoles.

The negativity surrounding this is bad for both Microsoft AND Activision. I can't imagine they'd WANT such bad news hanging around, so I don't see how they'd WANT to leave people with an answer as insufficient as "I don't know."

Hell, at least say you're looking into it, even if you know full well you can't be told yet. Then, when news IS available and you let people know, they at least THINK you made the attempt.

But this is none of that. This is, like so many things next-gen-Microsoft-related, poorly handled, at best.

ziggurcat3829d ago

@ mhunterjr

It's a month away from launch. The game's resolution was established a looooooong time ago. They don't decide right before pressing the discs what the output resolution is going to be...

mhunterjr3829d ago (Edited 3829d ago )

@hicken

1) the people at sony were informed, obviously because they've locked the ps4 version at 1080p already.

2) there IS DEFINITELY a problem wit the fact that this isn't locked at 1080p already. When did I suggest there was no problem? But the existence of this problem doesn't change the fact that panella has nothing to announce yet.

3) the negativity IS bad for MS and Activision, but their options are limited. They can either a) announce it at 720p and give up on making the game as good as possible b)announce it at 720p, keep working on it, and risk losing sales despite being able to get it to 1080p before launch c) announce it at 1080p and risk coming up short and creating a bigger backlash or d) waiting to make an announcement until they have finalized the resolution.

Obviously, the best (ethical and economical) option is to wait until they know for sure and allow the developer to make the call. This is EXACTLY the same approach Sony took.

4) he DID look into it, and he he gave every indication that he WILL present the information as soon as he can. But he simply cannot. He's been nothing but upfront about the entire situation.

@ziggurcat

A resolution isn't something you just decide... They code with a target resolution in mind, but they are limited by the performance of the system, their engine, and their code. No doubt they "decided" to get 1080p on the day they started brainstorming the game, but as of yet, haven't been able to achieve it at 60FPS, which they have always said, in their philosophy, is more important than resolution.

MasterCornholio3829d ago

Wow this is just sad.

If it was 1080P 60FPS he would just say it. There's no reason to hide this type of information unless the 720P rumors are true.

All Call of Duty Games Ranked from Worst to Best

BLG writes: "Call of Duty has to be the most recognizable franchise on the planet. They didn’t get that way by only making a handful of games.

COD has a long and storied career. Launching as a PC WW2 first-person shooter, Call of Duty has gone through numerous makeovers and been on just about every system. The series has gone through some serious highs and tragic lows. I’ll be looking at each Call of Duty game, the good the bad, and the ugly."

Vanguard better be at the fkn bottom. Can’t believe ppl haven’t eviscerated that game with all its lacking

Minimoth793d ago

Yeah, it's close to the bottom. There are a couple of worse ones. Infinite Warfare definitely deserves its place.

KyRo793d ago

There's a number a lot worse than Vangaurd. It's also a lot better than that car crash Treyarch released before it.

XbladeTeddy792d ago

World at War is my favourite. Didn't know the N-Gage had a Call of Duty.

MadLad792d ago

Same for me.
I was never huge into Call of Duty, but I sunk a lot of time into WaW.
Both the campaign and the multiplayer are on point. Wouldn't mind a remaster.

I quit on CoD for a long while. Though I'm the odd man out that actually really enjoyed the campaign for WWII, being I got it through Humble monthly way back when.

TheLigX792d ago

I really enjoyed the Infinite campaign. Multiplayer... not so much.

Yppupdam792d ago

I agree, The Infinite campaign feels more like it's own thing that they slapped the CoD name on. If it stood on it's own, (sans the CoD name) I think it could have been it's own scifi franchise. And a damn good looking game, to boot. I never bothered to play the multiplayer.

victorMaje792d ago

MW 2019 apart from the desastrous file sizes is way better than AW.

MadLad792d ago

That was one I grabbed for Playstation because it pretty much just came out during the Redbox purge of videogames, and I got it for dirt cheap.

