PS4 vs Xbox One - US Pre-Orders Update - Xbox One Gains Ground

"VGChartz has gathered the latest pre-order numbers for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in the US. The data is up to the week ending October 19, 2013. The last time the data was collected was the week ending August 24, 2013.

In the latest pre-order data the PlayStation 4 has gained 125,000 pre-orders for a total of 725,000 in the US. The Xbox One has managed to gain ground on the PlayStation 4 as it gained 175,000 pre-orders during the same time frame. The Xbox One currently sits at 525,000 pre-orders.

hmmm so if these numbers are close the console thats had all bad PR and nobody wants is only 200k behind in game preorders with likely a larger base waiting to make digital purchases and sitting at a little less than a mil console preorders vs a little little more than a mil for the competition= pretty good momentum. Either way I think the important thing is that ALL signs point to us getting 2 great next gen consoles that will remain competitive for long after launch.

Why do people keep assuming that there is a huge difference between people who want to buy digital on X1 vs PS4? Is it because MS made a big deal about digital since the reveal? It makes no sense because Sony has been pushing digital a lot harder than MS this gen, and it seems to have quite a base of digital users given how the store has grown quite a bit in the last few years.

It seems to me that these numbers show MS doing better than reports on console hardware sales differences, or that X1 owners are going to be buying more games per console sold(attach rate) when the system launches.

Are there a lot of digital purchasers on Xbox 360? All of the people that I know with 360's would rather buy the physical copy every time.

Myself and anyone I know with a ps3 have made multiple digital purchases. PS Plus got me used to digital games on a console, and then plus sales keep coming along and make digital versions cheaper.

BTW I'm not trolling; I just don't understand this mentality that Xbox users will make more digital purchases than ps3 users when my experience has been the opposite.

I'm looking at the sales for this-and next-week on the PS Blog, and I can easily see why I own way more digital games than physical ones.

Edit: Here, and I presume all of Canada, the PSN doesn't charge tax; so, unless a game is on sale in store, it's always cheaper to buy the digital version. I don't know if this applies to other countries though.

Those are impressive number for Killzone :SF. Pretty damn good considering it's competing with the two top multiplatform shooters in the gaming industry. Well deserved. It's a great franchise.

I just can't wait for next gen to start already. I'm making changes to my gaming area (gaming room and adjacent theater) right now in preparation. All new seating and making a few sound upgrades as well. New generation, new toys to enhance the experience. Can't wait!

for example 2 companies(A&B) "allocate" only 100k of a product to 100 retailers, 90 of them sellout of product A, while 50 sellout of product B..

If Microsoft comes out and says there is game trading and offline restrictions...then there will still be MILLIONS of potential buyers who will STILL THINK THAT....even if they later RETRACT IT.

That's called common sense. When you have everyone's attention, that's when you give them the news.

If you told them the WRONG news, or news that would later be changed (i.e. 180), then they won't have the same opportunity to reach those people and the people those people talked to.

I can sit here and tell you Microsoft told Xbox Fans about these restrictions, and they will still be trying to re-educate their fans for YEARS.

In 2015, there will still be people, because of MICROSOFT, who still think you need to have the Xbox One connected, and all the other 180's.

How people can blame Sony for Microsoft's idiot message is incredibly sad.

The same thing goes with consoles pre-orders. Everybody has been saying it's sold out. Lots of people who want a console are waiting because they were told they're both sold out. Some have been told that the PS4 is out...so they look for an Xbox One. Regardless, what will really drive the story is how each sells outside of the holiday and launch season when both are freely available and in stock.

So that's how you can have both consoles 'sold out', yet some still take orders, and how you can still have hundreds of thousands more sold. Because pre-order standards are different across the board with different companies setting each.

Some are still taking sales. Some aren't. Also the consoles didn't sell out together. Meaning when one really hit a guaranteed preorder sellout, the other didn't, and could continue to be sold.

So people need to look at what these really mean. What it tells you. What it DOESN'T tell you.

Also I don't see VGChartz as a 100 percent accurate and all inclusive of every console and game sold. For example it's notorious for not counting digital game sales.

Why do you say that? The initial backlash and lack or pre-orders wasn't because Xbox fans were looking forward to the digital future that MS was giving them. It also wasn't all from Sony fan boys. It seems to me many Xbox fans aren't too inclined towards a digital future.

