EA DICE Aims to Achieve the Same Framerate and Resolution for Battlefield 4 on Xbox One and PS4

Earlier today a report from a Japanese website mentioned that the final retail version of Battlefield 4 would run at 720p, as confirmed by an EA rep.

Things suddenly took a turn for the better, as DICE now confirmed that they aim to achieve the same resolution and framerate on Xbox One and PS4

We have already seen an articel stating the xbone has a problem with 1080p 60fps so to run at 1080p they would have to lower frames so instead they bumped the resolution down. We will see this a lot for 3rd party games either 1080p or 60fps never both for big, nice looking games like this. EA have to make them look alike though I mean there on MS dime right now coming upto launch.

Resolution is one of many settings. I'd prefer they pick the settings that look the best rather than focusing on any one setting. Minecraft at 8K still isn't going to look that special. I wouldn't want a bunch of detail cut from The Last of Us for a higher resolution, either.

I think people tend to substantially overrate the importance of resolution specifically because the generations of consoles and TVs tend to be marketed that way. Detail, post processing effects, AA, ect. are also very important.

30 fps at 720p doesn't sound like impressive specs for this generation, but those are the specs for The Last of Us and many of the very best looking games from this generation.

Frame rate and resolution specs are not as useful as seeing the game actually run. I think many mistakenly think that because they have a few figures they know just how it will look, and this isn't necessarily true given all the other factors involved. Predicting that Killzone 3 or The Last of Us would look mediocre because of unimpressive resolution and frame rate specs would have been a big mistake.

The jump from 720p to 1080p is just too big in comparison to the difference in power between both consoles. I was only expecting an extra degree of AA, textures or less fps dips in the PS4 version.

We may see different approaches taken for awhile until developers get accustomed to the new hardware. We may see some less detailed games with a high frame rate (the CoD approach) or really high detail with a lower frame rate in other games.

Personally, I think 60 fps is important for racing and fighting games, particularly online, but I don't have a problem with sacrificing frame rate for high detail or having a huge open world environment in a single player adventure game. Developers should pick what best suits the experience rather than trying to make the game fit a certain arbitrary spec.

Here's the problem with that and a big thing consoles gamers don't realize. Regardless of 50% visually better, it's about what the game does. Devs use a lot of tricks to make games look better, which isn't bad. static environments, weather cycles, real time lighting, tesselation, HBAO, AA etc.

Those are things that could be happening in a game even though another game SEEMS to look as good from videos. Not to say that's the case, just an example.

Point is with that extra 50% the PS4 devs could be using no tricks and using all the high end techniques where the Forza devs are using a painted sky. Make sense? It doesn't make a huge difference in videos, but it does look nicer when being played and is noticeable. It's just the end all be all.

Is this the developers being told what to do by the publishers? We all know about the EA - Microsoft partnership so it is not really a surprise. Just a shame for Dice as I believe they want to create the best version for each platform.

There is only 1 way to stop this from going on. Do a petition like the NoDRM and cancel all pre-orders. The publishers get the message and order the developers to drop the parity and we all get the game we deserve.

Just a thought. If the games are not maxing out the PS4 as seems to be the feeling at the moment then will the game be cheaper on the PS4?

I've played BF4 at Eurogamer today and it looked and ran fantastic. There were 64 xb1s running it in 2x 32 player matches of obliteration and conquest.

Battlefield on xb1 is easily equal to mid/high pc settings and resolution looked a lot higher than 720p.

I'm sorry but those figures are not fact. Complete hardware and clocks information for both machines are not 100% known so that performance gap cannot be verified. That is not a lie and I don't appreciate being called a lier.

My views on the xb1s capabilities are based on having used both consoles myself yesterday at Eurogamer. None of the PS4 launch games showed any kind of evidence of the performance gap you claimed. On the contrary the performance of the XB1 titles was most impressive especially the xb1 versions of battlefield and CoD. Ryse was stunning and killer instinct never dropped a beat. FIFA 14 was the same on x1 and ps4 as to be expected.