It was great coming home to an update every night, and watching one game eat up almost half my console's memory.

Amplitude792d ago (Edited 792d ago )

Will get disagrees but Infinite Warfare campaign was really good. Decent story, set pieces were amazing and if it didn't have the CoD game on it I'm sure people would have been more into it. Advanced Warfare was alright too. Titanfall 2 was just 1000 times better than both but I enjoyed them for their campaigns. I literally barely gaf about the story I'm in it for the set pieces and 5 hours of being stoned watching cool nonsense happen if I'm in the mood to play a CoD campaign. If I'm looking for a deep plot I'm gonna go somewhere else.
Ghosts was the worst story-wise though lol that cliffhanger ending was so bs.

Also MW 2019 was sick and is one of the best CoD games in yeeeears not sure why it's so low on this dude's list. Campaign was great, multiplayer was great and Warzone was fun for a while. Over it now but shrugs.

Beat the Vanguard campaign too but I can't even remember a single thing about it other than that it felt like it was 45 minutes long. Might be the most forgettable thing I've ever played lol just fully erased from my brain

Price to performance, reputation, and if the Last of us 2 and Ghost of Tuishima reviews well Sony will have the advantage at launch. Not to mention all they need is one big exclusive at launch. Spider-Man 2 or Horizon would be a perfect launch title just saying. If they can sell this thing at $399 or $450 it's a win.

CaptainCook1492d ago (Edited 1492d ago )

Meanwhile, Gears of War 5 Multiplayer will be running at 120fps on Xbox Series X. Confirmed by Digital Foundry.

I'd choose Framerate over loading times anyday

dantesparda1492d ago

Yuck, GoW5.
And of course Gow5 can run on sX at 120 frames it was design to run on xb1, a 1.3TF machine. Unimpressed!

CaptainHenry9161492d ago (Edited 1492d ago )

Have not been interested in Gears since the early and mid 2000s. It feels stale and old to me now. Good game back in the day though. I could have played Gears 5 in that framerate with my PC so what is your point?

PS. What makes you think the PS5 can't run games in 120fps?

neutralgamer19921492d ago (Edited 1492d ago )

captain

i can say for certain both console will be able to do 4k/60FPS or a bit lower res at 120FPS

I just don't want anymore 30FPS games

henry1916

price will be a huge factor especially if one console is $499 and the other is $399. It's about initial momentum and market share. Demon souls remake will launch with ps5

1492d ago
TOTSUKO1492d ago

SSD is not just for loading times. It is tied to the gpu and has 2 cores (Almost equivalent to Zen 2 cores) in its controller to act as an extra pool of bandwidth. Confirmed by Digital Foundry.

Not to mention developers are more excited about the SSD tech they wanted for decades compared to extra power.

BTW Gears 5 is the worst Gears in the series. Can't believe people using that game as an argument when its even review bombed on the Xbox store itself.

BehindTheRows1492d ago

And I can run it, right now, at 144HZ on a device far better. So, you made absolutely no point at all. This is on top of the fact that, given the chance, the PS5 would be able to run Gears 5 under those same conditions I know some of you see some major "gap" here, but it doesn't exist.

Is the Series X more powerful? Yes. Is it big (like Pro → X big)? No. Not even close.

SyntheticForm1492d ago

I can't fully agree with this just because I personally don't care about Gears 5 at 120. I do agree about load time vs frame rate though.

I'd rather have better frame rates than faster load times, but, that's me.

Hungryalpaca1492d ago

If you’re choosing framerate over load times you should be playing on PC then.

Elda1492d ago

That is no way to sway me to buy an XBSX because of an old game that runs 120fps. Show off some new original must play AAA exclusives running at 120fps that will be impressive.

Exvalos1492d ago

You really going to be impressed at a last gen game, which was built to run on xbox vanilla, running 120 frames on next gen hardware? Must be nice to be an xbox dude as your expectations are so incredibly low.

