‘SOMA’ looks like an extraterrestrial horror game, but will it exceed its predecessor?

So [we] just finished watching the four minute trailer for Frictional Games‘ newest announcement, known only as “SOMA.” While [we] have yet to play one of Frictional’s flagship Amnesia games, [we] have heard rumors that the level of it’s NOPE. moments is through the roof. This makes [us] wonder if “SOMA” can exceed, or at the very least meet, its predecessor’s level of quality.

"I think therefore I am" wooh!! Descartes in the building !! Haha for some reason I love that they put quote in there.
This looks like it could turn out to be pretty freaky I just need to see more from the game to really have an opinion about it. For now, the trailer definitely grasped my attention.

It's Frictional Games. If anybody can do it, it's them! As long as The Chinese Room (Amnesia: A Machine For Pigs developer) has no part in it, I am confident they can!

ifritAlkhemyst3840d ago

The Chinese Room needs to whore itself out as writers. That's all they're good at it.

Frictional is a pretty fantastic developer but this needs to be a greater leap than Amnesia was from Penumbra in the gameplay department, otherwise I sense their fanbase is going to turn on them quickly.

OhMyGandhi3840d ago

why would their fanbase turn on them?
You speak as if the market is over-saturated with true, honest-to-god survival horror games.

DigitalRaptor3840d ago (Edited 3840d ago )

The Chinese Room weren't really set up to make that kind of game.

Dear Esther was amazing, and that was the kind of original game they set out to make. Everybody's Gone to the Rapture shows that ambient, story-heavy adventure games are their calling, not jump scare horror games.

Really looking forward to SOMA, and I don't think TCR are any part of it.

MadLad3840d ago (Edited 3840d ago )

I liked A Machine For Pigs for what it was - I twisted story told within a rather disturbing setting. It was good at that.

That said . . . it certainly wasn't what the original tried to be.

OhMyGandhi3840d ago

This game looks damned good.

My_Name_BTW_Is_Dante3840d ago

No. But the Amnesia games aren't scary anyway.

Titan fall 2 was chefs kiss. For those of you who haven't played it go ahead. Brilliant. With each level being creatively different.

Island, Steins;Gate Elite and Soma.

MadLad320d ago

Soma is an epic experience.

jznrpg320d ago (Edited 320d ago )

Does ISLAND have English subs ? I can’t find a copy that says it has English subs for PS only the Switch version which I rather not buy .

Love Steins Gate and Soma

shinoff2183320d ago (Edited 320d ago )

FRom what i could find. Nothing with English subs.

Yui_Suzumiya318d ago

I own a physical copy on Switch and it does have English subtitles so it's all good on Switch and Playstation.

Yui_Suzumiya318d ago (Edited 318d ago )

My bad. Steam and Switch have English but PS4 and Vita only have Japanese. Sony doesn't mess with many visual novels which is why I only own a Switch OLED and laptop for all my games.

A lot of my favourites are on this list so I whole heartedly approve.
Everything except The Observer. It started out really interesting but quickly unraveled into a train wreck. Including frustratingly dull dives into mind sequences, They neutered the monster with boring on rail stealth sequences and a laughably obvious and cringeworthy ending. Mix in bugs and some wonky controls to boot.
I had really strong impressions with it to start but ended up absolutely hating it.

I got 2-3hrs in and couldn't take it anymore, the constant need to switch between the 3 visions just became so annoying and honestly just unnecessary.

monkey602529d ago

I actually agree. At first I thought it was a great idea because the game wasn't holding your hand with the Detective work but it was so unintuitive too. It became a sequence of staring at everything for long enough in 3 different vision modes just to see what stuck.

Yui_Suzumiya529d ago

Soma would be more existential horror than anything but I'll be damned if it didn't have one of the best stories in game that I've experienced. Blew my mind.