This news isn't really news and it doesn't really say much of anything.

They are trying to achieve same framerate and resolution. Okay. Why shouldn't they TRY?

That doesn't mean they will achieve it. Nor does that mean they will gimp the PS4 version to keep it even. If anything it shows they won't gimp it since they are only 'trying' to make it equal frame rate and resolution wise.

Notice that textures and other graphical effects are not included in that estimate.

From what I've been reading I've been under the impression that both versions were going to be 60 FPS. Maybe PS4 is a more stable 60, or maybe both will be a consistent 60 FPS. Nothing in the statement changes this.

Nothing in the statement means PS4 won't be at a higher resolution if it can. 720p will be the minimum to expect and PS4 probably will do 900p. If it is, they will TRY to make the Xbox One version 900p. Doesn't mean they'll succeed.

So overall I really don't find any game changing information in the statements and nothing that suggests they will gimp one version.

BF4 SP sounds a lot better with this version. It is supposed to play more like the MP game.

But my point was that people comparing KZ with BF4 often compares SP KZ with MP BF4.

BF4 Frostbite 3 engine is MP first, and the difference to SP is not that big. But for some reason BF3 asked for a quick time event when killing the rat. It should just have been a normal knife kill... (one of the things I think have changed to BF4)

KZ on the other hand is SP first, you can see that on the very static environments in their MP. Nothing but players and their owls moves...

Back to my question "have anyone seen BF4 SP on PS4?" when looking at BF4 PC SP there is a chance that BF4 SP PS4 can beat KZ - my feeling is that it won't be a simple "No question about it KZ looks best"

The game is most likely going to be held back. The PS4 is signficantly stronger than the Xbox One. All tech-head on all the sites have already had the fight and reached a consensus. Only fans with no tech knowledge still challenge said conclusion.

But I think it has more to do with game genre than the game politics.

Multi-plat developers don't want to get have their games seen as practically an exclusive of one system. The shooter people would be especially afraid to have the Xbone version of their shooter look significantly better on the PS4. They'll be afraid because the are not yet sure whether the shooter fans will stay with the Xbone or move over to the PS4. If they make a game that comes to be seen as virtually a PS4 exclusive but the shooter fans stay at Xbox then said developer will loose money.

That fear will subside however, as the generation goes on and the PS4 outsells the Xbox One by 3 or 4 to 1.

None of this upgrading/gimped/downgrading/h eld-back stuff is going to outweigh the $100 that Ma and Pa are going to save when they buy Jimmy a PS4 instead of an Xbox One to play the same video games.

Think about it. Jimmy wants to play Battlefield, or COD, or NFS, or Madden, Final Fantasy, or GTA 6 or Resident Evil etc. He can do all of that with either a $500 Xbone or a $400 PS4.

If you think that the average customer is going to look at that choice and choose the $100 more expensive system 1 out of 3 times, you're delusional.

Money talks, BS walks. If Microsoft doesn't get that price down, the Xbone will be down to PS4 25 million to 5 million before you know it.

If that happens PS4 owners won't have to worry about whether or not the games are gimped. The Xbone won't have enough numbers to matter. Develpers will release whatever version of games naturally result from their work.

I think that after the first 2 or 3 million early adopters get their systems that the price difference is really going to start setting in.

Microsoft will ditch the Kinect in order to cut the price and save the X1 by Christmas 2014.

Not seeing the issue here. If you're gonna play the game, you're gonna do it regardless. PS4 and XB1 will always look relatively the same and both will lack compared to what can be done w/ PC.

PS4 version "disappoints"? blame the X1..I see a trend here on N4G.. But Im thinking you guys are over estimating the PS4. Its more powerful than the X1 for sure...but when all is said and and done...these are AMD jaguar APUs.. Im just going to say, you guys should lower your expectations a little bit. Seriously if you want guaranteed 1080P everything..get a PC.