REALAS1492d ago

S2Killinit1492d ago

Well if you like Gears of War 5 in smooth frames go for it. Im more excited for what Sony delivers generation after generation.

JesusBuiltmyHotrod1492d ago

I'll choose better games of the average gears of war thanks, Gears is exactly whats wrong with Xbox, mediocre and boring.

tay87011492d ago

Great so you get to play an enhanced mediocre game. While we get game of the year contenders with t.l.o.u.2 and g.o.t.

leejohnson2221492d ago

Oh really like all games on the X were said to be 4k and they simply were not?
Or high fidelity vr ? Best to wait and see as execs tend to lie

outsider16241492d ago

Happy for you man. But ill take Spiderman 2, Hzd, gow2 anytime anyday over 250fps gears of war.

Infact ill take GofTsushima and Tlou2 over it anyday.

TheKingKratos1492d ago

""Meanwhile, Gears of War 5 Multiplayer will be running at 120fps on Xbox Series X. Confirmed by Digital Foundry.""

/s 😒

It's like you guys live in another world.. how is gears 5 sales btw ?

MrVux0001492d ago

That's not much of a braging point considering GOW5 is a current gen game...

dekke1492d ago

morganfell1492d ago (Edited 1492d ago )

One remark I read quite often on this site is the comment that technical specifications matter to people that visit sites like this because they are of more importance to knowledgeable people with insight as when compared to the average gamer. Then they turn around and make a remark that undercuts their entire claim by blindly focusing on one number.

A Teraflop is a contrived number. It is a technical estimation computed by examining the design of the chip. It is not a guarantee you will get that same number of teraflops on the screen because that silicon can be bottlenecked and/or hamstrung at any point along the way.

There is a reason developers are excited by memory throughput on the new consoles. Comments about this new feature dominate the remarks made by developers since word of this feature was announced by both Microsoft and Sony. Developers were not beaming over the new silicon graphics possibilities, it was the SSD offerings. Not even the possibility of raytracing excited developers as much as the SSD throughput. And in that matter the throughput of the PS5 is twice that of the Xbox series X. Laymen, of which there are more on this site than some think, do not understand how the SSD pipeline affects graphics including frame rate. With a custom flash controller to manage the flow insuring no bottleneck, and CUs operating at a higher clock speed no one downplaying the PS5 should be counting their triangles yet.

moriarty18891492d ago

the same gears 5 that has been abysmal online since the initial surge of players after it debuted?

bouzebbal1492d ago

Haha this clown is still around?let's look at the game and compare what's really appealing. X1x is a proof that games mean everything.

TKCMuzzer1491d ago

Whats your point? It runs at 60FPS on the X, we would be more surprised if it didn't run better on the new console.
But you do back others peoples comments, they are talking about playing games designed with the PS5 in mind, you are talking about an Xbox One game.

Atticus_finch1491d ago (Edited 1491d ago )

Not even Xbox fans care about GeoW5. Lol

gravedigger1491d ago

Yeah, but where is Gears 5 now on most play list on Xbox Store US? Even with Game Pass? Yeah, you don't wanna know? But actually, at 39th place.

Edito1491d ago

Who want's to play Gears? lol

Now seriously Xbox as we speak has no games.

RedDevils1491d ago

You mean that turd 5 just get more shiny? Well, good luck with that.

Baza1491d ago

Enjoy your 13 second load times on previous gen games 😂

SpinalRemains1381491d ago

Frames are absolutely important, however not on inferior games.

I'd play Bloodborne over Gears any day, hands down....not even debatable without laughing.

Quality of game is paramount.

C-H-E-F1491d ago

@captaincook
You are also choosing an inferior system architecture, and mediocre exclusive titles that are shared on the PC platform. From the Xbox all the way to the Series X, you've been playing the same AAA exclusive literally beating a dead horse. I don't think people really realize how HUGE of a leap Sony has taken to the architecture of the PS5. Maybe next gen (ps6 / xbox series one X) when Microsoft steals the design for themselves you will see why it is being praised.

