No Future In Android Consoles

"After the NVIDIA Shield and the Ouya I think it’s about time we called it quits on Android consoles being “the future” and even being in the future."

Its hard to get a console going when the users don't actually buy games.

"No Future In Android Consoles"
When you got a console that's outdated like the Ouya, who would even want that?

The fact remains that Android-based games are designed for touch screen first with a game pad as an after tough.

The Ouya is irrelevant, while the shield is quite an impressive piece of machinery.

If Google wants to make it in home consoles, they need to create a specific platform for it, like Steam OS.

Until then, people aren't really going to buy a console that plays the same game they have on their phones.

UltimateMaster3859d ago

I'd really would want to see what Google could do as a dedicated gaming console with it's own OS.

They would need a few things first:
-A few First Party Studios and exclusive games.
-A gaming console that matches Next-Gen tech.
-A well tough out, friendly interface.
-Third Party support from Major Publishers.

Get that, and then you're in business.

what's an Android Console?

/sarc

imagine the amount of dust Ouya is collecting while sitting on a store shelf. (although I have NOT seen one on a shelf anywhere)

Speaking of Dust....is ONLIVE DEAD yet?

Android console will never make sense (and money) as it's redundant!

VITA TV...now THAT'S how you make a portable console!

AceBlazer133859d ago

Were there any good games for these consoles?

zeal0us3859d ago

Nope just a bunch of hit and miss indie games and games you can get on the Play store like FF3 and Deadtrigger.

Will there be any good games for these consoles?

Hazmat133859d ago

ouya would be nice for like a party thing. i guess. but when PS4 and X1 come out it sells will be non existent

MadLad3859d ago

They were really hoping for a niche market to carry this. The reason that phone and tablet games are so popular is because they are on the go and they are a nice, cheap way of spending a couple of unoccupied minutes.
The biggest games on those devices are rarely played for more than bite sized chunks of time. Having a platform that asks you to dedicate more than that to them is kind of silly.
Getting developers to actually dedicate themselves to the system seems to be a real issue as well, as it should be. In the days of Steam, where just getting your game on the service markets it to millions every day for free . . .
The only future I ever saw for this was for those looking for a cheap, small emulator player for the living room or bedroom.

I had the LaserActive... it was a nice collectors piece but not very practical. Especially when it came to needing recapping. I think i paid all of about $50 for the floor model from an incredible Universe back in the day. I ended up selling it many years later for $300 at the time due to it needing a new laser and the aforementioned recapping.

An honorable mention not on the list would be the VM Labs Nuon. It basically looked like any regular DVD player but it had ports on it for controllers to play specific games. one of which is still exclusive to it with Tempest 3000. It also offered nuon enhanced DVD movies with extra content not accessible by regular players.

Wasn't there some KFC console, or am I mistaken?

It was announced but it never actually came out as far as I know

For sometime, I'd been contemplating getting a Shield to replce my Steam Link hw as the Shield is a more capable 4K/60 device for streaming. Happy they notified us before I finally decided to pull the trigger on getting one.

amazinglover487d ago

You can still stream using the shield just not natively, you'll have download and use the stream link app on the shield.

They likely are not supporting it natively to save money on developing and maintaining the feature and letting valves app do it instead.

I hope this doesn't end the Moonlight service functionality

... and yet no support for PS4

Cernunnos1182d ago

PS4 controller works just fine with mine.

Vits1182d ago

It's nice to have the support. But without the unique functions of the DualSense I wouldn't go for it unless you already have a PS5 laying around. As there are many other controllers compatible with the system that will also cost much less.

1nsomniac1182d ago

I don’t think anyone would be planing on buying the PS5 controller for the shield specifically. The idea is that if you have a ps5 with the controller and would prefer to use it on the shield instead of the supplied shield controller, then you can.

Vits1182d ago

Is more of general advice. For PC gaming is exactly the same thing, while the DS4 was a fairly popular option for having a good quality/price ratio the Dual Sense is better to be avoided as you are not going to get anything out of it's special features. But will be paying the premium anyway.

Also only older models and the Gaming Edition of the Shield have a supplied controller. For all the rest including the newer cylindrical and Pro editions you have to supply your own if you plan on doing any gaming at all on it.

1nsomniac1182d ago (Edited 1182d ago )

The cylindrical one doesn’t come with a controller. The rest do, there is no gaming edition. I have one.

Vits1182d ago

Yeah you either got a old model or got the Gaming package and didn't notice. The newest 2019 version of it does not come with a controller.

1nsomniac1182d ago

According to that your right the newest pro version doesn’t come with a controller, which seems ridiculous to remove a bundled item and still charge the same if not more for it.

I have the 2017 version.

Vits1182d ago (Edited 1182d ago )

To be fair. They did also change the SoC of the units.
Both 2019 versions use the X1+ that is a 25% performance bump over the normal X1 of the older versions. And it really makes a difference for some things like GC/Wii emulation.

But it is worth $60 (controller price)? It's very debatable.

Just ordered my Shield T.V (new tube looking one), coming tomorrow, it should pair nice with my pc. This is great news as I have both PS5 and Xbox controllers no need to buy another controller.
