Super Mario 3D World is Less Than 2GB in File Size

Super Mario 3D World officially weighs in at 1702MB. I wonder how much optimization was put in this game. What sorcery?!?!

Wind Waker HD was close to that amount as well, I think. Needless to say, Nintendo knows how to pack in a game.

I think it has a lot to do with simple texture maps and no voice-acting, those tend to eat up a lot of space.

still 2gb is ridiculously small, luckily size has nothing to do with quality and prettiness

Nope, Wind Waker HD is barely around 700 MB. I know because I downloaded it.

+1 simply because it's refreshing to see somebody with a nick like yours that can still appreciate another console. You're right about the Wii U as well, despite Nintendo's somewhat shoddy marketing the console is shaping up quite well nowadays.

here in UK I hear so many commercials on radio about nintendo 2DS ,but hell, I arent't they marketing Wii U so much, same goes with Wonderful 101.. I hope those two I mentioned will go well in a time being..

on topic: Mario galaxy games were not big in size too, but that didn't stop being them awesome games, this new Mario game gonna be amazing :)

I think this just shows what can be done with game sizes and also this game has great graphics too. Hurry up and put it in the stores bit N I want this game but until then I still have Pikmin 3, Windwaker, Splinter Cell and Sonic Lost Worlds to get through.

they tackle every bit of data in the game to have so much for what seems so little according to amount of gb this game has. i mean look at the metriod prime games on gamecube with just one disc

Yep and then they were able to compress the trilogy onto one Wii disc.

Nintendo are the undisputed kings of compression. Now imagine when they make a game that actually uses the full 25GB on their discs. :-0

it would be the longest game of all time if they ever use full 25 gig.....imagine they use a dual layer and use the full dual layer we would be playing one game for one whole generation because thats how long it would take to finish

Funny how theyve gone from seeing how much they can cram on a 8GB Wii disc to how little they can put on a 25GB wii u disc xD

I am surprised that they can pack it so small, but I am guessing that a lot of the art textures, while still pretty, are cartoonish in nature. Resulting in much smaller file sizes I would imagine due to their "simplicity" when compared with photo-realistic textures and such.

Yeah, there's a ton of reasons ninty games pale in size compared to its competitors. I would like to see a game like killzone or forza ported to the wii u so we could see just how powerful that "wizardry" is.

It also has the added advantage of making loading much quicker. I doubt there will be much thumb-twiddling between levels :)

I assume they work more with shaders than textures for most of their enemies ( they are usually just a color with a neat shader). I haven't really seen much normal maps though. Lack of voice acting...it's not that surprising.

i think its pretty obvious that thus game started out as a sequel to mario 3d land and was initially intended for the 3ds. But with sales plummeting on wii u and the 3ds with masses of great titles already, nintendo decided to add 4-player abiity, scale it to hd and use it as a flagship game for wii u, knowing that this will tide us over until a fully realised mario galaxy (3?) could be made.

no. Before Wii U launch Nintendo stated that they have a 3D Mario in development for Wii U.

That does not exclude his theory. He is simply stating that they could have shifted the project to Wii U instead. To give the Wii U more value.