Look, I'm sure there are a lot of people that are into digital. There were a lot this gen. The number of digital software sold has risen dramatically this gen, particularly in the last year, but it is still not close to retail purchases, especially in the home console market. In this, one has to assume, since these numbers aren't separated when reported by third parties, that the amount of digital content being sold between each system should be relatively even. I also highly doubt that a massive influx of people are eagerly anticipating buying all their games digitally come a new generation, as most of the kinks that hold DD back still exist. At this point in time there are just too many questions left unanswered about how much control a person has over those purchases, and if those purchases will even last past a single generation. DD is popular on PC, but consoles are an entirely different beast in this regard. In fact, some reports are already saying that it's unclear how PS1/2/3 digital purchases will carry on in the future, or wonder why PS1/2 isn't available through emulation on the PS4.

For my part, there is no way I would buy DD from any company that has shown such an anti-consumer stance on the idea of DD. What it all boils down to is that MS wanted control over my purchases, but offered little in the way of making that a attractive value to me.

That's right, but Sony has also been promoting DD heavily these past few years through PS+, PS+ sales, heavy redesigns for their stores, pre-loading games for day one release, etc. Sony hasn't been slouching, but they leave the choice up to the customer. In the end, Sony has made DD more attractive by not showing off that they want to control the software sold on their system, when in fact, it's not much different from what MS or other DD markets offer. They certainly don't tout it as the future, because they know that retail still trumps digital in a big way.

One other thing to note. Given that COD, a highly successful multi-plat title is relatively even with a slight edge on XB1 mean that the ratio of people that are buying it is about even across both consoles. I'm just asking for anyone to show any sort of evidence that a significant number of people buying an X1 are anticipating getting it digitally. I haven't seen a single report that suggests this. The only ones saying this are some people on forums, and their logic doesn't really make any sense.

Whatever number you get at this point is pointless, because supply is constrained for both MS and Sony.

It says nothing about demand, but rather at best about the supply.

Even then, the grand scheme of even a few million units is miniscule for the overall lifetime sales.

To even get an indication you really have to wait until next holiday when more of the games are out, the direction is clear and the console is in peoples hand and the word of mouth and hype train starts.

Once again, it comes down to online play. Ease of access and ease of use make it the better choice. It looks like Sony is making big strides with the PS4. If free access to Netflix makes the gaming experience better for you, then that is great. To me,being able to access all of my friends, start up a group chat regardless where they are online and send out a group invite makes online more fun. As for dedicated servers, how did that make your game experience better than mine? I honestly have no idea when I played on a server or over p2p. Isn't that the important part?

As for the whole DRM thing, I absolutely liked the idea of being able to rip all my games to my consoles HDD and access them from anywhere and any time. All my consoles are connected 24/7 already and I've never gone 24 hours without service. Even if I ever do, I own a cell phone that I can use as a hotspot to transfer the small file needed once every 24 hours to verify my library.

I also think they will wait to see how well the kinect sku sells at 500, and if they need to then they may sell a second sku with out it. I don't know how soon, but a year seems a bit early. I wouldn't be all too surprised though if they do indeed make a move around fall 2014 with halo/titanfall. places here in Maryland have been taking PS4 pre orders since february vs Xbox One pre orders since August.

5 month difference in the states and there's only a ~200,000 difference with Xbox One gaining ground quickly at a higher price point and "bad PR".

In my experience if I didn't pre order a game that was popular I would not get a copy on day one or i would have to go to different shops til I found one because they do sell out. Or if I didnt pre order a game that was more niche than the shops wouldnt carry it at all or not until days or weeks after launch. I think there's just too many games out now for any retailer to have room for each and every one.

If Ryse was the only game available for me to see what the console is truly capable of, I would probably pre order Ryse, however I have a choice between 4 games. And I am personally still undecided which is why I have not preoreded a single game (I may get all).

I would hardly say that killzone is a system seller, but if you already have your mind made up that this is the console you are going to buy, you will probably get the best and most impressive looking game on that system.

As the XBox folk correctly pointed out all this generation, the vast majority of games are multi plats. Buying a single console comes down to which exclusives you like better. For myself and many others, every gamer I know in real life actually, that means Playstation and it's not even close.

Judging a console by a list of launch games is beyond idiotic. History says Sony's console will win the exclusive battle, while MS's will start strong and then fade. Learning from history has never been a strong point of the human race in general though.