For those that don't understand, Sony just did what tesla is doing to the electric car industry. it's truely revolutionary and I just can't wait to see what is going to happen in the 1st and 2nd party market. I don't care for the 3rd party market because I will be buying those on the ps5 & pc so I will have the best of all worlds regardless. This generation is really astounding.

Thundercat771491d ago

if this is an excuse u have for lack of xbox one exclusives then it is a really sad one. while you enjoy your wait ps4 owners will be enjoying 2 huge exclusives

CaptainHenry9161492d ago (Edited 1492d ago )

It still gives Sony momentum. Most Sony fan expects most of Playstation exclusives to be great and that will make them upgrade and purchase a PS5

Cmv381492d ago

That's not true. Having bc with those games makes gamers more confident in upgrading.

Christopher1492d ago

***if this is an excuse u have for lack of xbox one exclusives then it is a really sad one. while you enjoy your wait ps4 owners will be enjoying 2 huge exclusives***

Let me get this straight:

1. I make a comment about Sony needing games on PS5.

2. You make it about XBO not having games, which has been the reason many people have used for explaining why XBO lost this generation.

3. You don't understand the irony in your statement about Xbox is the one I'm making about PS5 when people make it about PS4 games being on PS5.

4. You think I only own an Xbox, let alone don't realize I owned a PS4 way before an XBO.

Christopher1491d ago

***Are you saying that ps5 will be the first console ever to have last gen games only at launch? Lol...***

I'm saying the same thing many others have said here, if there are no exclusive games, there's not much reason to pick up new hardware if it only plays current-gen/crossover games. Does this rule not exist for PS5, just XSX?

Lol?

bouzebbal1491d ago

Yes lol, your post makes no sense..
A console never released without an exclusive.. I'm sure even ouya did.

S2Killinit1491d ago

I think Christopher means a console needs its own exclusive games. Which is very true. The PS5 will have exclusive games like every console before it of course but since Xbox SX does not have exclusives, what he says is not a moot point.

So yes, PS5’s PS4 heavyhitters like TLOU2 will be big drivers imo, but PS5’s own exclusives should be the focus going forward.

RedDevils1491d ago

Don't worry about Ps5 exclusives games in it firs 6 months. It will be available alright. But don't get your hope up of PS5 having no exclusive on launch day.

DarXyde1491d ago

I'm actually not against holding off on playing either game until I procure a PS5. I have a base PS4, so the enhancements would be our of this world for me.

So you are saying everything hinges on LoU2 and GoT reviewing well...?

And about the only thing that disappointed me about the PS5 was the bc. I was under the impression they would (at least) have digital PS1 support like the PS3, PSP, PSV has. Not having PS3 I can understand but even PS2 games have been given PS4 support (games like jedi knight 2 and racers revenge for example).

Otherwise I was very impressed with the PS5 and look forward to having one in my home.

CaptainHenry9161492d ago (Edited 1492d ago )

No but it does help and keep that reputation going. Sony has already prove themselves with great first party exclusives year after year and I expect them to continue that trend. It's the reason why I bought a PS4

1492d ago
SyntheticForm1492d ago (Edited 1492d ago )

No, but they help promote the brand overall.

Sony's IPs (TLOU2 and Ghost) reviewing well would be a boon and give them momentum and you could therefore make the case for a PS5 saying "Well check this out, if you get a PS5 you'll get even more games like these!"

I hope that's what people are trying to say because I have to agree.

