PSN Store Claims Battlefield 4 is 1080p on PS4

Yea, pretty much any HDTV purchased within the last 3-4 years probably has 1080p and defiantly can do 60fps, even cheapos.

HDTVs have been able to produce 60fps since they have been for sale. Hell even a decent amount of old CRT TVs could do 60fps.

I think your getting this launch mixed with the 360/ps3 launch. These systems shouldn't require you to get a new TV, they just fill in everything your current TV can do.

Its pretty much the norm nowadays. Sure, there are a few unlucky souls out there. but overall not an issue at all. 1080p should be standard now, especially for a supposed next gen console.

@Killrate - Well it only has a HDMI out port, I'm sure that there is a converter out there somewhere and someone could probably get PS4 working on a crappy old TV set. Unlikely that anyone will actually do it, but it's probably possible.

If someone can afford a PS4, they can afford a decent HDTV. HDTV's used to be crazy expensive, I won't even mention when they first hit the scene decades ago (but were pointless since virtually no content was created for the resolutions) but even in the early-to-mid 00's they were super-expensive. Today you can find great sets for dirt-cheat. I upgrade the 26" in my bedroom to a 32" for only $208.

So I don't think it's a problem, at least not a realistic one. There are some really old HDTV's out there that only had component support, with no HDMI, but the odds of someone keeping a set like that around for such a long time...

I have no doubt this game is going to run in 1080P. I'm sure with pressure from Sony and pressure from consumers, they've done everything they can to get the game running at a native 1080p resolution.

That's not to say the entire game may be running 1080P. I'm guessing single player is definitely going to run a 1080P, Multiplayer may be what suffers and runs at a sub 1080 resolution because of the 64 players on the screen at once. Though, don't quote me. I'm just spit balling. Though, they have been working on it long enough that they may have been able to get the 900p to 1080p by just toning something down in multiplayer.

Time will tell, but I hope this is true. Especially for the single player side. I'm not much of a multiplayer gamer, but want single player to be all it can be.

There's anti-aliasing, shadow detail, obviously it could have a more stable FPS trying to do the same things as Xbox, a man could look on some but he has names to offer.

Making a 1080p monitor a requirement is foolish on EA's part if this is true. A lot of people have older 1080i or 720p TV's. Hell, they still sell TV's that are 720p or 1080i max. Assuming that everyone has a 1080p TV will lead to angry returns and lower sales.

It will scale to whatever you set the output of your ps4 to be. if you only have 720 you set it to 720. Most TVs that have HD ready are 720 but will downscale a 1080 signal. So you can either downscale it in the ps4 or output 1080 to the tv and have that do it.

720p isn't really an important output option these days, but have been hoping both consoles do some decent scaling to 4k as that will become relevant in a few years. Maybe it does up better than down.

I have no doubt that the PS4 could run this at 1080p@60hz. The question is more towards will Dice or whoever do the Battlefield games invest enough time and effort to achieve it.
It certainly would give bragging rights to PlayStation, if the XBox version is not full HD.

But my question is does this mean the game won't run at 720 if you don't have a 1080p display? It just says that it requires a 1080p display in order to view a 1080p signal. That seems quite obvious. Just because it doesn't mention 720 doesn't mean it won't play that.
If you go to the PS Store now and look up "flOw" it will tell you that the PS3 version is in 1080p and the game plays fine in 720.
There is not standard for the game description or requirements in the store. Some games list their resolution, some do not. Some brag that the game is in 1080p even if it's also available at other resolutions (though those are specifically mentioned). Killzone Shadow Fall is 1080p but nowhere in the game description does it mention that. So I'll wager that BF4 can be played on any HD display.

If you want to play in 1080p you need a monitor/tv that can handle 1080p. If you have a 720p tv however it will output the signal in 720p.

Exactly, but the way I'm reading this article, they're interpreting it as saying that it ONLY outputs in 1080p and therefore the only way you can play it is on a 1080p monitor, which I don't think is the case.

I actually went back and re-read it only to discover that they changed the article. If you look in the address bar, it contains the title "psn-claims-battlefield-4 -is-1080p-on-ps4-requires-1080p -native-display/" but they have since cut out the whole section about "requiring a 1080p display." The original article had a paragraph in which they said that a 1080p display was required to play the game at all. So in the original, if you had a 720 display you were SOL. They have since gone back and corrected it... which is something you would normally see as an update to the article instead of deleting parts out of it.
Anyway, that's where my confusion came from.

Video output will be 1080p, it's already been confirmed. The rendering can be done at 720p or 900p and will then be up scaled to 1080p. This does not mean the resolution is natively 1080p but it does mean that the information on the store is correct.

1080p video output does not mean 1080p native resolution.

it will be 720p native resolution or a bit more but I don't care. Somewhere in the lifecycle of the Ps4 and X1 the games will run at 1080p native but for now... most will probably go the 720p or almost 1080p road.