You have a short or (more likely) selective memory. While you were waiting for your PS3 your friends were playing the likes of Call of Duty 2 and Gears of War. While you were waiting for Lair to show us all what the Cell and Blu-ray could do your friends were playing Mass Effect and Bioshock.

360 blasted out critically and publicly acclaimed games for it's early years, PS3 started slow but kept them coming for a bit longer.

I would not swap those early games for any Uncharted, TLOU, God of War or Killzone but I'd accept that someone else loves them and I accept that they are good games in their own right.

It's OK to acknowledge good games on both platforms, and it's better than OK to anticipate good games on both new platforms.

I have a Xbox one on pre order with KI and Forza 5 but the test of my pre order games have been Pikmin 3, Zelda WindWaker HD, Wonderful101, Sonic Lost Worlds, Mario World 3D, Mario Kart, Super Smash Bros, Donkey Kong and Pokémon X.

I decided to have the next few months off FPS games as I have found my self getting bored of them after hammering them over the last 8 years but with the games I have said above im sure there is enough to pick from before the One or PS4 has the games you crave.

For me no matter what type of gamer you are it is a great time to be a gamer as the WiiU, Xbox One, PS4, 3DS, PSV, Xbox 360 and PS3 all have must own games on them.

Great numbers all round but I really dislike the way in which the 'pre order' is now used to judge the success of a product before its even in the public domain. Its almost like a political opinion poll in terms of trying to determine a likely outcome.

The pre order was introduced to ensure product availability in a situation where supply was limited (such as new consoles where its properly used). Now its been bastardized by companies into a method of securing purchases, up-selling 'special' editions and features and/or predicting sales patterns and manufacturing volumes.

I used to like the days when a games sales performance wasn't known before it even hit retail, and when a purchasing decision wasn't influenced by what plastic figurine comes in the box or how big a night vision camera they can get away with charging you £200 for or what gun texture is included to make you look hard.

I know I'm old fashioned but there are no surprises anymore (or very few anyway)...

Why does anybody care how many systems each respective manufacturer sells? Do you have a vested interest in the corporations? It shows what I was talking about in my most recent blog. People seem more interested in sales numbers and jumping on the bandwagon of their favorite system instead of enjoying the games for what they are and not what game sites and forums, tell us they should be.

Yet, it seems sales numbers and preorder figures make gamers feel better about the purchase they are about to make. Like they are somehow validated for the choice they made in hardware, because their system sold 10 more units than the next. The only way these numbers make any sense, is if you were an investor who has that vested interest in one of these companies. Even then, it is trivial, because anything can happen in between now and the launch of the systems. Whether that be shortages, hardware defects or multitude of other issues that would drive the profit, if any, down or totally negate it.

Too many gamers seem to care more about sales numbers and validating their purchases than they do about gaming itself. Hell-bent on throwing their own personal choices in the faces of those who don't agree with them. Who cares if you like the Xbox or the PlayStation brands. You chose your system for one reason or another and both systems are going to have great games. Yet all gamers can do is turn everything into a pissing contest. Trying to win some sort of imaginary race they build up in her head. A race they are neither in control of or a part of. Because the ultimate winner isn't you or I, it is the corporations. Those same corporations who would choose money over you without a second thought. Who would totally destroy gaming, if it meant a higher bottom line.

All of us gamers need to start fighting the fight for gaming itself and not our own personal preferences. Because one day, it's going to bite us all in the ass and we will only have ourselves to blame. Which I'm sure a lot of us would only point the finger at somebody else, making it their issue. Because nobody seems to want to take responsibility for their own actions anymore. Always making it somebody else's fault, to keep their imaginary level of perfection intact.

Digital purchasing is really going to screw up their pre-order numbers until the consoles launch and we can do so.

I haven't pre-ordered a single game because I am going all digital and I assume both systems are missing a lot of numbers because of it.

You're going to go all digital? I hope not with some games going to be weighing in over 30GB. That is insane, if you are getting a Xbox One, as you can't upgrade the hard drive internally.

Also a lot of people have bandwidth limitations and slow speeds. I don't see Digital being very practical now. This coming from someone who has over 130 digital downloads on my PS3.

I have a 1 TB full in my PS3. That being said, with the size of games even now (some like uncharted over 30GB) I will not be going Digital on PS4 unless they have awesome deals and its worth the space on the HDD. Same goes when I get Xbox One. Only going Digital if its worth it.