Kumakai1492d ago (Edited 1492d ago )

yeah... complacency breeds a lack of innovation. ms is hungry and bringing it to the table. and they're going to have a lot more exclusives than just gears and halo. they've only slipped one right now: hellblade 2. they have 16 highly rated (now) first party studios all cranking at capacity for gen 9. don't expect xbox to be lacking quality exclusives this time. Couple that with superior hardware, better services like gamepass and xcloud. better support like software returns, free series x enhanced upgrades without the need to re-purchase a game, backwards compatibility across all generations - sorry. xbox actually has something to offer now - and its legit.

xX-oldboy-Xx1492d ago

But Sony has the better games, PS5 will be twice as fast at getting stuff on the screen - that surely makes up for any arbitrary difference in a tflop count.

Most of the decent studios ms acquired had already been making exclusively for xbox. The other are AA at best.

PS5 will have exclusives day 1 from 1st larty studios without it's baby brother screaming me to, me to. ms has crippled any performance gain of xsx by lugging the inferior xone/x into the dev cycle.

The SSD is where the big difference is coming from. Try and think a little outside the box. They're are both going at the same problem a different way.

TheTony3161491d ago

16 highly rated studios? That remains to be seen. Most of them haven't even released a game yet. Sony on the other hand has a proven track record.

RosweeSon1491d ago

You’ll be more likely to get a ridge racer, wipeout or Tekken for launch the real good stuff will be minimum 6 months after just so they can start getting the best out of the console.
Might even get a new Killzone or resistance

1491d ago
glennhkboy1491d ago

The issue, up to this point, is the absence of a hardware. Show us the look of the hardware, show us some technical demo, show us the technical of that revolutionary sound design. It is strange because by now, the hardware design should be set in stone, and production should be already underway. Not showing any hardware, does this mean that the hardware design is still not ready at this moment?

BehindTheRows1492d ago

Being part of the crowd who invented the 'secret sauce', I'm sure you know plenty about it. :)

@CaptainHenry916

The interesting thing is those who argue in favor of the SSD actually have a stronger point. It's an actual part inside the machine and can give you real world results. Floating point operations/second are, yes, a computational potential, but that's the extent. It's only a buzzword now because console gamers latch on to stuff like that without fully understanding what it is (it's the 'BitS" argument all over again).

snoopgg1492d ago

Sony will use the cloud to make ps5 more powerful. Lol!!!!

Atticus_finch1491d ago

Darth is still waiting for the cloud to make Xboxone x4 more powerful.

darthv721492d ago (Edited 1492d ago )

@rows and the SX SSD is no slouch and already confirmed it can be utilized in much the same way that Sony is saying. Both are directly connected to the main cpu/gpu. Both have dedicated processors to help move that data along. sony just has an extra one to increase that speed but neither one is riding in the slow lane on the highway.

Cupid_Viper_31492d ago (Edited 1492d ago )

It's amazing how you can rightfully perceive that SSD is indeed a very important part of the next-gen experience by the fact that both Sony and MS went to great length to integrate it into their respective consoles. And you again rightfully deduce that even with a 120% disadvantage, the Xbox won't be completely left behind in that department. But how come a 120% difference won't matter much, but a mere 14-17% will?

It's like people who see a supped up Corvette with 760 HP can't fathom that a supped up Mazda Miata weighing only half of what the corvette does would only require 500 hp to match the corvette while probably being more agile as well due to better overall weight distribution.

darthv721492d ago (Edited 1492d ago )

@cupid, I prefer to look at them as a cheetah (PS5) vs a lion (SX) one is faster and one is stronger but neither are prey. Both are predators who are very good at what they do.

ElementX1492d ago (Edited 1492d ago )

I doubt any game requires more than 2-3GB/Sec transfer rates. Nobody can answer me when I ask how much data is in one game location. I said in another thread that worlds load as you move, so when it takes you 10 seconds to walk across a city plaza, the game is loading in the background. Those 9GB/Sec max transfer rates won't matter because by the time you get to your destination, both consoles will have loaded the necessary data. If you teleport everywhere, like across every screen, then I can see the PS5 IO being helpful, but games don't work that way. You have to take into consideration travel time. No game will let the player travel at mach speed to use a constant 5+GB/sec data transfer. Level streaming will be seamless on both platforms. That's just open world games, games with actual levels don't need those speeds, either. Will a loading time of 3 seconds actually be any better than 5 or 6 seconds? How often do people fast travel? PS5 will maybe save you a couple minutes over the course of a day of gaming.

