Wind Waker and the Failing Wii U

Thomas Ferguson of Kaboomshark writes "Oh, Nintendo, what the hell happened to you? There is no doubt that Nintendo’s handheld market is doing well with the 3DS, its Wii U console on the other hand might as well be in a coma for all the good it is doing the company. In the first eleven months of being out the Wii U had only sold 3,667,904 units. The Wii on the other hand sold 13,479,686 units in its first eleven months. Do you know why there is such a big gap between the two? Nintendo has always sold its consoles based on their iconic series of games; Zelda, Mario, Smash Brothers, Metroid. Even though the Wii U had a larger launch lineup than the Wii, thanks largely to games that were out on other systems months before, it did not have that one game that everybody wanted to play."

So sick of these "failing Wii U" articles!

4logpc3838d ago

I'm sick of anyone who can write a blog thinks they understand the gaming industry

a console that just had a 200% increase is far from failing.

If windwaker released and they saw no difference then sure, that's an issue, but Nintendo moved more consoles by releasing an hd remake of a game....far from failing.

Theyellowflash303838d ago

How the hell did a Wii U doom article get approved when sales have been going up?

Dunban673838d ago

Even with a 200% increase, sales are still VERY slow and far below Nintendo s own projections of 9 million Wii u s sold for their fiscal year ending end of March 2014 (that is 9 million for the fiscal year only not total from launch)

So before you start knocking someone who can look behind a headline you may want to slow down a bit- Saying The wii U is doing well now because sales are up is like saying a guy running a race is doing great because he moved up from 20th place to 19th place in a 20 man race when the 18th placed guy just crossed the finish line- The wii U needs to sell a few million consoles this holiday - think they will do it?

4logpc3838d ago

If the consoles life span was to be 2 years I'd agree, but this is a 6-8 years cycle...they are far from doomed.

no need to be so aggressive.

Theyellowflash303838d ago

The sales will pick this holiday. Wind Waker is just a start.

If you count Europe, America, and Japan. Heck yeah Wii u is going to sell a few million. The PS4 and Xbox One don't launch in Japan next year.

Nintendo has Japan to itself this holiday season.

BosSSyndrome3838d ago

Except the finish line is like 6 years away.

Nintendo caught lightning in a bottle with the Wii. What sold the Wii more; Mario Galaxy or Wii Sports? Twilight Princess or Wii Fit?

The "casual crowd" was fascinated by this new "toy" (that's basically all it was to most people) - and so they bought it and played it for a while. The Wii was a fad, a fad which slowly descended after a while.

Now most of that casual crowd has migrated to their smartphones and tablets to play other fads like Angry Birds, Temple Run and Candy Crush.

Don't get me wrong ~ I love the Wii. It was my first console and it's brought me countless hours of fun across a multitude of titles - so I'm not dissing it at all. What I am saying is that most of those millions of sales are from parents who bought a system for their little kids to play "Wii Party" and "Just Dance", moms who wanted to 'get fit' with "Wii Fit", and for those who wanted a really cheap Netflix/Hulu Plus player. That's most of the Wii's owners right there.

Wii U - while still sharing the casual multiplayer fun attributes of the Wii - is still being pushed towards the more "hardcore" ~ or "true gamer" ~ kind of players. This is N's first HD console, so it took a little while to get a feel for the new tech. Now they've seemed to get a grasp, at the fact they've been releasing a major title from since JUNE - and will continue to do so until the end of this year, and flowing into next year.

Wind Waker and Pikmin 3 both perked up sales. That shows that all the systems need is the big-name IPs. Wait until Mario, DK, Smash and MK8 land on the system; those perks will turn into waves.

Where Are The Wind Waker And Twilight Princess Switch Remasters At?

Nintendo is a weird company. It has the most illustrious legacy of any single company in the medium and seldom chooses to take advantage of that fact. Countless classics are confined to their original platforms or only available through outdated retail models or a cheeky bit of emulation.

I want a Twilight Princess HD for the Switch I would day one it right now.

GoodGuy09581d ago

This holiday would've been great and it would've calmed my hunger for tears of the kingdom. It supposedly exists but why has it taken this long I wonder. Here's hoping it still releases before totk, maybe a trailer at the game awards and a shadow drop.

Double_O_Revan581d ago

I wouldn't hope too hard. The Metroid Prime Trilogy or even just Prime 1 remaster supposedly exists and has been complete for several years now. Either Nintendo are evil bastards, or everyone claiming it's existence is full of shit. Frankly, I believe both scenarios to be true.

Immagaiden581d ago

Wii U was such a great to play every 3D Zelda game and various 2D ones as well

It'd be nice if Switch caught up to that wealth of legacy content

Inverno581d ago

Booted up WW HD through emulation on Deck. Forgot how much I like that game, it's so charming with how expressive Link is. Ninty has taken too long.

ZeekQuattro581d ago

Nintendo wants the focus on tears of the kingdom. Though with these year Zelda old rumors I question if the collection ever existed for the Switch. Much like the Prime Trilogy that evolved into a remake or remaster of just Prime 1 in recent months.

If they're not important enough to be held on their own official storefront then they're not important enough to give your money to Nintendo.

Buy these, physically, used or simply emulate them.

This article comes off as nothing more than advertising games that Nintendo, themselves, don't care to offer you... buy now!

ocelot07789d ago

Wait hang on where all the outrage? I swear when Sony tried to do this with PS3 last year. There was outrage from all corners of the gaming universe.

Why does no one care Nintendo is doing it?

MadLad789d ago (Edited 789d ago )

There has been.
A lot of it.

Simply type in "3DS" in Google and tell me what you see.

ocelot07788d ago

Oh I have a fair few websites reporting on it. But where is the outcry on here? I remember their was 2-3 approved top voted articles when Sony announced they where closing the PS3 store. All slating them and not caring about customers.

I should of worded it better. Where is all the outrage on n4g?

MadLad788d ago (Edited 788d ago )

N4G is a fanboy site, mainly frequented by only Sony.
Microsoft is their direct competition, so you'll typically only see articles that are made to rile up those fanbases.

Nintendo does it's own thing, so they're rarely brought up, aside from their fans. The most you get is the same typical two or three posters claiming Nintendo is only for infants.

If you come to N4G for educated discourse and reasonable discussion, this isn't the place. Sad as it is.

pietro1212788d ago

It's lame that it is shutting down. Now I feel rushed buying all the rpgs I missed out on the system.

XxINFERNUSxX788d ago

You guys know that even archive.org has 3DS roms, and all other console roms. I'm downloading 846GB of 3DS roms and will add the best games to my soon to be soft modded New 3DS 😁. Might as well throw in DS and other emulators in there to. Guys this would be the best way to play and enjoy the 3DS. Just need to buy a bigger micro SD card and format it to FAT32, which you can if it's even 256GB or larger there are ways.

XxINFERNUSxX788d ago

This should help if you want to soft mod it excellent guide and up to the latest and probably last 3DS firmware update: https://www.youtube.com/wat...