I'm sure devs and Sony/Microsoft will try their hardest to entice people to go Digital for the obvious monetary benefit.

If they are able to offer good deals they will also be able to create that Steam economy at some point in their cycle and will be great for both consumers and the developers.

I also do this with the added perk that it will eventually turn Gamestops into Radio Shacks.

But thats the problem, games are not cheaper digitally, not this gen at least, there is almost no incentive apart from convenience. Most of the time i can find a cheaper game in a store than on the online store

The PS4 have a huge pre orders advantage over the X1 on the US, that is really bad news for Microsoft because the US was he only market where xbox had an edge over the PlayStation and if the US market now belongs to Sony this means that worldwide the PS4 have left the x1 on the dust.

Two things

First their pre-order numbers come out just a day after MS claimed they had just as many pre-orders as Sony. So you should automatically be suspicious of the timing.

Second, all vgchartz sales numbers and pre-order data is a complete lie. 100% falsehood.

Here's what I can tell you. NPD data subscriptions come with a $10,000 yearly subscription. There is also a strict penalty for sharing this data. I know for certain that the owners of vgchartz do not have a subscription to NPD. The NPD service also only covers 60% of the market, and there is no way to get the rest of the data unless you have insider information from both suppliers and literally 100s of brick and mortar stores and online retailers.

Second and most importantly, sales data is a closely guarded secret, and this especially includes pre-order data. Retailers do not want this data leaking to their competitors for a great many reasons too numerous and complex to list here.

Third, in many countries there is no equivalent to the NPD service, so their global data is especially fictitious.

Fourth, they are not getting data from the suppliers themselves because that info is only shared in quarterly reports and even then it's not always accurate. (For example Sony who combined ps2 and ps3 shipments for over two years.)

Now you're going to have one of two reactions to what I just said:

If you're smart and have the ability to think things through logically you will realize that I have told you the truth.

Not to discount gurilla but I have heard on here over and over that the reason: Microsoft has more exclusive games sales this gen is because they have less exclusives than Sony. This could and should apply to the ps4 as they have only two exclusives and the rest are multi platform in Knack and Killzone. So my point is with killzone being the only hardcore game releasing on launch its preorders should be good and ms should have more balanced preorders with more to choose from.

If the PS4 wins in the xbox home ground at all, Sony just won the whole thing. Seriously. That's like saying a democtratic candidate won Texas, but just barely. The only place that Microsoft has any hope of winning right now is the US, the other markets are very unlikely to choose xbox at this point, because a ton of the cool feature ms has made (which I must admit there are some), aren't even there. And they've basically picked to only try to win the US. And let's look at the numbers. The 360 holds 62% of the market in the US (excluding the wii because we aren't talking about that right now). That means A LOT of people are jumping ship on Microsoft. It's like what happened with the jump from ps2 to ps3. Except this proves that microsoft was never here to last, and they just semi captured the market for one generation.

Can't speak for all future Xbox One owners, but I haven't pre ordered a single game for the Xbox One. I'm going digital all the way. Though I can't speak for everyone, I know I'm not the only one who intends to go total digital with the X1. I was cool with Microsofts original vision so I find myself trying to maintain that vision as much as I can. On the other hand, I have pre ordered physical copies of games for my PS4. Because of this, I believe pre order numbers will be off.

Is it just me? Besides all the talk: It could be the best generation of consoles and games. I truly believe that we all will profit from where Sony and Microsoft are coming from and where they heading towards now. Just look at the past 8 years. PS2 dominated, X360 turned the game in favor for Microsoft, PS3 gained ground and eventually suprassed X360 in worldwide sales but still losing a huge piece of market share in the US by doing so.

So what we have now is a big, full-tensed tie. It's a tie that will only be decided by quality by a large share and what both Sony and Microsoft will pull out of their respective shelves. It should be a very good base for innovations and exclusive titles to come down the road.

Sony definetely had a better kick-off, I guess we all can't deny that. And Microsoft will do anything to catch up. So, relax guys, there's something coming for us.

Lets just call it my lil experiment. "One" console for all digital and PS4 for physical, aside from the rental games that PS Plus offers.
As far as taking peoples rights away, it's not that serious. I haven't bought a music CD in years. Yet I have plenty of music. The movie industry is now embracing the digital wave and it's my belief that the gaming industry will follow suit in the coming years.