The-Matrix-has-you1492d ago

@elementx

That’s the point. With the additional speed, customizations and optimizations they have implemented in the SSD, I/O controller developers can change the way games are made. Your argument is based on what you know not what you haven’t seen created yet.

ElementX1491d ago (Edited 1491d ago )

Most games will still run on PC so I'm wondering just how many features for velocity processing whatever and 9GB/s IO are going to be utilized.

I don't think games will fundamentally change. It will be an evolution not a huge leap. 9GB is awesome but I'm just wondering the actual benefits when most games will cater to the lowest denominator

Show me what 9gb/s can do that 2.5gb can't as far as level design. You still have to travel and how large are assets? How much data is required for a city in Witcher 3 for instance? I've tried looking online. Nobody can tell me, I've asked in two threads now.

rainslacker1491d ago (Edited 1491d ago )

@Element

How much data that is in one location is irrelevant to the speeds by which it can be transferred across storage mediums and the bus. The point is, how much data can be moved within a time frame, and Sony gave a real world example of as quick as you can move the camera. MS dressed it up in PR, and for a group of people saying they want 100fps+, they aren't going to get that with the transfer speeds that MS allows with its design.

As to why no one can answer you, it's probably because you ask the wrong question, and the fact that there is no way to answer the question without knowing the design of the game, because as with many things in programming, the answer is, "it depends".

Toubabo_koomi1491d ago

Oh wow, now I'm imagining a game where you're in a jet travelling at Mach speeds with no texture degradation. It's all just there in perfect clarity no matter how fast you travel...

ElementX1491d ago (Edited 1491d ago )

I was simply trying to get a rough estimate of actual game asset sizes. If you fast travel to a city and the surrounding area is under say, 3GB, both consoles will load in about a second. I guess I want an idea of the amount of data we're talking about here. I'm sure no game will drop you into a location requiring 9GB of data, that just sounds absurdly high, but I dunno so I was asking and looking online.

How much data is streamed during normal travel? Wouldn't it be interesting to know? People are excited about IO but nobody knows what that's actually good for. We just have instant loading PR speak. If game assets don't require all that speed then you're paying more for an add on drive with no benefit other than a few seconds load time. 3rd party games will still run on Series X and PC

rainslacker1491d ago

I'd not look at it from the viewpoint of a full level, but rather, how much data is required to render a frame. That can vary quite a bit, but a 4K scene at 30fps, assuming a modest level of detail and number of objects(might be easier if you pick a few examples of games), would take maybe about 400-500MB of data for textures, and maybe 1/4-1/2 that amount for objects and everything attached to them(like AI or animation routines. There is a lot of shared data, which wouldn't have to keep being pulled in every time it's needed, and it'd make more sense to keep that in resident memory. A full scene in a game, as in keeping everything need that you may encounter between any load sessions will probably run anywhere between 2-4GB, with the rest of memory used for program runtime tasks such as actually running the game loop, or handling the rendering engine.

The application is going to determine the effect and benefit of this feature, and realistically, it wouldn't make sense to always be streaming data in every time you turn a camera, and chances are, scenes aren't going to require a lot of that. But it opens up the potential to have complex objects and high levels of detail on objects streamed in on the fly, instead of requiring some trick to load it in that would distract the user...like a cutscene or maybe an ominous sound that breaks the action until something jumps out at you.

It can allow for much more complex levels of detail which can allow you to zoom in close to objects, and add detail to them without having to keep that loaded in memory or have some delay when examining them.

As to how much data is streamed within normal travel....probably not much with the way things are designed now. Most games use what's called occlusion culling, which only loads things when you pass through certain areas, such as a tunnel or a room between two other rooms. Open world games use LOD streaming, which can load sections that act as a buffer between areas, but general information about the area you can see, but aren't in yet are streamed in on the fly. It's usually why there are such sharp changes when going from one "zone" to another, as opposed to the gradual change that you would normally see.

In the end though, how much is more of an it depends situation. There is no one answer, because there are numerous solutions. There are people who do nothing but think of ways to do things, and all of them get shared and reused, and improved upon over time.

S2Killinit1491d ago

From what is being said by devs, the SSD in PS5 is very much a secret sauce. A real one in this case based on actual hardware. While xbox is using a SSD, it is half (?) as fast as the PS5.

You mean like the PS3 fuck up?

Hungryalpaca1491d ago

The thing is TF really doesn’t mean that much. It’s a very poor way of calculating power. Lower TF cards frequently outperform higher TF cards.

SwampthingsSon1491d ago

PS3 didn't work for MANY devs. It doesn't always work for them.

Sony did drop the ball. They solved a problem where one didn't exist with that audio stuff. They could have had a cheaper dedicated hardware solution then given us a better gpu. All the subscriber to df and there patrons is a clue. People want pixels and frame rates. The sad part is they could have had all Thad ssd stuff too. There is no value in spending money on something that 5 out a 100 people will notice. Mark Cearny should have to answer to the board. I'm a PlayStation guy and admit that the system is very dissapointing. No one ever talks about audio with any sort of sophistication. It's kind of a failure. Honestly. Mark Cearny because of the success of the PS4 was left to his own devices. That was a mistake. Like kojima on death stranding. He made a console he wanted, not one the people paying for it wanted. I mean it's Rdna 2 but not really. That was evident when he said the game with that raytracing with very little compromise at the end. It should've been zero if trully dedicated hardware was on the silicon. It's essentially a PS4 pro pro with better audio. Or a movie player with the best audio. That could have been a beast too. They messed up with that audio crap.

Magog1492d ago

The "audio stuff" is clearly part of their PSVR 2 program and VR is the future of gaming.

thtruth5741492d ago

Like Kinect...we will see. I'm a PlayStation guy and I'm the first to admit that I am.more excited for the Xbox. Someone on the board should have told him no with that audio stuff. Mailing photos of your ear and stuff. That cost them more money in the long run. Its a problem that didn't exist. The money would've been better spent on cpu and gpu stuff. Along with the ssd, that would have been a killer.

Cmv381492d ago

They had dedicated audio on the ps4 and went back to that. Series x also has dedicated audio...so I guess they dropped the ball too. Fanboys are weird.

thtruth5741492d ago (Edited 1492d ago )

I bet they didn't spend a crap ton like Sony. I'm saying Sony went overboard with it.

ShadowWolf7121492d ago

I love how everyone bagged on Sony for not "innovating" with the PS4, then bag on them for innovating with the PS5.

That "audio crap" has the potential to fundamentally transform the level of immersion we have in gaming,

thtruth5741492d ago

But no one cares about that. Df had never mentioned it. It's frame rates and pixel count. They have millions of subscribers and patreon to watch their videos. People care about frame rates and pixel counts. It makes no business sense. Under pure academic scrutiny Sony missed the mark.

RememberThe3571492d ago

DF makes a point of talking about Sony's approach to audio in their spec breakdown. They're clearly impressed.

"Under pure academic scrutiny" Sony did some interesting and innovative things with the PS5 architecture. They didn't sell it well but the system itself is very interesting.

There's no reason why the PS5 needs to be a more powerful Xbox. If they weren't going to chase raw power with MS this is exactly what they should have done. They just should have sold it better.

S2Killinit1491d ago

Pretty sure it will be great for VR.

zeuanimals1491d ago (Edited 1491d ago )

@S2Killinit:

It'll be great for everything, but I can especially see it working well for shooters and horror. Imagine being able to hear the exact position of another player in a shooter based on their footsteps. Not the general area like right now, but where they really are. Or having to realistically figure out where you're being shot at as you can hear bullets fly past. With horror, it's obvious.

"They have millions of subscribers and patreon to watch their videos."

Digital Foundry doesnt even have one million subscribers on YouTube and I'll bet their Patreon subs are significally lower than that. All of their videos only get a few hundred thousand views at most.

Face it, PS5 will win the next generation because of Sony's history of strong game line ups like it always has.

thtruth5741492d ago (Edited 1492d ago )

Audio was an invented problem. No one cared. Sony is making people think they care. They had the ssd. They could have used cheaper custom audio and gotten better CPU and GPU tech with saved time and money. My point was when you do comparisons, sound isn't talked about. I stand by my thought. That sound thing is wasted resources.

CernaML1492d ago

My point is that no one cares about small graphical differences like youre trying to make it out to be.

The Digital Foundry audience is niche and the average consumer will go with the system that is priced better.

You people are making it out to be like the PS5 is a weak POS when its not even that far behind the Series X at all. The PS5 will do things better than the Series X just like how the PS2 was able to do things better than the OG Xbox.

TKCMuzzer1491d ago (Edited 1491d ago )

audio crap? So all you want it better graphics. You don't want advancements in immersion to do with gaming. I'm all for this, currently playing COD, surround sound makes anything up or down hard to tell it's location, if this new audio allows for precise location of sound then thats a winner. Also, I think your underestimating the effect this sound could have on the experience, if you understand the tech, its a serious sound upgrade.
You clearly don't realise the potential this could have. Graphics will reach a ceiling, other advancements need to be made to push gaming.
Also if you watch DF video they are clearly very excited for the sound but hey, you cherry pick the bits you want.

Atticus_finch1491d ago

"Audio stuff"
You don't know enough to make such a confident comment.

Chevalier1491d ago

" But no one cares about that. Df had never mentioned it. It's frame rates and pixel count. They have millions of subscribers and patreon to watch their videos. People care about frame rates and pixel counts. It makes no business sense. Under pure academic scrutiny Sony missed the mark."

They do? Weird I could have sworn the Nintendo Switch which have neither of those advantages just blew by 7 years of Xbox sales in under 3 years? Maybe it was my imagination? Oh right that actually did happen. Turns out the general population just wants the better games. Wow the PS1, PS2 and Wii also won by huge margins even though they were significantly underpowered too. Weird it's almost like the power in almost all the major generations didn't matter as much as we thought.

Lamusiqa1491d ago

I totally understand where you're coming from because I'm a graphics whore (which is why I game on PS4 and PC) but since I play a lot of online multiplayer first person shooters with a surround sound headset, the idea of 3D audio is really exciting to me. It's a much-welcomed innovation particularly for the eSports crowd because it provides another level of immersion where you can tell the location of your enemy vertically as well as compared to right now where it's either left, right, front and back.

And it is indeed RDNA2 GPU. They have confirmed multiple times that the console will have hardware ray-tracing, just like the competition. And if you think having a dedicated RT hardware on the silicon won't have an impact on framerates when RT is turned on, the RTX series graphics card has got some benchmarks for you.

I would be lying to say that the Xbox Series X doesn't seem impressive. It is a beast in its own right but being 15% more powerful is just not enough anymore. PS4 GPU was roughly 50% more powerful than Xbox One when they launched

343_Guilty_Spark1491d ago

There is no dedicated block for ray tracing.

TheTony3161491d ago

Funny how everyone has a PHD in HW engineering as soon as new consoles get revealed. You most likely have no idea what you're talking about. I bet the PS5 will be the more successful console regardless of specs. But let's just wait and see lol.

ABizzel11491d ago

And if they went with a higher priced GPU then it would be a higher priced console. It's practically an RTX 2070s vs an RTX 2080s both of which are great GPUs, but easily $100 apart on the console level.

Hungryalpaca1491d ago

You have 0 idea what you’re talking about.
